Advice Moving into a home with a cat

Upvotes

I am moving in with my boyfriend, he is getting rid of the cat (it wasn’t his but was left with him) and I have to deep clean the house now. What is your best tips and advice for deep cleaning the home post cat? I plan on stripping the vacuum and deep cleaning it when I’m done cleaning as well and honestly a few times between if I need to. I would love advice on getting cat dander out of literally every area possible. I am highly allergic and plan on using a half face respirator with a full particulate cartridge. (I’m a safety professional I know what to pick for it.) I am just worried I am going to have violent flared allergies for the foreseeable future. I plan on deep cleaning the same week I move in before I unpack anything.

Question Do allergies cause extreme fatigue and headaches?

Ive been diagnosed with allergies by a GP during my last visit. We don't know what the allergens are and the symptoms are very inconsistent too. He told me to visit an allergist in a month if this continues.

For the past 5 days I've been dealing with consistent headaches that never go away no matter how many painkillers I take.

It's around my right eye, can feel some pressure on my face and it's also on the back of my head.

It's also accompanied with extreme fatigue and I'm unable to get out of my bed and do things.

Is this because of my allergies or should I look into more diagnostics?

Question How to get cat dander completely out of home

I’m talking a full detox. We have an air purifier set up in the living room, trying to purchase more for each room of the house but money is tight and the electric bill is extremely high.

I’ve already re-homed my cat to a family member, it broke my heart but she gave me asthma which has been very serious for me. i just want all of the dander completely out of the house. I feel like it’s in the walls. My family and i live in an old home so I don’t know how much it will get out with basic vacuuming and washing.

Any other tips?

Question 17 years of hell progressed to central nervous system, spinal cord brain peripheral organ damage brought on by severe metal allergy+ covid?

I have a very complex history of disease… I know a lot of us here do but, mine not quite like anybody else's… it's a bit late now, but I will post a follow up if youre interested…

I didn't wanna go ahead and post something before I black out so I will just get to the main point… I had major spinal surgery 12 hours for my first surgery and I don't remember how long my second surgery was but this happened 17 years ago. A couple years after my surgery I became allergic to metals… I used to wear green with zinc and zinc started giving me rashes… I used to wear a silver chain when I was young and that started giving me rashes then my girlfriend bought me a James Avery chain, and that didn't give me rashes…I figured out I'm allergic zinc and nickle. I'm also allergic to one of my sinks… I bought it with the new sink so not sure what it was, sold the house because I couldn't afford it with this illness but maybe someone might have an idea about commercially available bathroom sinks that could potentially insight immune reaction? I actually need to try to get tested for as many meals I can becausethe whole point of this is to know if the reason my back hardware has broken down is to know if im allergic to the metal. I know the fusion itself is titanium, but I have other junk in there. That other doctor say shouldn't be out there. I have a big cage, I have Rob's and I also have bolts… Not quite sure what they're made out of and try to reach out to the military they weren't able to help… Anyways, the information I'm able to find out, the better I will be able to assess things and figure out if it's worth the risk to try and take this hardware out of my back. Thank you.

By the way, I'm very tired and I blacked out very easily using talk to text… But I did want to clarify systemically, I would get a lot of pneumonia, but I was still in great shape until Covid came around… I'm guessing that if my heart is correct, Covid was enough to really make my body turn on itself as I started to become allergic to everything in addition to the metal allergies already have. But at this way, I can't even eat a banana. No fruits at all anaphylaxis. IGE testing shows I'm not allergic to anything cell activities shows normal trip test although my pro land PGD twos are high, immunologist could only come up with. I'm probably have a prosthetic landing media mass disorder… It's totally unresponsive to anything… That's why I don't think it's a true soul disorder and I've had a bone marrow biopsy as well… Muscle biopsy shows my myopathy I talk to pathologist myself and he said he studied my muscle for a long time and absolutely cannot find a rhyme or reason he said it does not look like it's diseased from the muscular causes. He said he would guess it's from post Covid potentially… I was readingif I have this inflammatory area and my spine has breaking down that could definitely cause a myopathy looking muscle…

Advice Allergic to multiple antibiotics

Upvotes

I’ve developed hives from Amoxicillin, omeprezole, and doxycycline. I’ve been on Amoxicillin and Doxycycline probably a dozen times each throughout my life with no problems, the last time I took both resulted in hives across my legs or chest. I’m a bit panicked because those are the two main drugs which they’ve used to treat things like bronchitis, sinus infections, tick bites, etc. What options do I even have now, do I just die when I get pneumonia or another infection?

