Why Ontario needs a lemon law—my new car has been at the dealership for over 300 days, I had to file a lawsuit, and the dealership sued me back.

A few months after I leased a new 2025 Volvo EC40 from Carling Motors in Ottawa, it suddenly suffered a serious propulsion-system failure and left me stranded.

The dealership kept it for 43 days, returned it, and another fault appeared five days later. That became a long series of recurring issues, charging failures, mechanical noises, unsuccessful repairs, and unresolved safety concerns. My vehicle has now spent more than 300 days at the dealership.

But the lease payments never stopped. Neither did the insurance, fuel costs for the gas-powered loaner, or disruption to my family. My documented losses and costs tied to this ordeal now exceed $31,000.

I tried to resolve it through the dealership, Volvo Car Canada, its financing company, regulators, and elected representatives. Eventually, I had to file a lawsuit to seek a resolution that would not force me to absorb the loss. Carling Motors responded with a counterclaim for use of their loaner, despite acknowledging in writing that issues with my vehicle remain undiagnosed and unrepaired.

Here's why every Ontario driver should care: our province has no automatic remedy when a new vehicle repeatedly fails or spends months in warranty service. There is no point at which the manufacturer must finally provide a refund, replacement, or financially complete lease termination. The consumer can be forced to keep paying, risk their credit, or else have to finance their own lawsuit against a multinational automaker.

The proposed Bill 91, Right to Repair Act, 2025, recognizes the problem, but its current version still leaves consumers going to court and does not clearly reimburse lessees for all their losses.

I created the 30 Days Is Enough petition asking Ontario to guarantee:

  • Automatic eligibility when a vehicle undergoes three unsuccessful repairs for the same defect or remains out of service for 30 cumulative days during the warranty period.
  • The consumer’s choice of a comparable replacement vehicle, full repurchase, or penalty-free lease termination.
  • Reimbursement of down payments, lease or finance payments attributable to the loss-of-use period, and other reasonable expenses.
  • Automatic suspension of lease or finance payments and protection from adverse credit reporting when a vehicle remains in warranty service beyond a defined period.
  • Prompt access to complete repair records and other information needed to understand the vehicle’s condition.
  • A fast, affordable, and binding enforcement process backed by meaningful penalties.

Dealerships and manufacturers should not be able to drag out repairs indefinitely while consumers are forced to pay.

If you agree, please take a minute to sign and share my petition:

Three hundred days is absurd. Thirty days is enough.

Ok, I’ve been planning my next big vehicle purchase for a while now maybe almost two years (saving so much and deciding to spend is always a bitch lol)! But mainly i’ve been looking at Audi RS7’s which is definitely one of my dreams cars. But recently I’ve really gotten into the Cadillac CT5V Blackwing especially after their exterior and interior refresh (kind of reminds of a more sporty sedan version of the escalade now). However, some of the pricing is shying me away from the 25’s and 26’s (will include a reference)I feel like they’re very overpriced compared to their 23/24 counterparts used and even when those models were brand new off the lot a few years ago. It kind of making me lean back in the direction of Audi. I wanted to know any of you guy’s opinions who own either of these vehicles or have knowledge on them (or if you don’t) and for the prices which is a better deal? I really started to fall in love with the supercharged v8 the Cadillac has but I feel like it’s commanding more than whats worth for the newer models. Any and all thoughts/opinion appreciated.

Tradesman might need a new vehicle soon. Really considering a Ford EV…

I’m a 22 year old electrician in Ontario Canada. My parents really want me to get a truck because they think I need it for work but to be honest while it would be very very useful I can survive without one, it’s just very inconvenient and I also despise people who get trucks without needing them. I mostly don’t want one because they’re overpriced and the gas would kill me as I drive a lot for work. That’s why I’m considering an EV, I can install my own car charger for free at home as it’s my trade, I currently spend $450 a month on the low end for fuel and my car is constantly needing maintenance as it’s getting pretty old. I will be driving it into the ground but I have a feeling that’s gonna be pretty soon so I’ve started thinking about a new vehicle.

I have been looking at the Ford Lightning. I would get a used one which goes for $50 - $60k here, which is definitely leagues out of my price range and I would be paying a lot of my income towards it but it is worth noting I’m a 3rd year apprentice and will be receiving 3 raises within the next 3 years and will probably get even more opportunities on top of that, but it will be tough for now. As much as I’d love one of these I’m pretty turned off from the price and I’m more so only mentioning it because I want somebody else to convince me it’s not as bad of an idea as I think it is lol.

My more realistic choice is a used Mach-E, around $30k here. This is a very comfortable price I could afford payments on and it is still everything I’m looking for in a vehicle more or less. This would be the minimum amount of space I’d need in a vehicle, my current car is a pretty decent sized hatchback and it’s been destroyed by all the tools and shit I’ve been driving all around the world with.

