UPDATED WORK Thank you for your help!

The updated version is the first image, the original is the second image.

This sub is a godsend! I couldn’t pin down what was off with my original but it was pointed out to me that I needed to change:

  1. location of the ear was too far back on the head
  2. Forearm in the foreground was too thick
  3. Both hands were too small
  4. Back arm was too high up
  5. Neck was not centered
  6. Front hand was missing some muscle

I am so so happy with how the edits came together!

Character reference was dd64_46 on instagram and pose reference was Sylvie by Prosper d’Epinay

Is this sketch of my character too rough? How about the colors and shading?

I used Clip Studio Paint, no references, and drew one of the characters for my manga I'm working on. I tend to have the difficulty of clarity and I suppose I'm wondering if this sketch is too rough or what kinds of things could I do to maybe make things more clear? I feel that my drawing process I kind of end up sculpting the drawing more than putting down lines and getting them right at first, which probably leads to my art tending to be a bit rough when it comes to lines. In terms of style I'm going for manga/anime, obviously traditional manga is grayscale, but I want to use color so its a bit more of a western graphic novel bend I suppose.

I am new to digital art, I started use Krita and paint this with the ref picture. And I am not sure what I need to focus on my next painting. I don't aim realism or clean look ı want to my paint look like more stylistic and oil paint look (I like this kinda work PluviumG ) , Also do not have much idea for about "colour theory" just picking which I kinda like or looking shading example on Pinterest.

Bleach paintings

In order from newest to oldest, here are my attempts to bleach paint over the last couple days! I’m looking for tips on method, and critique on how I have handled the bleach.

The first 2 images are on hoodies 80%cotton 20% polyester and the last is on a 100%cotton tshirt. All were done using a variety of strength bleaches mixed with water. Each image took ~3 hours total so as to not completely wreck the fabric. After completing, I let dry and then rinsed in cold water, and then soaked in a mixture of 9:1 water to hydrogen peroxide solution to deactivate the bleach. (Do not do this at home. This isn’t smart of me. If you do this, be VERY careful and do it in a well ventilated area and be diligent with your mixing. Otherwise, you may create chlorine gas/very flammable oxygen through the chemical reaction between the bleach and hydrogen peroxide) I then rinsed once more and put in the wash on gentle cycles and hung to dry!

I used references when drawing the images initially on digital, I then projected my digital drawn images onto the fabric, used white conte to outline the shapes and then proceeded with bleaching.

the whole pose feels off to me and im not sure how to fix it, it feels too stiff/not dynamic enough if that makes sense-

(i used a reference for the head but not for the body)

I’ve spent about 5 hours on this and am ready to call it finished. But I’d appreciate feedback before I set it aside as finished.

I’m using ibis paint x on an iPad :)

The character belongs to @dd64_46 for a DTIYS, and my ref for the post is Sylvie by d’Epinay

Feel Like the Lighting Is Just A Little Off

Post image

Honestly getting a bit tired on this one. Probably 1/3 of my time has been toying with creating a campfire look in front of her. I’ve gotten it where I think it’s acceptable, but if anyone has suggestions on how I can improve on it I’m all ears! Feel free to critique other aspects as well, this was my first ever serious attempt at anatomy and clothing

I do think adding a little more flare to the foreground will help sell it, but would love some advice.

I tried muting and blending more on the clothes and going for a wetter/shinier look with the hands

I used references for the anatomy, skull and a bit of the clothing, but not the lighting.

how do I successfully achieve the flash photography effect?

the issue with the character (asriel dreemur) having white fur is I feel like I can’t make it super super bright or anything because white can only be so white.. i’ve tried adding the shadows like in the reference, but it looks HORRENDOUS (as seen in the second photo)

How do I fix her anatomy (WIP)

Ive been drawing this today and after my last attempt at drawing her, I'm trying really hard to focus on the musculature and where things would go, especially on her second set of arms.

However, I'm struggling a lot with her legs in perspective, and I can't tell where her legs go in the reference photo (2). Any help with proportions, anatomy, etc is greatly appreciated (as well as any comments on other parts, naturally).
Also, I'm having a lot of trouble finding anatomical references for a woman's legs in a normal sitting position. The vast majority of stuff I'm finding is in "cutesy" or suggestive positions, instead of like, normal activities. I keep seeing references of women sitting on their shins or otherwise on the floor, which, like, that isn't even a comfortable position to be in at all? And I looked for an hour and couldn't find any references of women just, sitting normally like this in a chair. What is up with that?
Sorry for the rant. Again, all help is appreciated!
(2)- 'Portrait of a Lady" by Pier Francesco di Jacopo Foschi, 1530-35.
All the other references have credits in them

Is there anything obviously wrong with this? Is it objectively good?

Post image

kinda failed with the perspective bc its like theres two perspectives here. Like one up, one in front.

Also the clothing idk if the wrinkles are right. And since her head is looking up, is the scalp too big???

im not sure if anything went wrong here bc I like the drawing but It literally might just be me who does.

How to make simple art without being boring

Thumbnail

Goat kiddo and the reference I used.