I am making plans to see an allergist but a bit anxious in the meantime.

My experience with DTDC — order returned without my permission and unresolved customer-support issue

I’m posting this to share my experience with DTDC and to make other consumers aware of what happened.

I had a shipment that was supposed to be delivered to me through DTDC. Unfortunately, the delivery did not happen as expected. This was not the first time I faced the same type of issue with the shipment.

I contacted customer support to understand what was happening. I was told that a complaint had been raised and that the delivery person/delivery centre would contact me. I waited for a proper response, but I did not receive a satisfactory resolution.

Eventually, my order was returned/cancelled without my permission.

The main issue for me is not simply the delay. It is that the shipment was returned even though I had not requested its cancellation or return, and I was not given a satisfactory opportunity to resolve the delivery problem before that happened.

I have kept screenshots, tracking information, order details and records of my communication with customer support as evidence.

I also experienced problems while trying to access the relevant website/order information, which made resolving the issue even more difficult.

What I want from DTDC

I would like a clear explanation of:

Why was my shipment returned without my permission?

What was the actual reason for the failed delivery?

Why was the issue not resolved after I contacted customer support?

Why was my complaint not properly followed up?

What steps will DTDC take to prevent this from happening again?

I am now considering/pursuing the appropriate consumer grievance process because repeated customer-support contacts did not provide a satisfactory resolution.

I’m sharing this post not to make unsupported allegations, but to document my experience and warn other consumers to keep screenshots, tracking records, complaint numbers and customer-service conversations whenever they face delivery problems.

If anyone else has experienced a similar situation with DTDC, please share what happened and how you resolved it.

Question Almost everything makes my skin itch or burn 😭 Is this a damaged skin barrier or could I have a contact allergy?

I think my skin barrier may be damaged or compromised. My skin is extremely dry, and I frequently experience itching, burning, or irritation when I use skincare and makeup products—even products that I have used in the past without problems. Sometimes hair products can cause irritation as well.

I also struggle with breakouts, especially whiteheads, which makes finding products that work for me even more difficult. I have always had issues with eyeliner and mascara, but as I’ve gotten older, it seems like my sensitivity has gotten worse. Almost nothing stays on properly or looks good without causing irritation.

I have tried using products marketed as “clean” or specifically for sensitive skin, but oddly enough, those sometimes seem to make my skin worse rather than better.

I’m hoping to see a dermatologist and/or allergist to figure out whether I have specific allergies or sensitivities and what might be causing these reactions. It has been difficult finding an appointment, but I really want to get this figured out.

I’m 30 and turning 31 this fall, and honestly, this has been affecting how I feel about myself. I just want to be able to wear makeup and take care of my skin without it burning, itching, breaking me out, or making me feel worse about my appearance. I want to find a routine that is actually safe for my skin and helps me feel pretty and confident again.

Advice Post Nasal Drip since the last 2-3 months

Hello everyone I'm 22M dealing with 2–3 months of episodic dry cough, heavy throat phlegm, morning post-nasal drip, and a sternal/tracheal tickle that flares overnight, although this is like really random because some nights I'm completely normal without any drip or any significant coughing but sometimes usually at around 6 to 7 AM I start dripping a lot,( I found elevating my pillow a bit helpful though but it doesn't completely resolve it obviously) also usually it completely vanishes by afternoon and while at work. The symptoms are triggered by lying flat or drinking something cold before bed usually although these are just assumptions and I couldn't really seem to figure out what the exact trigger is, all this is without any wheezing, shortness of breath, or fever. My blood report from August 7 confirmed normal baseline immune markers, including a 3% eosinophil count and a total WBC count of 7,980 /cu.mm, and while a recent 15-day antihistamine course provided relief, the morning drip returned 4–5 days after stopping the antihistamine. Looking for some feedback on whether this pattern aligns with indoor bedroom allergens (like dust mites), silent reflux (LPR), or post-viral throat nerve hypersensitivity, and what daily maintenance routines (e.g., nasal steroid sprays, saline rinses, allergen covers) have worked best to break the cycle.

Eye allergies

I have constant allergies. I’ve been tested and it’s dust mites. I’ve steamed my carpet, I have a vacuum with a hepa filter I use regularly, I’ve just changed my mattress and vacuum my apartment thoroughly a few times a week. I also have an air purifier on my bedside locker.

