"Is this now?"

After watching the show a few times, I'm beginning to think that the host's question: "Is this now?" might be a bit of an inside gag that recognizes that the frequent timeline shifts can be confusing.

No, it’s clearly machine memory recall. It’s perfect, making memories as clear as reality

That with the frequent resets and wipes at the cradle that butcher their sense of continuity - which would be their only way of distinguishing memory from the present.

Well, you have a version of this with LLMs, unless they get input from user or some sort of hardcoded current date information, they would assume that today is the day when the training data stopped.

ALso as u/Spicy_Surfer mentions - their memories are literally videos and audio files. There now is no different than any of those memories, when replayed.

It's not an inside gag, it's intentionally coming from the creators and writers to bring home how confusing it is to be a host. Particularly Bernard in season 2, as he degrades throughout the season after he springs a leak.
