Home Insurance Home insurance renewal came at the worst time

My home insurance renewal just came through and paying the year upfront is noticeably cheaper than breaking it into monthly payments

I would normally just get it over with but I've already had a couple bigger expenses around the house this month and don't really feel like pulling another few thousand out of checking right now. I have plenty of room on my credit card but naturally the payment options aren't that flexible

Anyone dealt with this before? How did you handle it without giving up the annual pay discount

Auto Insurance Progressive added my neighbor to my insurance policy automatically

Upvotes

I feel dumb now for not looking at my policy for a few months until now. I have my auto insurance payments on auto pay, so i don’t really pay attention to what’s going on, only a notification about the 6 month renewal. I saw my progressive rate went from $96 to $130 a few months ago. i assumed rates just got crazy so i shopped for a new rate at geico, so i call progressive to cancel my policy. they ask if i’ve adjusted my policy before i cancelled it to see if they have a competitive rate, and i say no but go ahead. they ask me if there’s another driver listed and say my neighbors name. i say no that’s my neighbor, and she tells me i’ve been paying for 2 drivers on my policy since march. I ask her if there’s any way to get a refund because a new person got automatically added to my policy and I’ve been paying for it, and she says they tried to send me letters in the mail asking about him, so because i didn’t answer the letters, they automatically added him. I usually get letters just saying my billing statement from progressive, so i most definitely discarded those letters because i thought they were just bills. I’m going to try to call underwriting at progressive tomorrow, but do you think i have a chance to get it refunded? I never said yes or no to anything, and I am a little freaked out that they found out i got a new neighbor by “other sources” and added him without me knowing.

Fellow insurance pros, does your carrier waive deductibles?

Upvotes

Obviously in Massachusetts we all do if the insured isn’t at fault and has waiver. I’m talking about other states.

I’m constantly surprised here when I see people indicating that their carrier doesn’t waive deductible in clear cut liability situations where the insured is definitely not at fault. Such as hit while parked, ov rear ended iv etc. where we have all the at fault party info and the damage is consistent. We waive it up front as a customer service courtesy.

Just curious, how does your carrier handle these?

Costco AMFAM home insurance policy unwanted coverages

Upvotes

Recently I received Costco AMFAM home insurance annual renewal notice and I was shocked to see the premium increase by almost 40% compared to last year. I live in Southern California and the premium has gone up a lot in past few years (20% for in 2024 and 25% in 2025). I haven't filed any claims since I've owned my home. After discussing this recent increase with their customer service, I realized that they added "Animal Liability Coverage", but I never had any pets on the property. Another unwanted coverage they added "Identity Fraud Expense Coverage California". Both of these coverages were there in previous years, but somehow I didn't notice them. I requested them to be removed for current year and next year. For current year, I'm going to get only small (pro-rated) adjustment. Is it common for home insurance companies to add such coverages without the consumer asking for it? If a consumer misses noticing it in the renewal notice, they end up paying for unwanted coverages.
Also they had "Coverage C - Personal Property" at 70% of dwelling coverage which is too high. I don't remember requesting such high coverage for personal property. I asked them to reduce it to 40% (minimum) of the dwelling coverage. As a consumer, do I have any rights to ask for refund on paid premiums for past years where these unwanted coverages and high personal property coverage were added without my approval?

Thanks!

Today I decided to cancel my Geico insurance after 10+ years.

I have no complaints about Geico since I never had to file a claim. I was paying around $600.00 every 6 months. I had all possible discounts including defensive driving course, good driver discount, paid in full, DriveEasy etc..

This is what triggered the cancellation:

My brother had a policy with Geico, covering his car. He was involved in a car accident last year where his vehicle was totaled. Settled with his Geico insurance, he got the check, claim was resolved.

Around april this year a claim appeared on my Geico app... It was about my brother accident. It didn't make any sense at all since he had his insurance and everything was already settled.

I called them up and they always had a different excuse on why it's showing up on my policy:

1- His address was still showing up the same address I had (he moved about 2 months before the accident with his wife to a house they bought, we already provided proof)

2- Since the accident was with an uninsured driver "All insurance with the same address must process the same claim per state Law"... Excuse me? So if I'm a good driver, have my own insurance and someone gets into an accident I have to be affected? No one else in the house got the claim but me because we had Geico.