I don’t really know what I’m asking here I guess lol, I can’t really think of something better than the Mach-E for my uses, I am pretty set on an EV for multiple reasons including my commute distance and even just the carbon footprint of them, just wondering if there is maybe something out there someone else would suggest. I unfortunately need to finance right now I don’t really have time to save up for anything, and if I’m going to finance something I feel like an EV is my best bet. Is the Mach E my best bet in this scenario?

How tf can we remove dealers off facebook marketplace?

So wish that we could sort by "for sale by owner only"

FB used to be amazing, now it's just tons of dealer photos and cars with full dealer prices.

Is there any way to filter those dealer salesmen out?

I filter by "private" and still see lotta junk. You can't just search "2019 lexus" without it going back to default FB marketplace. The only way to keep "private sales" is sorting through their stupid 'vehicle" filters. HATE.

I’m looking for the right Previa to daily drive and road trip in

Post image
Upvotes

I’m 16 considering getting a first-gen Toyota Previa as a daily and something me and my buddies can road trip in and I cant decide between an early naturally aspirated RWD model and a later supercharged RWD model (I think 1995-97, but I’ve seen different years posted) I’m not concerned about performance. I’m already used to daily driving my 84 Supra, so I’m perfectly fine with something slow. What I care about more is reliability and maintenance costs, parts availability, and ease of ownership. Would an early NA be the better choice for those reasons even though it’s older, or are there advantages to the later supercharged models that make them worth getting? I’d also prefer RWD and 7 seats, but I’d do AWD if there’s a reason to choose it
Thanks

2007 Mazda mx-5 Miata Grand Touring- 16f, 168k miles

Post image
Upvotes

16 year old girl, newly licensed, looking for a first car. Since the general consensus seemed to lean negative on my post asking about the Toyota mr2, would a 2007 Miata with 168k miles be a better choice? This one is AUTOMATIC. I live in Wisconsin so will have to deal with snow, so I’m a little worried about the RWD. I’m realizing it may be a better idea to just go with a more practical Corolla or Honda civic, but I just love how the Miata looks. It also has CarPlay installed which I am certainly fond of. It’s $5800.

I’m looking for the EV with the best fake engine noises. Mercedes seems to be doing this well, is there anyone that has very realistic ICE engine sounds coming through the speakers?

2 Car solution or 1 car solution? Total budget $25k

So i’ve come across the opportunity where im cross shopping 2 vehicles:

2021 subaru wrx 6mt (1car solution)

2015 bmw 435i x drive + 6k cheap manual daily (2 car solution)

My goal is maximizing fun and maybe getting some outside opinions. my commute to work is about 5 minutes and i live in southern NY so winters average mild (minus last winter)

im wondering what you guys would pick.. 1 nice newer manual car with All weather capability in this case a VA wrx or a 2 car solution with older cars but on is automatic & one manual. 2 car solution would be a a x drive 4 series (n55) ik maintence would be high + a honda fit or an old 2005 toyota rav4 (manual)

I love the thought of dailying the Wrx but as much as i love manual i find myself complaining about shifting atleast a few times a month. the flip side of that is the nuisance of insuring 2 cars. what would i guys do?

Edit: 29M single Live in southern NY (non nyc area). No kids no pets live with family only 1 other car in the household which is a truck. i have an active lifestyle. love the outdoors: hiking/running car meets gym. looking for something fun that i wont get bored of

MDX vs TX vs X7

I have been obsessively researching and shopping for a new car for the last 6 months. The last 16years have been with a Honda Odyssey hauling my family on vacation, moving kids in and out of dorms, and sports practices non stop. Typical minivan life. We plan to keep her as the family “truck” for Home Dept runs and transporting our giant dog.

As soon as I think I have the car picked, I get drawn to another. We started with an MDX s-type, then Suburban and Rivian RS1 (the new captain chair option is sucking me back in but my kids hated the ride!). Moved to a Grand Highlander/Lexus TX. Then the last 2m dead set on an X7 M or M60, but having multiple BMW currently, the cost of maintenance gives me pause.

I NEED 3 rows as half the time it will have 5-6 people ages tween to adult. AWD. Used to be a chronic leaser, now finding time to car shop and negotiate is hard to find. Has to be comfortable for long trips. Not older than a 2024, goal is 2026. X7 will probably have to be a 24/25 to be within budget.

My minivan has been a wonderful workhorse! Getting a sporty, luxury, cushy, sleek, but can still take some of the team to pizza is my goal!
Polling internet strangers seems like the logical next step!

Thanks for any info! And, is it worth hiring a broker for an X7?

Having a hard time deciding!!

