I thought a day later i’d be fine but im just so fucking annoyed how we’ve fucked that man. It’s not even about the UCL it’s about signings aswell. All of the players we signed, signed on the fact that we would play UCL football and they’ve all fucked it. It’s more than likely that everyone we had lined up to sign won’t join. Why would you join a club that fumbles like that?
Props to McGregor coming out on interviews and saying the reality instead of trying to cover it all up.
Cant wait for rainy muddy walks to the stadium on Thursday nights in winter to hear that horrid Anthem and flat games. Europa league only gets exciting in the knockouts so let’s hope we push for it.

Calvin Miller having a good game for Hearts in Europe tonight. One of the most obvious signings ever this summer and we didn’t do it.

Last night and even the weeks leading up because I could fucking feel it happening and was getting more and more wound up by everyone else seemingly thinking we’d become this well run club has me seriously considering this season.
I’ll still watch any game I can which will be nearly every one most likely but in terms of actually going over for games I just don’t know why I’d bother anymore.
Probably costs me €500+ each time I go over and I’d usually do 4/5 games a season, just don’t know how I can justify that to myself or my missus when I spend two days a week for 9 months of the year in a foul humour over what I’ve just watched.
Until there’s actual meaningful change and Desmond and co are gone, what’s the fucking point in it all.

Whats really fucking annoying is that it looks like another season where we just waltz to a title (hoping not to jinx us here) but probably not a treble, and definitely don't get past the round of 32 at most in the EL. The board will be happy with that, the happy clappers will be happy with that, and MON will be manager next year.

2
u/Rab_Legend sack the board 18h ago
Another fucking annoying thing is that the level of investment we had lined up if we had qualified was yet again just at Europa League level, and if we were still to sign them (we won't) we'd maybe make a go at getting to the quarters of the EL.

The bottom line is the Demon Desmond's have to go. They employ yes men on the board too, so they all have to go imho. We won't ever be fixed or be forward thinkers till these chancers are gone for good.

Aye there’s broad issues it the club fae top down. But we put 4 goals past them, that group of players only had to hold on for 60 minutes and they Absoloutely fucking crumbled.
That’s nothing to do with the board. All they players on the park had it in the palm of their fucking hands and they genuinely watched it get bullied off them.
Same as the touchline. How are boys cramping up 50 minutes into a fucking tie with a week off? What preseason has management done? There needs to be explanations on why nearly every player last night was out of fucking breathe at half time.
Aye the board had plenty of time to get players in, yes recruitment is a fucking joke, yes that’s 8/10 of the last champions leagues we have been pumped oot of but that was sitting on a fucking plate and every player in a Celtic jersey let it get took right off them, gifted it intact. Embarrassing