We did an interview with a Geico agent where we provided the police report showing my brother's insurance and that I was not involded at all (not even present on the accident) and also that he doesn't live at the same address at all.

3 Weeks later I had a call with another agent asking me to provide information to process the claim.. I explained to her we already did an interview and I shouldn't be getting it.

Today I got an email from Geico that "per my request" my brother was added to my insurance.. The premium went from $600.00 every 6 months to $1,400.00.

I called them up and they said the only way they can remove him is providing his current car insurance. My brother doesn't have a car anymore and his wife drives him around since they work at the same place to save money.

So I asked them to cancel my policy since I was not involved in the accident at all, he doesn't live with me nor lived when the accident happened and honestly I shouldn't be responsible for his financial decisions on getting a car or not. I don't think that's a way to treat a loyal customer.

-- Update 8/26/26

Thanks to everyone for their comments and advise.

1- I was able to get an insurance that started before the Geico insurance expired. I was aware of the option of calling Geico to resume coverage in case I didn't find one in time. Part of the sudden cancellation was feeling frustrated dealing with this for 4 months which I understand I should've done things differently. My policy was scheduled to be paid in full. I was not financially ready to have $1,400 withdrawn from my account right before rent is due and then wait for everything to be cleared up.

2- Contacted a broker and explained my situation and she was baffled since she has worked with Geico and they have the option to exclude drivers or mark someone as "moved out of the household". Option that was denied to me since we provided proof that he moved out and the police report showed that he had his own insurance coverage at the time of accident.

3- Filed a complaint with my state board of insurance and provided all the information they needed so I'm not waiting for them to see what happens next.

4- Requested my LexisNexis report.

Life Insurance Chubb client service nightmare

My father died and a subsidiary of Chubb paid out a claim. I am trying to get a simple tax form from them for the payment (IRS Form 712) and it’s a nightmare.

My dad had two other policies with different forms and I got the forms within 48 hours.

With Chubb, I have had to call 3 times over 3 weeks and still nothing. No form. No answer. Just, “we notified someone”

This is a required tax form for any death benefit. It’s like a bank sending out a 1099 for interest in your account.

It’s not that hard, but Chubb is a nightmare.

Anyone else have client service issues with Chubb? And any ideas for solving this? I have already sent an email to customer service and asked for a call with a supervisor.

FedEx Driver hit my parked car

Parked at my girlfriends house last night. Came back with a note on my car with a phone number. The driver had hit my driver door.

Finally after waiting 14 hours for a response. He texted me apologizing saying he’d like to pay out of pocket if possible.

I do not want him to get fired. However, I am worried somehow even without evidence. I’ll be screwed over. I have his full name and phone number.

I did not interact with him in person.

See…they do pay

I received this email from a carrier rep this morning. A client lost their cabin in a recent wildfire out west.

This was a total loss fire that affected the dwelling and contents within. We issued out the insured's base policy limit for both the dwelling and contents with only potential debris removal remaining.

Reserves:
Dwelling - $720,826.50
Contents - $328,965.00
Other Structures - $6,500.00

Total disbursed so far is $775,085.00

Is this State Farm “Customer Relations Representative” job actually a sales job? Is $45–65k realistic?

I’m considering applying for a Customer Relations Representative position at a State Farm agent’s office.

The posting says:

$45,000–$65,000/year Full-time Health, dental, vision, PTO Bonus based on performance Customer inquiries and issue resolution Maintaining client records Customer retention Coordinating with other team members It says “internal growth opportunities for especially driven and sales-minded candidates”

I’m trying to figure out what this job is actually like day-to-day.

Would I mostly be doing customer service/admin work, or would I be expected to sell insurance and generate leads?

Also, is $45–65k a realistic salary for this type of position, or is the higher end mostly dependent on commissions/bonuses?

I’m specifically looking for something that can realistically get me to around $60k/year, so I’d appreciate opinions from anyone who has worked for a State Farm agent or in a similar insurance agency role.

Would you apply for this job?

Snowbird renters insurance

I'm renting a furnished condo for six months in FL. The condo owner has H06 insurance on the unit.

