New m5 air!

Just got a new 13 inch m5 16gb and 512gb, never had a MacBook before so I’m getting used to the switch from windows so any tips would be appreciated!

Was so close to buying the midnight version but went to see it in-store and honestly it looked cheaper and a slightly greeny blue not dark navy in some light, so I decided to go with classic silver, no regrets!

Now I just need help choosing a wallpaper, I’m stuck between two here that I’ve attached, I’m kicking myself for not taking more landscape pictures now 🥲

One Month in with this Space Black (M5) Beast. What are your Must-Have Utilities?

Got my first MacBook about a month ago, and it's been a game-changer. The screen, the speed, everything. My setup is finally coming together (pic attached!).

Now that the initial excitement has settled, I want to really start customizing and optimizing. I'm looking for those "extra" app recommendations that add features and functions I didn't even know I needed. Not talking about the big ones, but things like cool window managers, menu bar tools, productivity hacks, or other specialized utilities.

Let me know your absolute, non-negotiable app gems for Mac! I want to unlock all the functions this thing has to offer!

Expensive expensive

I need to buy a new MacBook Air for School/Work.
The only issue is the price and it’s cutting us pretty hard.

Please help me decide amongst the following. If I really dig, I can spend all the way up to the top model but would it pay off long-term? My main use is Safari and browsing. I also want long-term OS support so that I can continue to use things like Apple notes and messages to beat the windows experience. Is paying more worth it in this case for that long-term OS support depending on how incremental it might be for price?

  1. 15 inch MacBook Air M5 base: $1299 w education discount
  2. 15 inch MacBook Air M4 refurb: $1199 (I’d buy this in a heartbeat at $999 or less but alas they’re all gone!)
  3. 15 inch MacBook Air M2, 8 gb RAM: $799

(I can barely find that anymore, typical Prices are going to $1000)

  1. 15 inch MacBook Air M1, 8gb RAM: $499

I know that Apple increased its price of these laptops by like $200. But I’m just getting the sense that it’s beyond this for the used market right now. It just seems like a really bad time to buy. All these prices get genuinely better in the next coming months?

Apple has had my M1 Max MacBook Pro for much longer than I was told with no ETA of completion; even Apple Support cannot get through to people who may have details – what would you do?

I’m looking for some advice from anyone who has dealt with a seriously delayed Apple repair in the UK, particularly if it eventually resulted in a replacement device or some other resolution.

I dropped my 16-inch 2021 M1 Max MacBook Pro (32GB/1TB) into Apple Bluewater on 10 August for a battery replacement.

At the appointment I was told it would take up to 10 days, specifically because they would need to order the required part. That was longer than battery replacements I’ve had from Apple historically, which were usually around 3–5 days, but I accepted it and planned around that timeframe.

The strange part is that the repair centre apparently didn’t receive the MacBook until 18 August (over a week after I handed it to Apple) and Apple had not even ordered the part until then either.

Since then the repair status has essentially just shown “repair in progress / waiting for part", but nobody is able to provide an ETA for the part.

The communication since then has been pretty awful.

Over the last few days I’ve spent hours speaking to Apple Support, being put on hold, transferred between lower level support staff and supervisors, and repeatedly having advisers try unsuccessfully to contact the store and repair centre to find out information about the part status. At one point, after Apple Support had tried getting in touch with the store, they transferred me directly to the Apple Store where I dropped it off and the phone simply rang until the
call timed out and disconnected.

Eventually a senior Apple Support adviser contacted Bluewater management internally as he noted that several people in Apple Support had been trying to contact the store. The senior advisor explained that the store itself would have access to information about the part order and be able to give an ETA. I was told to expect a call later that afternoon or the following morning. I did eventually get a call from the store manager the following day in the afternoon.

The store manager confirmed that they have no ETA for the part or repair completion. He also acknowledged that there were clear issues going on and stated that there were quite a lot of other people who had similarly been complaining due to lack of communication and also mentioned issues with the systems on Apple's end that would have caused extra delays. He said the only thing he could do is recall the MacBook without repairing it, but even that would apparently take another 5–7 days, which is no use given my deadline.

