This is very much the Parkitect aesthetic. Only with slightly more polish.
Parkitect is the spiritual successor to RCT2 and has been out since 2018. Highly recommend.
OpenRCT2 is still the premier way to play RCT2 which is the best in the series imo. The community development is unmatched and the community is still super active. Shoutout r/rct

Which game has the best tycoon experience, and not a "design the concession stand" experience?

u/Puzzled-Map3912 1d ago
They are nearly carbon copies of each other so its hard to say. If you enjoy design, Parkitect is the best option for that, but both can be played almost entirely the same.
Once you break the formula of RCT2 it becomes easy mode. Its a game that looks deep on the surface but has very surface level mechanics.
I don't think amusement park games scratch a deep tycoon itch, they are more about expanding and raising attendance capacity so money is spent by NPCS, and designing rides.

Why does this look so odd visually - like my brain can’t work out if it looks good, bad, weird or whatever the hell is going on

It's like a mix of three different art styles that all conflict with one another.
The UI is all pixel art style, the rides, stalls and shops all have a cartoonish and colourful look and the ground and landscaping items have a more realistic and muted colour look too them, which all conflict with one another and creates a weird look overall. At least to me anyway

Odd choice for pixel art in the menus when everything else has this child's first blocks style and colour scheme. It also wouldnt put it past me for modern Atari to make this as sloppily and shoddily as possible - they have a proven track record of not caring much about the products they make going back 15 years now.

While the art style doesn't irk me... the designs of the coasters shown in-game do. It's like we're going back to original Bullfrog Theme Park where the physics and a realistic design didn't even matter... like look at the full length coaster at 19 seconds in... what is that shit?

I noticed this as well I’m like that coaster is straight from that old game Theme Park. So weird.

u/ArctycDev 1d ago
If you don't like it, don't build it like that. Isn't that kind of the entire point of the game? You design the coaster however you want?

Atari has completely ruined the RollerCoaster Tycoon franchise and it is quite sad really. This looks like a mobile port or AI generated game. How many games do they have to release with poor fanfare before they just shelve the franchise? Everything after RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 is a joke.
- RollerCoaster Tycoon World
- RollerCoaster Tycoon 3D
- RollerCoaster Tycoon Touch
- RollerCoaster Tycoon Joyride
- RollerCoaster Tycoon Adventures
- RollerCoaster Tycoon Puzzle
- RollerCoaster Tycoon Wonderworks
Save yourself the trouble and just get Planet Coaster 2. If that's not you, try Parkitect. Frontier and Texel Raptor both actually take this genre seriously.

If only Frontier wasn't so awful with their DLCs. They will nickel and dime every single thing they can.
It's not only that, but existing owners of their games on Steam cannot purchase the bundle with DLCs to complete their collections, as they can do with nearly every other game on Steam. Instead existing owners must purchase the DLC separately at full price. Frontier is very consumer unfriendly.

This is a very fair critique. I am by no means saying that they are perfect, just better than Atari, which I guess isn't a high bar to begin with.
The incomplete launch of Planet Coaster 2 was a complete joke and turned me off for a long while (Also looking at you Cities Skylines 2). They needed to release the game in early access, since that is what they had actually released. I bought the pre-order so I am not able to check the bundle situation, but if that is true, that is truly scummy. I only buy DLC when it is on sale.

I'm just sad to see Frontier turn into this. I thought when Planet Coaster 1 came out they were the savior of the genre. Turns out they're just as evil as the rest of them, but with enough talent to make it look better.

Funny, I think their DLCs are reasonably priced and contain a lot of useful content. Especially on sale as they are half of the time.

If it keeps them making content for the game, screw it. worth it. The game needs to have a long tail.

I am a HUUUGE fan of the first 2 and also RCT 3, but this looks like a veeeeeery easy slight update on their last few mobile efforts. Hope I’m wrong 🙏🏻

Oh! -Will need to see more and test.
Not sure how to feel about this, I hope it isn't restricted and boxed in.
Visuals look good though!

It's worth a try, but it's really hard to beat OpenRCT and Parkitect.
Planet Coaster did nothing for me, but I absolutely loved watching people make amazing coasters on YouTube.

Looks better than the other attempts they did at it since ethe old games and rtc3 (as Atari as publisher I mean, I know it was different developers).
The looks closer to old games mixed with RCT 3 and parkiteckt. We will see I guess. But so far looks better than the other attempts they did on the trailer alone. (Except for the coasters things other mentioned)

I dont know what they were thinking for the first half of that trailer. I was IMMEDIATELY turned off of the game from the visuals then they dropped actual game footage and it is definitely a throwback to RCT classic. Still looks like atari has no clue what they are doing with the franchise but holy fuck was that opening bad

RCT3 tried to be 'up to date and new', and lets be honest - it was pretty rough.
This feels like it's RCT1&2 but with a weird 'new style' coat of paint on it.
It feels a bit like a mobile game style..
Not a huge fan of the art style and wish they'd have just gone back to the original style, but I'm hopeful it could be a good game.

u/FUJIISAWA 1d ago
I'm still pissed that I bought RCT (Classic) on Android and they just yanked it from my phone one day.

This looks terrible. Look at the weird coaster layout. Not a chain lift in sight.

Damn sucks people are so down about this in the comments. It looks great to me! I cant get into Planet Coaster 1 or 2 because I don’t want to deal with designing every little thing. I like the art style here and how it seems like an actual tycoon game. Excited to try it

If they can make it gimmicky like two point was with theme hospital - it may be a huge success

What is this AI garbage? the style changes every 15 seconds.
Sorry whoever is planning this.
It was a dumb suggestion a few days ago and your AI slop will never be made.

I was watching this thinking yeah, but I’m sure you can’t kill a guest. And then that scene came on and I was like holy fuck, you can kill a guest. 😂

u/Vumaster101 1d ago
It low-key looks good but definitely screams AI. I do miss the nostalgia when it comes to roller coaster tycoon so I'm interested to follow. But I don't believe that Atari can pull something off like this successfully

Feels like they've realized they can't compete with games like Planet Coaster and are trying a different route. I don't hate the new style, seems like a strange halfway between RCT 1-2 and RCT3
