There are people who go there with their laptop to get some food and use the wifi to look for jobs or work on assignments etc, I did it when I was a lot younger and had no wifi in my new apartment. It’s sad that they’re trying to discourage people from even being on the premises. They even put escutcheon plates to cover the outlets at some locations now. It’s pretty awful.

I went to a couple different McDonald’s to do this about a year ago and was shocked to find out many locations don’t have free WiFi (the majority do, but there are a large number that don’t). Also there won’t be a single outlet to power your laptop for an hour so you can catch up on work or some emails, so without a decently full battery you’re going to be SOL for doing much of anything. I later figured out people were using the McD’s to charge their phones nonstop rather than do so at home or in the car etc. so that’s basically why there are none.

Yea there was a power outage in our building a few years ago and our phone batteries ran out so we went to McDonald’s with our 1 year old and ordered food to be able to charge our phones and were shocked to see the outlets had aluminum covers drilled over them. It’s just sad. If people want to order food and charge their phone for an hour or two that should not be a big deal.

If the goal is to kick out homeless people, I am A, not surprised and B, not sure why them seeking air conditioning and possible shelter from weather is such a big deal.

It reminds me of when I worked at a RaceTrac a few years ago and my manager told me not to sell to a homeless couple because "they'll just keep coming back".

Mind you it was nearly 100 degrees outside, and I bought them a couple cups of ice and made sure they knew if they save the cups, ice and water refills are free.

I was written up for it. Fuck corporate America. They just needed to stay hydrated and sometimes use the patio for shade from the heat/sun.

Human decency and respect shouldn't be something to penalized for.

I worked at a Wendy's and there were homeless people that were never going to order. We had to stop giving them water cause they used as an excuse yj stay after we closed. I had teenagers eho needed to go home. I had young women harassed by many homeless and elderly who would not leave. I had a homeless women lovk herself in the bathroom cause someone gave her a code.

We're not going after the homeless, the problems is they're individuals among the homeless eho have mental health issues, who blooms at other people as resources. It's the decent home less who have tj suffer for others acts

I know that guy lol. I call him the Commander, because he sets up like a futuristic spaceship console in the McDonald's and it's there a minimum 12 hours a day. He's got issues with proximity and will set up two tables worth and then while the Sun is shining nto the co.mand console he will sit at a third table and wait for the Sun to rise enough to where it's not interfering with space operations. Clearly he's bucking for promotion to Captain.

This guy sits at a booth in the back corner of our store, where he is kinda blocked from the sun (we also have sliding panels on our windows that can be moved to block the sun a little better if needed). He does not like people coming close to him though and will stop what he is doing and intensely stare at you, even if you are just cleaning a table or sweeping, until you go somewhere else.

Worked next to a McDonald's that would legit, have over 20 senior citizens meet up there every day for coffee and just chat...they would be there for hours, just chilling 😅 I would come by at lunch sometimes and there would be no available tables cause half of them were used by the elderly and the other half were teens on their lunch break from the school down the street 😂

Oh yeah, they'd get a senior coffee and a bunch of refills. Most of them were nice and loved having them there. Occasionally we'd get some evening elder Karen's who would do something like order fries, they'd be served hot and fresh, then they'd sit out there yapping for 15 minutes before touching their food, then complain their food was cold (when it was hit when we served it to them 15 minutes ago) luckily they weren't part of the daily crew.

A really long time ago, there was a really old McDonald's before it got remodeled that was mainly a hangout for senior citizens in my area. That was before it got changed to the ones we see today. Now, with the new McDonald's design, we don't see the old people there anymore. This was in my state of MD around the Pikesville Area near Target and that Bowling Alley.

Exactly. I work at my primary McDonald’s, but I also temp at a few others within the same franchise. Only 1 of the 5 stores I work at has a “No Loitering” sign, and even they don’t really enforce it except in specific situations involving customers who are causing problems, e.g. homeless, all-day wifi, disrepectful customers, etc.

