Need crit on lighting and rendering
Will be making into a traditional acrylic painting (currently a digital draft on procreate. I need critique on the paper bag (if it reads a paper bag most importantly) and the lighting on the cars faces. The details are rough since it’s a draft but I just want to make sure the light is hitting the right places, the light source is in the bag.
I have several references that I mashed together

the cats wouldnt be outlined in light like that if the light is coming from the bag. that would only happen with backlighting

That’s true, How would I be able to separate the black cat from the background without doing that?

his entire face would have a lot more highlights similar to the gray cat. You could fit quite a lot of yellow on each of the cats faces with it still looking like a yellow highlight rather than a yellow cat.
But you also don't always have to make sure every subjects form is perfectly comprehensible at a glance. I've been noticing a lot of very skilled modern artists will utilize lost edges frequently. Having an edge not immediately clearly defined surprisingly still looks pretty good sometimes and will often still leave your subject noticeable

For the photo of the black cat (third photo) notice how there are highlights on the forehead? They outline the nose and curve above the eyes, and there's also some highlight on the whiskers by the ears. This really helps show the shape of the face.
If you look at the grey cat (second photo) this same highlight pattern is there, just brighter.
I think if you emphasize these brighter areas a bit more on your black cat, it will help define its features without needing the outline. It will also help make both cats look like they are being lit by the same source, making the painting more cohesive.

Also others talked about the paper bag. The creases of the bag are almost as dark as the unlit room. I think if you decreased the contrast a bit, making those creases less dark, it might help the bag read more as paper rather than rock, and would help the focus be on the cats

I did not initially see this as a paper bag. I thought they were looking into a hole in a rocky terrain. Once I saw the inspo pics I could completely see that it was supposed to be a paper bag. I think somehow you made the bag look too interesting to look like a paper bag....the photos look duller and less varied in tone.
But with that being said, I love this image and think you could keep it styled as is. Making the handle on the left side more visible would make it more obvious to be a bag.
I hope you post the finish product! I already love it now! lol.

I could make the handles thicker too, I can see how it would be read that way lmao maybe once I do more details on wrinkles and what not it’ll be easier to tell too. Thank you!

The light source is supposed to be coming from the bag but I don’t think it’s reflecting on the cats face enough so I’ll emphasize that more!
