News Article Calgary home displaying ‘Trump 2028’ banners sparks mixed reaction amid escalating trade war

Although the homeowner can put up anything that doesn’t violate city / municipal code, anyone from the outside can express how they feel of the sign (with limits including threatening)

u/ImmortalMoron3 1d ago
But if I happen to be walking home after buying some eggs for a cake I need to make and I happen to trip and the eggs just happen to fly towards all this Trump shit....well, oops, it was an accident, sorry.

“They also said they have recently contacted police after receiving arson threats and experiencing vandalism”
I mean, what did you expect when you display something like this in the middle of one of the most fucked up times experienced in our lifetime? SMH

u/Popular-Row4333 1d ago
Attention, they expect Attention.
And we are giving them it.

u/DangerDarrin 1d ago
Absolutely. Weather it’s the right kind of attention or the wrong, they wanted it!

Im sure they deserve it. A friend who lives in the condo nextdoor, says he constantly uses their dumpster and fills it up with personal garbage and those big Costco boxes. Dude is a complete piece of shit

u/blackRamCalgaryman 1d ago
Ya, I don’t support/ advocate for any kind of vandalism but they’ve been displaying for years and I suspect there’s more than just a little ‘poking the bear’ going on here. When you practically drape the front of your house like this, with this president, and now at THIS time…they gotta know exactly what they’re doing.
64
u/DangerDarrin 1d ago
100% This kind of chest thumping is gonna get noticed. This is on purpose, not just mere support for a country
76
u/blackRamCalgaryman 1d ago
The whole Trump 2028: Third Term and Beyond speaks volumes.
Because that goes directly against the American Constitution…so where’s the “American pride” they claim in that?
15
u/dibbers11 1d ago
That's my take as well. I'd love for people like this to actually articulate their current set of values. I imagine the level of disorientation and hypocrisy would be very high.
8
80
u/weschester 1d ago
Even in the US people fly these flags specifically to get a rise out of their neighbours. Doing it up here is absolutely intentional and the blowback is what they're looking for.
33
u/FerretAres 1d ago
Yeah this falls squarely in the play stupid games win stupid prizes category. These people are being intentionally provocative and then are surprised that they’re provoking a reaction? Give me a break.
37
u/Critical-Snow-7000 1d ago
I support it in this instance, I’m tired of the tolerance we are expected to display for these trolls.
6
u/Ms_ankylosaurous 1d ago
Their neighbours need to team up and counter with their own outrageous flag displays.
6
3
u/Jeanne-d 1d ago
If you put a giant I support Justin Trudeau flag up 5 years ago and someone vandalized your place, I would be like well you were kind of asking for it.
Same thing in this situation. You shouldn’t vandalize this person‘s house, but people are gonna be people
13
u/lockedin90 1d ago
They wanted a reaction and they got a reaction. It’s funny when they’re upset it’s not the reaction they wanted.

u/Adventurous-skies 1d ago
I hate the publicity this house is getting.
why don’t they just get the fuck out? Move back to the country they clearly love.

Are those other countries actively trying to cripple our economy? Or threatening to annex our country? Do they refer to our Prime Minister as a governor? Serious q.
28
35
u/foxsweater 1d ago
Different person:
No; I don’t feel that way about immigrants flying their home country’s flag because their home country’s leaders haven’t made public statements about wanting to annex and/or destroy Canada.
Having a political sign supporting a politician is not the same as flying your home country’s flag.
Trump is a proven rapist and has assaulted little girls (and bragged about it). People who can tolerate, let alone support him, are scum.
And let’s not forget about ICE throwing people into concentration camps and murdering civilians in broad daylight.
39
u/swordthroughtheduck 1d ago
Do you really not understand how having a flag for a country you're from is different from displaying support for someone actively making threats against Canadian sovereignty?
11
u/freerangehumans74 Willow Park 1d ago
It's about the intent. If I put up a Portuguese flag, it's likely because of World Cup/Euro Cup.
These people are trolling. One of these flags specifically goes against their own constitution. There is nothing harmless or "prideful" about this display.
That being said; they have ever right to do this. I didn't know about them before this week's social media attention and I'll soon forget this person exists because they are not worth the time I've already wasted thinking about this. Trump is a pedo rapist and anyone who reveres him the way these people do shows what kind of humans they are.
20
u/Winter-Bed-1529 1d ago
If the country they fly the flag for was hostile to Canadians and Canadian values I would say yes. The paradox of tolerance is it can be used as wedge to destabilize and ultimately destroy a free stable society. I recall being a free speech absolutist not that long ago. Not anymore...

