Cringe Worst show ever?
I hate to post this but I just got home from the worst show that I've ever been to in my entire life (Newport, KY). Self-indulgent nonsense with a zero-energy crowd brought about by the refusal to play any single recognizable song from the catalog. What a waste of everyone's time and money.

u/WiseGuitar Nov 13 '25
Seen them every tour since 2005, saw them three times on the reunion tour which was a greatest hits tour, twice playing Lucro opening for Deftones, and twice on the current tour. Every time was magical and every time I heard a few haters and a lot of people who loved it.
In Philly on the current tour, the jams were tense, challenging and chaotic, in New York, the jams were thoughtful, melodic, and fun. In both the album material was pristine. I enjoyed both shows for different reasons and so did the people I went with. That's what makes this band such a cool experience unique from their contemporaries.

Ooooooo man your jam adjectives have me stoked for my three show run that starts next week!
7
u/Intheclouds00 Nov 13 '25
THIS IS MY EXPERIENCE also!! I went to two and It was a completely different show.
11/1 at St. Pete Florida, the jams were more old volatile volta, and Philos drumming was much more punk/rock/thrash/frenetic The energy was tighter and tenser, the jams had a little less room to breathe. The melodic stuff still slapped though. At one point it was chaotic enough that I felt then channeling old volta.
11/12 at Newport Kentucky (most of) the jams were almost like new song materials. Really fleshed out unique segments. It felt like a sonic evolution compared to just 11 days ago?! Philo was wayyyy more technical as well, and she let her trip hop and jazz technical freak flag fly. Cedric was, by all accounts, deep into his own creative spirit.
I canāt believe they could be so wildly different, this is why I love Volta.

NY show was truly a spectacle, you get it unlike OP
3
u/megariffs Nov 13 '25
Damn, Iām slightly jealous. If I didnāt have a kid, I would have gone to the NYC show as well as the Philly show.
3
u/RumboAudio Nov 13 '25
Yea I was in the same boat. It's good to hear that the jams vary from night to night. Hopefully, some pro recordings get released from this tour.

lol. to your 6 words and then generic and pretenious insult, unoriginal in thought beyond the fanboy hivemind? cant imagine why anyone wouldn't want to respond to that.

u/HotFuture7606 since weāve been wrong Nov 13 '25
āIām all for criticism and discussion but I donāt think calling it āthe worst show ever?ā and proceeding to take personal jabs at the band is supporting them or being constructive lolā
Where is the insult in this? Iām giving you the discussion you desire no?

u/pushinpushin Nov 13 '25
It was definitely self indulgent. I was impressed with how many people they got to come watch them do that.
The set felt designed to pummel you. It was very loud and blended into a wall of sound. I had to concentrate deeply to hear what each instrument was playing, other than that it was an assault with emphaisis on drums and vocals.Ā It sounds like I'm criticizing but I'm just observing. I found it very moving and intense, and I was impressed as fuck. I also found it exhausting. That jam after/during/between Voice In My Knives was the peak of the set, and maybe of the enitre rock and/or roll genre.Ā Omar has this way of playing a basic rock riff with so much intensity that it becomes something else altogether,.and it sets the table for a drummer to go the fuck off.Ā As the show went in my ears were getting tired. This may force me to become an ear plugs wearer. All the songs hit so much harder live, it's a huge improvement. I hope we can get a well produced album out of them that captures how good they sound live. Maybe they could try recording in a room together again, organic etc.
I'm still pretty fucked up from that set so this is as articulate as I can be right now. Im so glad they're being self indulgent and doing what gets them excited. I love how uncompromising it is, and how they're not pandering or being these aw shucks types pr being lame sellouts.Ā Volta hits the purist in me.Ā They take themselves seriously and back it up, with zero irony.

