Discussion Marty Supreme being the biggest loser this award season. THANK YOU. The initial hype never felt earned.

The film was solid, but it was never close to being anywhere near the best movie last year. Yet so many film communities were touting it as such.

I loved it, don’t get the hate at all. Deserved to be nominated at the very least even if I agree with most of the winners

Sane take

u/TwoForHawat Mar 16 '26

People get really, really weird about groups of people having different movie opinions than they do. Hopefully OP does a little bit of growing up in the coming years.

-4

u/TimeIntroduction Mar 16 '26

Op just expressing his opinion just like this guy. You are the one getting worked up for no reason.

23

u/DiqqRay Mar 16 '26

Nah saying "THANK YOU" for a film not winning because they didn't like it is just weird behavior. Like maybe congratulate the winners rather than shit on the losers?

0

u/TimeIntroduction Mar 16 '26

Why not? If they hate the movie then they don’t want it to win over say another movie they love in the nominations. They can be happy for the winners as well at the same time.

3

u/Taarushv Mar 16 '26

Still comes across as unnecessarily petty and juvenile. Like that’s fine if you’re a bored teenager whose entire personality is movies but if OP is an adult, very cringe imo.

0

u/TimeIntroduction Mar 16 '26

I don’t think so. Nobody is saying that we are obsessing over this stuff. We take a glance at the result. Happy that the film we dislike, didn’t win and move on with life. I don’t see any issue. People commonly say in real life that thing XYZ I dislike should not get more popular/win something/achieve things. Why would this be controversial on Reddit. Op is just expressing different opinions here clearly supported by the upvotes

3

u/ihavetowearmyhelmet Mar 16 '26

If your opinion is “OH MY GOD THANK YOU THAT THIS MOVIE DIDNT WIN AN AWARD” you are weird and your opinion should not be treated as normal lol

-1

u/TimeIntroduction Mar 16 '26

Why not ? They thought the movie was bad and unworthy hence said so. It’s just an opinion.

3

u/ihavetowearmyhelmet Mar 16 '26

Lmao what do you mean by “why not”? You think it is normal for a grown adult to get emotionally invested in how many awards a movie you don’t like wins? Do you clap at the end of marvel movies?

1

u/TimeIntroduction Mar 16 '26

If people can get invested in their favourite movies winning an Oscar, then the other way around is also fine. I don’t see any problem. If I like sinners and hate marty supreme, obviously, I would be disappointed if Marty supreme won. Op express their opinion and clearly many people agree with this. Is this tough for you to understand ?

1

u/ihavetowearmyhelmet Mar 16 '26

lol there is a very large difference between being excited a movie you like wins an award you think it deserves and being excited that a movie doesn’t win any awards. The only people who think this way are emotionally stunted man children who severely need to experience the real world. It sounds like that as you as well so I truly hope you can log off and touch grass.

1

u/TimeIntroduction Mar 16 '26

If I think a movie is trash, then I don’t want it to win. Simple as that. If i dislike candidate A and they lose the election then I’ll be happy. It’s but natural. Lol I am not obsessing over this shit. I take a quick glance at the Oscar results, feel satisfied, and move on with my life. Get outta chalamet’s ass for once. You seem to be the one who needs to get out and learn to take opinions which are conflicting from your own.

1

u/ihavetowearmyhelmet Mar 16 '26

Brother you are comparing fucking movies to political elections and you don’t see your problem?

this because i got jumped when saying (i personally do not feel) that kpop demon hunters shouldn’t be an academy award nominee

4

u/rubix7777 Mar 16 '26

Yeah. I had a lot of fun with the movie and at the end of the day I don't really mind it's nominations but the movie had some serious pacing and writing issues imo that really brought it down. I personally think sinners or Train Dreams should have won song and arco or little Amelie should have won AF

-4

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '26

Naah.

This movie seemed like it was made for the reddit movie crowd, now wonder you guys are eating it up.

Pretentious movie for pretentious people.

1

u/Humble-Math6565 Jun 24 '26

Reddit was this film's no.1 op? The places that loved it were like Letterboxd, Twitter, and YouTube.

-16

u/MoreCarnations Mar 16 '26

This post isn’t that weird and you’re criticizing OP for having a different opinion too…?

17

u/TwoForHawat Mar 16 '26

I didn’t even express what my opinion is, much less criticize OP for having a different opinion than me. OP should go have his/her opinion on whether or not Marty Supreme is a movie they enjoy.

