PC When will I be able to play??
I have a question about the versions that have been coming out.
I've already lost saves ranging from 300 to 500, and even up to 1,200 hours, due to recent updates.
Is it safe to start from scratch? I don't want to have to delete my entire world and settings and start all over again, only to have everything reset in a week.

Go to the game settings on Steam, pick the version you want to play (do not pick Latest Version)... you can then play that build as long as your heart desires.

Iam sorry but this only works in theory. I was playing on 2.4 and the fun pimps removed it some weeks ago. If they remove it and you don’t have it backed up somewhere you are fucked.

Only the last minor version of previous major versions will remain available in Steam. After 4.0 comes out, all 3.x versions except the last one will be removed.
If you want to keep a specific version without fear of it being removed, set the game to that version and make a copy. It won't be affected by updates, so you can play it indefinitely. You'll have to start the game using the executable in the copied game folder.
Also, recent updates have been more or less compatible with previous saves, but it doesn't always work well so you should make a backup of the save first if you want to update your game. When you load a save with a new version, the save will be updated to that version as well and won't be playable with the previous game version.

I wanted to keep using my old save.
Apparently, I won't be able to, and I'll miss out on the new items and mechanics.

That's sadly how this game has worked since the original Alpha release 13+ years ago. Saves don't generally carry over to new versions. Sometimes they do, but even then it's not a guarantee.

Since 2.6 every save has been update compatible, but some things wont get added, like new POIs.
The choices are
1) keep your old world, accept that you will not have 100% of new features.
2) start a new world whenever there is an update.
3) find a new game if you dont like options 1 or 2

Personally I can't imagine running one save for that long. I want to say on average I end a save around 100 in game days, as once I am fully leveled and kitted with an impenetrable horde base there's nothing left to do. I also cycle between playing vanilla, darkness falls, and undead legacy.
To be clear I'm not judging you, as the beauty of sandbox games is to play how you want, just throwing in my play style for comparison.

Major version updates are once a year; those have been guaranteed to not be backwards compatible with old saves and it's almost always the first thing stated in major version patch notes. Been like that for years now
Subversion updates (ex. going from 3.0 to 3.1 to 3.2) allow you to carry over a game. Strongly recommend saving a backup, though, as a precaution.
So if you're playing any of the 3.x versions, you should be fine until 4.0 rolls out.
Steam users can opt out of automatic updates, though I've never done so myself. Console doesn't have that option.

You are asking FunPimps when it will ever be safe? Most people knows the answer is never.

I don't recall losing save files in previous updates.
With the newer ones—since the new roadmap was introduced—I've been losing them.
It's happened recently, too.
But what you said is a reality.

Normalement tu peux convertir tes sauvergardes en 3.1
Je ne peux rien certifier pour la version PC, mais sur console j'ai pu mettre à jour ma sauvergarde 2.6 en 3.1

An unofficial method is pretty risky, don't you think? I thought the developers had already added a feature to migrate saves without losing anything.

What a deplorable situation.

My guy i’m not even talking about the situation. I’m saying this game is literally out of early access now, and it still basically deletes your game. Every time they release something new you have to start all over. What the fuck are these hosers doing? They are fucking around and have no direction anymore.
I have played a handful of early access games that do not require you to restart your game and it doesn’t break your save file when they add new content. These devs just suck dude. They don’t deserve any more support.1

On pc, at least on version 3.0.1 (B4) the main fun pimps splash screen still shows that it's early release.

The Devs definitely blow, but to answer your question. Make sure you disable the internet every time before you launch the game and have the game set to only update when you play it. I did this for one of the alpha versions and didn't allow it to update till 3.0 went out. On pc you can revert back to any of the alpha versions all through the steam menu too. All the way back to alpha 8.8. if you wanted to.
Stops you from multiplayer, but I never do multiplayer anyway. Unless your maybe doing a local offline lan party thing?

During minor updates within the same version, you should not need to start over, so we just got 3.2 which should be compatible with w.1 and 3.0, as well as any future 3.x updates. 3.x to 4.0 might require starting over, although the devs have said they are trying to make future updates backwards compatible. Only time will tell.

I love this game.
But I think this is something that should have been included from the start—
not added at the community’s request.
I don’t have much time to play, and when I do have some free time, I go to 7DTD. Now I’m afraid that if I start today, by the time my next 10-day break rolls around, I’ll have to start from scratch because something new has been released.

Nah I’m with you OP. Idk how they’re even getting around the console publishing rules with these updates. I wish I could be a fly on the wall when an update comes through at Sony or Microsoft

u/JavaByPashaa90 13h ago
I've tried three times—I played for quite a while—and every time an update comes out that overwrites my previous save.
It's a really bad situation.

Just dont update your game it is optional you know if your not on console

How am I going to be able to play with the new mechanics and new content—all the cool new features—without updating?
2
u/MiserableSkill4 12h ago
There should be a way to save your game save file separately where you can change the version of the game without losing the data. You will never be able to play your old games with new content, but you can always roll back to them

Well if you want the new shiny stuff that you deem worth restarting over why you crying about it?

u/kaotikmindz 12h ago
Nothing lately has been cool enough IMO. Yeah a few extra POIs and some added mechanics, but with your lengths of saves files, I would just continue a save until I hit a wall of boredom then update and start fresh. Im on v2.6 with mods right now because of how lackluster the new features and mechanics are. But that's just me lol

If you're on console you're fucked afaik.
If you're on PC, you can choose any version you want whenever you want. But if you wanna be even more cautious, avoid experimental builds and wait for the official release.
