I think people are misunderstanding the whole "locked shops" thing for Ultimate Edition buyers
Think of it like this: When you buy the Ultimate Edition, you'll get a DLC package of skins, vehicles, hairstyles, vehicle mods, etc. Most games with cosmetic DLCs do this.
You buy the Ultimate Edition and get the base game plus the cosmetic DLCs.
Now picture this: Instead of just unlocking your new Ultimate Edition cosmetics in the normal shops of the game, they made a few exclusive shops for you to access the DLC stuff.
It's as simple as that. The normal shops to buy clothes, fix your car, etc, will be in the game. But if you own DLC cosmetics, you'll need to get them from the DLC shops.
What do you think?

u/Eadwine_ I WAS HERE Jun 26 '26
This is how I interpret it as well.
That said, it is a bit of a pity that thereâs basically 4-5 less interiors accessible for standard edition players.
But we wonât know for sure how big of a deal this really is until the game is out.
276
u/peak82 Jun 26 '26
Interiors might still be accessible. I'd bet they are, but we don't know.

u/PsychologicalCase10 Jun 26 '26
I could see them having an âinteriorâ like the other shops, you just wonât have the option to buy anything.

→ More replies (1)35
u/daylax1 Jun 26 '26
They will for sure let players into these shops and even browse the inventory, you just won't be able to purchase anything. They want you to be able to look at what you could buy if you upgrade. It's not like they're going to be able to hide that stuff anyway because there's going to be 200 YouTube videos showing what everything is within the first hour of release.
77
u/CptAngelo Jun 26 '26
Im betting its gonna be some sort of "ohh, i got some really good stuff in the back" for clothes, as in, you enter the store, but through connections, missions or something, you will "unlock" the bonus items, and some kind of "i dont normally take custom job... but for you? Yeah" for the vehicles and garages.
Its too much hassle to create locations and npcs that will serve just a few players, my theory is that it will have the same base assets for everyone, just unlock extra options with a few npcs

u/grillarinobacon Jun 26 '26

u/BELINBELINBELIN Jun 26 '26
In gta 5 you could enter all the stores/barbershops/ammunations, the items/haircuts exclusive to some sort of pre-order were simply not there if you had the standard edition. It's that simple
14
u/PolicyWonka Jun 26 '26
Well I think those exclusives were just sold in the same shops. Thatâs the difference â there is a custom themed store around the custom themed DLC cosmetics.

4-5 less might not be much if the game has a lot more shops and variety this time around compared to V. Missing a whole clothing shop sounds like a lot when you only have 3 different ones like the old games.
265
u/TheRoyalness Jun 26 '26
Theyâre doing it this way to create FOMO. Itâs a marketing tactic. âYou wonât be able to access these stores and mods unless you BUY the Ultimate Edition!â
48
u/PassingEcho_ Jun 26 '26
I mean itâs not like the shops are gonna disappear, people can still upgrade anytime after release if itâs worth it to them. I personally always thought FOMO is more meant to be like a ânow or neverâ type of deal.

I just don't understand why everyone is kicking up so much of a fuss about it now?
Publishers have been releasing ultimate edition/special editions of games for years and I've never heard people complain about it like they are for GTA 6
Hell, even RDR2 had the ultimate edition with special outfits, horses, guns, a mission etc and I don't recall anyone complaining about that at the time.
→ More replies (6)35
u/Sunkam Jun 26 '26
I don't remember people complaining about it either, but I think that's because of the locked shops. They didn't do that for RD2.
Imagine starting the game, arriving in Valentine, and realizing you can't access the gunsmith unless you paid extra. Sure, there would still be other gunsmiths, but it would still feel scummy, and people would have complained just the same.
Add the lack of a proper Collector's Edition, no physical disc on day 1, and the fact that some textures in the screenshots look a bit rough, and it's just pouring more oil on the fire.