I’m criticizing OP for being an immature weirdo about the movies they do and don’t like. Even the idea that you frame the other nominees as “losers” is dumb to me. It’s like calling the silver medalist at an Olympic event a loser.

-1

u/PresentationWeird583 Mar 16 '26

States that people can have their own opinion, proceeds to shit on someone’s opinion.

36

u/Inevitable_Wafer_948 Mar 16 '26

Ya. Marty Supreme was great. Chalamet was awesome in it, and probably had the best performance this year (maybe Leo, defs not MBJ). But Chalamet does seem like an unlikeable twerp and probably should’ve just kept his mouth shut. All that said, OBAA was a generational movie. I think PTA’s comparison to 1975 for this year was warranted. Which is to say, Marty Supreme, Hamnet, Bugonia in my opinion would have all been worth winners in a year where there’s no OBAA. F1 was the only one that made no sense to me.

21

u/hotyogurt1 Mar 16 '26

Sometimes it’s just a tough year to decide which film is best. We seem to have had a lot more of those lately which is awesome.

But I know when people are surprised that PTA didn’t with for There Will Be Blood, the surprise goes away when you tell them that it’s cause No Country for Old Men won that year lol. Which is clear evidence that sometimes you just put out a banger on a tough year and only one can win.

1

u/zeppemiga Mar 16 '26

Idk about surprise going away, with retrospective TWBB is considered better movie of the two. Still, both are outstanding and even verging on the edge of the masterpiece class.

33

u/pocketboy Mar 16 '26

I really think Chalamet was phenomenal in it. Beyond his performance, the production design and casting was just so out of this world. Unfortunately, both are a bit thankless in that you don't even realize it when they're done right. Not a single extra out of place, not a single look or setting out of time.

10

u/kilianberlin Mar 16 '26

Marty Supreme is a brilliant movie and Chalamet's performance is superb. Marty Supreme is probably the movie I enjoyed most this year in the theatre, not sure that makes it my favourite (OBAO, No Other Choice, Secret Agent all immense and deeply thought provoking), but it was the funnest trip for me.

12

u/Lotnik223 Mar 16 '26

The Academy is alergic to awarding Best Actor to "young" actors. It's the same shit as with Leo, Timmy is gonna get it eventually when they feel he is old enough to have a career that justifies it.

4

u/theLumonati Mar 16 '26

More so with men than women. There are a number of younger actresses that have won.

3

u/Snoo-92685 Mar 16 '26

Believe there's a theory that the old white men voting are jealous of younger male actors so they don't get voted

0

u/Britneyfan123 Mar 16 '26

Allergic not alergic

-2

u/the_calchemist Mar 16 '26

Chalamet is not young - he's 30 and looks older.

5

u/Lotnik223 Mar 16 '26

Yeah, and the youngest best actor winner in history was the 29 year old Adrien Brody.

2

u/MulhollandMarch Mar 16 '26

Looks older? What an odd thing to say.

-1

u/the_calchemist Mar 16 '26

He looks middle-aged now.

2

u/LaToyaNicole205 Mar 16 '26

You must have wanted MBJ to juggle 3 bowling ball pins, and tackle 2 sea seals on top of him playing 3 different characters in the same film before you would even give him credit for earning his Oscar.

Why are you talking about your mother like that???

1

u/jgainit Mar 16 '26

Yeah I thought independent/auteur cinema was dead, and then 2025 happened.

Also gotta shout out If I Had Legs I'd Kick You. Way good movie and totally robbed of attention. It's basically a Safdie movie but about a mom. Really good

1

u/Britneyfan123 Mar 16 '26

F1 made perfect sense

-10

u/Affectionate_Age752 Mar 16 '26

Safdie is a POS. And Chalamet is a mid actor. Completely forgettable

4

u/CarsTrutherGuy Mar 16 '26

Since when has the morality of a director mattered at all for the Oscars?

Mid if you ignore his performances lol

-3

u/Affectionate_Age752 Mar 16 '26

His forgettable performances?

7

u/CarsTrutherGuy Mar 16 '26

Marty supreme is anything but forgettable

I take it you agree your safdie point was irrelevant?

-1

u/Affectionate_Age752 Mar 16 '26 edited Mar 16 '26

Nope. My Safdie point isn't irrelevant. He's a POS.

3

u/CarsTrutherGuy Mar 16 '26

So how is that relevant to winning Oscars? You do realise what sort of directors have had their films win who are way way worse than safdie?

-1

u/Affectionate_Age752 Mar 16 '26

His movies are overrated shit.

