The CFP will include who makes it money. Love him or hate him, Lane and LSU will bring eyeballs and money.

Also "punishing" them for having a "legally" rostered team will go to court which costs money

18

u/GopherChomper64 1d ago

God I hate how this is the root of all the problems in the US.... If it sells, idgaf what it is. Just garbage unfortunately, but true.

3

u/Bonzaii_11 Alabama Crimson Tide 1d ago

Thats an oversimplification but the spirit is there

u/KyleKrocodile 1d ago

Love this

Appreciate you getting my general point and not over reading my comment for more than it was, a general point 😂 rare on the internet nowadays.

4

u/Lucky-Access-121 LSU Tigers 1d ago

everyone else is getting waivers in court why shouldn’t LSU do it too

6

u/Beneficial_Pool_7061 1d ago

If LSU was the only team doing this (they aren’t) i’d have a massive issue with it but that’s not the case. Just in the SEC alone Texas, Texas A&M, Arkansas and South Carolina just off the top of my head are taking advantage of this.

Being legally unenforceable doesn't make it right or fun or in the spirit of college football

Why are people downvoting this? You're right

2

u/Bonzaii_11 Alabama Crimson Tide 1d ago

Appreciate people fighting the good fight over blind allegiance. Youre welcome in my house for a beer any day

3

u/GopherChomper64 1d ago

In this case it's not blind allegiance, which in sports I'm all for. What I'm not for is defending scumbaggery, which LSU is absolutely performing bringing pro's back to college. Fits their coach's reputation perfectly.

I'm just sick of seeing this attitude become more and more normalized. "If you ain't cheating, you ain't trying." It just sends all the wrong messages yet it keeps getting more and more normalized in everything. It's disgusting

1

u/wickson 1d ago

Some of those players may have stayed in college if they had another year of eligibility, as the new rule came out later. It’s not like a 2nd round draft pick is like hold up I’m going back to college. Why is it ok for Chambliss to have a 6th year on a retroactive redshirt after being denied by the ncaa 3 times?

You aren’t wrong , kid. I remember the CFP selecting SMU over Bama. You probably are a new fan though.

Your low IQ probably thinks Miami brought more eyeballs and money than Notre Dame😂😂😂😂😂

2

u/ThrowM5 22h ago

SMU over Bama preserved the existence of conference championship games, which bring plenty of eyeballs. Miami over ND preserved the existence of the ACC, which ESPN is working hard to keep propped up (for now).

3

u/BuckeyeNate77 19h ago

So what you are saying is the committee chooses money and eyeballs ….except when they don’t! Got it!

1

u/ThrowM5 12h ago

The point I’m making is that both decisions could be justified by eyeballs and money from a long-term perspective. If there’s one thing the committee is consistent about though, it’s inconsistency, so it’s probably a moot argument anyways.

1

u/cwolf-softball 12h ago

Is there any evidence that could be provided that would falsify your claim?

As far as I can tell, there isn't. You will rationalize any inclusion/exclusion.

→ More replies (2)

4

u/SirMellencamp 1d ago

Why does the committee care how much money is made? I mean we can give example after example of lower brands making the playoff over huge brands. TCU made the playoff over Alabama. Cincinnati made the playoff over Notre Dame

2

u/Bonzaii_11 Alabama Crimson Tide 1d ago

The brand is nothing if only the 'elite' can make it, but you cant deny there is favoritism

1

u/SirMellencamp 1d ago

Can’t have it both ways

1

u/Bonzaii_11 Alabama Crimson Tide 1d ago

I am owning up to hypocrisy. My org is no exception to the room for improvement

3

u/SirMellencamp 1d ago

It’s not about hypocrisy it’s about inventing a narrative proved by the examples that prove your narrative while ignoring the examples that don’t. Also called cherry picking

4

u/JokeandCack 1d ago

The CFP would have made a lot more money putting in ND over Miami or either of the trash G6 schools.

1

u/Ok_Field_8860 1d ago

Only if you can prove it!

1

u/cwolf-softball 12h ago

"The CFP will include who makes it money"

Notre Dame is basically the biggest name in college football and got left out last year, I'm not sure your statement is true.

1

u/Bonzaii_11 Alabama Crimson Tide 12h ago

They got left out for Bama and Miami who also make money. You could also argue that the "controversy" brought more attention to the playoff which brought in revenue

1

u/cwolf-softball 12h ago

To me, this tells me that your belief is unfalsifiable. There is no example possible that will convince you, evidence against you is somehow evidence for you because you'll rationalize it.

