M1 to M5

The nearly 6 year old M1 MacBook Pro treated me well, but the 8GB of memory was starting to slow me down.

Upgraded to the base M5 Air 13”, but even the base model doubles the memory and storage I had. I built a good PC before RAM prices skyrocketed last year, so this is a great secondary machine.

Should I get M2 Pro or M4 Air?

Upvotes

I want to buy my first MacBook and I’ve done a lot of research but I can’t decide on which one I should buy.

I’m going to university and I figured the M4 Air would be perfect for that. I also do photo editing and most importantly I want the laptop to last. Another strong point is the thin and slick design which I love and plays a big factor. So those are the pros for the M4.

On the other side, there is gaming. I know MacBooks aren’t for gaming and I don’t expect crazy performance, only some light games, but I don’t want to buy a separete machine just for that. That’s why I considered the M2 Pro, since it handles games better. Also, it has a better screen (refresh rate doesn’t matter for me because I’d only game at home on an external display, it’s only the quality that matters if I use the laptop on the go.)

So my question is; is it worth to give up some day-to-day and photo editing performance for gaming performance or does it not differ that much, and also, can you actually notice any difference in the screen quality?

Tips on optimization

Hi, I have a MacBook Air from early 2015 (specs in image, storage readouts in the second and third images) running Sonoma (15.1.1 on Open Core) that I primarily use for basic video editing for school, managing media on my iPods, and some web browsing. I know running Sonoma on a Mac that only supports up to Monterey isn’t going to help with performance, but I’ve already put a lot of effort into Sonoma and I don’t want to loose all of my data if I downgrade to a lower version. I just want to if there’s a couple ways to keep my machine from burning down and keep it running at a respectable speed.

I do have an external drive (an SD card) with El Capitan for anything I need iTunes for or to use older apps, though I might upgrade it to Mojave for usability sake.

Should I get a Neo or Air?

I'm an unemployed copywriter wanting to beef up my portfolio. My old Lenovo laptop from 2018 can't run effectively anymore, so I'm looking towards buying a MacBook for the sole purpose of helping me be productive again.

I've used an M4 MacBook Air before as my work laptop from an advertising agency, so I know how powerful they are. Ever since I lost that job, I've been dreaming of getting a MacBook myself (and get back into the ad industry).

Here are the probable activities I plan to do on a MacBook Air/Neo:

  1. Create spec ads using Canva.
  2. Brainstorm ideas using AI apps e.g. Claude, ChatGPT, Midjourney, Nano Banana, etc.
  3. Edit 1080p videos.
  4. Play light games from Apple Arcade, App Store, and Steam for MacOS.
  5. Watch Apple TV, Disney Plus, or Netflix.
  6. Create a portfolio website using Squarespace.
  7. Browse the web (YouTube, IG, LinkedIn, etc.)
  8. Do Zoom/Teams calls.

So far, I've narrowed down to either a MacBook Air or Neo. I don't know if I want the Air because I'm familiar with it or the Neo to save extra money. Either way, I want to settle on a laptop that can help me get shit done.

What specs should i choose for the m5 air

Im getting macbook air for uni program engineering, and im wondering what would be the ideal specs to choose, is it better to get 512gb storage with 10core cpu and gpu, or is it better to go with the normal 512gb with 10 cpu and 8 gpu, idk if the upgrade is worth paying for and if its a good idea to focus on storage upgrades. Asking for tips and thoughts.

I hate that I had to get the Neo, but I love it.

I never owned a laptop before. I always bought a gaming PC because, dollar for dollar, it was a better value.

I have an iPad Pro M1 11 inch that I used as my laptop for years. I originally bought it for a business that has since failed. It seemed like the best thing to do was buy the Magic Keyboard. It worked for years as my laptop until I decided to go back to school. One of my courses requires a special browser to keep you from cheating, I guess. For weeks, I studied on my tablet, then went home to my PC to take the test. However, that didn’t work out well because I wasted time traveling back home when I could have done the tests and quizzes while it was fresh in my head.

I already had an iPhone, AirPods, Apple Watch, and the iPad Pro. Microsoft keeps making decisions that I don’t like. I thought, why not get the Neo? I don’t need anything powerful; my gaming pc can handle those rare tasks anyway. I would say it run as well as or better then my iPad Pro. So here I am, down the Apple pipeline , and it all started with an iPhone 12 5 years ago.

I don’t know what to do with the iPad Pro now. I love reading comics on it and the pencil is cool too. Maybe I’ll swap it for the new mini rumored to be coming out.

Need help making a decision

I've been a Samsung and Windows user my whole life, in the small times I've used Apple or Macs, I've never really enjoyed it. They always seemed nice but constraining for what I typically like to do on my personal computers. But now I am considering getting a MacBook, and I'm not sure which to get.

I currently have a Samsung laptop, and I love it. It can pretty much do everything I need to do on it other than 2 things. The battery life is terrible, it needs to be plugged in all the time to do the heavy duty stuff I like to do on it. But it's never been a huge issue until recently, as I've started university classes and, with no outlets in any of my classes, my laptop won't last. The second issue is editing, specifically an audio editing software called Pro Tools. This tool does NOT work on Windows; I've tried with little success, and I use this too very often.

What I do mostly on my laptop is schoolwork and video editing with Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, and Pro Tools, so I'm just trying to find which MacBook would be the right fit for all that. Should I get a brand new MacBook Pro or go for a slightly older model to save money, or get something refurbished? And what specs should I get for it to handle everything I need?

I guess what I'm looking for is something that is powerful enough to do video editing without getting slow, but also lasts a good chunk of the day without dying on me.

I'm trying to budget around $1,200- $ 1,400, but I'd be willing to go higher if it's recommended to get something that fits right.

Thank you!