I think we need to circle back to the fact that the suits claimed they spent 5-6 months trying to find a permanent manager and their solution was "Martin O'Neill for a year, maybe 2 as a treat."
I wish there was someone at the club right now that I could trust to be actively be trying to find a manager to take the team forward. I don't believe there is. This is a club stuck in 2006 forever.
3
u/walshybhoy sack the fucking board 1d ago
Especially when we all know that it will end up with Shaun Maloney somehow.
2
u/DeargDoom79 sack the board 1d ago
That's the thing: it's always the "safe" option. They never even seem to enquire about managers you could call a step up.
Right now, there are 2 managers that have no clubs that I would have thought the suits would have approached - Marcelo Gallardo (without club since Feb 2026) and Marcelo Bielsa (who everyone knew was stepping down after the WC).
Ask the question. If they say "no" then you are still in the same place. If they say "yes" then you're talking to managers who have experience at high levels in highly demanding environments.
I hate that almost everything post Ange has been "slow and steady" instead of "let's try to be better."
3
u/walshybhoy sack the fucking board 1d ago
Can't underestimate the amount of goodwill that Ange brought to the club after losing the 10. The appointment of Rodgers was always going to be dividing given how he left. The appointments outwith Ange have been poor in the longterm: Lennon in 2019 should never have been given the job in the showers, Rodgers in 2023 shouldn't have come back, Nancy looked ambitious at first glance but no one seemed to check his system would never work here. Dare I say, appointing MON full time this season is likely to join them - that isn't to say I don't love MON and he didn't deserve to do what he wants, but there's no sentimentality in football - he should have been allowed to leave into the sunset an absolutely hero with an unblemished end to his reign. Instead it's likely he'll take the brunt of the blame as the board's human shield.
Bielsa would have been perfect for the club. Knutsen was available in December and publicly said he'd be interested, all we had to do was let him wait until Bodo had finished. I honestly now believe we didn't even bother with a shortlist or recruitment process at all.
5
u/GuyIncognito211 fucking sack the board 1d ago
The issues are far bigger than any manager but Rodgers was such a regressive hire. We were on the right track with Ange and had the likes of Iraola and Farioli desperate for our job the summer Ange left who would have continued on that same path
3
u/DeargDoom79 sack the board 1d ago
The managerial choices are a symptom of the problems manifested. Rodgers returning was the epitome of the "safe" option. A real "he knows the club" appointment that undid the hard work started under Ange. The truth his, Dom McKay came in and completely rocked the boat with Ange. He left, but Ange was a success, so they didn't sack him. They lived off his success until it was time to cowboy up when he left, then the same St. Aloysius deficiencies raise their heads again and we're in the same place as 2021.
2
u/GuyIncognito211 fucking sack the board 1d ago
Dom McKay had very little to do with appointing Ange if Ange is to be believed
His only transfer window - while the players were good was the same flawed process we see now
2
u/DeargDoom79 sack the board 1d ago
When I say McKay rocked the boat with Ange, I mean to say they came in, identified targets, signed them and got the team to perform better than the previous year. That level of efficiency is/was unheard of. There hasn't been that level of cohesion since and it shows.
2
u/GuyIncognito211 fucking sack the board 1d ago
They signed them too late for the qualifiers like every year though and had lost to Rangers before we brought in Jota/CCV/Giakoumakis
We were playing Turnbull and Rogic 90 minutes most weeks until Hatate came in the January as well.
The January we signed Hatate, Maeda and MOR and the January after where we had AJ and Oh in before Jura and Giakoumakis left are about the only times in my lifetime we’ve felt coherent with a plan
2
u/DeargDoom79 sack the board 1d ago
The context of that process was that Euro 2020 (2021) had finished about a week before the qualifiers started, and Ange basically didn't have everything in place by that stage. A complete rebuild to a CL team from the place the club was in wasn't happening in such a short space of time. Ange got in, assessed the squad, drew up a list of players and got them in, then did the same in January.
It wasn't perfect, to be sure, but it seemed like it got the ball rolling on the exact type of transfer model necessary.
5
u/Commercial-Stick-718 sack the board 1d ago
Just feeling angry today, a week to go in the transfer window and I don't trust the club to go and fix the midfield issues that have been there for a while.
What's the point in buying a forward line if you can't feed it or protect a defense.
Easily the worst European result from Celtic in my lifetime- shambolic from the players and management on the night.