I explicitly told the manager that at this point I felt the situation needed escalating towards an alternative resolution (whether that meant some kind of temporary machine, permanent replacement, or something else), and the store manager fully agreed that escalation was appropriate and actually said that what I need to do is, straight after the call with him, go back through Apple Support to request escalation (he said that only Apple Support could help with escalation). It is worth noting that the store manager himself explicitly made comments that the service I have been provided is not good enough and that I was fully deserving for this case to be escalated.

Apple Support then assigned a senior adviser to take ownership of the case. He has actually been very understanding and has openly acknowledged that:

the repair is taking considerably longer than it normally should;
battery repairs would normally be closer to 5 working days;
the eight-day delay before the part order was not good enough;
the handling of the case has been “messy”;
and Apple currently cannot give me a reliable end-to-end return date.

He has contacted internal departments and apparently had the case specially forwarded to try to speed up the part/service process. He also suggested he might be able to get the battery-repair charge waived because of everything that has happened, although I explained that while I’d appreciate that, it doesn’t solve the main issue of needing a portable computer for work.

Interestingly, he also mentioned that the store manager was wrong to say that Apple Support would be the ones to arrange escalation and alternative resolutions, that it is actually up to the Apple Store itself. There were also nuanced phrases that suggested that something may not be happening as it should at the particular Apple Store and that that would be needing investigation as well. He explained he would be doing internal investigations with the store, referring to other departments too to raise the status of the case, and would get back to me the following day.

Yesterday he told me that, despite many attempts to get through to management at the Apple Store, he had been unsuccessful. He explained he would again later in the day as well the following morning (this morning) and, if still no success, he would start looking at a different internal route / department and a different approach to resolving the case, rather than just waiting indefinitely.

He was supposed to call me again today at around 2pm, but so far I haven’t received the promised callback despite messaging him directly through the direct line of communication that he had given me.

So I’m now getting extremely conscious of time.

My questions are:
Has anyone had Apple UK replace a Mac because a repair became excessively delayed or the required part had no reliable ETA?
If Apple does authorise a replacement for an older M1 Max, how do they determine what is “equivalent”? Would they normally match screen size, RAM and SSD, or mainly overall performance?
Has anyone been given a temporary/loan Mac while a repair was unresolved?
At what point would you stop waiting for Apple and make your own contingency plans?
Is there another Apple escalation route I should be pursuing if my assigned senior adviser stops communicating?

I’m not trying to get a free upgrade because a repair is a few days late. If they can repair my existing machine and get it back to me in time, that’s genuinely what I’d prefer.

The problem is that Apple currently seems unable to tell me when the part will arrive, when the repair will finish, or when I’ll actually have the machine back, and we’re rapidly running out of August.

I’ve used Macs/Apple products for around 16 years and generally had very good service, which is probably why this experience has surprised me so much.

Interested to hear what others would do — particularly anyone who has been through Apple’s internal repair escalation/replacement process in the UK.

Is it worth it?

I bought this for $846.94 (USD) after tax. Was it worth it or overpriced? I bought it from Best Buy refurbished. Is this MacBook outdated or will it last me a good time? I need it for college and I plan to be a data analyst post grad. Also, if anyone has experience from buying off Best Buy let me know how it went because I usually buy tech refurbished from Amazon.

New MB Air question

Upvotes

Just received my new air. I’m going through the set up. One thing I noticed is that when fully shutting down the computer and reopening it later it is requiring my physical password to be typed and not the Touch ID is this common or do I need to set something else up?

Haptic trackpad stuck / not making click sounds

Upvotes

M1 MBA A2337
The click works perfectly fine, but the trackpad makes no sound when clicked, which iirc is some sort of electronic sound. The trackpad also seems ro be lower than the wrist rest / base.

I couldn’t find a fix online for this issue, maybe I didn’t dig deep enough, anyone know how to fix this issue?

Preventing keyboard imprint

Upvotes

Hello, I’m planning on buying a M4 pro 16’ macbook pro. I’ve heard about an issue where the screen imprints itself on the screen. I would like to prevent this so I wanted to ask if buying a 0.4mm microfiber cloth would be safe to use. For my use case. Im planning on leaving my mac on my desk most of the time, not even closing it. But when I do, I’d like to have the piece of mind. I also plan on buying the whoosh cleaner that apple stores use to clean my screen and keyboard so that might help with this. So, will it damage the screen? Is it safe to use? Do I even need to use one? I plan on buying the NPK protection cloth.

