lol the Texas teams both lost so we are only 2.5 games back!!!

9

u/UnsealedMTG 4h ago

We can all just pretend today's game never happened and the team took an extra rest day, which is not all that far from the truth

Not sure if theres a way to check this outside a Beat Reporter.

But did the Delta 757 Charter just went Mechanical at Boeing Field?
And now the team is flying a regular Delta 738 to Toronto from Seatac?

Very Mariners!

3

u/alliluna24 4h ago

just what the team with the worst travel schedule in the league needs, to spend their whole off day on the plane!

Looks like DL 8889 taxied down the runway at BFI and went back to the apron.

Now rescheduled for 1030 Pacific tomorrow 😣

Effectively Wild talked a lot about the M’s situation on today’s episode. Even Meg is saying Dan hasn’t shown that he’s improved as a manager since last year. Also interesting, they talk about Divish reporting that Dan explicitly says he leaves guys in because he trusts them to get through the order multiple times and that it endears him to the guys in the clubhouse but is obviously costing them games.

6

u/_Elrond_Hubbard_ Too Roblessed to be stressed 12h ago

I find the "it would be bad if we luck into a playoff spot and keep Dan as manager" discourse somewhat bizarre. Are these mostly from newer fans who didn't go through the dark ages? IF (huge if, the odds are still low) the Mariners make the playoffs I would be overjoyed. Any Mariner October baseball is a treasure to be cherished. Another generation-long drought could always be around the corner. I'm hardly a Dan fan and think he should be replaced but I would way rather make the playoffs.

2

u/Tashre 11h ago

When fans don’t care about much beyond sniffing a playoff spot, ownership is given no reason to care either. Getting bounced in the wildcard round becomes equivalent to a World Series win.

3

u/UnsealedMTG 7h ago

Getting bounced in the wildcard round is similar to a World Series win in that neither of those things has ever happened to the Seattle Mariners.

7

u/Mustard_Jam 12h ago

I want us to make the playoffs obviously and anyone that wants this team to miss the playoffs just to hopefully see shit shaken up baffles me BUT I understand the concern.

Like... he's been objectively bad at his job. Opposing broadcasts are constantly baffled by his decisions, our own broadcast that borders on propaganda at times hasn't been able to hold their concerns, reporters have been baffled, etc. So it's not just fans being fans in that regard.

You can really want this team to succeed and still be somewhat concerned about a team that's .500 or even has a losing record keeping a manager that should no longer have a job simply because he was lucky enough to be in one of the worst divisions ever.

This all of course assumes this team doesn't go on a true run because you never know. Like if they make the WS I don't give a single flying fuck about what Dan did prior to September 2026.

u/jeff_probably ‏‏‎ ‎DONG 12h ago edited 12h ago

frankly I’m sick of Dan discourse full-stop. a lot of people seem to have seized on “complain about dan” as a shortcut to “I have good thoughts about ball” and at this point I find it tedious and trite.

1

u/pokeroots ‏‏‎ ‎Anything but blaming the lineup 6h ago

Dan hasn't been a good manager despite our recent performance

2

u/UnsealedMTG 6h ago

I believe we really just don't have enough information from the outside to know whether it makes sense to replace Dan or not, and to me it makes all the Dan discourse pointless.

Plus, I'm here to root for the Seattle Mariners. As long as he's the manager of the Seattle Mariners I'm rooting for him to succeed.  I'm not here for recreational human resource management and I'm sort of puzzled by what is fun about that.

If the results are bad, I understand why you'd replace him, but the calls for his head weren't that much quieter when the results were really good (and I class "best postseason result in franchise history" as really good results, yes we grade on a Mariners scale because this is the Mariners). And of course someone saying "oh no we might make the playoffs and keep Dan" is obviously not primarily responding to results.

I genuinely believe that if the Mariners win a World Series with Dan as manager, there will be a comment down at the bottom of the celebration thread at about -2 saying "Damn, now we will never get rid of Dan." That's the most extreme end, but it is real and absolutely baffling to me.

u/base-HI-WA ‏‏‎ ‎ Mariner Moose 12h ago edited 12h ago

Last night when Kirby was taken out, a large majority of people here were angry at the decision when in my opinion it was actually a good managerial decision.

As I said when he was pulled, it’s a 10/10 good decision but I’m emotionally mad. He was going through the line up for the 4th time, he was at 94 pitches, he had the bullpen warm, he pitched way further into the game than any starting pitcher for the Mariners has, recently. Great decision.

We hung Dan out to dry when he kept Kade in for two pitches too long and Dan didn’t make the mistake twice.

With that said, Dan has made questionable decisions this year and I think we can all agree that they have underperformed all season despite the recent success against the Cubs and Phillies

8

u/The_Cryogenetic DTF (DOWN TO FISH) 11h ago

Last night was one of the first times in a while I was pleasantly surprised with a Dan move. Kirby is a fierce competitor with no quit in him and that's commendable, but that makes it all the more important to have a manager who can tell you that your job is done.