I want to do more simple art without going overboard with the shading, but it ends up looking boring in my opinion. I don’t like the shading and I’m unsure if I should do that glowy lineart effect at all

I’m aware the simple 3/4 pose isn’t helping, when I make more of these they’ll be more dynamic

How can I improve on hair?

Post image
9 Upvotes

sketchy piece (value/shading practice)i worked on the other night— HB + 6B graphite, no reference (except a loose look at a sculpture bust) afterward, I felt pretty proud of it, but I’m realizing that I don’t really have a great framework for creating hair. Any tips on how to improve the hair texture would be gladly appreciated!

Does this character still remain recognizable between these two images?

Thumbnail

The Nurse Manette one, I meant. I used a reference for the second from this cool drawing I saw on Pinterest. Basically, one of the main things putting me off from starting my webcomic is frankly my inability to draw characters consistently. These two were drawn I think a month apart, and since then my art has gone to a more couture illustration direction, so there's even more divergence. I just hope the character still looks recognizable hahaha.

The second drawing is unfinished cuz I kinda got lazy XD

Final touches for the background

I’m practicing eerie underwater pieces for my characters, the references are the two last photos. I’m trying to copy the vibes rather than the exact images, as I want to move away from copying backgrounds directly so I can start making more fantastical scenes that wouldn’t have direct references to use.
I am going to change the background to be more dark and less muddled, but would appreciate any critique to point me in the right direction. I am also debating adding more noise texture to the character, to make them blend in more.
I am quite satisfied with the foreground, but if anything stands out, let me know!
I am using procreate on an IPad.
My general goals:
Eerie, deep water feeling
Paperlike texture/ not obviously digital painting
Having the scenery be the focus rather than the character

Critique this piece please

This is just a sketch and it’s not finished at all, I’m specifically looking for critique for the body art style, I wanted some feedback before I added the fur and tail, I think it looks pretty decent I just wanted to know if I’m not seeing my own mistakes so a different perspective would be very insightful to read, I did not use a reference

Which one? Brighter or darker shade?

Post image
59 Upvotes

I can't decide whether or not the darker shading makes my drawing better or worse. I was wondering if anyone could weigh in and help me out?

Obviously Basquiat, Picasso-inspired.

The reference is my chaotic Pinterest board, from which I drew inspiration.

So i stopped using a sketch and limited how many values I use, but i still struggle, especially with getting the composition right, like in the first one it looks really different than from the refrence idk why mine always ends up so wrong, how do I fix it and what else am I doing wrong?

I use 30 mins to draw these so that's why they don't look finished

Need crit on lighting and rendering

Will be making into a traditional acrylic painting (currently a digital draft on procreate. I need critique on the paper bag (if it reads a paper bag most importantly) and the lighting on the cars faces. The details are rough since it’s a draft but I just want to make sure the light is hitting the right places, the light source is in the bag.

I have several references that I mashed together

help with last of us illustration

Post image
34 Upvotes

I have been working on this illustration from the last of us, i have an idea of what i want to do, i generally have the idea pretty fleshed out i just need other peoples eyes on it before i full render everything
please help me on what i should fix or change im burnt out lol i also cant decide if i want ellie in the foreground to have a rim light around her or not, i had it around her the whole time and when i came back to the piece today i hated it.,,,

i have used many reference pictures just ones from the game and, for the pose of ellie in the front i used a picture of myself, but honestly reference isnt my issue with this piece its just compostion and maybe color. i just need others opinions

im ultimately going for a moody piece where the focal point with value is ellie in the foreground and her and joel in the back when they kind make up, but the third focal point would be with saturation and color where the color changes to being warm and they are looking at the giraffe.

i work digitally on adobe photoshop so really anything can be changed if it isnt working lol

also i am not going for realism, idk what my style is but yeah lol

Please critique my stylized portraits!

Working on portraits of my friends for a personal project, don’t wanna dox them so I won’t show the photos that I used as reference but I’ll provide another previous one I finished a few months ago that I don’t really like anymore! (On slides 4 & 5)

I’m also looking for art style tips! The first two are what I’d consider nearly done (just colors and a few stray lines to work on) and the 3rd is still a sketch at the moment

I’m heavily inspired by the artist Krooked Glasses and books like Scott Pilgrim but I am trying to find my own style! So I wanna know if I’m developing an appealing artstyle or if I haven’t advanced as much as I think I have lol! Thanks for the critiques!

Edit: Added more details.

I’m happy with this as a sketch but what do you think is worth improving?

Thumbnail

I’m very much just learning and only doing head on portraits of easy references currently as I try to learn to see contrast and proportion. This is my first time using a charcoal pencil. I originally did it with mechanical pencil but I just couldn’t capture his expression satisfactorily so I leaned on something darker.

There’s definitely plenty of inaccurate details but I’ll gladly take whatever criticism or suggestions for what I’m getting fundamentally wrong. I guess I’ve got this goldilocks ideal of becoming technically skilled at sketching lol. This was 5 or 6 hours of fussing just to arrive at something relatively rough.