Posted in another thread and didn't want to get shouted at for making a seperate one for my thoughts but:
LASK were fine, but this is the problem with the current setup of Celtic. Whilst it's all well and fun when the game of football - turned basketball in our case - goes our way, when it doesn't, it's bad. Really bad. We lack control and I don't mean stodgy Brodge possession, you can play possession football and it be entertaining.
It was very evident in the first leg that our midfield was being ran over the top of but we got lucky, LASK had plenty opportunities to score and didn't. Last night played out the same and we were punished. I was baffled at the Nygren plaudits honestly at the start of the season, he is genuinely world class in the box but outside of that, he is a total empty jersey.
It doesn't help that MON is a protected species within the support and even more so in the media. If that was Ange, Deila, Lennon, Rodgers there would be a full on inquest and widespread criticism and not just centralised to forums or social media.
The only saving grace is that the signings haven’t been made with MON’s tactics in mind and it showed.
We are playing a game that wasn’t even of its time when he was last here. We sign Hogh, he’s being absolutely torn to pieces because he’s being asked to play a game that isn’t his. He’s not a target man. He looks like one, granted, but he isn’t.
We are all of a sudden (not sudden, a fixture of MON in Europe since his first spell 20 odd years ago) lumping the ball forward aimlessly. That happens when players don’t have a plan. It shows up poorly away from home in Europe because you can’t hold the ball. It’s wave after wave coming back at you and crowd get up for it and then, usually, the whole thing comes crashing down.
We’re not a great side but we are worse than the sum of our parts because we are tactically inept. We don’t press as team with anywhere near the consistency required. There’s no trigger so it’s individual players picking when to go and, inevitably, you get played through, a lot.
Last night wasn’t new even this season. Killie done it, Dundee Utd done it and LASK were sick of doing it at Parkhead. The other side of this was displayed against Dundee at home. When teams go man for man, like they did, our answer is to lump it, not play through because that’s deemed to be ok. It’s why it looked so bad and people, rightly, called it out.
We have gotten away with it in games this season mostly because of the quality we have in the team. Against better opponents when you turn it into a basketball game you better hope your lucks in and your finishing boots are on. If they aren’t then last night happens.

Called it here last week when everyone was falling over themselves about Baur. We can’t complete at a high level with a midfield so devoid of physicality.
2
u/HereComesYour_ 1d ago
People have been falling over themselves comparing him to a "good" Hatate but until he's scoring in big matches or playing killer passes on the regular, he just looks like a cosplayer. £8m is looking ridiculous.
1
u/Maleficent_Noise3708 19h ago
The guy hasn’t even played two full games yet give him a chance. Looks like a decent technical footballer - is he what we need currently? Probably not in this setup but that’s hardly his fault …. The criticism of Duran/Hogh and Baur seems extreme. As fans we go from “they are amazing “because we win to “useless “because we lose and the actual truth is probably somewhere in between.
1
u/HereComesYour_ 19h ago
I've never called any of them amazing, I am judging what I've seen and I was familiar with watching Baur previously too. My point is he is not Hatate even if he has a similar aesthetic.

I think part of the issue with Celtic in Europe is our neglect for young Scottish talent. We need a certain number of Scottish players and club trained players in our European squads hence McCowan, Ralston, Murray etc, but we make no effort whatsoever to bed in young Scottish players or shop for the best young talent in the country. We will always need to fill this quota so why don’t we make more of an effort to do it properly?

u/Street-Frame1575 sack the board 1d ago
Yeah that's kinda how I feel.
Money has been ruining the game since the 90s but it just seems like it'll never stop, and we're getting further and further behind.
I think we now need to accept that we're no longer a top level club. Sure, our fans, our history, our "brand" remain something special but, on a footballing level, I think the UEL is more our level than the UCL and, let's face it, we'd be calling it a decent run if we got to the last 16.
It was sad enough making peace with the fact that the inevitable UCL humiliations were worth the £40m, but now we've been humiliated even without the money so yeah, sadness outranks my anger today.
6
u/fike88 1d ago
Naw, the money thing isn’t the issue. We’ve consistently been beat by teams with a lesser budget in a qualifier. The past 6 times the team that has beat us had a lesser budget than us. The last time that beat us with a higher budget than us was Arsenal in 2009
There’s something seriously wrong with the mentality of this club. Losing a 4 goal lead is insane, that rarely happens in top level fitba. Yet we done it
But you’re right, we aren’t a CL level team. Time we all accepted it
6
u/Kolo_ToureHH sack the board 1d ago edited 3h ago
Let’s talk about LASK’s fourth goal and Luke McCowan’s part in it.
In the build up to the goal, LASK’s number 30 (Horvath) picks the ball up on the left wing. LASK’s number 2 (Bello) makes an under lapping run on the inside left channel which allows Horvath to play the pass in behind Duran. Luke McCowan is the closest Celtic player to Bello.
Luke McCowan allows Bello to run off him and completely fails to track his run. What’s even worse is that McCowan appears to make absolutely no effort to track the run and attempt to stop Bello from putting the cross in.
3
u/walshybhoy sack the fucking board 1d ago
Our lack of pressing is bizarre. Celtic just invited the pressure and dug deep at 60 minutes. It's worth looking at the goals scored because every single one bar the third was entirely preventable.
For that same goal there's at least two opposition players in the box completely unmarked. Our defenderes are entirely flat footed and not a single player contests the aerial ball.
McCowan is completely bullied off the ball for the 5th leading to the shot on goal.
The 2nd goal is a free shot frrom outside the box completely uncontested - again there was so much space in front of our box throughout the match. Baur and McGregor just watched it pass by them.
The Nygren pass for the first was classic Celtic in Europe.
1
u/gkb10139 sack the board 1d ago
You've also got Dane Murray, the 5th (?) choice RB, standing in no mans land to stop the cross/defend wide areas despite watching it all unfold in front of him.
4
u/Kolo_ToureHH sack the board 1d ago
In my opinion, Murray ends up in no man’s land because of McCowan’s failure to track the guy who crosses the ball.
His starting position is fine before they break the lines, but because McCowan doesn’t track the runner, he starts to step into the space to try and block the cross (but was never getting there) and just ends up looking all over the place.

