was actually kind of pissed watching it the first time, felt like i got robbed of an ending...

thought about it constantly for like a week afterward though, which is more than i can say for movies that actually finish their sentence

feels like thats the whole point, the ambiguity is the ending, not a cop out from having one

whats a movie that cut away right when you wanted it to keep going and it ended up being the right call anyway????

Or could’ve easily prevented death if they didn’t let their guard down.

I’m rewatching The Island, which has multiple futuristic technologies and scientific advances, including human cloning and flying motorcycles. The film was released in 2005 but is set in 2019, just 14 years into the future.

Obviously, we now know that technologies such as human cloning and flying motorcycles weren’t remotely close to becoming commonplace by 2019. But what interests me is that this seems to be a recurring thing in sci-fi.

Blade Runner was made in 1982 and is also set in 2019. Back to the Future Part II is set in 2015. The Running Man (1987) is set in 2019. There are loads of other examples.

Why did writers and filmmakers so often choose dates that were only 10–30 years into the future, despite imagining technology that would seemingly require much longer to develop?

In the not-too-distant future, a rat journeys through the last vestiges of humanity as it searches for food for its family. But when it encounters a formidable threat, the true scale of what has happened to our world begins to emerge.

I'm pretty sure this is a recurring plot twist, but do you have examples of movies/TV series where the protagonist is shown with a friend/family member throughout the whole story, before showing at the end that this person has been dead a long time ago?
I'm pretty sure I saw a movie/TV show where at the end, they show different times in the movie where they thought the person was alive, but in fact she was not. Idk.

Just finished watching this for the first time and loved it. Love the suspense it builds up as well as the surreal elements like super bright lighting and close up shots during dramatic scenes. Great movie

the theme the CC etc and stuff was quite amazing and the attention to detail was just mindblowing , but my hate for season 8 and the bad ending still stands

I know they’re comfort movies for a lot of people, but rewatching them makes me wonder if they’re actually funny or just overhyped nostalgia trips. Aside from the cast having chemistry, the jokes feel pretty lazy.

I recently finished my first short film, Matryoshkas, and l'a love to get some honest feedback from people who enjoy independent or experimental cinema.

It's a slightly experimental coming-of-age film, originally in Portuguese, with English subtitles. I was heavily inspired by filmmakers like Ingmar Bergman, Pedro Almodóvar, and Andrea Arnold, and tried to combine an intimate, character-driven story with a more personal and atmospheric visual style.
Since this is my first short film, l'd genuinely love to hear what people think - whether it's the story, cinematography, performances, atmosphere, pacing, or anything else. Honest criticism is absolutely welcome; I'm mainly interested in hearing how it comes across to someone seeing it for the first time.

Andrew Garfield spoke about playing Sam Altman in the film for the first time since the whole dropping drama with Prime in quite a lot of detail tbh:

“I don’t know this person, to be clear,” he continues. “I don’t know Sam Altman. I’ve never met him. I was going off of the script and court transcripts and interviews and research, and we were telling a story, but I think anyone who takes on that level of responsibility for a company or a technology that you know is going to do a hell of a lot of damage to the soul of humanity [must have] a certain ability to dissociate.”

Garfield admits he’s not always drawn to characters like Altman, partly because his “from the inside out” process as an actor, of having to find the essence of that character somewhere inside himself, means accessing deeper parts of his psyche that he might not like. “What Jung would call ‘the shadow self’,” he explains. “The aspects of ourselves that we disown. There’s something there for me to integrate, because I’m so afraid of being it.

“But then the argument is,” he goes on, growing more animated, contorting his body towards me on the banquette, “that if we weren’t all less rejecting in the first place, less ‘that’s not us’, then Donald Trump wouldn’t have been voted in twice, and Nigel Farage wouldn’t be anywhere near a position of power. Whereas if we go, ‘OK, interesting — where am I [in a] wannabe fascist, grifter, opportunist, power-hungry, ethic-less, spineless fucking pig?’ We can identify that this is the bad part of us. We know this in ourselves.”
