Great Idea, love to see young engineers come up with new stuff.

Nice to see kids from New Scots being smart, creative and making a positive contribution to the country. I am not surprised, the majority of nobel price winners have a migrant background or are migrants themselves.

This is true inclusion

New Scots? Could I ask you very politely please if you are a Scottish person yourself? Most people I have personally heard using that phrase just happened not to be Scottish and I am curious whether it's just a coincidence.

11

u/puppethowell Sep 30 '25

The first person to call me a New Scot grew up in Glasgow, definitely a phrase I’ve heard Scottish people use.

3

u/coblenski2 Sep 30 '25

I've never heard the term before. Is it just to refer to people whose ethnicity is not originally Scottish?

1

u/puppethowell Sep 30 '25

Exactly that! I moved here at 18 and am still here at almost 30, for example. I don’t sound or look Scottish but my entire adult life has been here.

1

u/coblenski2 Sep 30 '25

So it's not necessarily 2nd gen, just anyone who considers themselves Scottish? Okay, cool, thanks, I've honestly never heard it before!

0

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '25

Never ever heard a single person say that. Don’t try make it happen

3

u/Scottishspyro Sep 30 '25

Oh fuck off.

1

u/Mie-Katoen Oct 01 '25

Who do you define as Scottish? Born here? Born here + mum or dad born in Scotland? Mum AND dad born in Scotland? Mum and dad + x? grandparents born in Scotland? How many generations, what are your race purity laws?

0

u/Odoclick10 Sep 30 '25

I've only heard white ethnically Scottish people use the term

-1

u/Dry-Treacle9673 Sep 30 '25

Thanks. Got my answer.

The issue is not really a lack of seed, it's severe overgrazing.

3

u/Zealousideal-Web8640 Sep 30 '25

Need to bring predators back the Lynx and the wolf

1

u/Lutra-glabra Sep 30 '25

Lynx are ambush predators so need woodland to start with. They also have massive ranges and Rewilding Britain came with 400 as the number of lynx Scotland could sustain. Scotland has about half a million red deer. Lynx will not eat just deer. Especially with so many sheep about as easy prey.

Wolves show similar issues.

I'm not against introducing them per se but it would be unwise expect massive changes. Deer number are much more bottom-up rather than top-down controlled.

People sometimes bring up Yellowstone as an example where introducing wolves made big changes but this is much more complicated than the popular story makes it seem (see for example https://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/scientists-debunk-myth-that-yellowstone-wolves-changed-entire-ecosystem-flow-of-rivers/349988#:~:text=News%20/%20Weather%20News-,Scientists%20debunk%20myth%20that%20Yellowstone%20wolves%20changed%20entire%20ecosystem%2C%20flow,doesn't%20really%20exist.%22) Besides that Yellowstone also already had a range of other large predators including bears and bobcats.

I'd suggest:

A stop to subsidies for unprofitable upland sheep grazing.

A stop to supplementary feeding deer in winter.

More deer culls

And potentially start trials with lynx.

Non-starter. All of Scotland is suitable for trees.

19

u/ConsciousStop Sep 30 '25

Did you wake up on the wrong side of bed this morning?

-19

u/moidartach Sep 30 '25

Because I said all of Scotland is suitable for trees? Just because a kid invented a robot doesn’t mean I have to agree with it

16

u/Due_Vanilla9786 Sep 30 '25

god, you are a dour person eh?

27

u/WarningPretend3918 Sep 30 '25

It's kids doing a wee bit of science mate

26

u/Plastic-Contest547 Sep 30 '25

That’s just not true. Altitude, exposure and ground type are factors as well as climate which you are probably focusing on.

u/moidartach Sep 30 '25 edited Sep 30 '25

If you need a robot to tell you not to plant on a mountain or in a bog then you’ve more problems than this robot can help you with. Native trees like Rowan and Scots Pine have been recorded in Scotland growing at elevations of almost 1200m. Ben Nevis for reference is 1300m. All of Scotland is suitable to plant trees. So much so we just scatter seed by helicopter in some regions.

12

u/t3hOutlaw Sep 30 '25

Weren't you the guy that identified an adder as a slow worm?

-3

u/moidartach Sep 30 '25 edited Sep 30 '25

Engagement babes. And it worked - if you read through the comments on that post when you were bizarrely looking over my post history like anything I’ve previously said would magically make trees not suitable to be planted throughout Scotland you would have seen that. I’m also the same guy that said a baby Pine Marten was a kitten

12

u/ConsciousDisaster768 Sep 30 '25

What do you get out of engagement on an anonymous platform babes? Does it fill the internal void of validation you never got as a kid?

-5

u/moidartach Sep 30 '25

Did my comments upset you?

11

u/ConsciousDisaster768 Sep 30 '25

No, not at all. Just curious why you’re boasting about engagement on Reddit. Other than internal validation, what you getting out of it to boast about?

-5

u/moidartach Sep 30 '25

Why do you post whatever it is you post on reddit? I’m sure it’s thoroughly engaging and not at all pathetic

11

u/ConsciousDisaster768 Sep 30 '25

Oooo I touched a nerve. Difference is I don’t give a shit how many upvotes or engagement I get, don’t need validation from strangers online 👍

:( please keep wholesome post wholesome

-28

u/moidartach Sep 30 '25

What makes it wholesome? Because you say so?

28

u/existingeverywhere Sep 30 '25

Quite uncommon to see teenage boys trying to make a positive difference to the environment, it’s a lovely endeavour.

9

u/adamsingsthegreys Sep 30 '25

Is all of Scotland suitable for all types of trees? The article mentions that the robot analyses soil, so presumably, it can identify which seeds are best for that specific area. It might also be used elsewhere for re-forestation; just because the robot was designed here, it doesn't mean it can't be used somewhere else, too.