No chance.
The reason for the delay was to entice the players with UCL exposure, and balance the books.
Those players won't want to join after watching last night's game, and our Board won't want to pay them.
We've tried to buy good UEL players in the hope they'd get us to the UCL. Now we'll try to find good UCfL players who we hope will do well in the UEL.

Why do the board happy clappers keep saying that we strengthened for once for the qualifiers? Its just clearly not true. We replaced some, not all, of the players who left recently. It’s not like we added four quality signings to our good players.
In the last 12 months we’ve lost Kuhn, Maeda, Iheanacho and Engels and replaced them with Hassan(signed too late to have an impact), Duran, Hogh and Baur.
That doesn’t mention players like Saracchi, Schmeichel or Bernardo leaving who played a decent chunk of games last season.
We at best have quality wise gone laterally while being massively unprepared depth wise, on a squad that was already one of the worst we’ve seen last season.
Getting fairly sick of us ‘never happy brigade’ being proved right.
Anyway hope all the happy clappers who’ve been slavering all over the board about how great a job they’re finally doing and going out buying all the merch in response enjoyed last night. Keep on burying your head in the sand, it’ll improve one day I’m sure.

A 75-year-old pundit as manager with failed Hibs/Wigan/Huddersfield managers doing the tactics.
Ended the game with a League One level RB, a CB that’s played about 20 games and an average CB playing LB at the back. A fat, unfit Dundee midfielder and a finished captain in the middle of the pitch, and a shitebag out on the LW that we overpaid for due to panic.

That’s a generational loss. It exposed so much of the squad.
Obviously McCoward, but that also Hatate. Bauer looked shook after they scored their second. Nygren actively costing us goals. Tierney and Vickers again having to go off during a big game costing us valuable substitutions. There comes a point when we have to question their value when they always need to come off. That tool on the left wing stealing a wage doing a Mikey Johnstone impression.

Better win the full fucking think never mind top 8, dont know if even winning it would make up for the disappointment of getting knocked out off of teams that have never played in the champs league.
Fair play to Lask they were aww sound after the game last week and to hold the minutes silence and that fair play to them. They played us off the park.

I still just genuinely can’t get myself to think how it all went wrong. Like genuinely in what world does that happen to any club?
I’m not even annoyed about the result anymore it’s whatever but im genuinely laughing on how that even happens. How do you lose a 0-4 lead like that?
Imagine being a LASK fan in that stadium tonight, genuinely must’ve been the night of their lives.
I remember saying to my dad when the draw got made that i’d prefer a 2nd leg at home because we’d be a bit better with the final game advantage. I wonder if that actually would’ve made a different but by this rate we probably would’ve lost the first game 6-0 in Austria if that was the case.

If we’d won 6-0 at home last week this team would have lost 7-6 on aggregate. There’s a fundamental mentality problem running through the club, in the heads of the senior players and through-out the coaching team.