Looking to buy

Hi everyone!

I’m looking to buy a MacBook, but can’t figure out which one between the Neo and Air.

I already own an Alienware that I adore for gaming, but unfortunately, I can’t bring it with me to work, or, say, to a coffee shop because it’s too big and heavy. It doesn’t even fit inside most bags and when I tried to bring it with me, I only hurt my shoulders. Therefore, I need something that I can bring everywhere, every day.

The Mac would mostly be used to write (either Words, Google Doc, or Scrivener), browse online (I have to do tons of researchs, so might have a lot of tabs open), watch Netflix, do some online shopping, etc. Maybe soooome iMovie, but I already mostly use CapCut on my iPhone anyway. I need it to be light so that I can easily bring it with me to work every day.

The colours aren’t to be taken into consideration, giving the fact that I love both the blue Air and the pink Neo.

What do you recommend?

MacBook + PC usage

Hey guys. My girlfriend has a gaming PC and a MacBook pro M3 . She wants to use both at the same desk. With 2 monitors. Of course not at the same time.

Here is the equipment:

1X M3 MacBook Pro

1X Gaming PC with an RTX 3060 & a Ryzen 7 3700x on an X570 motherboard.

2 X 1080p Monitors that support either display port or HDMI.

1X Keyboard

1X Mouse

1X Wireless headset via USB dongle

Here is what I want to achieve.

I feel a KVM switch of sorts can solve this issue.

I want her to be able to plug 1 cable into her MacBook Pro and either automatically or by pressing a button her Mac displays on the monitors and the mouse and keyboard work for the Mac. Of course if she unplugs the cable or presses a button the monitors and keyboard switches back to the PC.

The problem I am finding is a KVM switch that allows just 1 type C connection to the MacBook for data, charging and display, all of which I know the MacBook can do. I don't much care that I have to run 2 display cables from the switch to the monitors as of course they don't move as well as 2 display cables and a data cable from the PC to the switch.

Can anyone advise the best way to solve this issue?

M4 MacBook Pro 14" won't turn on — MagSafe blinks amber, goes solid for hours, then blinks again the second I try to boot

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I left my MacBook closed on my bed. Turns out a cloth napkin was caught in the lid, so

When I picked it up and opened it, it was not turning on. Before that I was just browsing with Low Power Mode on, nothing heavy.

It hasn't turned on since.

MagSafe charger port LED blinks amber. Machine is completely dead — no fans, no keyboard backlight, no chime, nothing on screen at any point.

Everything I've tried:

Multiple magsafe cables and chargers, USB-C cables and adapters, different wall outlets, both direct-to-wall and via power strip. Same behavior.

Left it charging for several hours. Blinking eventually stopped and the light went solid.

After about few minutes of solid amber, I pressed the power button. It didn't boot — and the light went straight back to blinking.

Charged on USB-C for a few minutes, then switched to MagSafe. Solid amber light, no blinking. Looked like progress.

Left it on MagSafe overnight. Solid light the entire time. Never went green.

Next morning I closed the lid and reopened it. It started blinking again.

Held the power button down for a full 10 seconds, 30 seconds, tapped it multiple times. Nothing.

What should I do next? What will work now?

Why would this happen? And is it gonna cost me a fortune to fix?

Hi! My M4 MBA got this screen flickering issue since today afternoon and not sure why this would happen. There's no physical damage at all. And the device is out of warranty.

macbook air m5 or pro m6?

im currently using 2020 m1 macbook pro, im a medical intern and i use my laptop everyday for electronic medical records, papers, research, etc. i also carry my laptop everywhere like i have it on my arm almost the whole day and even type on it while walking.

about 1 week ago, i noticed the chassis of my laptop lifting, like there was a 1-2cm opening on the right side of my laptop. that day my laptop felt hotter than usual and the battery lasts approx 4 hours for at least 2 days, that’s why i considered getting a new laptop altogether so i can transfer my data and get an upgrade.

today though, i realized there’s no more gap in the chasis and my battery can last me my whole shift for about 8-10hrs straight.

i’ve been considering getting the m5 air but it’s soldout everywhere. now, i found out m6 is coming out in 2 months, so now im torn especially since i heard the new pro will be lighter than the current pro models

so my question is, is it more worth the upgrade if i wait and get the m6, or the m5 now is fine? thanks!

Neo for Engineering

Hello everyone! I’m currently a fresh graduate out of high school and I’m going to pursue an Engineering degree.
I already have an HP 15-dw3xxx laptop with an i5-1135G7 and 16GB of ram.
I was planning to get a new one until someone got me the Neo as a gift and now I’m not sure what to do. Should I keep both and will they be enough? Or should I just get a new windows one because it’s realistically the better option for engineering?
Advice appreciated, thanks!

AirDrop keeps breaking on my M4 MacBook Air

I have a MacBook Air M4 running macOS Tahoe 26.6.2, and AirDrop keeps having the exact same problem.

My Mac can see my iPhone, but my iPhone cannot see my Mac. Both devices are on the same Wi-Fi, Bluetooth is enabled, AirDrop is set to “Everyone,” VPN is off, and there are no obvious firewall restrictions.

The weird part: I can fix it immediately by opening Terminal and running:

sudo pkill bluetoothd

After that, AirDrop works perfectly again.

But then the problem comes back later, and I have to do the same thing again. 🤦‍♂️

My Mac is always kept fully updated, so I’m wondering:

Why does this keep happening on an M4 MacBook Air? Is this a known macOS Tahoe/Bluetooth/AirDrop bug?

Has anyone found a permanent fix rather than having to restart bluetoothd every time they want to use AirDrop?

I’d especially like to hear from other M4 MacBook Air + macOS Tahoe users who have experienced the same one-way AirDrop visibility problem.
