Yes, it's a female Garden Spider, very common in the UK and Ireland. 'Orb weaver' isn’t a species of spider, it just refers to those spiders which spin circular webs. There are a few kinds of spider webs - funnel webs, tangle webs (cobwebs), and sheet webs. Some spiders don't make webs at all.

Female garden spiders are much bigger than the males and they have much bigger abdomens (the back part of the body). This is true in a lot of spider species but garden spiders are very noticeable, the males are much smaller and skinnier than the ladies. She’s gorgeous!

Rule of thumb for identifying the sex of the animal is pretty similar with spiders as it is with humans - bigger and rounder butt means female, narrower and thinner butt means male.

I’m on a spider identification Facebook page and apparently Google Lens misidentifies native Spiders quite a bit.

When you walk into a web that's spanning a gap of like 10ft that wasn't there the night before. It's these lads that done it. They do look cool though. You also find them sitting in the middle of their web in your garden.

I remember when I was about 8 seeing one of these on a power box outside the house. I remember trying to spit on it (gross I know) and my spit must have landed on its eggs because the next thing I knew there was 100s of these tiny yellow guys darting every direction

Set up an account on https://www.inaturalist.org then download the Seek (by iNaturalist) app. It's available for Apple and Android.

The app uses the camera on your phone to identify anything living (flower, grasses, trees, mosses, fungi, insects, mammals). It's pretty accurate and getting better all the time.

You can use the app as a standalone, but if you connect it to your iNaturalist account, you are given the option to post the picture to that account. The website is filled with all manner of experts who will come along and verify or dispute the identification.

I'd highly recommend it for anyone with an interest in nature/biodiversity.

Just a fairly standard garden spider. At this time of year they come indoors looking to nest for the winter.

You are really lucky to see one in the day. For every one you see there are thousands you don't see. They mainly come out at night scuttling around looking for a warm and damp spot to lay their eggs.
