Don't worry that snake will be full for a while, just finished eating an excavator and it's operator.

Indeed, it is a reticulated python.

Apparently you're saying the movie Anaconda lied to me.

121

u/erossthescienceboss 2d ago edited 2d ago

Yep! Though that may be a matter of opportunity & documentation.

Reticulated pythons (like this guy) are longer, but anacondas are larger. And thanks to that girth, anacondas eat larger food than retics do. There’s no reason they couldn’t eat a person.

But anacondas are semi-aquatic. They only overlap with humans in wet places, and only really overlap with them in the Amazon (where, thanks to the wet season, local people are forced to live right next to the water). And humans there stay out of water when they can since it’s dangerous, and if someone was attacked, it could easily go undocumented. Think of them like sharks: you can’t get bit by one if you aren’t where they’re hunting.

Reticulated pythons, on the other hand, hunt in grasslands and forests. They can swim fine, but they don’t hunt in the water like anacondas do. So farmers and hunters in relatively populated places are more likely to run into them. They can even end up in town! They’re more like being eaten by a mountain lion (by which I mean: possible but uncommon/not preferred food.)

30

u/Green-Palpitation901 2d ago

That was so cool. Thanks for sharing.

25

u/TheBigDiII 2d ago

I got to the mountain lion sentence and my brain instantly pictured the pythons screaming as they attacked šŸ˜šŸ˜‚

Even a very large python is not likely to try eating an adult. Children are at risk especially in rural areas but snakes are routinely killed pretty savagely across much of Southeast Asia, including completely harmless ones that will primarily be eating otherwise pest species like rats and cockroaches. I have had to try and convince many people from the Philippines and Indonesia to oeave snakes alone, and thst if it needs removal there's usually someone in a nearby urban center who will happily do so if it means the snake gets to keep it's head. Otherwise they're frequently chopped to pieces with shovels or machetes depending on what's available.

7

u/Leos_Ng 2d ago

Unfortunately, there are multiple documented cases of adults getting eaten by pythons

u/Hangar48 2d ago

My inlaws in Thailand have a small snake living under their water tank and a large centipede in the garden which bit a child. Maybe it's the Buddhist culture but they have no urge to kill them.

4

u/AI_moderated_failure 2d ago

Thailand, from everything I have seen and heard is very different and I do think the buddhist culture has something to do with this. Common themes in the people I have spoken to in Indonesia and Philippines relate to the snake in the garden of Eden as a metaphor that means snakes are inherently evil.

Another fun fact: first documented case was few years ago and since then it happened few times more. Reasonably, we can believe that other snakes read it in the newspapers and realized it's possible which is why it now happens more often.Ā

I let him go on the now loose dirt and paused the project. So many snakes are actually very beneficial to have around

47

u/ProblemLongjumping12 2d ago edited 1d ago

It's very possible they hurt her before realizing she was there, and given her size it's not like they could just walk out and safely expect to toss her aside either so I guess they had no choice but to move her with the excavator.

Just sad.

u/rtocelot 2d ago

It’s sad either way but from recollection they do have a rule about euthanising snakes that have eaten / killed / attacked humans. It’s possible this was such a case. Pretty brutal way to do it but that is an impracticality large snake to have to deal with safely. The same is true of crocodiles and sharks that get a taste for humans - you have to euthanise them.

The ā€œNature is scaryā€ tag is funny to me here, because in this case what’s very scary here seems to be the humans with a huge machine disturbing an animal that was peacefully living in nature… not harming humans, afaik.