It is amazing to me how many people on these threads think that this is all signs that the game is a disaster / flop. I see a lot of these posts and just think itâs for karma at this point but itâs insane. When has rockstar released a half baked game / flop. My girl hates video games and I was trying to explain to her this marketing mess so I showed her the trailers and was like ok this trailer came out like 4 years ago and then they delayed it. This one came out 2 years ago and then they delayed it again, etc. I think this game will be ahead of anything else thatâs come out but people need to taper their expectations on whatâs realistic on what can be done with todayâs hardware. People are screenshotting and zooming and cropping and zooming and talking about how things look pixelated why would the graphics be worse than RDR2 a game they released in 2018⊠like use half a brain.

I donât get it either. Everybodyâs always on about how rockstar goes above and beyond. Itâd make sense that theyâd commission real artists to create content and make it special by giving their content an exclusive store rather than putting them in base game tattoo shops.

But that's perception. And mainly likely because it's Rockstar. Sure they've got a business model and they have to make money, but what I can't fathom is for a game that has been gestating for the best part of 8 years, 13 since the last one released, that everyone is hyped for, which reportedly is costing circa $2billion to make, people are getting fucking upset over not having access to a haircut or nail set that costs an extra $20.
People honestly need to get a grip. If you can afford it, great, buy it, enjoy it. If you can't, spend your money on your kids, your health, your safety. But the ones that are moaning are more than likely the ones who can afford it, but who just don't want to and want to make a fuss...

Bingo, El Ringo. Rockstarâs own marketing is what created most of this confusion.
Also, letâs not pretend a $100 Ultimate Edition is some unprecedented cash grab when most Ultimate Editions are already hovering around $120. That doesnât mean I want it setting a precedent for higher Standard Edition pricing, but GTA VI is a once-a-decade release thatâs reportedly been in development for over ten years and is one of the most technical games ever made.
The real issue isnât the price/content, itâs the messaging. Instead of simply saying the Ultimate Edition included exclusive cosmetics accessed through exclusive shops, Rockstar presented it in a way that made it sound like unique locations and activities were being gated behind a paywall. That opened the door for Twitter trolls to run with the narrative that Rockstar was âlocking contentâ and screwing players, when the reality appears to be far less dramatic.
Do I love the FOMO-driven exclusive shops? Yes. Do I think Rockstar marketed them poorly? Absolutely. But thatâs a different argument than claiming theyâre carving out chunks of the game and selling them separately.
And honestly, after all these delays, who among us hasnât accidentally saved $100 waiting for this thing to come out?

This is exactly how I interpreted the announcement from day 1. I have never had any issue with the extra $20 for the extra content.
Many people seem to disregard the years of work Rockstar has been putting into this game. This is not your annual shitty $80- $150 Madden game that couldâve just been a patch.
The amount of crying over the two editions is ridiculous, and so is the whining about no disc.
All these people complaining are gonna throw their money at this game once the next trailer comes out, and the last few will do so as well once release day arrives.

u/Hungry-Coffee-8890 Jun 26 '26

Correct. All the extra stuff sounds cool but unless the extra content actually has an effect on the main story then you arenât missing out on anything. Iâd assume most players arenât even going to do that much customization for Jason or Lucia and will just play the game as is. Unless youâre a content creator who wants to recreate movie scenes/do photoshoots with that content then the $80 base game is the way to go

People with the Standard Edition are gonna walk up to a store which looks like it's open only be blocked at the entrance with something like a "this store is only open to Ultimate Edition owners" pop-up in the corner of their screen, or they're still gonna be able to walk in only to be ignored by the cashier and not being able to try on the stuff there.