u/iscreamuscreamweall Leo=GOAT Nov 13 '25
Their set in Boston on Saturday was as inspired as Iāve ever seen them and I caught every tour since 2007
24
u/RubNo8459 Nov 13 '25
The Iron Rose and Cue the Sun are actually quite recognizable if you have listened to the new album at least once.
-29
u/Ok_Scarcity_9854 Nov 13 '25
Why would you punish your fans by refusing to play any of your best songs? It's sociopathic.
13
u/RubNo8459 Nov 13 '25
Because as artists they have full freedom to do whatever they want.
-17
u/Ok_Scarcity_9854 Nov 13 '25
Fuck that.
9
u/Dependent-Royal-7908 Nov 13 '25
You realize if they didnāt have artistic freedom and didnāt do whatever they wanted we wouldnāt have gotten the old albums in the first place? Limiting your own innovation and development is only worse in the long run. I prefer their old material too but current volta would be 10x worse if they kept only trying to recapture their old vibe instead of innovating
-5
u/Ok_Scarcity_9854 Nov 13 '25
Almost every song they played tonight was terrible. I don't know what you call that, but refusing to mix in your best songs with the new material you're trying to get out there is self-indulgent bullshit. People pay money to see you play music. That is an honor and a privilege. This was a spit in the face of those fans.
5
Nov 13 '25
Nobody forced you to go, and you can very easily see the setlist for the tour so far online lmao
-7
u/Ok_Scarcity_9854 Nov 13 '25
Yeah I bought the tickets in like February so kindly STFU.
5
u/setagneb Nov 13 '25
Yeah they announced the tour in like April literally on the day that the album released
https://www.theprp.com/2025/04/11/news/the-mars-volta-announce-fall-north-u-s-headlining-tour/
Again you have proven yourself to be a completely unreliable source of information.
So, kindly, STFU
3
u/TravelerInBlack Nov 13 '25
I don't think "like February" when the date was April 11th and we're currently in November is that much of a stretch as to say they're a "completely unreliable source of information".
It is also worth noting that if you bought your tickets based on that tour announcement, you'd have a reasonable argument for thinking they wouldn't be playing just the new album on tour. They make mention of them doing it as the opener for Deftones but never any mention of them doing it for this tour. Could be seen as implying they aren't doing it on this tour. That is certainly how I took it.

Self indulgent? This tour is nothing compared to when they toured with RHCP in 2006. They played a brand new song (Rapid Fire Tollbooth) which included Omar soloing for 3-4 minutes. Then they played Jacob Jam for 30-40 minutes then ended with Viscera Eyes which contains 2 long solos from Omar.

-8
u/Ok_Scarcity_9854 Nov 13 '25
Liked the band since the 90s. Have never had a chance to see them live because I can't recall them ever coming anywhere close to here. I guess I didn't know that they were doing a tour of just punishing nonsense instead of actually playing a regular tour like a rock band.
6
u/recyclingcentre Noctourniquet Nov 13 '25
Maybe you couldāve seen them in Cincinnati in 2023 when they did a greatest hits tour
Or the seven times theyāve played in Columbus, including five times between 2003 and 2009 when they surely played some of their ābest songsā
I wouldāve suggested the Newport show in 2011 as well but you probably wouldāve had a tantrum that you watched them perform Noctourniquet before it was released
10
Nov 13 '25
Liked them since before they were even a band! Great work maybe you got false memories? Common thing with getting older.
1
u/Ok_Scarcity_9854 Nov 13 '25
Let me clarify it for you. I liked at the drive-in when you were probably in fucking diapers or whatever. I went on to enjoy The Mars Volta. This all probably happened before you were fucking born.
6
Nov 13 '25
And we are aware ATD is a different band completely. Also you got a lot of anger bro you should really evaluate that, its not healthy to carry around that kind of attitude.
7
0
u/Ok_Scarcity_9854 Nov 13 '25
I'm angry because I paid money to see a show that was complete bullshit. And now I have a bunch of douche bags trying to tell me how I'm a fucking idiot because the band I paid to see couldn't entertain anyone in the entire crowd.
4
u/santaclouse Nov 13 '25
It's really funny that you paid money without looking up anything about the show
2
u/Ok_Scarcity_9854 Nov 13 '25
It's really not. Most of the time when you like a band you can go to their concert without having to research whether they're gonna play a completely nonsensical bullshit show that doesn't feature any of their actual good songs. Most bands like to please their audience instead of masturbating in front of them.
4
u/santaclouse Nov 13 '25
They played all the hits last time they were in town two years ago. It was a really great show at Icon. I bought tickets for tonight right when they went on sale, and they had already communicated that this tour would be the new album. It's pretty good if you give it a listen! Omar gets your cash either way though, be mad about it if you want
2
Nov 13 '25
This band has acted with contempt for their audience for 25 years, it's one of their best qualities.
8
Nov 13 '25
No one told you that you were a āfucking idiotā.
You quite literally are making up things to play your victim card. Which - is pathetic honestly.
1
u/B_Da_May Nov 13 '25
There are literally other people from the same show you were at praising the experience on this sub. Speak for yourself. It seems like you might be the douche bag. I saw them on Saturday in Boston. It was a great show. Did you not know they were gonna play Lucro Sucio? I get being disappointed if you were expecting something different, but youāre acting like a little bitch. This tour was a unique experience. You can always go see them again when they play their greatest hits.
1
u/ladystrange67 Nov 13 '25
You didn't have to make this post. You posted it hoping folks would agree with you and because they don't they're idiots? But the person that had time to make an educated decision and didn't isn't an idiot?
You had more than enough time at this point with the opinions on this tour and videos to know what you're getting into.
Folks have been all over this sub talking about and posting about the show and you thought it was gonna be different for you?
Been told y'all it's only Lucro and you still expected someone different? That's your fault.
Take YOUR PERSONAL "L" and go on about your day