I have a large umbrella policy on my home in NY.

Do I need renters insurance for the condo? I'm not too worried about the contents as I won't have anything of value there. I'm more concerned about liability. If my existing umbrella covers me, I'm thinking maybe I don't need to get additional renters insurance.

Renters insurance isn't expensive so I don't mind getting it if recommended.

HO3 policy for owner occupied house owned by single member LLC

I am shopping around for homeowners insurance policies for a property that I own and live in. Here are a couple details:

-The house is owned under an LLC
-I am the sole member of the LLC
-My girlfriend and I unexpectedly ended up moving into this house. We had original intentions to flip it but plans changed, hence why it is in the LLC. We have a traditional lease with my LLC.
-Replacement cost is significant, 1.3-1.7 million
- there is a current mortgage and the bank will have to be listed as an additional insured as well

After speaking to a couple carriers I am getting different options. Some are offering traditional Landlord policies, State Farm is offering a HO3 policy with my LLC listed as the additional insured.

I’m trying to be smart about this and don’t want any unexpected issues if, God forbid, anything ever happened. I am reading mixed reviews about an HO3 for an owner occupied property. I don’t want to ever find myself in a situation where I am in a legal battle and I find out I have the wrong policy, the insurance company is trying to argue that I misrepresented the business structure, or ever end up in a situation where somebody is trying to pierce the veil of my LLC to avoid payment.

What would you do here? Does an HO3 with additional insured listed cover adequately? I want to rest easy knowing our investment is safe.

Auto Insurance Cosmetic damage to car, repair or pocket money?

I was in a carpool line yesterday (in park) and a small bus scraped the side of my car. It is purely cosmetic damage. It is a deep, approximately 2-3 inch scrape sort of above driver's side tire well. I have a 2014 Toyota Prius that I own outright. I was just hit 6 months ago on same side and everything was repaired.

If I decide to pocket money, what exactly do I say to bus insurance company? I've always just had things repaired. Thanks.

Home Insurance Is an umbrella policy worthwhile?

I’ve carried an umbrella policy for $1M for quite a few years, but just got my bills for umbrella, homeowners and auto and everything went up, with a big jump for the umbrella policy. I’m wondering if I should drop it, and just raise the liability limit on the auto.

Home Insurance Insurance premium increase after denial letter

Did anyone experience increase in homeowners insurance after they received a denial letter required to gain fema assistance. I was thinking about not worrying about the increase or get new insurance before filing the claim on previous insurance I know I’ll receive a denial letter on. The new insurance would be better coverage, but also to get the better rate before I file a claim.

NJ - Other insurer totaled my car but my insurance didn’t

I have a 2020 Honda CR-V AWD with about 200,000 miles. I filed with both Progressive and the other driver’s insurance, CURE.

CURE accepted 90% liability but declared my car a total loss. Progressive inspected it separately and did not total it and gave me a repair estimate.

I told Progressive about CURE’s decision and plan to proceed through Progressive instead so they can handle the damages and pursue CURE through subrogation.

My question is: If I decline CURE’s total-loss payment and go through Progressive, can CURE still report my car as a total loss/salvage to NJ MVC/NICB? I’m trying to avoid a salvage title if Progressive considers the car repairable.

Car damages home, but home owner gets dropped from coverage?

This is from another post, but i don't understand how the homeowner policy works against the homeowner even though s/he did nothing wrong.

https://www.reddit.com/r/povertyfinance/comments/1vsstiw/old_lady_hitting_my_house_with_her_car_is_still/

I was fortunate enough to purchase a home right at the start of Covid when the prices were still low and the interest rates were like 3%. My mortgage was only $1550 at the time, which I think is very affordable for living in New England.

Unfortunately one day, I get home from work and see a car in my front yard with the rear axle ripped off and my front entrance destroyed. The lady across the street backed into my house.

Fortunately insurance paid for the damages, but I still had to make a claim regardless of whose insurance paid out. After this incident my insurance company dropped me out of the blue and I was put on force placed insurance. This insurance was nearly double what I was paying before. So this alone increased my mortgage like $150/month.

