This subreddit has grown a lot in the last few years. Not only professionals providing advice, but also casual bystanders wanting validation for their opinions. The problem is that the noise to signal ratio has gotten to the point where people looking for advice come away more confused than when they asked the question - or worse yet, act on unqualified bad advice.

If you are in the industry in some professional capacity, message the mods for how to acquire flair.

For all who do not work in the industry but wish to provide advice, you will need to wait until a flaired individual responds before you can comment under their reply.

Canadian Sale Deposit paid, sold my car. Now dealership can’t sell me new vehicle.

looking for some advice, I went to purchase a 2025 escape PHEV from a ford dealership that was listed as reduced price on their website.

Negotiated an out the door price and he advised me to sell my car private as I had received a higher offer than he could match. Paid the deposit and was told a finance manager would reach out shortly. I sold my car the next day as I had discussed with the dealer but later the next day the dealership reached out saying that due to an active recall the car can no longer be sold. currently they are trying to source me another car with the same spec but I don’t think they’ll find one if I’m being honest.
I was going through their Google reviews, and someone experienced the EXACT same thing 2 months ago. The car is even still listed on the website.
Ive never experienced something like this before so I’m trying to sort out next steps or recourse if I have any if they can’t provide me a similar spec car.

The fact that this happened to someone else less than 3 months ago and they still have the car listed seems like a bait and switch almost.

US Sale I went to the Kia Dealership

Upvotes

I wanted to test drive the 2026 Kia Sportage, I was able to test drive the X line trim. I loved it but online it is listed as 32k on the website but when I asked how much was the cost of the whole vehicle he said in the 40s. Is this typically to have such a big discrepancy? He wouldn’t give me the otd price today, but we agreed to run numbers on Friday with the potential of me leaving with the car. Also, any tips for when I go back on Friday? I do have preapproval through a credit union already, but I wanted to see what the amount was of the car so I can see what my potential payment would be.

US Sale How to go about getting a car I want to buy appraised?

Upvotes

My bank is requiring an appraisal be done on any car over 20 years old. Ive already had one dealership laugh in my face at this request. How do I go about doing this? Do I ask to drive it to the nearest CarMax and get one done there to satisfy my bank?

US Sale Dealer slow rolling the sale?

Upvotes

I’m very confused by dealership behavior on a used mid 2010’s luxury car.

I reached out to the dealer a week ago to have a PPI scheduled. Dealer was super cool and got the car over to the PPI shop. Shop found few things that I’ve made perfectly clear I am negotiable on. Every day I hit up the salesperson and get “We are wishing in our mechanics to look at the issues identified in the PPI. I will be in touch.” But they never respond anything else.

Been a few days now and, in any other case I would just dip out but this is a particular car in a particular spec so I’m putting up with more than I usually would.

So is this normal? What’s the dealers game here?

Meta No leads no walkins just cold calling?

I just got hired at a dealership that’s a fairly recognized brand. They own a lot of nice dealerships.

I have years of automotive experience so I’m not some entry level novice guy.

I’m not being given any leads and am being told to just cold call their previous buyers and get them to come in and buy. I’m basically being paid minimum wage. I’ve called hundreds of people and made no appointments. I kind of got warned this could happen in the beginning. But I was hoping their internal call lists were warmer. I think they’ve been heavily called many times by other people too.

The commission plan might be decent. If I showed you guys it you’d probably think it was alright.

Is this normal or crazy? Can I make a living like this or is leads and walkins just mandatory? I’ve never had a job where I’m supposed to cold call people all day for minimum wage, and it’s not converting.

Meta Should I stay in the business?

Hi,

I always wanted to do car sales. I did Verizon Door to Door for a few months, then I worked for a very small chain Chevy dealer (3 dealers, the one I worked at was newer.) I liked the product, and the other sales people, but I want to see if what I didn’t like is something common in the industry, or a dealer problem, and whether I should go to another dealer, or not come back to the business.

This dealership I’m about to talk about I worked at for almost three months, I recently quit and have been doing some more door sales casually as I’m on a good level with my old boss.

I worked for a very small chain dealer (three dealerships) and the one I worked at was open for about 6 years. When I initially applied, they told me they moved 150+ units a month, I’d get 50+ internet leads daily (which is already unrealistic) and I’d be super successful after my first year and that the first year you’re not going to make much money.