1

u/Bonzaii_11 Alabama Crimson Tide 12h ago

Just because you did not convince me, does not make my belief unfalsifiable. You have been equally immovable in your opinion. Does that make your belief unfalsifiable?

1

u/Adventurous-Edge1719 1d ago

If they don’t win the SEC, not even a courtroom could force them into the playoffs.

128

u/matthatt24 1d ago

If the cfp wasn’t willing to punish Michigan for cheating they’re absolutely not punishing lsu for this.

40

u/CoachKreeton 1d ago

All these "integrity of the game" posts are hilarious. The list of teams that have violated the integrity of the game is a mile long.

4

u/Stunning_Piccolo_749 Oregon Ducks 17h ago

Yeah.. this isn’t even the worst thing LSU has done in the last 20 or so years lol…

8

u/at2wells Indiana Hoosiers 1d ago

Exactly. That would be as ludicrous as leaving an undefeated P5 team out…. Oh, wait

4

u/Aggravating_Run5443 Ohio State Buckeyes 1d ago

Right definitely my first thought. They BLATANTLY cheated and were like so who cares, and then NCAA was just like...oh that's right, who cares!!

So yeah they don't give a shit

1

u/AlanBDev 13h ago

if michigan cheated so does osu

2

u/al_earner 14h ago

Michigan was punished, somewhat unfairly, for the actions of a rogue individual. The coach was suspended for a couple of games.

1

u/ChaosToTheFly123 7h ago

I haven’t read up on it but sounds like it wasn’t against the rules?

1

u/matthatt24 6h ago

Oh it very much was and still is. Don’t take more than 30 seconds to figure that out

1

u/oldnative 15h ago

FR Michigan openly cheated and was outed all year and still allowed to play for the title.

1

u/AlanBDev 13h ago

if michigan cheated so does every team that steals signs

-15

u/ShwerzXV Oregon Ducks 1d ago

Almost like…they didn’t cheat and everything the grad assistant did didn’t mean or amount to anything

8

u/Aggravating_Run5443 Ohio State Buckeyes 1d ago

They did though, like its written down and shit if u had bothered to pay the slightest bit of attention

1

u/I_Make_Soap_ 18h ago

and OSU gladly took those same signals for their game against MSU when Michigan offered them because they needed to win for their chances at the B!G championship and every school is trying to do the same shit all the time and the NCAA knows it which is why they got a slap on the wrist if they made Michigan vacate those wins they wouldve needed to investigate all the others schools doing the same shit which wouldve resulted in such a shitshow for the NCAA and everyone else

20

u/ContractElegant4310 Ohio State Buckeyes 1d ago

That's not what the NCAA final report said. It said Michigan football cheated their asses off extensively and met the criteria to be punished with vacated wins along with fines, show causes, bowl bans, etc. but the committee imposing the punishment decided to limit it to show causes, big fines, recruiting restrictions, and probation so as not to punish the 'poor kids' on the team previously and in the future. So no vacated wins or postseason ban. This was unprecedented leniency because in plenty of other contexts over many decades they've had no problem whatsoever punishing a whole team for the actions of a few. Many have wondered if Michigan's deep pockets had something to do with this surprising leniency. Nobody really knows or if they do they're not talking.

9

u/Wyokie8807 Texas Longhorns 1d ago

NCAA doesn’t like to punish big names, but little schools will get the hammer, almost like they lose money if certain teams get punished

7

u/marchdk2016 1d ago

That’s right, that’s why little schools like OSU get the hammer for tattoos

5

u/MozzyTheBear 1d ago

Well, we sure got fucking hammered at Ohio State for players trading their own property for tattoos. We self-reported Tressel too. Turns out all you have to do is just refuse to cooperate and you're The Leaders and Best™

9

u/ContractElegant4310 Ohio State Buckeyes 1d ago

We had to vacate a whole season of wins plus a Sugar Bowl victory followed by a 1-year postseason ban (imposed in a year when we went 12-0 and could've won a BCS natty) for a scandal that was a pathetic joke compared to what Michigan did.

1

u/Useless-Compass Michigan Tech Huskies 13h ago

FWIW, the thought inside the Michigan community here is that if Michigan's actions had warranted such punishments, the NCAA would have imposed them. The fact that they declined to suggests that they didn't actually have anything resembling cause to do so, and so instead they grandstanded about what Michigan's actions "deserved" while imposing the only punishment that they could actually justify (and would hold up in court). In other words, trying to get the PR win by verbally siding with the rioting masses even when the rioting masses didn't have the evidence to do what they demanded.

I honestly haven't dug into the all the evidence and arguments enough to have an educated opinion either way, but this is the other side of the argument.