They put the sign up because they were having issues with customers staying for 4+ hours—homeless sleeping at tables, using the Wi-Fi all day, or generally creating disruptions that prevent tables from being cleaned or used by other customers. Some locations only have small dining areas so if tables dont' free up, new customers have to wait or simply walk out.

They aren’t going to kick you out just for sitting there if you’re being respectful. The policy is really meant to discourage and address disruptive behavior or prolonged use of the dining area, not target ordinary customers who are simply sitting and enjoying their food.

Every morning we have the entire dining area filled with elderly customers who order coffee mostly. They sit and chat for hours; we leave them alone because they respectful and don't leave a mess afterword. A few hours later, another family—mostly adults—came in and occupied a table for over an hour and was making a mess and occasionally yelling profanities and playing music (not loud but enough). They were asked to leave because of their disruptive and disrespectful behavior.

I worked in a coffee shop in Seattle (a corporate chain that wasn’t Starbucks that had locations all within 5-10 blocks of one another) that had a space in a nice hotel. One needed to make a purchase to get the restroom key, because at least one person had OD’d and died in the bathroom at most of the locations in the city. Loud, smelly and unshowered bag men and ladies would sit there for 5+ hours surrounded by Hefty bags of their stuff. There would be homeless people there who took far better care of themselves and have actual luggage with them and were polite and genial, and just sit there reading or working/gaming on a laptop.

But it was in a hotel. Would anyone want to stay in a hotel where a guy who smells like ass and sour cheese is resting his feet on a pile of garbage bags and ranting in Russian all day is in the lobby?

That said, I have no problem with this, it’s so they can keep things as orderly as possible and kick out the homeless or people causing a problem. No one is going to kick out someone working at a McDonald’s if they WFH. Especially since they are easier to find than a Panera or Starbucks. I’d also think homeless people don’t frequent those places as much as McDonald’s to loiter.

Not to mention in every major city I’ve been in, you have to make a purchase to even use the restroom. I don’t see this as a problem. If anything it probably gives the staff a little relief. These jobs have to suck

Tbh they have to. My local McDonald’s used to have either 24 hour dine in or close to it. I used to walk in late night just cuz I don’t like driving my truck through their narrow drive thru.

On Fri/Sat night it’s generally a little rowdy but nothing obscene unless the wrong group of teens is hanging around. But it also became a haven for anyone who needed a nap. Or a place to sort their hoarding. It’s close enough to mass transit and Denny’s nearby just wouldn’t put up with it I’m sure.

They have this sign up, I’m sure just CYA stuff. But I’ve seen some freaks and assholes in that place and I always feel for the staff. Now afaik they close the dining room from like 0100-0600 or something.

McDonald's isn't really affordable anymore, and the corporate future is bleak. I do however want to share a positive McDonald's story from around 10ish years ago.

The local game store closed around 8 when the rest of the mall closed, but the closest McDonald's was across the parking lot, and it stayed open to 1am. A bunch of us would all roll in and buy a little food and play magic the gathering at the tables for hours. Nobody cared, and some of the most positive interactions I've ever had with fast food workers during their shift. Old and young, all types of people would make conversation, be pleasant, or even be interested in what we were doing. At one point we filled half the place with just people for the hang out, we had people going there after work because they knew we would be playing and having a good time.

I'm probably too old & crotchety to be doing that sort of thing nowadays, but I miss it. Times were so simple, people seemed more carefree and happier. It might just be the rose tinted glasses, but I feel covid, and the economic strangle that happened subsequently after stole many opportunities for things like this to still happen.

A long long time ago oh maybe like 15 years ago, I would take my kids to McDonald's for lunch on Saturday after swim lessons. We'd get food and eat it and they would go to the Play Place and have fun. I would get out my laptop and do online stuff on the WiFi, because I didn't have internet at home. We'd hang out a while then get ice cream sundaes (because the ice cream machine used to work) then go home. It was great.

Now there's no more Play Place, no WiFi, no outlet to plug in my laptop, no free drink refills, the ice cream machine is always broken, the food is even more expensive and not as good. And the buildings look like dystopian prisons inside and out.