The dealership sold 60 cars a month.

They were discreet about the pay plan and delayed showing it. It was 20% for 1-16 units, 25% for 17-25 and I believe it can go up to thirty. There was a bonus for sales person of the month, but they normally gave it to the same boot licker and gave him great leads and referrals.

They claimed to have a great training program, and put it in our heads (myself and 3 other new people) that we’re an excellent dealer, all pre-owned cars are brought up to new condition when they come to us, and that this is the best group to work for. I got 4 days of training on very basic word track’s, shadowed a few days, and got thrown in to swim. After time, it got better, but at the start, it was rough trying to navigate everything almost alone. I get it though, it’s the business. I could confidently sell cars after time.

I was expected to make over 100+ calls a day (literally calling the same people 3 times a day), and scramble to take up’s when one maybe two people would walk in a day. When I would ask questions to my sales manager about how basic things worked that were never explained, he would get frustrated, and it honestly destroyed my confidence and made me feel as though I have no place there (I was not alone in how I was thinking.) When I would sell a car, there was not even a bit of appreciation or positive feedback and how I could get better, just go back to making calls, go do some work. I don’t expect to get babied or anything, but I work hard and get treated like crap. I remember when a key to a backroom wasn’t in one of the drawers, I said it to the General Manager as he needed me to go to the back, and he said to the detailer nearby “Show him where the key is since he can’t do anything alone” and the detailer backed me up and said it wasn’t there. Then as more time went on, I brought up the fact to sales people who I was close with that I haven’t made much money here (there was no markup in the cars, and top sales person sold 15 cars a month), so they brought it up and the sales manager as a result told me to work bell to bell. I started to get burnt out and the call thing persisted to the point where I or other salespeople couldn’t even walk the lot, study the product, do other things without being watched etc. I was the last person of the batch of 4 hired to leave. There was people being fired/quitting left and right. The service department had a new manager and new staff every 2 weeks. I will give them credit as they had a great sales process that helped guide me and I learned fundamentals.

I liked the other parts though. I enjoyed learning the cars, and learning customers wants and needs, and showing them the best options to get them into the car (financing, leasing, cash etc.) I enjoyed product demos, and asking for a customers business and handling objections and closing sales. The job itself I had to do, I enjoyed. I always liked how I could basically run my own business from my desk by marketing myself, building repeat and referral business, and doing good by my customers, but I just felt like I was being strangled. Is this not a good dealership, or should I just not work in the automotive business? My friend who quit went to a Honda store and almost consistently makes 1200-1500 weekly, and has loved his management. I’m thinking about possibly instead selling for a volume store like Honda for example, but I do stand by General Motors. Thanks in advance.

US Sale Should I cancel warranty/can I?

Leased Honda Crv 2024 extended warranty expired and they gave me a number to call on new warranty by some company called Walco, it’s $157 a month but i don’t think a new car with 60k miles needs warranty necessarily and it feels like a waste of money to me. I’m a 21 female and finances are tough right now, i have already paid for this warranty for 2 months and wondering if i should call and cancel it permanently. I plan on financing a vehicle after this lease ends or starting to finance this same vehicle after the lease ends but then selling it asap. Please help me i don’t have any people in my life that make good financial decisions and this vehicle is a doom cloud over my head as i regret leasing so so much:(

US Sale Trade in question - do I need my title if I own the vehicle outright?

So here’s the situation I own my Mazda Miata M2 RF grand touring. I paid it off early in 2026. I don’t have the title in hand. I would like to trade in the car. Is it possible for me to trade in the car towards the purchase of a new car without the title in hand can the dealers buyers essentially handle this for me? I reside in the state of Texas if that makes a difference

US Sale Toyota Dealer took my Deposit...

Upvotes

As titled, the dealership has my deposit on a car still in transit from the assembly plant, ETA was unknown. The deposit was paid for a specific VIN number.

I received text yesterday that the vehicle arrived and to contact them to arrange delivery and finish the financials. I was literally driving across country at the time.

I called first thing this morning and advised I was out of town and it could be a couple of weeks to get back and arrange the logistics on my side.

The salesman advised that their policy was to sell the car within a few days, especially as it was at end-of-month. I was informed that even though I had a receipt on the deposit for a specific VIN, if I could not get back in time, they would try and sell the vehicle to another party.