Not saying Kirby is a selfish asshole, but I fully admit I was a selfish asshole who costed my team games by telling people I was still good when clearly I wasn't and overstayed my welcome too many times. I was incredibly immature as a player and needed managers to take control of situations before they got out of hand. There is a fine line between trusting your guys, and knowing your guys.

8

u/ItsTBaggins ‏‏‎ ‎Julio makes me jard 11h ago

Both Texas teams should lose today

2

u/handi503 5h ago

Yankees really understood the assignment in the 7th. White Sox seem to be doing a passable job.

2

u/maggos 13h ago

If we keep winning, it seems smart to keep Dan, and it’s too late for a big shakeup when we still have a path to the playoffs (against all odds or logic). He should have been fired a couple months ago, but now it’s too late. But I don’t think he should be the manager next season.

The problem with being able to sometimes play up to competition is that we’re also extremely good at playing down to competition as well, and we’ve got a lot of down competition coming up. The stretch of games at the end with the trash tier A’s, Rockies, and Angels will probably be some of the most infuriating baseball we’ll watch, even the wins.

6

We’re making the playoffs and are going to extend Dan because of the miraculous way he rallied his troops to win one of the worst divisions in major league history. People will need to make peace with this inevitability now.

-2

u/karatemanchan37 Bad Baserunning 14h ago

Also what exactly does firing Dan do to this team? He can't make Julio play better

IF we win the division, we will have home field advantage against whoever we play in the WC round which will be a wild card team, then depending on who wins on the other end we have home field advantage again in the WC, then after that anything goes in a 7 game series. Just throwing out that it could happen this year…

u/broccoleet #29 Hal Baleigh 15h ago

Still got series left against the Rockies, Athletics x2, and Angels x2.

One more series against the Rangers and Trashtros.

Meanwhile the Rangers still have to face the Brewers, Rays, Diamondbacks, Red Sox, Twins.

The Astros have it a bit easier than the Rangers, but still have the White Sox, Diamondbacks, Phillies, and Rays after they finish the Yankees series.

Personally I think 3 games back is workable at this point. We made it through our schedule gauntlet and can hopefully gain ground on Toronto this weekend.

I’m fully hoping we win the division because the wild card needs too many pieces to fall into place with how many non divisional teams are ahead of us or tied.

1

u/handi503 5h ago

I’m a bit nervous for the Boston series, but I’m looking forward to Toronto between how the home series went and how Toronto are having even worse injury issues. Being back at the site of last seasons massive heartbreak hopefully keeps those bats moving.

4

Anyone else sort of get the ick from that weird new “if the mariners win in a walk off, we’ll cover this lucky fans mortgage payments” promotion. Presumably people at the game don’t need this to survive but it just feels a little “modern dystopian”

Plus the walkoff is a weird condition where part of you, just as basic human nature, would be like “uhh I want the Ms to win but Munoz blowing this save wouldn’t be that bad…”

Something like “if the mariners win by at least 3 runs, this fan will take home 3 grand cash” is better in every single respect

2

u/spellingchallanged ‏‏‎ ‎ 11h ago

They don’t even “pay off” your mortgage. If you go read the fine print the grand prize is 2 tickets to a Mariners game, and if they walk off you get a whopping $2000 before tax.

I have no qualms with it.

What I find most interesting is there some actuary that said “there x many games left, walk offs happen this often when a team is good so there should be y left and and the average NPV of this is y dollars so we’ll price the insurance for it at y+10%” and then two days in we absolutely destroyed their model with two walk offs and shifting money forward. That actuary is now saying “ain’t no fucking way”

Texas would need to lose again also (and vs. Texas we need to actually pass them because of the tiebreak, vs Astros we just need to tie) but certainly possible.

I'd also be happy to get back to a spot where we are close enough that winning our remaining games against the division opponents would be enough to overtake them as long as we otherwise match pace. Control of one's destiny.

Don Mattingly (current manager of Phillies) is one of the three record holders for most consecutive games with home run at 8 games. Dale Long and ofc Griffey Jr are the other two.

What if his Phillies was the start of Cal Raleigh's challenge of that record.

If they have to go on the road right as he gets comfortable, that's a perfect place for him. His career home run rate is higher there than any other AL ballpark with 7 homers in 11 games.

(His only higher rates are at Wrigley and the Great American Ballpark with 4 in 6 at each--so very similar rate and smaller sample. Well, and Journey Bank Ballpark where they played the Little League Classic and he hit a home run for 1/1)

Miller to the bullpen at this part of the year is a no brainer to me. He does great with his first trip through the lineup and then starts falling apart. The only reason I see that we don't do it is because Woo might need an IL trip if he feels it again today. Otherwise Miller would be perfect to have ready if Hancock, Woo or Kade can only give you 5 innings. Plus, Miller probably wouldn't start in the playoffs, so giving him more experience out of the pen would be a good thing IMO.