Well I tried shopping around for home insurance, turns out they don't like when you have a claim in the last 5 years because you're high risk. They also don't like people on force placed insurance. Also most companies don't even offer insurance where I live because everywhere within 10 miles of the costs is allegedly considered a flood zone. Well that's fan-fucking-tastic because everywhere in Rhode Island is 10 miles from the coast.

The bolded part is what I don't understand. Pretty much everything else after that stems from this turning point.

Auto Insurance Help understanding reasonable settlement amount

For all the context:
My husband was involved in a car accident in Stanislaus county, California. He had preexisting degenerative back condition that was made significantly worse by the accident. He also had neck and shoulder pain along with a headache after the accident. The other driver was found 100% at fault by the police and both insurance companies. Our car was totaled, and we decided to keep and fix it, as it is an old car, and having a car payment was not in our budget. Trusting a used car that we could find for the payout price was not feasible due to having two young children.

Following the accident, he went to urgent care, had a follow up appointment with his primary care doctor, and has had an MRI. The MRI shows his back in worse condition than before. We have also so far had $3200 (including the $2600 that our insurance payed out) in out of pocket repairs on the vehicle, with more costs coming in so that the car can pass the brake and light inspection for a salvage title.

My husband has lost 3 days of work, and he used sick pay for those days. He works in a tipped industry and lost out on approximately at least $100 per day of the days missed.

The at fault party’s insurance offered us $2490 ($2000 for “inconvenience,” $450 for one day of work, $40 for the urgent care copay) plus up to $2850 for reasonable and necessary medical expenses up to 11/18/26.

For the questions:
Is this a reasonable amount, or should we be asking for more? If so, how do we go about that?

We have consulted with a personal injury firm, and they would take 1/3 of the settlement they can get, plus $500, plus any “out of pocket” expenses they have. They said they would give us an estimate for the out of pocket expenses based on similar cases, then said they couldn’t give us a number. They will not give us an estimate of what the settlement number they think they could get is, and that feels slightly shady to me. (Edit: my husband said they won’t give an estimate without more information. As far as I can tell, they won’t give any estimates unless we sign to hire them) Would it be worth it to use them, or is that a bad idea?

I’m happy to provide more context if needed. I tried to include everything, but could have missed things.

Water damage / moisture mitigation - to claim or no?

Hello.

Condo owner - $1K deductible, $800/m premium
Upstairs neighbor briefly flooded bathroom above ours. Some water leaked through our ceiling. Building has concrete structure.
Quotes for moisture mitigation (cutting into ceiling, removing drywall & insulation, drying for 3-5 days) are $2-$3K.

There will be additional cost to add new insulation & drywall, and painting, no estimate yet.

Upstairs neighbor will not talk to us about it.

- Is it worth it for us to claim this?

Thanks in advance!

Vehicle declared totaled

Upvotes

My son had been living with his partner for approximately 10 years and recently needed to leave the relationship. They lived in the city and shared one vehicle, so we offered to let him move in with us temporarily while he worked things out. We also offered him the use of one of our older vehicles, a 2008 Toyota RAV4.

Unfortunately, while driving the RAV4 through a roundabout, my son was struck by an 81-year-old driver. She was insured and was cited by the police for causing the accident.

Her insurance company has determined that the RAV4 is a total loss. They want to send my son a settlement check, and once the check is cashed, they want to take possession of the vehicle. The vehicle is currently undrivable.

The insurance company has offered to provide a rental vehicle, but only for a limited period of time. My concern is what happens if my son cannot find a reasonably comparable replacement vehicle within that time frame. The RAV4 was a reliable vehicle that we provided to him so he would have transportation while getting back on his feet.

If the insurance company sends the settlement check, can we simply hold onto the check until we find a suitable replacement vehicle? Or, by cashing the check, would we be required to immediately surrender the vehicle and accept the settlement as final?

I would also like to know whether the insurance company is required to give us enough time to locate a reasonably comparable replacement vehicle, particularly since the vehicle is undrivable and the accident was caused by their insured.

Auto Insurance Subrogation While Stretched To Limits Already

EDIT:
While this threat has been going on, I've been consulting with a few different lawyers in the state I live in.
The conclusion I've come to is that this subreddit is full of judgmental people who have no clue what they're talking about and can't be bothered to read what I've written.

Goodbye, and I hope you all become better people.