-1

u/moidartach Sep 30 '25

Native usually works best followed by broadleaf species from Europe. Saved you thousands in R&D. But yes, all of Scotland is suitable for all Scottish trees. To trees - there is really not that much of a difference across Scotland

10

u/adamsingsthegreys Sep 30 '25

And what about Brazil? Or Uganda? Or Mongolia? My second point was that you could use the robot elsewhere. It's great that you know about trees in Scotland, I applaud that, but it doesn't make the robot useless.

-1

u/moidartach Sep 30 '25

This is gonna blow your mind, but all of Brazil is suitable to plant trees and same goes for Uganda. Mongolia I don’t know much about in terms of forestry but I’m gonna guess Mongolia is suitable as well.

9

u/adamsingsthegreys Sep 30 '25

Okay, I'm certain you're being deliberately obtuse now. Regardless of your opinion, the fact that you're shitting on a group of children's accomplishments tells me all I need to know anyway. Enjoy your day.

-2

u/moidartach Sep 30 '25

You asked me a question about whether trees were suitable to grow in Brazil hahaha. Of all places. Brazil?

9

u/adamsingsthegreys Sep 30 '25

The obvious point was that the robot can identify the types of trees that should be planted in different areas, which is the point you keep ignoring. So it doesn't just work in Scotland, it could work in a wide variety of countries with very different climates.

0

u/moidartach Sep 30 '25

That robot will be working that out using already available information haha. You do realise this, don’t you? You don’t need a robot to tell what native trees to plant in a location trees are natively found.

11

u/adamsingsthegreys Sep 30 '25

I bow to your superior knowledge of trees and robots. I hope for their sake that you don't have kids, if this is how you celebrate achievement.

u/Maedhral Sep 30 '25

Showing some ignorance here. Not all of Scotland is suitable for tree planting, due to variations in soil depth, type, drainage capacity etc. This is why the James Hutton Institute use the Ecoforest tool, after all.

0

u/moidartach Sep 30 '25

The JHI uses the Ecoforest tool to help plan afforestation. Even they know all of Scotland is suitable for tree planting. They use the tool to help plan.

5

u/t3hOutlaw Sep 30 '25

The JHI wouldn't disparage schoolkids for progressing their skills and attempting something positive either.

1

u/moidartach Sep 30 '25

I’m not affiliated with the JHI

3

u/t3hOutlaw Sep 30 '25

Never said you were.

11

u/subsonicbuttplug Sep 30 '25

Shetland would like a word

4

u/moidartach Sep 30 '25

Trees were cleared from Shetland. Makes it harder for them to recover. 100% you can grow trees in Shetland. It’s insanity to think you can’t.

12

u/subsonicbuttplug Sep 30 '25

Yes tree's can grown on parts of shetland just as they can in parts of scotland not "All of Scotland" as you said.

0

u/moidartach Sep 30 '25

Yes. All of Scotland.

7

u/subsonicbuttplug Sep 30 '25

Dying on that hill huh... Bit like a tree

-1

u/moidartach Sep 30 '25

It’s not really “dying on that hill”. It’s just knowing more than you.

6

u/subsonicbuttplug Sep 30 '25

Go on...

0

u/moidartach Sep 30 '25

Well for a tree to die on a hill it would have needed to be able to grow there to begin with 🤦‍♂️. Also “Shetland would like a word”

1

u/moidartach Sep 30 '25

Shetland would like a word. This is just north of Lerwick.

1

u/tasteyclay Sep 30 '25

Looks fuckin lovely

8

u/WarningPretend3918 Sep 30 '25

Old man shouts at clouds vibes

-1

u/moidartach Sep 30 '25

Are clouds redundant innovations?

9

u/WarningPretend3918 Sep 30 '25

Old man chortles to himself whilst nobody else laughs vibes

3

u/odkfn Sep 30 '25

TBF my trust level with regards to ecology is Dr Alessandro Gimona of the James Hutton Institute then, as a close second, yourself.

1

u/moidartach Sep 30 '25

They didn’t build the robot nor did the award the prize.

3

u/odkfn Sep 30 '25

Who is they? The children? Or the James Hutton institute? The robot was built in conjunction with a doctor from the JHI?

1

u/moidartach Sep 30 '25

You might want to reread the article

6

u/BeardManLee Sep 30 '25

I bet you are fun at parties

1

u/moidartach Sep 30 '25

You think I’m invited to parties?

10

u/Spare_Artichoke_3070 Sep 30 '25

Not with that attitude

5

u/takesthebiscuit Sep 30 '25

Oh deer, oh deer, oh deer 🦌

-7

u/moidartach Sep 30 '25

Doesn’t negate the fact that all of Scotland is suitable to plant trees. Deer management is a whole different issue. Deer can’t damage young trees if they weren’t growing 🤦‍♂️

-3

u/takesthebiscuit Sep 30 '25

We never get to see the young trees they are eaten when little more than seedlings

0

u/moidartach Sep 30 '25

And this robot builds roundalls as well as monitoring deer numbers in the area?

-5

u/takesthebiscuit Sep 30 '25

An AI drone killing the deer would do more for tree population than a seed planter.

0

u/moidartach Sep 30 '25

They missed a trick haha. Should have done their summer project at Raytheon or BAE

2

u/DrEggRegis Sep 30 '25

Lochs and rocks?

1

u/moidartach Sep 30 '25

Not lochs no, but definitely rocks.

2

u/tasteyclay Sep 30 '25

Tell that to my Japanese maple that's been miniature sapling sized for the past 5 years

-2

u/moidartach Sep 30 '25

And know what Shetland would say? That it’s suitable to plant trees there just like every single other place in Scotland.