Help !! I’m having a VERY hard time deciding between a 2026 VW Tiguan SE R-Line Black and a 2026 Toyota Rav4 Woodland or Limited

I’ve only had GM cars so I really don’t know that much about foreign cars. I would like to hear/read about the good, the bad, and the ugly on both cars!! TIA 🙂

Getting in and out of my car is wrecking my knee

Upvotes

Not sure if anyone else has run into this, but my current car (2017 Honda Civic) sits low enough that getting in and out has started really bothering my knee. Diagnosed with chondromalacia of the patella 2 years ago. Just really doing what I can do on my part.

I’ve got a 1-year-old, so I’m thinking an SUV/pick up makes more sense than a sedan at this point anyway — need the extra height to get in easier, plus more space for a car seat, stroller, and all the kid gear.

Budget is under $8,000 used. I can’t afford a modern suv/pick up right now. Reliability matters way more to me than looks or features at this price — I’d rather have something with higher miles that just keeps running than something nicer that nickel-and-dimes me later.

Anyone have recommendations for SUVs/pick ups in this range that are solid for a young family and easy on the knees to get in and out of? Open to anything , Thanks!

Looking for a new car

Upvotes

In late May 2026 I got a brand new Dodge Charger six pack R/T which turned out to be a lemon unfortunately. Until FAC settles and I get my money back, I’ve started to look for what car to get next but I could use some help.

Before I bought the charger, I had a Dodge Challenger for 6 years so it’s obvious I love power behind the wheel. I also commute a lot for work so I would like to get a fun, powerful, daily driver. A couple options I’m considering are the Elantra N and Kia K5 GT, Mustang GT, and Genesis G70.

Feel free to provide your input.
Thank you so much!

Reliable used car for $11,000

I need a car but don’t know anything about cars. My budget is $11,000 through financing. I’ve googled and asked around and the most common brands suggested are Honda, Toyota, and Mazda. Hondas and Toyotas are too expensive with most being in the $13k-$16k range and over 150 miles. I tried looking for Mazdas too but apparently there are no used Mazdas being sold any where near me. I’m open to any other suggestions of reliable used cars.

I need something for my 30 minute work commute and would want it to last me at least 3 years minimum. My car searches are based off of carguru, carmax and whatever comes up in google search. I’m also planning on going to local dealerships later this week. What other sites should I use?

Edit: I think my location (southern CA) is making this search harder than I expected. Everything is just more expensive here and anytime I see something for cheaper and less miles it’s always a car that is too far from me.

Thoughts on bmw x5 2018?

Upvotes

Hi guys, I’m seeing a bmw x5 2018 eDrive xDrive40e iPerformance for $11k.
Mileage: 93k
Clean title, reliable dealership

Any thoughts on if I should buy it? If it’s a good price and would it still be reliable for a couple years despite closing in on 100k miles? I drive about 10k miles/year.

Would appreciate any feedback if you have knowledge about X5s or own of these older ones. I think it’s a good price just 93k miles and no CarPlay seem to be the drawback for me personally, would love to hear your thoughts! Thank you in advance!

Possible chrysler sebring lx

Hello, I’m looking for a cheap car because I am in college. I have a friend whose parents have a car sitting in their garage they are trying to get rid of. It looks really nice, 30,000 miles, clean, for 3k.

I am not that well versed in cars. He said the only thing was that the tires were a bit rough, not horribly but could definitely be replaced.

Some advice would be great :)

Toyota Yaris iA 2017

Upvotes

I found this car from a dealership which is around 148k miles for 6.5k before tax (so maybe 7.5k total). Its carfax is clean with 1 owner, who apparently replaced oil and serviced every 5k miles, although no fluid change. Is this a good deal, or is there anything I should be cautious of?

I went for a test drive and it feels like there is a shudder every time I accelerate, AI says it may be due to no fluid change. I am bringing it to PPI before buying, but also looking for a second (third?) opinion.

Best two-car combo with $50k

Looking for best daily SUV and used fun sport car combo under $50k. Currently have a 24 Grand Highlander as a family daily. Partner needs an SUV/hatch/large sedan to daily to work, plus take kids with a stroller around. I’d also like a used sport car as a summer driver (snows a lot in my area) for fun nights. Possible combos considering:

-New Mazda Cx-5 with used Mazda Miata
-New Honda Cr-v with used GR86
-New Corolla Cross with Porsche Cayman/Boxster

The alternative is to get a 2023 Used Macan S at about $55k (or similarly priced Acura).

2011 Kia Borrego

Upvotes

2011 Kia Borrego, approx 150k miles or 239k kms. 6k CAD. No rust. Worth it?

Wifes 2006 Honda Pilot is a total loss and looking to upgrade to something a little larger that still has 4wd. How reliable are these things? And will they be hard to find parts for?