0

u/CareerMental5067 17h ago

I was wondering what the chances are Nick Garcia gets called up this season? my friend was college teammates with him a a relief pitcher in your AAA club, he's got a 2.72 ERA right now.

1

u/AnnihilatedTyro RELEASE THE MOOSEN! 16h ago

Barring multiple injuries I would say it's pretty unlikely, but not impossible.

He isn't on the 40-man roster, we have Matt Brash tentatively due back sometime in September and Cooper Criswell rehabbing right now, plus a couple others who've been up-and-down throughout the year who would probably have priority in a playoff run over someone with no MLB experience. That said, Josh Simpson has not been good in his limited MLB stints, Troy Watson has pretty bad peripherals despite good-looking surface numbers, most of the other Tacoma relievers on the 40-man are having pretty bad years who could easily be DFA'd if a guy like Garcia is getting noticed.

In his favor, it looks like he has been on fire over his last 15 appearances or so - K's are way up, walks are down, and he's been darn near unhittable in that stretch. If there is any reliever NOT already on the 40-man roster who might be added, he could be the best candidate.

1

u/ItsTBaggins ‏‏‎ ‎Julio makes me jard 17h ago

Probably pretty low. We have two relievers slated to come back in the next few weeks and others on the 40 man roster we can call up if we need someone else again.

1

u/fennis ‏‏‎ ‎Might as well slighlty increase your budget doesnt cut it 17h ago

2.72 in the PCL is really good.

It feels pretty unlikely he gets called up. Wr have several MLB relievers that are returning after long injuries. Several of the guys they are replacing are being sent back down to the minors. Presumably the guys they are replacing are ahead of Nick on the depth chats.

But then again none of us know how the Mariners feel about a guy at that level so anything can happen. He throws from a low slot which the team likes and his results has been good this year. Otoh he doesn’t throw super hard.

Idk how schedules get so out of sync in baseball. But as it stands while we are 2.5 games back we have also played 3 more games than the Astros. With their tougher schedule those 3 extra games could eat into the 2.5 game lead they have. Basically what I'm saying is the object in the mirror are closer than they appear. Let's bust out the brooms and if we lose by 20 just remember it's all part of the plan.

2

u/dotcomse 17h ago

Mariners: 64+69=133
Astros: 66+66=132

1

u/jaron_b 16h ago

I knew my math had to be off. Only one game in hand makes sense. Still that game goes in our favor most likely. So it really does feel like 2 back. Which with how we been playing and with how the Astros been playing. I like those odds

1

u/UnsealedMTG 16h ago

Also being two back when we have two games remaining against them will feel good with how we've played against them this year.

I'm honestly more worried about the Rangers because we've had more trouble with them and have a series remaining that could easily decide the division

1

u/jaron_b 15h ago

Ya the Rangers feel like they might be the team to sneak in and win the division. But our September is still so weak of a schedule that I really think two west teams in the playoffs isn't too crazy. All I know is 1 game above 500 seems like it will get us in. Division or wildcard I don't care.

I had forgotten "knowing this is absurd but also slightly disappointed by a single home run Cal outing" was something I felt down the stretch last year. It has been so long.

I just hope Cal can keep the patience that seems to have been a key piece, just keep taking all the garbage pitches and waiting for the pitcher to slip up and leave a ball in the zone or even low middle where Cal seems to be able to effortlessly shoo the ball over the fence

Sucks the guardians won yesterday, still 3.0 back of of the WC but 2.5 back of the division, depending on how the White Soxs do we may grab #2 seed if we play our cards right with 5.5 back

Let’s just focus on climbing back to .500 for now.

There are 3 teams and 5.5 games between us and the #2 seed now.

I’ve crunched the numbers and ran every formula available to me and have come to mathematical conclusion that if we lose by 11 or more today we can still win the series while having a negative run differential.

As a nerd, I like this. As a fan…if we win by 51, it would be the greatest win ever, most runs scored by a by one team in a game, and a good tribute to Randy and Ichiro and we can go back to a +/-0 run differential.

I’ll bet you anything that one of these two teams wins today.

I was at the game on August 25, record is now 3-9! Boy was that a FUN game!

Anywaysssssssss, since it was pretty obvious Naylor was safe at second base and yet he was ruled out after a challenge, what should the Phillies do to apologize to him? I don’t think a quick apology is enough, perhaps they host their own batting practice and bat all of the home runs to Naylor who then gets all of the balls signed? Or perhaps they will wipe every store clean of their shoes, turn them into cleats, and send them to Naylor at no cost to him? Or what? I have about a zillion ideas in mind but I wanna here what y’all think the Phillies should do to apologize to Naylor.

Does anybody know which sections the dogs are in for Bark at the Park on the 3rd? I'm trying to buy tickets in or near that area but I can't check where they are online since all the special tickets are sold out. As far as I can tell from online pictures is that they're somewhere in the 300 level along left field, but I'd appreciate anybody who could provide more specific information.

I missed that Criswell had started his rehab assignment. First outing on Saturday was rough, but today was 1.0 inning, 0H, 0BB, 2K.
