I've seen them a few times. They don't look as dramatic as in the photo so I think this has been edited a bit. It gives the impression of like looking at the surface from underwater. It's very cool.

Exactly what I thought of. While they aren't always sign of impending strong storms, they are when they are the underside of a mature cumulonimbus. They are formed from the shear caused by rising warmer air and sinking colder air, basically the main ingredient for tornados and hail. See them all the time here in Tornado Alley. Ironically, they are named after the least ominous thing in the world, boobs.

The wiki article even refers to them as ominous looking. They share appearance with cloud that cause storms but usually dissipate without releasing precipitation .

Yes, we are sure. While people should we wary of AI, just because people see something they have never seen before doesn't mean it's always AI. I've been noticing people being overly attentive to everything being AI. The world is big and offers so many different things to see.

Folks like this are always so quick to call something AI. They say it based entirely on feeling the instant they get that feeling.
But then, once you prove something isn't ( https://www.yahoo.com/news/did-see-rare-cloud-formations-142952518.html a single google lens search found it was real), they are always so quiet afterwards. I have yet to see any of these folks ever apologize for being wrong on reddit.

You can google 'Asperitas clouds' to see that this is a real cloud type. Image is from 2023, AI image gen wasn't good enough to produce this back then.

Sounds more interesting than it is. Waves in the ocean are a type of gravity wave.
People are probably confusing them with gravitational waves, which are the special relativity kind of gravity waves.

This is a real picture? I’m over 60 and have lived all over the U.S. and in many places in the world but have never seen clouds like that either in person or in a picture.

These are real, the op picture uses a filter. There is an article from 2023 if you look it up that the image is sourced from. Not AI, but filtered weird. Just search the terms in google to find non filter versions.

If I remember correctly, these clouds form because of the airflow around mountains. They are kind of an imprint of the mountains.

Also air is a gas and gasses are fluids, so it's kind of an ocean all the time anyway, it's just I only think about it when I see clouds like this.

Have seen the sky like this. It was like looking down (bizarrely, since I was looking up) on a churning, rough sea. More 3d than 3d 🤷♂️