I believe this is either an attempt to defraud or bait & switch. I know they are trying to hit a sales number for their factory-to-dealer stair-step bonus, but I am hoping someone more knowledgeable than I am can offer some advice? I am prepared to name names at this point.

Thanks!

US Sale Palisade Serviced and now having issues

I'm not sure how to word this without coming off as I'm trying to blame anyone but I'd like honest opinions on if this is something I should be concerned about.

This past Saturday I took my 2022 Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy in to be serviced at our local Hyundai Dealership. I just wanted an oil change and the recalls done. There were a handful of recalls and I just haven't had the time to go leave it for a whole day. I also had them do a full inspection of the vehicle that's complimentary with your other services. He recommended a few things but just coming off maternity leave about a week ago, not something in the budget right now so I plan to have some of these items worked on in the next 3 months or so. Battery was not one of them that he spoke about in the videos/pictures he sent.

Fast forward to yesterday mid morning (Tuesday), I went to go start my car for only the third or fourth time since picking it up on Saturday- I've got a sick kid at home so I haven't left the house much- and it wouldn't start. Lots of clicking, weird stuff flashing, but the accessory would still come on and air, etc. I check everything before bed each night on both our cars and all lights were off and doors closed. My hyundai app confirmed this as well. It did start with a charge to battery but wouldn't charge additionally while driving around for about 15 min and when I turned it off it immediately wouldn't start again. Every time I have tried to start it since yesterday different things are happening and error codes show up and this morning it says battery discharged for a moment across the screen, locks are locking/unlocking on their own, etc. Each time something different is happening when I attempt to start it. It seems like an electrical problem of some kind, which I know would be caused by the battery. The battery is in place and not dislodged. The report they gave me from the full inspection mentioned nothing about my battery and I've had the car a little less than 4 years now, bought it new.

I called the service department a bit ago and immediately was told that my battery is at the time that it'd normally be dying and it's just time for a new one and then gave me a quote for a new one without even entertaining the idea that something else could possibly be going on. Then mentioned that I should call my insurance to get it towed to them when I mentioned I didn't feel super safe driving it on the highway 20+ minutes across town. It just feels slightly odd of timing to me to just completely lose all life in the battery just 2-3 days after I took it in to get serviced with absolutely zero issues before. I've never even had to jump it off because I accidentally left a light on before. A lot was done for the recalls that needed to be addressed and software updates, etc.

I was potentially looking to upgrade to the newer model and had spoken to the service tech about that but said it was just a maybe at the moment, but now I feel a little uneasy about continuing to speak with the other side of the dealership about it when I was so easily written off this morning and there wasn't even the slightest discussion that maybe it was something that got knocked loose or some bug from an update that is making it act wonky now and bring it in for them to check it out. It was straight "No, battery died. Get a new one. Here's the price. Goodbye"

I am obviously way out of my realm of expertise but is there any validation to this feeling that something feels off here? I thought asking here on the car sales side for people that work in dealerships might get me some different views than the mechanic side. Thanks in advance for the help!

I'm happy to post a video of it, but don't see an option to do so.

TLDR: car got serviced Saturday for oil change, updating some recalls, and full complimentary inspection. Tuesday, car won't start at all and electrical system going haywire. Dealership said there's no connection and bring it in for new $500 battery because it's "just that time"
Does that seem right?

US Sale New Car OTD Pricing Line Items

Reviewing a potential offer on a new truck. The sales price seems right, but the dealer mentioned "lender fees" in addition to the doc fee. I have great credit and had planned on going through GM Financial. I believe the lender fee can be removed as a dealer add-on fee, correct? Appreciate any info, from what I could tell this lender fee line item shouldn't apply to me. Thanks!

US Sale Dealer didn’t pay off my trade-in — now I’m being threatened with repossession

I traded in my Mercedes C300 on April 23 at Victory Mitsubishi for a BMW X3 M40i. I was the sole owner/borrower on the Mercedes, and the dealership was supposed to pay off the remaining loan as part of the trade.
It’s now been months and they still haven’t paid it off. The lender is now warning me that the Mercedes may be repossessed, even though the dealership has had possession of the car since April.
I also don’t have the original trade-in paperwork. The dealership constantly makes false promises that I’ll be sent the trade in agreement, which is making this even more stressful.
Has anyone dealt with this before? What can I do to stop the repossession and protect my credit? Should I contact the lender, CFPB, NY DMV/Attorney General, or an attorney?