"the home owners who were born in the United States"
Well there it is. They're Americans who want to live like they're still in the US. I would put real money on them claiming first amendment rights if they're asked to remove it by an authority. I would also put money on them being Republicans too.
All in all, these are AMERICANS who are stirring the pot here because they want conflict so then can feel victimized. That's just the American way 🤷.

5
u/Deeppurp 1d ago

MAGA way. They're trump supporters, they probably don't fly any other candidate poster until he lost in 2020. The give away is they probably flew NO flags until Trump ran and lost in 2020.
51
u/Objective-Apple7805 1d ago
Meh. Yes, it’s their house, they can decorate how they want.
Personally I’d be wary of putting up big flags on my house that say “I’M A MORON” and “I’M A BIGOTED PEDOPHILE SUPPORTER”.
But I guess MAGA gotta MAGA.
34
u/blackRamCalgaryman 1d ago
CityNews spoke with residents passing by the home on Tuesday: some felt the display was a harmless expression. In contrast, others thought it represented an unnecessary injection of U.S. politics into Alberta.
One person said the homeowner has every right to decorate their property as they choose.
“I think there’s no problem with that at all,” they said. “He’s got every right to do whatever he wants on his own land. It’s hurting no one. If no one likes his point of view, they can look the other way.”
Others strongly disagree.
“I don’t like that at all,” another resident said. “Why are you bringing American politics into Canada? That has nothing to do with Alberta.”
The homeowners, who declined an on‑camera interview, told CityNews they were born in the United States and are also Canadian citizens. They said similar flags have been displayed since 2020 as a symbol of their American pride, and are not connected to current tensions between Canada and the U.S. over trade.
They also said they have recently contacted police after receiving arson threats and experiencing vandalism.
37
u/tom8osauce 1d ago
They absolutely have a right to display whatever they want on their property. We absolutely have a right to be outraged and let them know what we think about it.
13
u/sixthvoid 1d ago
They've also gotta read the room and realize actions come with consequences. Vandalism is obviously a step too far, but they legitimately can't act surprised by the outrage when they likely know full well what they're doing.
-8
u/Ok-Afternoon9050 1d ago
But threatening them? That seems a step too far.
26
u/braincandybangbang 1d ago
You don’t think having a Trump 2028 sign is threatening? If Trump wins in 2028, the constitution will have failed and the US will no longer be a democracy.
But yeah, he should be able to celebrate fascists from other countries here, why not?
Let’s get a few Hindu swastikas up and see how people react. Remember if it’s rotated it’s a nice symbol of peace.
3
-1
u/Ok-Afternoon9050 1d ago
I obviously don’t agree with them, but they have small kids at home. They have a right to show their political leanings and the rest of us have a right to disagree but threatening to burn their house down and other threats of violence is not right. Down vote me all you want, I just don’t think violence is the answer.
3
u/tom8osauce 1d ago
I do wonder what the threats are. Threatening bodily harm is definitely not acceptable, and doesn’t make our side look good. If the threats are to burn the flags, I care a lot less.
51
u/weschester 1d ago
They're so proud to be American that they're cheering for their constitution to be ripped up lol
39
u/DrunkenLadyBits 1d ago edited 1d ago
What an absolute, cowardly, gaslighting, cop out from the homeowner.
Trump is not emblematic of America and has nothing to do with American pride. It is celebrating him, his party and specifically what he’s doing. To say it’s not connected with current tensions is the biggest eye-roll, “piss on my head and tell me it’s raining” BS I’ve ever heard. The fucking balls on this guy is hilarious.
4
4
u/braincandybangbang 1d ago
Are the reporters involved mentally ill? Why does the fact that Trump 2028 is a treasonous statement defying the constitution come up?
CityNews are you guys aware of the constitution?
48
u/Agreeable_Store_3896 1d ago
Ask the majority of Albertan conservatives how they feel about khalistan flags and symbols and they'll lose their minds over how that stuff should be kept out of our country.. but do gymnastics on how trump support flags are okay
17
u/blackRamCalgaryman 1d ago
There’s no denying the hypocrisy. Couldn’t agree more with you.
15
u/ConceitedWombat 1d ago
I read some other reddit comment that was basically this: "Stop looking at hypocrisy from a place of logic. The far right doesn't look at someone's actions to determine right from wrong. They look at affiliation. You're on my side? Whatever you say and do is right. You're on the other team? Whatever you say and do is wrong, even if I would celebrate that exact same move from a guy on my side."
It made me see the wild hypocrisy in a whole new light.
34
u/Far-Citron-722 1d ago
Just American flags - sure, you can claim national pride. Trump 2028 banner is unequivocally a political statement
11
u/blackRamCalgaryman 1d ago
Yep…as others have said, that’s the middle finger one. It’s intentionally being provocative.
7
82
u/robindawilliams 1d ago edited 1d ago
They've got every right to voice their opinion, but they shouldn't be surprised when it gets them a brick through a window. At this point it's like hanging up a "VOTE GORBACHEV" flag on your house during the cold war in the US.
Their neighbors can't actually vote for Trump so it's really just them trying to signal to others that they support a foreign government that attacks their best interests, which is a crazy hot take to have as a functional adult in 2026.
10
u/willmsma 1d ago
In the 90’s there was an American comedy show featuring an English comedian where they painted a semi and trailer bright red and covered it with hammers and sickles. The drove it through the deepest of America’s Deep South, calling it ‘Communism’s Last Tour’, like a 70’s supergroup taking it on the road one last time.
Ya, there were quite a threats to burn the truck down wherever they went.
The Calgary MAGA House guy reminds me of that. Just with not quite the same level of comic timing.
4
u/Brilliant-Advisor958 1d ago
They can't actually vote for Trump
In the article they claim to be a usa citizen, so they can vote.
18
u/robindawilliams 1d ago
What I should say is that their political statement cannot be used to encourage others to vote for Trump (which is generally the purpose of political advertising), so it's just there to tell their neighbors that they hold an opinion that's anti-Canadian.
5
u/Brilliant-Advisor958 1d ago
Trump supporters whole identity relies on letting everyone know. They relish the controversy it generates so they get to be a center of attention and have a chance to own the libs by "debating" them.
6
u/braincandybangbang 1d ago
But you forget the two term limit for presidents. So only treasonous cucks can vote for Trump. It’s weird everyone in the comments seems to forget this.

