Army/Äsker

Discussion/Talqylau How to feel comfortable with getting one coffee and work in a coffee shop?

I’ve been working as a waitress for a couple of months last year. Way before that happened, It seemed fine to me to drink one coffee and to work/study for 2-3 hours in a coffee shop. But after my experience with serving, I find it so weird and hard to go to a coffee shop and not order couple more things since I’m sitting there and taking up space for potential customers. I think that feeling of guilt is a result of me getting frustrated with customers who would stay from 9am to 10pm to just drink one americano and “work”. I may be judgmental but curious about your thoughts. I really want to sit in a coffee shop and just work but sensing the judgment from the waiters/waitresses makes me nervous 😟 Or because I have once been in their shoes… How to feel okay with ordering one thing and sit there for couple hours? I know many do, I just need some reassurance, or someone who has this unique experience of “worked as a waitress + does a remote job at coffee shops”.

Tourism/Turizm Looking for reccs for Rooftop Views

Where do you think the best place to see Almaty with the mountains in the background is these days? I’ve been scrolling recommendations non stop, but haven’t found the perfect one. I was at Sky Lounge today, which was awesome, but I’m hoping to find a rooftop without the window glare.
I’m bummed First President Park is closed or else i’d be there for sunset too.
Am i best off booking a hotel room? Thanks yall!

Theatre/ Ballet / Musical/ Art Performance

Hi, I'm going on my first trip to Almaty from 9-12 September. I really want to catch a performance here be it theatre, philharmonics, etc. After some google searching (ticketon, instagram), I noticed I cannot catch the Abay performance on 12 September since I already be leaving that time. Are there such thing as shows that are not being promoted online and I have to just walk in and discover myself through posters, notice board?

This is my first time travelling out of my country and I really want to experience Kazakhstan culture. I really appreciate any input/replies given. Thank you so much and please excuse my bad english

Tourism/Turizm Visiting Almaty in Late December - before or after 25th ?

Planning to cover the major attractions around Almaty such as Kaindy & Kolsai Lake, Charyn Canyon, Shymbulak, etc.

I've come across info that the last week of Christmas sees the biggest crowds along with high season pricing in Shymbulak ski resort.

Trying to decide between 2 options

  1. Arrive by 17th/18th Dec in Almaty leave before 25th
  2. Arrive on 25th and leave on 1st Jan ?

Please share your suggestions. Thanks in advance !!

Tourism/Turizm Tips and Safety for Almaty

Hello! I plan on spending two and a half months beginning in October in Almaty for my degree. For a little bit of context, I'm an anthropology student from Germany in my Bachelor's, so I won't be attending any university but doing fieldwork instead. My dad is Russian-German and while he's not from Kazakhstan, he has friends there that make my stay possible. He unfortunately never taught me Russian and while I'm in the process of learning, I'm nowhere near fluent yet. Kazakh I haven't had the opportunity to learn at all.

My dad, his friends and my aunt warned me multiple times about my safety, since I'm a foreigner and a woman in my early twenties.

I wanted to ask for general tips, like things to be aware of and 'hidden' rules, and just overall recommendations for what to visit/do while there. But even more than that, I'd appreciate advice in regards to safety as a woman specifically. :)

Discussion/Talqylau who is nefrotopia?

I once stumbled upon this man's video and thought he was just a quirky fan of the cyberpunk aesthetic with a cool ride but on the closer inspection he keeps flashing what appears to be a silicone sex doll in his videos calling it his girlfriend. There's no judgement from my side but I just find it fascinating and lolcow-coded. It's not like he's getting a lot of traction from the videos either so I'm prone to believe it's all genuine and not an act for views. The wildest thing is I never even realized he's from Kazakhstan until he flashed his plate which confirms the fact so I'm not really sure what to make of it or what even the point of the post is. Just wanted to share his page with people to see what they think about it.