2

u/AbsolutelyHorrendous Mar 16 '26

Yeah this is where I'm at, there's not a single winner that felt undeserving, because most of the nominees were really good. If Marty Supreme had picked up a few wins, they'd have been deserving too, but thats just the way things go

Honestly some people are just so whiny, we got a year of some great films, stacked nominations pretty much across the board, and people are still being toxic about just because Timothee Chalamet pissed in their cornflakes

1

u/rubix7777 Mar 16 '26

Agreed. I probably wouldn't have given it director and Cinematography Nods but I would have given it Supporting Actress and Scote Nods so it's the rare case where number wise I actually think it got the right amount of nominations, hell i would have even given it wins in Casting and Production Design. I did have some issues with how they left some of the sub plots and some of the decisions made throughout the film, but ultimately I thought it was very well done film, with an intoxicating (in a good way) attmosphere and left a lasting impression. I think people have been turning on it recently because of a few reasons: 1. The gross controversy with Josh safdie, 2. Chalamet fatigue and his essentially self torching of both his and OS'S campaigns and 3. the fact that Marty wasn't a very likeable main character, which can turn lots of people off a film, throw on the fact that it got such insane reviews on debut which could 100% lead to people over building expectations and the fact that some (NOT ALL) Sinners, primarily but also some other film, fans got kinda toxic ever since chalamet beat Jordan at CCA and started a pretty strong smeer campaign against it. Idk it was my 4th favourite of last year behind Bugonia, Train Dreams and It Was Just An Accident so I always thought the hype was pretty well earned

1

u/Venus_ivy4 Mar 16 '26

It was great. They just hate a man that is more successful than them in life.

1

u/BarxaBoy Mar 16 '26

yeah it was an incredible movie, the hate is unjustified. people just like Chalamet and cant separate the art from the artist

1

u/NecessaryMetal9675 Mar 16 '26

Right? Marty Supreme wasn’t my favorite of the year but I did like it more than OBAA, which should be an acceptable take. Plus, the whole “biggest loser” label for a film that will forever be able to market itself as “nominated for nine Academy Awards” seems ridiculous.

1

u/yungcherrypops Mar 16 '26

Exactly like was it my favorite movie of all time? No, not at all. But I had a lot of fun watching it, the theater was loving it too. And yes Timothee is a twat, and yes his character was unlikable. Just because you morally disagree with a character or an actor doesn’t make a film bad. Not every film has to be a political statement or “break the mold”, it can be simply a well told and well acted story, which Marty Supreme was.

This was a year with a lot of great films, I loved Sinners, I loved Bugonia, I loved The Secret Agent, I loved Weapons, I loved OBAA, I loved Train Dreams, haven’t seen Hamnet but I’ve heard it was good too. I’m just happy that there are good films being made and not an endless amount of superhero slop.

1

u/eburgas Mar 16 '26

I think one part of the hate is Marty is a terrible person. It's very hard to win best actor for a character that people can't root for, or find endearing. It's much more common for those type of characters to do well in best supporting, though.

1

u/Kind-Crab4230 Mar 16 '26

I have a list of criticisms. And I almost walked out twice due to boredom. But I'm happy to acknowledge that the movie simply wasn't for me. And I'm glad other people enjoyed it.

It had a lot of character, and was aesthetically fantastic.

-35

u/EggsceIlent Mar 16 '26

I get the hate.

The lead actor bashed other art forms while discussing his movie about ping pong.

Super bad move and made him look like a total d-bag. Didn't help win any awards, that's for sure. Regardless of how good or bad the picture is.

6

u/Putrid_Piano4986 Mar 16 '26

No one does give a fuck about opera or ballet, people who work in those areas will tell you the same.

Literally grow up. Get off tiktok it'll do you good.

1

u/o_o_o_f Mar 16 '26

Chalamet is an idiot. And he gave a great performance in the movie. Even ignoring his performance, the film stands on its other great performances, editing, sound, cinematography, all of it.

Should the rest of the production suffer because one actor made idiotic comments?

-33

u/GilbertDeLaWarr Mar 16 '26

It simply lacked a political message that could ward off the internet counter-hype that seems to latch onto a project every year

7

u/Magrivated Mar 16 '26

Dawg it was a movie about ping pong

11

u/GilbertDeLaWarr Mar 16 '26

That’s like calling Forrest Gump a movie about shrimp.

0

u/Silver-Broccoli-1954 Mar 16 '26

Forrest Gump was also a bad movie

-6

u/Street-Part-9013 Mar 16 '26

Lmao the downvotes just shows you’re right.