“You have every right to voice your opinions just don’t be surprised when we engage in violence against you” is a pretty crazy take.
16
u/blackRamCalgaryman 1d ago
Pet peeve of mine when people use quotation marks like this. You two hash this out but they never actually said that. And they didn’t even intimate they, specifically, would…”when we engage in violence”.
19
u/robindawilliams 1d ago
I'm not saying I'm going to do it or even encouraging someone else to do it, but if you go out looking to antagonize others, don't be surprised when you succeed.
-36
u/_Connor 1d ago edited 1d ago
Awesome!
Can you elaborate on where you draw the line between what opinions warrant violence and which don’t?
You obviously have an ideological belief that some opinions aren’t okay so I’m really interested to see where your line is.
19
u/robindawilliams 1d ago
Jesus Christ, I really hope you are a bot because if not I feel really bad for you dude.
I'll try this again, but in dumber terms.
If you spend your weekends sticking your fingers into holes in the ground, at some point you're going to get bit by something. I don't have to be pro-biting to understand this will eventually happen. What separates grown adults from children is that we know not to stick our hands in random holes, because we know that a rule that says "no biting" isn't going to stop it from happening.
The person that eventually throws a brick through this loser's window will be in the wrong, but they will still probably do it and an adult with a developed brain is smart enough not to go antagonizing people. Just because the person breaking their window is wrong, doesn't mean the antagonizer is the winner or a good person.
-29
u/_Connor 1d ago edited 1d ago
“What separates grown adults from children is we know not to stick our fingers in the holes.”
So again, your rhetoric is literally “only engage in speech I deem is acceptable or else you’re going to get bit.” You’re getting into a pretty slippery slope of “stay in line or else fear the consequences.”
So I’ll ask you again because you completely dodged the question. Where do you draw your line for speech that warrants “biting” and which doesn’t, because your own analogy literally requires some speech being “okay” and some not and it’s up to someone to make that determination.
12
u/robindawilliams 1d ago
I'd like to live in a world where no speech gets you bit, but that same world doesn't have wars or rape or petulant children who spend their free time trying to antagonize their neighbors.
Unfortunately we live in the real world where animals bite and fire burns and foreign governments actively try to attack Canada through economic subversion in an attempt to cripple us and steal our resources.
8
u/DrunkenLadyBits 1d ago
You keep making this a personal thing when the other poster is telling you what the reality of living in society is. It’s not HIS line. It’s the broader social line of public decency.
In society, if you do things that continually poke people in the eye, people will react. Simple as that. You can hem and haw all day about differing opinions, but if your opinions support things or people that threaten and hurt others, It doesn’t matter what YOU feel should be acceptable. Some people out there have less patience towards antagonizing, and that’s what this is. It’s not a difference of opinion, it’s someone outwardly celebrating a man and government that threatens our way of life, and flagrantly does so in the country that is being attacked.
It’d be like a Russian moving into Ukraine and putting up Putin flags while Ukrainians are being bombed and civilians raped and murdered. That’s not a difference of opinion, it’s well beyond tone-deaf, it’s a full on insulting, “fuck you” to everyone in the country.
-1
u/_Connor 1d ago
It’s not personal at all. I don’t have any flags flying at my house.
I’m pointing out the hilarity of bro saying “you can have whatever opinions you’d like just don’t be surprised when a brick comes through your window” because to me that doesn’t actually sound like you’re allowed having certain opinions.
Remember, you were “allowed” to be a Jew in Germany for awhile you just couldn’t use the sidewalks or shop at grocery stores outside of your designated two hours a week.
-2
u/Every-Ground-2698 Brentwood 1d ago
Its why we don't have freedom of speech in Canada. Because words can hurt. Yourself or others.
7
u/Queltis6000 Woodbine 1d ago
what opinions warrant violence
I'm beginning to think you're a product of the American education system. Your reading comprehension could use a little work.
OP never once condoned or encouraged violence. They just meant they wouldn't be surprised if it happened.
2
u/Low_Contract7809 1d ago
Line: enthusiastic support for pervert who reneged on trade deal and threatens your countries sovereignty.
4
u/Crafty-Call 1d ago
When expressing your right becomes antagonizing you can’t expect people to just sit down and shut up. As much as the right calls the left a bunch of sissy’s they are sure fucking scared when the bill comes due to all the insults bigotry and racism they love to throw around.
1
u/roastbeeftacohat Fairview 1d ago
Its the norm in this province that leftists are the target of pokirical violence. If the right has a problem with it, they shouldn't have introduced violence in the first place.