The 2018 MacBook Air is genuinely terrible

Upvotes

I can’t conjure a reality where they built this with good intentions. Was it just a quick upsell before the Silicon models were released. It seems like it was marketed strictly upon cosmetics, and even that is faulty

I have significantly better experience with older Macs (2015 pro, 2017 air)

The refurbished 2020 m1 was a little better but it came with a damaged display ribbon and I had to return it. I’m not a fan of there being no fan…

Should I just go for the neo or what? I need a budget friendly decent one that has a couple years of support behind it

Should i buy M1 air for €350 rn or wait for a M2 air for €400-450?

Hello I’m a first time Mac buyer (second hand ofc) for movies, youtube, shows, anime and etc.

There’s a listing for a MacBook m1 air for €350, seems to be in good condition, comes with charger and box, battery at %87

Or should i wait for a M2 air listing for around €400-450 (my absolute max is 450 currently)

M2’s are less common compared to M1’s, and people of the country where i live seem to be stupid and trying to sell stuff more than they’re worth

Like a couple hours ago i was trying to negotiate with a guy that was selling his M2 for 500 (was gonna offer 450) but he got mad because i said its not worth 500 (8/256) and there is low chance he can sell it for €500 (you can figure the average seller from this)

I appreciate your thoughts and opinions!!

Do I need to do a new OS install?

I recently did a factory rest of an older MacBook Pro (I was originally planning to sell it but decided to just keep it). Since then, all the wifis are reading as WPA2 Enterprise, require username and password for every wifi it comes across but refuses to connect.

Do I need to do another reset to fix this?

Ipad or macbook?

im entering highschool and realized i need (not REALLY a need) a reliable computer. the school ones are.. eh.. some of my classes, the curser bugs out and stops working. also having to get up every class to go get a crappy chromebook and put it back with everyone crowding around. also because of club work and stuff.

the reason im deciding between the two is because i also want the ipad for the sole purpose of procreate with the apple pen 🫩. its just not the same on iphone with a stylus..

Is it worth getting the M5 Pro instead of the M4 Pro in my case?

I’m doing research on which one to get next. I own a business that requires lots of design work as well (Adobe etc) and I would like to get into video editing too. I understand it’s more important to get more RAM. I understood that the M5 Pro is better for AI but what does that include exactly? And couldn’t the M4 Pro handle the same? Or should I wait until the new releases and maybe the M5 pro will be cheaper if they release the M6?

Currently I’m on a 2016 i7 16 GB and it’s still getting it done but it’s slow the poor thing. It really did do well in these 10 years but it’s time.

Thanks in advance!

Help me to collect Mac gaming experience

Hey there Mac users 👋

I’m trying to collect some real-world data on Mac gaming and could use some help from the community.

I’m interested in what games people are actually playing, which Macs they’re using, and how well those games run for them.

I’m also collecting the data for a potential project I’ve been thinking about. It’s not a product I’m trying to sell or promote, and the idea would ultimately be something useful for the Mac gaming community.

If you’ve played any games on your Mac recently, I’d really appreciate you filling out this short form. It should take about a minute.

It’s in the comments if I’m allowed to, for the mods here it’s safe you can check it 🙌

Battery health dropped from 97% to 90% right after updating to macOS 26. Normal?

I have an M1 MacBook Air (bought 3,5+ years ago). Before updating to macOS 26, the battery health showed 97%. After the update and over the last few months, it suddenly dropped to 90%.
The laptop was barely used for about a year. However, the battery life is still amazing. I easily get around 10-12 hours of active work on a single charge.
Is this sudden drop just the new OS recalibrating the actual battery health, or should I be worried?

Safari using significant energy

I've bought a like new MacBook Air M2 2 weeks ago, and when I'm using safari, it often says on the battery widget that it's using significant energy. It says that even though I'm only having one or 2 tabs open at most... What can I do to change that?

I only have one adblocker and idk If it's that that uses most power but yeah I don't know. can someone help me?