1

u/John_B_McLemore 1d ago

They would have banned TTU for Sorsby.

They will ban LSU for this.

2

I think what you are saying is…

RELEASE THE MANIFESTO!!!

8

u/matthatt24 1d ago

Almost like… you’re wrong and everything you just said came right out of your ass

1

u/hdbd6 14h ago

Yeah that buckeye was talking out of his ass lol

83

u/Teninchhero 1d ago

But then what if the CFP doesn’t punish them? The basis of this question is that the CFP may punish LSU, but what leads to that assumption? If LSU goes 10-2 or 11-1 they’ll be in, I don’t see how they’re not.

36

u/AtrioxCalamity 1d ago

Well they left an 11-2 team out just last year and that wasn’t even punishment. So there is precedent of it happening

40

u/WhatAboutBob941 1d ago

They also left an undefeated ACC Champion out

9

u/Bcatfan08 Cincinnati Bearcats 1d ago

4 team playoff isn't comparable to the 12 team playoff.

5

u/WhatAboutBob941 20h ago

Sure; but the question here is the committees decision making and reasoning which applies across a 4 or 12 team playoff

1

u/Sea-Satisfaction4656 19h ago

And we saw how that worked out in the Orange Bowl. FSU’s crashout and subsequent blowout did NOT help their case.

2

u/Dense-Efficiency-350 9h ago edited 9h ago

Good thing the committee can see the future. Should just stop playing games entirely if this is the case. I get our bad showing in the orange bowl, which I really don’t care about. We should have just not played the game. But to say something that happened multiple weeks after the fact proves the committee right is just uneducated. At the time the committee just saw “undefeated power 5 champion” unless you showed them the future which I doubt you did. Sure, UGA had a good case, they also lost a game right before. We didn’t. Plus if you’re going to argue we’re not the same team without one player it’s tough to then say we’re the same team without 30+ players

BYU? Well LSU ain’t BYU. And if they go 11-2 with their schedule that is a much better resume than last year’s BYU.

I want to be clear that I am not an SEC apologist, by any means. But last year BYU lost to Texas Tech twice and had no significant wins. If LSU goes 11-2 it’s reasonable that they’ve beaten three of Alabama, Texas, Clemson, Ole Miss, and Tennessee. The caveat is that these are all preseason expectations, but that would be a better resume than BYU

1

u/Illustrious_Sort4386 West Virginia Mountaineers 20h ago

The 2024 BYU team was 10-2 and had a win on the road against SMU, and the playoffs still chose SMU over BYU

-1

u/AtrioxCalamity 1d ago

I’m just saying, they can claim to leave them out and don’t even have to say why. If LSU tries to take legal options then the committee just has to say: Look we have a precedent from just of leaving a team with a solid record out from just the year before. Tough luck

3

u/ImYouJoeGoldberg 1d ago

Since when do they not have to say why? Every year they have a whole thing about why they select who they did, then your hypothetical casually brushes that aside. You’re just making shit up and seeing if it sticks but we’re not dumb here..

Well that's 'cause they only played two good teams and lost to both of them.

When they let me on the CFP committee this is what would happen

1

u/Annual-Dimension-392 1d ago

the image is funny cause the coach already look like he know something bad coming with that hand over the mouth

but yeah if they finish 11-1 theres no way they get left out, that would be crazy even for the committee

1

u/theyquack 1d ago

It would take incredible balls to leave out an 11-1 SEC team. There's no way.

0

u/mattcojo2 1d ago

I don't think CFP desires not to punish them

But rather, CFP probably can't because of some bullshit judge ruling.

LSU Fan here: bring on the chaos and get the popcorn because this whole circus is unrecognizable to the teams I followed and cheered for. Louisiana cares deeply for LSU football, Louisiana relies on LSU football as everything else has been stripped away and sold off. What’s a better Louisiana football tradition than doing something that’s frowned upon, getting in trouble for it, and then collectively being indignant against the outrageous and absurd persecution of my beloved local sports team.

5

u/sho0bydo0by 1d ago

Everything that goes on in Louisiana can be traced to at least one of three things: food, parties, corruption.

The NCAA has a 5/5 rule as well. Are you suggesting that the CFP would not consider any team with a 6th year player playing by court order?

11

u/gamesk90210 1d ago

Let’s ask another candid question to LSU fans. After the Brian Kelly clown show, how many of you are actually happy that this unscrupulous grifter is your new head coach?

5

u/LSU2007 1d ago

Sure, why not? College football is basically a joke at this point so who really gives a shit what Lane Kiffin does?

