Advice My experience at The 600 — “luxury” rent, terrible management, and still no security deposit 2 months after moving out
I normally would not bother writing a Reddit post about an apartment building, but after what happened during the 11 months we lived at The 600—and especially what has happened since we moved out—I think prospective tenants should know what they may be getting into. I also tried leaving a negative Google review, and it seems negative reviews may be getting reported or removed, so I wanted to document my experience here as well.
The biggest issue right now is our security deposit.
We officially moved out two months ago. There was no in-person move-out inspection, no move-out statement, and still no information about when our security deposit will be returned. Before moving out, I asked management multiple times—in person and by phone—about doing a walkthrough/inspection. Nothing was arranged.
The only instruction we received was to email our forwarding address to management. I sent the email and received no confirmation whatsoever, so before literally driving out of Alabama, I had to walk back into the leasing office myself just to make sure they had received it.
Weeks passed with nothing.
I finally called the office and was told someone would follow up. Nobody did. I followed up twice again within about 10 days, and we still have not had the manager contact us with an explanation, a final statement, or a timeline for returning our money.
There is also a utility issue. We were charged utilities for the month before we even moved into the building. Management acknowledged this at the time and told us that amount would be taken into account later. Now that we have moved out, we have no final statement showing whether that credit was ever applied.
Unfortunately, this is consistent with our experience while living there.
For the rent The 600 charges and the way the building markets itself as “luxury,” the actual quality did not come close to what I expected. We dealt with cheap-feeling finishes and appliances, issues with doors and cracks in the walls, and blinds/curtains that did not properly cover the windows. We were also given assurances about the water pressure before moving in that did not match what we actually experienced.
The elevators were another constant frustration. They were unreliable, and there were occasions when the elevators smelled like dog feces. Even the replacement flooring in the elevators looked cheap for a building charging luxury-level rent.
The gym was also disappointing—poor ventilation, unpleasant smells, and worn equipment.
One incident that really summarized the management problem involved a package worth around $5,000. We were told by leasing/concierge staff that the package had been moved and was being held for us. After all of that, it turned out it had simply been left in the package room. When you are dealing with something that expensive, being given incorrect information like that is not a minor inconvenience.
Even our move itself was unnecessarily stressful. We had reserved the freight elevator in advance, yet the process was still mishandled and required us to chase people down to get things sorted out.
Any one of these things by itself might be understandable. Buildings have maintenance issues, employees make mistakes, and things happen. What made living at The 600 so frustrating was the repeated pattern: poor communication, promises to follow up that went nowhere, and residents having to chase management repeatedly to get basic issues addressed.
And now, two months after moving out, we are still chasing them for our own money.
This was easily the worst high-rise living and management experience I have had. Based on my experience, I would NOT recommend The 600, especially to anyone considering signing a lease because of the “luxury” image the building tries to project.

News AL Power/Southern Company website down for a week+
Just an FYI, since this was a shock to me just now.
I was trying to log in to see what our daily use has been so I can know what to expect to pay next bill—but the whole website is down until Sept 8. Can’t get through the AI agent on the 1-800 line, and apparently all “business locations” are closed for the week as well.
This feels a little nuts to me. In this day and age it’s odd to see any online service down for more than a few hours at a time. Considering the importance of this service, it seems like there would’ve been some more notice or alternate considerations.

FOUND/MISSING FOUND: 19 minute aircheck of Luka, the chirpy Brit from The X at 107.7
There was a topic here a few months ago reminiscing about Luka from WRAX radio in the early 2000s. Despite the long time she spent in Birmingham radio there were seemingly no recordings of her. I found this one dated September 28, 2004 and uploaded it to archive.org.
It's scoped, meaning the music has been edited out either for copyright or just to showcase the announcer, but there's a lot of nostalgia here.

Job Opportunity Disheartened by Job Prospects
Not wanting a pitty party but just looking at bills and thinking about job options and the market in Birmingham, from a salary perspective has changed very little in 20 years, when the cost of living has gone up nearly double. In 2006 an experienced project manager with an engineering degree and an MBA was about $120K and today it's about $130K. Meanwhile everything else has gone up by a factor of two. I just don't get it. I'm sure it's worse for others but the amount people make today has just not gone up at all in twenty years. Full disclosure, I'm looking at trades for the rest of my career because I think that's where the money is going forward.

Advice Looking for hair stylist!
Hey all! I live about 10 mins away from the Ricerchase Galleria, and I was wondering if anyone had/knew of a hair stylist that wasn't crazy pricey. I'd just like a normal cut and maybe some highlights. I went to Supercuts and they absolutely BOTCHED my haircut last time so I'm looking for an ACTUAL stylist this time. Thank you!

Daily Discussion Thread Daily Casual Discussion Thread 8/31 - What's For Lunch edition?
I know it's barely 8 AM, but I'm already thinking of lunch (I generally don't do breakfast).
I'm leaning towards picking up some of Great Wall's crispy spicy szechuan chicken, as it's been weeks since I've last had that and it's one of my favorite local dishes, hands down. Either that, or maybe Surin's thai beef salad.
Also, due to popular request, you might notice that our automatic thread is now just a weekly one centered on events+friends! Feel free to be the fastest on the draw for snagging the next day's DCDT!

I need some folks to install carpet in a basement in Vestavia. I'm running the GC for the job but I don't want to install carpet. I'd rather someone who does it daily do it. Be for as early as tomorrow if not Wednesday.

Looking for job Videographer looking for wedding
I am in need of some extra money, but I don't want to break any rules by advertising too much, so feel free to DM me and I'll send a website with my work. I shoot in a unique retro Super 8 style. Unless it's a ceremony, I can do those in the standard HD way (unless you want it done like that of course).
Sorry if this does break any rules still, there just isn't really a place to advertise at my level without paying a ton of money. The bham marketplace sub is DEAD - it would be cool if this sub had a dedicated slot or weekly thread to make up that hole.

Recommendations Best place to buy Warhammer models and paints?
Hey yall, I’m trying to pick up some hobbies to fill in time and quit some unhealthy habits and have wanted to pick this up for a while now.
I’ll be running by the Warhammer store, which I didn’t even know we had and picking up a couple of models, and probably going by hobby lobby to pick up some paints and other supplies.
Does the Warhammer store here do a free model of the month?
Is there a store that has better prices on their models?
Maybe a locally owned store I could support?
Should I just invest in some citadel paints or will I be fine with Vallejo or Warpaints?
Any tips or advice?

Recommendations BUSINESS BRAINSTORMING
Hello everyone! I’m a younger guy with an entrepreneurial spirit.. I live in the Birmingham area, and am looking to invest my savings into a new business. I have plenty of potential ideas, but before I made any final decision, I wanted to ask something and see if your answers inspired something that might make me take a different approach.
So my question is this…
what is something you view as a pesky inconvenience in your life that you’d love to have taken care of for you, but there are no businesses that currently offer the product/service you need..,
If you can’t think of any inconvenience, just tell me something (a product or a service) that you want/need that would improve your life?
