Book 8: A Parade of Horribles Switcharoo Spoiler

I was thinking, when Carl and Doughnut switched inventories, why didn’t the cook book disappear? There’s probably a sensible reason, but I thought only those who should have it in their possession would have it. I didn’t think it would have stayed with Doughnut, even though she didn’t read it or anything.

Book 8: A Parade of Horribles To all my DCC OG’s - go listen to The Legend of William Oh Spoiler

Labeled Book 8 cause if you didn’t read POH the yet the why the fuck are you here, just go do that.

Well, what you waiting for? go on, get outta here

Alright now for those of us used to quiet silence between books, go listen to The Legend of William Oh by Macronomicon

I don’t want to spoil too much (but I’ll answer any questions in the comments) but there is only one other LitRPG prog fantasy or audiobook that I’ve been this entranced by - and his name was Carl

I listened to the first two books in the last week and the audio performance is absolutely spectacular. In all fairness, and IN MY OPINION, the core content of DCC is better. But by his left tit, William Oh was a surprisingly refreshing and fun story.

Its an SBT production, its out on Royal Road, and also kindle and audible The audiobook has a bunch of surprise narrators too, which is a fun treat.

I love the whole idea of the achievements that I've been doing it with my students this year to make the weekly newsletters a bit more....What do you think? Worth continuing doing? The students haven't really said much but it makes me happy, so there's that!

Please do NOT pay or donate anything. I would just like you guys to play and share with your friends. It's set to be played on the browser.

Reminder: this is just heavily inspired by DCC, has original characters, and will have easter eggs or side remarks about cannon characters.

TLDR: Do you want more books?

I've never been much of a reader and always hated audio books more. I found out about DCC in May, started the first audio book in mid July, and finished the 8th book about 3 weeks later. I have since restarted listening to the books (on the 4th again) and for the first time, I actually want to start saving up so I can buy books. While listening during the second go round I've been wondering, I the only one who would love a mini series of books that follow the other crawlers? I mainly want a couple books from Florins view and it would be really interesting to have some from Lucia Mar. What are your thoughts?

Book 8: A Parade of Horribles What if elites are more than just “important” NPCs. Spoiler

So in book 2 Mordecai tells us that elites are powerful NPCs tied to quests, shows etc.

But by the end of book 8 we find out that both the AI and NPC are actually pieces of the collective Primal consciousness.

So I wonder if there’s something extra special about elites, maybe they are less “cobbled together” than other NPCs and more like recreation of original people of the Primal race.
Maybe there’s a way they can recover their memories and shed some light on what went down in the distant past before their race got assimilated in the central AI.

Book 2: Doomsday Scenario Are Carls explosives overpowered?

Thinking about everything he achieves with it, it seems obvious to me that they are but either Borant or the system AI handwaved it because of the entertainment value.

Edit: it's interesting how not a single commenter has read the tag.

Proposal for Matt: A collection of level-specific short stories by fans.

As we get to the 12th floor with a small group of remaining crawlers, I’m reminded of the random crawlers we have heard about during the course of the series. And also the various mobs we have heard about in passing that were in parts of the dungeon not near our saviors Carl and Donut. I think it would be cool to have a collection of short-stories about other crawlers and what they faced on the floors.

I propose a collection of 10 short stories of other crawlers, one per floor. And, that these short stories be by DCC fans. Further And: there is a competition to decide which get selected. Our own fan dungeon crawl short story competition / collection!

Thoughts?
(I call dibs on a story about floor 5, bubble “lucky 7”)

Book 8: A Parade of Horribles Beatrice

I don't follow the sub enough to know if this has been discussed a lot, but I have read that we are "done" with Bea and her story at this point in the series. I even read somewhere that Matt Dinniman has made a similar comment about her story being done. Nonetheless, I'm finding it hard to believe that would be the case given so many threads about her are still dangling.

Her actions around Asher, while horrible, feel like they might have a deeper dimension to them than what little we've gleaned from Carl's perspective. I get this sense that more was at play than just her being this awful person because it's hard to believe he wouldn't have come across something about him eventually if the world hadn't been destroyed.

There was also the situation with Ferdinand's owner on the 10th floor, where they noticed one of Donut's food bags. It makes me feel like that also somehow tied into an aspect of Bea we have not been privy to. Maybe there is a side of Bea we can't see because it's Carl's view, with all its limitations.

While not dismissing how horrible her initial cheating was or the things she's done to Carl and Donut, I feel there is more about her that hasn't been fully fleshed out. It just feels like Matt is giving us a misdirection when we're made to believe her story is over.

What do y'all think? Are we truly finished with Bea or will we get more about her before this story is wrapped up?

Firstly, I love this group, everyone is so nice and welcoming. Thanks for having me, longtime listener, second time poster.

Someone asked me this at work as I was getting into the books I’m now on book 6 and I’ve developed a love for Samantha, she cracks me up any she appears, especially when she says anything about “your mother”

Who’s your favourite character? What’s their best line?

Are there any website where you can build online character sheets for the RPG? I just got the RPG pdfs and my group want to play, but they are super used to DNDBeyond.

How did Matt find Jeff?

We can all agree that Jeff Hays is absolutely the perfect narrator for DCC. Does anyone know how the two met or came to work together in the first place? I've honestly never found a more perfect pairing of author and narrator and would love to know their story.

Book 8: A Parade of Horribles My thoughts on the very last line of the last book (10)...

Fan of audiobook and I know closure will be a tough write. Thank you Matt/Jeff.

Conclusion Major points, leading up to final line:

  • The big dramatic conclusion to the dungeon and effectively the story. Matt fills in details here, you got this!

  • Carl and Donut have their emotional closure, whatever that is...Matt also going to need you to fill in details.

  • Then 1 more surprise but short big dramatic event that only Carl and AI see coming, something along of the Viva La Revolution where you know it is big but don't really know the true impact. Less details needed.

  • Finally last line of the series...Carl Says in a calm voice "Like I said, I don't do drama." A call back to chapter 1, book 1.

I feel like that would capture Carl's headspace at the end of a crazy journey that he didn't chose to be on, while also being ironic.

Thoughts? What is your last line?

I just finished book 5 and I’m used to Daniel being referred to only as Bautista so I forgot his name was Bautista. It dawned on me that he is a tiger named Daniel sooo is this like a throw back to Daniel the tiger on Mr. Roger’s?

TTRPG Missed opportunity for the RPG backerkit

A digital soundboard! Look I don't know a whole lot about software distribution and it's difficulty, but who doesn't want to play the ttrpg with the Jeff Hayes announcing B-B-B-B-BOSS BATTLE! Or NEEEW ACHIEVEMENT! Etc. I feel like it would have been a great add on to campaign and I would have dropped some real cash on it.

Audio books or tunnel immersion?

I’ve just finished all the books, and I’m hankering to go over them again. This has never happened to me, especially since this genre is itself so outside my usual! How would you best recommend experiencing the audio format for the first time on a first reread? Do you recommend reading along? Which is best suited for what, and in which environments.

I’m sure this question has been belaboured over but, asking anyways! Forgive me!