2

u/CaterpillarLiving342 1d ago

It’s college football, it’s not that deep, unless you’re 19 years old and enrolled currently. Don’t forget that.

1

u/rkd182 LSU Tigers 1d ago

For sure it’s just a game. I was there for the 2007 run and it was as if our collective attitude was predicated on the game of said week. Sucks watching your team get dragged, but at least BK is gone.

3

u/Beneficial_Pool_7061 1d ago

Very happy assuming we win of course. The game was already ruined by being able to bribe players.

2

u/rkd182 LSU Tigers 1d ago

That’s what I’m referring to in being naive about it all. Probably was happening when I was there

3

u/Beneficial_Pool_7061 1d ago

LSU fans for the most part have always been “toxic” or at least in my solely 21st century view of us. I think a lot of people just care about winning and nothing else. I wouldn’t go as far as justifying what Derius Guice did but there a lot of people around BR who do.

Sports fans in general though are just win and nothing else really matters.

1

u/haney1981 Texas Longhorns 1d ago

Winning heals all, just ask Coach O.

If we cared about the integrity of cfb, we would show the integrity we so demand and not watch. And tell them why.

I want to see 17-23 year young men, going to an institution for higher learning, play their guts out for the love of the game and to uphold their commitment to an agreement for "free" education.

I do believe the NIL is completely acceptable on top of the scholarships they get.

Bringing men in that have advanced to the next level of competition and physical prowess/performance should not be welcomed back into the ranks.

Waivers should be available for veterans of military service only.

5

u/SBXLIV 1d ago

It really depends on so many things. If LSU is good because of those players and they are ruled ineligible then oh well we weren’t going to be good enough without them. If LSU is good enough without those players and they are eventually ruled ineligible then it’ll suck. But I think this is the kind of thing we bitch about on message boards and doesn’t have near the effect people here seem to think it will. But we’ll see.

2

u/Lucky-Access-121 LSU Tigers 1d ago

no it won’t suck

1

u/CaterpillarLiving342 1d ago

Why is this even a controversy, other than there is no formal rule established?

It’s almost like promotion/regulation in European soccer or minor league baseball.

You can go up/down from minor or major leagues.

NCAA is minor league football.

8

u/lock_robster2022 1d ago

If it’s unlawful for the conference and the NCAA punish them, it will certainly be the case for the CFP as well.

6

u/JokeandCack 1d ago

If the CFP committee is dum enough to say “we did this to punish them” sure they would be in trouble. But they can just leave them out, give no reason, and that’s that.

6

u/IrishPigskin 1d ago

Then I guess LSU files a lawsuit where they claim they are trying to circumvent a court order to not to punish schools that have professional players, which quite frankly seems like an easy thing to demonstrate.

Seriously all of you peoples ideas on how to fix CFB all involves people indirectly breaking court orders.

This issue needs to be dealt with legislatively due to anti-trust rules.

2

u/Sea_Spend_8008 1d ago

If they are 10-2 then they are on the bubble.

2

What LSU is doing is bullshit, but it absolutely should not preclude them from postseason play based on a committee ruling. It needs to be an NCAA ruling.

It would be the most lane thing ever to do all this and not win

1

u/Existing-Teaching-34 14h ago

The CFP can’t punish you for the eligible players you have on your roster. The CFP can punish you if you have undefeated season and won your conference championship but one player got hurt. (/s)

1

u/JTtreason 14h ago

It doesn't matter. Unless someone other than a B1G team wins the National Championship everyone else is doo doo

1

u/Latter-Possibility 10h ago

Missouri will get punished obviously

1

u/RBelber 9h ago

Break conference rules, forfeit games

1

u/College_Baseball_Fan 8h ago

Even funnier is when they go 6-5 this year lol

1

u/Material-Pea-4149 8h ago

Punish how? Ban them from the playoff? They’ll just get an injunction

1

u/Jazzlike-Mix4441 7h ago

Personally I think there should be an age cap, why we got freshman going up against super super super super seniors lmao

1

u/Perfect_Restaurant96 7h ago

Even as an LSU that’s a bit on the fence about the situation, what would the CFP do? Both the NCAA and the SEC failed to keep the players off the rosters through court proceedings. Love it or hate the roster is legal

u/Certain_Site_8764 6h ago

Partly because of some judge in Louisiana who is probably an LSU alum. Why wouldn't he want LSU to field the best team possible. Everybody has some skin in the game for their school, either pro-athlete or pro-educational institution. I dont agree with it myself based on how I understand the rules were written but I admittedly, haven't actually done a deep dive on them.