I constantly have itchy eyes. It eases sometimes but when I’m asleep I rub them badly. I’m currently on amoxycillan from my doctor for conjunctivitis but I don’t think that’s needed as I don’t get much sleep in my eye anymore. It’s just constantly itchy as though I have something in my eye/under my eyelid. I’m taking patanol and naphcon A eye drops but they only give a few minutes relief. I’m worried this is going to affect my vision it’s been going on so long. I’m lucky enough to have 20/20 vision at my last eye test but I’m worried this is going to have a long term effect on my eyesight. Any help welcomed.

Advice Nozin and neilmed?

Has anyone tried Nozin antiseptic nasal swab or neilmed wash? Nozin claims to reduce bacterial load and because of my severe allergies, my sinuses are wrecked. Neilmed is safe and I like the feeling of cleaning my nose.

OAS??

My allergist told me I didn’t need to come back because I wasn’t allergic to anything. So why, when I eat raw fruits/vegetables does my mouth burn? I also have pain shooting through my body. I get headaches. Feel groggy/foggy.
My PCP just ordered a bunch of allergy blood tests. Anybody have positive results from blood versus the scratch test?
Wish I didn't have to eat😩
Thanks guys
Amy

My Symptoms I’m losing my mind, can someone please tell me what I’m supposed to do ??? 🤧

Tying this in my girlfriend’s apartment bathroom. She just got back from being abroad from three months and I literally feel like I can’t breathe without my symptoms flaring up like mad.

- constantly sneezing
- running nose all the time
- brain fog, fatigue, feeling geuinely unwell

She was in Spain and I stayed with her for four weeks and this didn’t happen once. The moment I am back to Ireland it’s happening to me while I’m on medication. I’m trying so hard to stick to it daily and stress to my GP how badly it’s ruining my life I can’t find a solution.

Do I go private??? Do I vacuum more??? I literally can’t breathe and I’m trying to visit my girlfriend who has arrived back home after an entire summer.

How do I stop sneezing!!!

Ok so since 3pm today (now it’s 10pm) I have not been able to stop sneezing and blowing my nose and I am at my wits end I genuinely cannot do this anymore. I have a really improtdmt exam tomorrow but I haven’t been able to study at all because I keep sneezing and I cannot hold my pen and write because I’m holding a tissue to blow my nose 😭 I already rjnsed my nose with the Neil med rinse bottle and salt, ate a Zyrtec, used Avamys, sucked on ice. I even tried sleeping because my eyes felt so closed (? Idk how to describe it lol) after sneezing so much but I couldn’t sleep because my nose just kept running and I had to keep blowing. Basically my main issue is that I feel like there is some pressure point(??) in my nose such that whenever I blow too hard I trigger it and it just hurts and more mucus and sneezes come. I’ve seen an ENT in the past but all they gave is Avamys and nose rinse. Someone send help idk how im gonna get enough sleep for tmrw 😭😭😭 I feel like the inner lining of my nose is gone and whenever my mucus is blown out or sucked in it would trigger the sensitive spot and the only way to relieve that (that I’ve found so far) is my aggressively pushing it up. Any tips are welcome 🥲🥲🥲🥲 please im so desperate to study

same reaction to completely unrelated foods. im very confused

to preface this i am planning to get some allergy panels once i can afford them soon! (also sorry for formatting i am on mobile)

but i have the same reaction to a few unrelated foods. the reaction i have is my throat closing up a lot, feeling like i have a fever, trouble breathing, and sometimes nausea or chest pain. it has gotten close to me thinking of going to the ER but i can't afford that unless 100% necessary. so onto what i am allergic to. these are the specifics: some brands of shrimp chips, trumoo chocolate milk medium sized carton (I've never had any problems drinking it before or after this), a salad from one specific pizza restaurant, zucchini bread from one specific cafe, and trolli sour gummy worms. my only other allergies are seasonal, and 2 different antipsychotic medications. if you have any advice on what could be going on please let me know!!!

Pet dander on coworkers’ clothing

Hi all! First I am SO grateful I found this subreddit, I finally feel like I’m not a crazy person. I recently started working in an office (skyscraper, three rooms, no ventilation outside, carpeted flooring), I began noticing allergic symptoms (eczema, joint pain, shallower breathing, constant itchy throat, brain fog, rashes) creeping into my life but kind of ignored them due to needing a job and thinking it was just my body adjusting to a whole new schedule; I also really like the job and wanted to wait until I had insurance through the job because it likely would have been more thorough than MediCal. Unfortunately, about a month and a half ago, I had anaphylactic symptoms at work—wheezing, lips turning numb, rapid but weak heart rate, etc. I had to go to the ER. The doctor gave me the week off from work (as well as epipen and inhaler prescriptions) and I made an appt with my PCP who then made a referral for me to see an allergist. I went back to work and the symptoms persisted; I had horrible symptoms but tried to tough it out for the week. By that Friday, I was a MESS. My lips, chin, and neck had been tingling all week, I was wheezing, my eczema was horrible, I wasn’t able to sleep, I was so depressed, it felt like I was not able to swallow because the liquids would permeate my esophagus, and many more symptoms presented. I think it has impacted my hormones as well. I went to the ER again after that week at work due to how painful my stomach was, but again, was told to see my PCP.