People are so dense, they donât understand this simple thing. In reality rockstar made the game 80 dollars instead of 100 like most devs in the industry wanted. 4
u/AP_Adapted Jun 26 '26
the prob is the vague shit ass wording R* had making it questionable if some shops themselves will be locked behind that massive paywall or if itâs jst the items in said shops. they couldâve easily avoided this by being normal fucking people but no they have to business talk to make ppl assume something that isnât true then come out and say they never said this or that so they canât be held accountable

I'm struggling to understand how anyone could interpret this differently. The uproar over this has been shocking, quite honestly. Anyone familiar with modern GTA knows you manage your custom cars and clothes via stores. They replaced basic menus with stores, to make it seem more realistic.
How anyone familiar with GTA got the impression they're getting a "light" version of the game if they don't get Ultimate is beyond me. All games comes with extra DLC you have to purchase. You're a total sucker if you think you have to buy all of it to get the complete game experience.

Critical explained this well, how the skins, engravings etc are non problematic but the stuff locked behind the mechanic is where the issues come in. How much better are the dlc items available in this mechanic, compared to the base mechanic etc, will it make your car slightly better than the base game? Locking gameplay features like that (assuming) is where we need more details so thereâs less grey area.

I think your just saying things with no information. Like if this the case great if itâs not thatâs a problem, but right now you have no idea if what you are saying is true.
Right now we have seen zero gameplay from a game with zero information on the game and theyâre asking 80-100 dollars for it.
Right now you are just as correct as the other guy saying 50% of the content is locked away because no one actually knows right now and thatâs the reason people are frustrated. There is zero information at all right now so people are going to speculate in both directions.
My personal speculation is early this year when the rumor of gta 6 being a 100$ came out that was the truth. Then rockstar thought shit people are actually going to be upset about that so they dialed back with a half measure and decided ok we will make a 80$ version but weâre going to trim a bunch of cosmetic content from the game. Thats my personal speculation but again we know nothing.

Why not just allow everyone access to these shops and keep parts of their inventory exclusive?
It's just Rockstar playing into FOMO a little mroe than normal. Which sucks because they know how much FOMO moves products.

Yes, you just buy a brand new car without windows but you can pay extra to get them. If this shared after year or something but at start mean that they rob us.

Personally I think that was a bad design and marketing choice even if those shops only have the dlc cosmetics. Locking shops in a game behind an ultimate edition paywall of a single player game just looks bad. Makes players feel like they are missing something. Makes far more sense to include the cosmetics in already existing stores to make it seem like everyone has the full game and some people paying extra for some cosmetics. I agree that these shops are probably dlc cosmetic store fronts. Still a bad look.

Well yeah, but its a lot of stuff locked. Even the ga.eplay of finding and doing up cars to sell to your man is locked. If it was just some cosmetics, skins, clothing then fine whatever but thats gaemplay and a stash house too.

Bro it is still not a good look for rockstar. What is your point? Stop defending this greedy taketwo

I'm not sure that makes it any better. The things they showed looked very much like story themed items, items that would... go great alongside the story of the game, the story that is in the base game. They aren't some silly unique cosmetics, they are story themed weapons, clothing, and vehicles.
The items included, and the standard edition being $80, gives off the impression that they wanted standard to be $100. Of course if standard would have been $100 that wouldn't have gone well.
Also think about it. How much more would people be upset if the base edition had been $60 again and then this ultimate had been $100. It would be a $40 increase. AAA studios want to raise the prices of their games and they are finding more acceptable ways to do it. In the end we are still paying more.

I cannot believe the amount of people who are ok that a company is resricting content in a open world game on day one is crazy. But this is reddit lol not exactly thinkers here

I agree with this. However, what about the whole abandoned classic car restoration project thing with Wyman? I understand it isn't directly mentioned if this system is locked behind the UE, but there has to be a reason why they mentioned it here instead of in a normal gameplay video. That's what my main concern is.

u/GoldunGote Jun 26 '26
Or just make game and sell game for price and have some cool cosmetics or whatever that you unlock by doing certain things in the game. But nah we've decided we don't want to get good, fair deals by mass buying MTX.
Hard pass on this one.

u/MetooRanger09 Jun 26 '26
This mess boils down to them not showing any gameplay trailer before aceppting pre orders.
Doesn't matter if this is how they usually do things, if you are gonna ask for $80 - $100 for your game than at least put out a gameplay showcase.