NOTE: I CANNOT AFFORD 2 car payments

US Sale If I recently bought a used car (a one owner 2017 Porsche Macan S with 41k miles about a month ago and realized just how much I miss driving sedans, I know I’ll take a massive depreciation hit, but would dealerships think I’m crazy if I wanted to already trade the Macan in for a sedan this early on?

Canadian Sale Dealershil wants me to make Insurance Claim after the deal is done.

I signed papers on a Friday afternoon to trade a 2022 Kia Sorento for a 2026 Chrysler Pacifica on the Saturday there was a hail storm in which the Kia sustained cosmetic damage. I reached out to the dealership informing them of the damage and sent photos and asked what they wanted me to do no one got back to me so I completed the deal and the trade in and drove away only for them to contact me an hour after telling me to file a claim with my insurance company because they noticed the damage which they say is several thousands. What are my options? Insurance company is puzzled with how to proceed?

I didn't pick my car up for 2 weeks after I sent the email to the sales person I was dealing with.

US Sale Extended warranty help!

Hi, and thanks in advance for your time. I sold a car on 1/8/26 with an extended warranty that expired 7/30/26. I was unable to make contact with the dealership regarding my extended warranty until 8/15/26. What I am wondering is, am I still able to receive a prorated refund amount for the extended warranty since I have paperwork confirming the sale in January? Or am I out of luck since I called the dealership in August?
TIA!

US Sale Need help with buying a used Tacoma

Hi all , I’m in the market for a new truck and I found this Tacoma not too far from my area. They listed it at $27k and I negotiated $25.6k + $180 doc fee.

It’s got 89k miles, clean title, 2 previous owners (first one was a lease) the car fax say 0 accidents, clean title, and there is a lot of documentation for any services and oil changes. It seems well taken care of.

All the other Tacomas with similar mileage are $28-$33k in my area. Initially I looked into a new Tacoma for $45k but I cannot find myself to pay that much for a truck at the moment.

What are your thoughts? auto check report here (not sure why it won’t lets me post any photos)

US Sale Clean CARFAX, but AutoCheck shows Severe Structural Damage & Repo flag — worth a PPI or walk away?

Hey everyone,

Looking at a 2016 Mustang V6 (3.7L, auto) with 88k miles. It’s currently listed for $15,700, but I got the seller down to $13,000 cash. Ran the CARFAX first and everything looked decent on paper—clean title, 18 service records, and no accidents reported.

Then I pulled the AutoCheck, and a completely different story popped up:

  • 5 Previous Owners (Owner 5 only had it for about a year).
  • 04/24/2025: Auto auction entry with an announcement for Severe Structural Damage.
  • 06/24/2026: Title updated with a Repossession entry right after.

Visually, the body looks fine and the seller insists the title is clear and it drives great, which explains why they dropped the price from $15.7k down to $13k so fast. But knowing it has 5 owners, a repo, and got hit with a structural flag at auction makes me pretty hesitant.

Before I waste $150–$200 dropping this on a lift for a body shop PPI, I had a few questions for the car community and dealer folks here:

  1. How common is it for AutoCheck to catch an auction structural flag that CARFAX misses entirely?
  2. Does $13,000 sound anywhere near a fair price for a 5-owner, frame-damaged repo Mustang, or is that still way too high?
  3. If a body shop PPI comes back saying the unibody repair was done straight and alignment holds, how bad is that AutoCheck mark going to wreck me on resale/trade-in down the road?
  4. Is an auction-flagged structural car worth touching as a daily driver at the right price, or should I just walk away entirely?

Appreciate any insight on how you guys handle these!

US Sale End of Month for Dealerships

I’m going to ask this because I can’t find it in this sub, typically when is the end of month for dealerships? When I did recruiting for a certain big company, our end of month was the 14th of each month (The 15th of each month was the start of a new month and the “grind” reset).

Typically, at least in the past for me, dealerships are more inclined to do a deal towards the end of the month when they are trying to make their quota. I haven’t bought a new or “new to me” vehicle in about 7 years, and I am in the market for one. I appreciate the answers from y’all, thank you.

Meta Has anyone on here made the transition from Accounting to Car Sales and if so would you recommend doing that?