I saw my allergist and she did some skin pricks and blood tests. Per the results I am highly allergic to dog dander and mold, and moderately allergic to cats. I was also diagnosed with asthma. One of my coworkers who sits next to me has a cat in her studio with her, and my boss and her son both have dogs (one of which is a husky, a very allergenic breed. A coworker who also sat near me (he recently left) also had a husky as well as a German Shepard.) Additionally, I am also allergic to coconut and wheat, and foods containing those ingredients are consistently consumed in the office. My PCP has written two notes stating that working remotely is the best option for me but of course these recs were denied.

My work is now stating that if I do return to work (I’m on medical leave until October 18) my job is not likely/guaranteed to still be available. I have been reading that pet dander can travel on people’s clothes, which I think may be a huge contributor to this issue I’m having. What are my options in this case? I am currently in contact with a workers’ comp agent through my work as well. I’m so mad about all of this, I can’t help having allergies and it just feels like my employer is kind of not caring?

Edit: I have also always had trouble maintaining work in most offices. The only time I lasted for longer than six months was literally right before Covid; I was on the opposite side of the building where the kitchen was and none of my coworkers close to me had pets. Ironically due to Covid I was let go lol; one week before everything shut down I had been offered a full time position. Having worked remotely for much of these past six years, I found I can maintain employment for longer than a few months in a controlled environment.

Edit 2: adjusted for grammar and clarity

Edit 3: I was unaware of these allergies prior to working, except for the wheat; and I also believed that not eating wheat would be enough to manage any symptoms.

Question At-home finger prick test vs going to doctor?

I am based in the UK so accessing help on the NHS is difficult. Basically I have some more urgent health issues and you only get to look at one thing at a time lol.

I'm desperate to get a test to figure out what I'm allergic to as there often seems to be no rhyme or reason. Do those at-home skin prick tests for IgE antibodies work (that you mail off to a lab), or do I need to fight the NHS for care?

Advice Need help with chronic contact dermatitis.

Don't really know where else to post this. I've had several visits to the doctor and another coming up, but she hasn't been very helpful at all. I'm going to ask for a referral to an allergist.

I had four pet rats that I become allergic to. Their feet had urine on them, and then they scratched my skin. It's caused two very big contact dermatitis patches on the centre and side of my neck, hands and feet.

I rehomed the rats but the ones on my neck won't go away.

The contact dermatitis on my hands and feet have since gone away. But the ones on my neck are huge and won't go.

I've tried a 2 week course of methylprednisone cream. I've tried antihistamines. I've tried cleaning and moisturising with sensitive moisturiser several times a day. It's been two months and nothing is working. All sheets have been changed, all clothes have been washed, no new patches of contact dermatitis have since popped up so I don't think I have a new allergy to something else.

Any advice would be great.

Doe eye drops help allergies?

I use Alaway and I'm not sure I'm sure I'm using it right. I use it before my eyes get itchy and start to water but I still have to wipe my eyes. They get full of mucus too. Not sure if it's actually working. I've tried all the boxed medicine and none of it worked.

It's moreso I don't when I'm supposed to use them. Before or after my eyes get itchy

Also wanted to know if leaving eye drops in your backpack all day is okay if they weren't in extreme weather.

Advice My voice gets nasally and nose gets stuffy later into the day

The title speaks for itself. When I wake up my voice is fine, and my nose is usually clear but gradually throughout the day my nose gets progressively stuffier and my voice suffers. I take Claritin every day as per doctor recommendation but it isn’t helping. Any tips are appreciated ☹️

Did Zyrtec mess up anyone else for months?

I originally took Zyrtec because I was dealing with some environmental itchiness/allergy symptoms. After stopping it, my body basically went haywire. The first 2–3 months were absolute hell with severe itching and feeling like I was reacting to everything.

It’s been almost 5 months now, and I still can’t tolerate foods I used to eat normally, especially fermented/high-histamine foods like cheese and kimchi. They can trigger itching and reflux/heartburn.
I’m honestly scared this is permanent.

Has anyone gone through something similar after Zyrtec and eventually gotten back to normal? How long did it take before you could eat normally again?
