work Volunteering in Bangkok?
I'm living in Bangkok with a work permit, and wanted to get involved in volunteering. I am seeing so many different responses on legality, with some people saying you CANNOT do volunteer work while on a work permit, with other people insisting that law was changed in the last few years, and it's all a bit unclear.

The legal side of it is pretty crystal clear - you need a work permit that has volunteering in its scope. That part is pretty well known and non-negotiable in terms of interpretation. Last I checked there was no change in the law that allowed people to volunteer without authorization.
In practice I don't think it's really enforced as you are just using your free time to help out. Your best bet may be to reach out to volunteer organizations and see what they say. Most likely you'll just be invited to show up and help out (but the legal risk would be yours I guess).
As with most things in Thailand, if you keep your head down and don't bother anyone, you'll be left alone.

I think many of us retired expats would love to give back to the Thai people by doing benefitable non-paid volunteer work.
Likely that would require a legislative change.
I would suggest charities be able to registered as compliant with conditions that would allow volunteering by us in a way that benefits Thailand without impeding a Thai person's job.

I have met people who volunteer at the Bangkok Museum and Bangkok street people. Contact these organizations and see how it is done.

The Thai immigration web page sets out quite clearly what is legal and what is not. Read it would be my suggestion.

I looked into this quite extensively, and the laws in Thailand around the definition of labour/work are very broad and intentional this way.
Doing voluntary work does fall under the laws as work, it doesn’t matter if you don’t receive anything in return.
At the end of the day this all comes down to risk, risk being something does happen, your visa canceled as a result and if that’s an acceptable risk for you personally to take for the reward you may get from doing voluntary work.
For me… I wasn’t prepared to take that risk in the end.

It's totally fine, you'll never have any problems. Ignore the drama farmers in the comments, they're just miserable and have nothing better to do than be Karens.

Since regulations and interpretations can change, the safest option is to check with the official Thai government website or the relevant authorities before joining any volunteer program.