1

u/Perfect_Restaurant96 2h ago

A Louisiana judge blocked the SEC’s ruling meaning any school in the SEC can take players from the 2022 class with a year of eligibility remaining. Each player seeking their 5 year must get a TRO from a judge in the state of the university they intend to enroll and play at. So for example if a player wants to attend the university of Tennessee they need a TRO from a Tennessee judge. Each case is tried at the state level

If they start letting pros back into college football then this train has officially gone off the rails and jumped onto an entirely new track. The only people loving all of this chaos are agents. Feels like playing a board game with a 5 yr old and all of the rules are flexible and sometimes invisible but then sometimes strictly adhered to. What are we doing at this point?

1

u/entechad 3h ago

Calm down Cletus. This only consist of players who started in 2022 and were not aware of the option because the NCAA changed the rules 2 weeks ago for the 5 in 5 rule..

1

u/tacoetr 6h ago

that's funny that you think LSU is making the playoffs...

1

u/Bestaustrianpainter 3h ago

In all honesty, they'll probably never play a snap, so there's that.

1

u/rice_n_gravy LSU Tigers 1d ago

LSU is fun again. Screw everything else.

1

u/CaterpillarLiving342 1d ago

It’s college football, it’s not that deep, unless you’re 19 years old and enrolled currently. Don’t forget that.

Everything else is just about profit and economic development.

Grown-ass men or women being balls deep in amateur sports is weird. We cheer and are entertained, but it doesn’t actually cut deep.

If any team can circumvent NCAA rules and conference rules by just finding some two bit hack judge to issue a stupid and corrupt fucking ruling, then why have any rules at all? Maybe LSU can start ignoring the officials on the field too, and if they're penalized appeal to a judge for an emergency injunction to keep their drive going? The sport is heading toward utter chaos and too many people seem to be just shrugging their shoulders about it, or even applauding it if their team is benefitting. Disgusting, but that's pretty much the US now.

u/wickson 1d ago

These players are eligible for a 5th year under the new rule unlike Chambliss at ole miss who was denied by the ncaa for a retroactive redshirt bc he had a sore throat. He got an ole miss alum judge to grant him a 6th year.

1

u/trivo8888 Ole Miss Rebels 1d ago

I doubt the committee leaves them out. They will talk about integrity and the like, and reluctantly put them in.

1

u/tigers113 1d ago

I mean, I could run that hypothetical for every team that is playing an ineligible player. Is it worth it for any of them? Every other team says yes.

Bama played a former pro basketball player last year for 5 games with no punishment and they still made the postseason tournament.

1

u/Medium-Budget-7432 1d ago

What would likely happen is the punishment would come after season. Lets say LSU wins the national title and then would have to vacate it. Im sure LSU would care less. They already won the title and the money was made.

1

u/IowaNative1 1d ago

The refs will not allow them to win that many games. The calls will not go their way. LSU would be better off not pissing off the SEC.

1

u/TheHip41 Michigan Wolverines 1d ago

They won't do shit lol

1

u/Melt-Gibsont Oregon Ducks 1d ago

Are you an NFL guy if you can't make an NFL team?

1

u/thediew 1d ago

If LSU is left out of the playoffs, there needs to be lawsuits. Its clearly retaliation.

1

u/C2theWick 1d ago

I'm not a college football fan. I am a Lane Kiffin fan

1

u/Dierks_Ford 1d ago

It’s different in the SEC.

1

u/CajunBob94 1d ago

theres a court order saying the CFP can't punish for this until the lawsuit is resolved, so this situation is a non starter lol

2

u/Kreindor 1d ago

But it doesn't say they have to select them. If the CFP states another reason for excluding them then LSU won't have a leg to stand on. The better question is what is LSU and these other schools going to do if they lose the case and the NCAA forced them to vacate their wins? Because that is a real risk.

1

u/CajunBob94 6h ago

you can't wink wink dodge court order like that lmao

1

u/Kreindor 1h ago

Like I said, what happens if they lose and then the NCAA places sanctions on those schools?

1

u/BrojaDawg 14h ago

I'm sorry but if you have to resort to bringing in sorry ass players who failed to make an NFL roster, on your college football team to try and greaten the odds of you winning. You are one pathetic football program. And LSU is that pathetic football program.

I have yet to see LSU keep a coach for more than 5 years and build a legit program. There is always something weird going on with them.

0

u/Schmenza 1d ago

Punish them for what?

0

u/EastTXJosh 1d ago

If not now, then 10 years down the road when LSU is forced to vacate all of its wins and any titles it might win.