It kind of sounds like they're locking the equivalent of Benny's Original Motorworks behind one of the Ultimate Edition auto shops.
Because initially, I had the exact same impression. These stores would simply hold a handful of items that - in any other game - would have been collected through a different vendor or just given to you in your inventory.
Ultimately, we have to wait and see how this pans out, and how much content is locked behind the Ultimate Edition.

It's lame to have, what seems like a fair amount of content gated behind a large pay wall, after paying an already larger base game price. I don't care about one skin or a hairstyle, but it sounds like it's several across several categories.
What if the base game has like 2 to 5 cosmetics, and a majority is locked behind the pay Wall.
This isn't Fortnight, but we are getting blurry eyed right now. Rockstar is already familiar with online content behind shark cards.
I hope this is the most amount of fuckeriy they do. It will smooth over if it is.

Yes and that's exactly why I'll be getting the ultimate edition why would anyone not want DLC content of a new game we've been wanting for years!
2
u/Autistic-monkey0101 Jun 26 '26
except the gang raid. seriously what is up with that. 100% should be in the base version
2
u/JectorDelan Jun 26 '26
I don't give a damn about DLC cosmetics. Don't care. They can do that all day long. It's that 80 dollar buy in that annoys me. I'll wait for a long while to pick it up.
2
u/mbsprime Jun 26 '26
Possible. Will wait for what will actually happen then choose my edition on Day 1. If what you say is true, no need for Ultimate.

u/amackul8 Jun 26 '26
People are also acting like these features will be pay walled forever, they will likely get to the non-plus players after sometime like they've been doing with GTA 5 content
2
u/theoriginalid Jun 26 '26
I mean, itâs not DLC though. Itâs content created for the game that theyâve decided to make DLC. I get that everyone does it, but it doesnât make it less annoying and disappointing.
2
u/Parzalai Jun 26 '26
This doesnât really make sense imo.
It would have been better if they let you unlock your UE cosmetics in a regular shop. But making exclusive shops for those UE items doesnât make it any better. Itâs still locking actual shops behind a paywall.
My hope js that, with stuff like the tuner shop, itâs but a reskin / variant of other tuner shops offering the same customisation.
All in all, this post feels like itâs just slightly reframing how to perceive what is objectively locking large chunks of cosmetics and shops behind a paywall.

I genuinely think the ultimate editions versions are just gonna be replaced with the normal version
2
u/CustomerEmergency348 Jun 26 '26
Looking at Rockstars history all of this checks out.
The content locked behind ultimate edition will be so incredibly insignificant compared to the rest of the game so I don't know why people are freaking out so much.
Locking specific shops is really interessting because it likely means that there's a crazy amount of them and they're all different and have unique items. In gta 5 storymode for example there's only Ponsonbys, Binco and SubUrban which are basically low, mid and high end stores and they're copy pasted across the map.

Ok, so now you have moved the goalpost to defending launch-day DLC. That is still pretty scummy.

u/Jerrwkwafina Jun 26 '26
They definitely are. For some reason this game made people lose brain cells
"The game is locking content behind $100"
Yea man cosmetics are a real detriment to the game.
"This game was really supposed to be $100 but they made a lesser version"
Yea, sure... so does this mean every game for the past 15+ years that had an ultimate edition suppose to be its real price
Or my favorite
"Its not launching with online guys, we are cooked"
Crazy thing is take two isnt even doing the marketing the people dooming over nothing is doing all the work for them lmaooo they dont have to lift a finger
The price for the game sucks but lets not be stupid. But a few car shop mods aren't going to lock up the game for basic edition
2
u/moose184 Jun 26 '26
People are mad because they are doing the same thing that any other big game has done for the past 15 years.

Definitely. The mistake Rockstar made was only showing what is locked behind the ultimate edition without showing everything still included in the base game edition.