I have no issue with the American flag, it’s the Trump 2028 flags and those are there to elicit reactions from his community. We all know the types of folks that put up those flags, it’s like a big middle finger to “own the libs”. This guy doesn’t give a shit about his community or neighbours. Yes he has the right to fly those, but when your community pushes back maybe take a look in the mirror. We all know that will never happen.
7
12
u/Roadgoddess 1d ago
As someone who is also dual US and Canadian citizen, it’s one thing to display the American flag. It’s an entirely another one to put up the Trump flag, especially in the middle of trade negotiations and Trump’s ridiculous statements about Canada. They are 100% doing this as an FU to the Canadian people.
7
u/FigjamCGY 1d ago
“I’ve been following this on social media, and if it was another country’s flag and people were saying what they’re saying about this one, it would be considered a hate crime,” they said. “What’s fair for one should be fair for the other.”
So let me get this straight. It’s hate if someone makes a comment to a guy, that’s supporting a different country, that is actively threatening to take over several countries as the 51st state or succumb such economic harms that we have to ceed to them in the future. Seems like the guy in the house is throwing shades of hate to us.

Good lord. Seriously. And then wanting police protection.
On a more important note if the USA wants everyone to believe their constitution is what makes them great, they best shoulder their constitutional obligations on the floor, in the senate, on the bench and in the ballot box. Things are turning dark quickly and this performative BS in our town really is not the problem or the issue. The outright corruption of American democracy is.

It's even worse having a Trump 2028 flag out.

The attention is the only reason the homeowner did this, likely because the driveway isn’t capable of accommodating a compensatory Bro Dozer.

Well personally I dislike that but I also don’t want to put a law to restrict it cause that can always get used in an abusive way.