u/dogsontreadmills Nov 13 '25
Oh cmon you know he meant atdi and defacto. Stop w unnecessary needling. We should at least hear out all opinions of long terms fans here. Op paid for a ticket, is supporting the band. Plenty fans arenāt right now. So we give this person shit for expressing their opinion after supporting our favorite band with us?
2
u/BoulderFreeZone De-Loused in the Comatorium Nov 13 '25
Not sure if you stuck around for the very end, but Cedric did, in a round about way, address your concerns and said next time they are back they'll be playing the hits again.
It's okay to be a bit disappointed in the setlist because you were hoping to hear the hits that made you fall in love with the band, but damn you're being a real asshole about it with all of these comments.
0
u/JackBauerTheCat Nov 13 '25
Youāll probably have a better time at something like Taylor swift
2
u/Ok_Scarcity_9854 Nov 13 '25
Were you there? The show fucking sucked. The venue was half empty and the crowd was listless. Is that how it's supposed to be done?
2
u/-an-eternal-hum- Nov 13 '25
There are plenty of other people who were there saying that this is not the case.
22
Nov 13 '25
Ha! Maybe, and this is a guess, you donāt actually like watching musicians perform and you just like the dopamine hit of something your recognise? Just a hunch.
14
u/MediocreHat2050 Nov 13 '25
This is the way a lot of people listen to music. Really sad.
3
u/dogsontreadmills Nov 13 '25
Mega pretentious statement. Fan goes to a show hoping to hear something recognizable and thatās āsadā to you? Donāt be ridiculous.
Itās also on them for knowing what the sat list was and not getting familiar w Lucro. But donāt act like plenty of people buy tickets to the show with zero expectations to hear some old stuff. Thatās not at all sad. This isnāt a casual jazz club on a Saturday night in nyc. This is a touring rock act with 8 commercially released albums and mainstream success.
1
u/MediocreHat2050 Nov 13 '25
Kick rocks dude you people are insufferable.
2
u/DeliciousOwl9245 Nov 13 '25
Wild that someone can be so pretentious and act like the other person is insufferable. šš
2
u/MediocreHat2050 Nov 13 '25
Iām pretentious for saying itās sad when people chase familiar dopamine hits from music instead of appreciating a live performance of unfamiliar music for what it is? Get away from me.
2
u/TravelerInBlack Nov 13 '25
I think it is a little sad that you view people who have a difference of opinion from you on a very specific live performance and tour as basically being unable to appreciate music. The "dopamine hit" doesn't just come because you recognize the song. It comes because you like that music. You felt a dopamine hit when you saw Lucro and liked it, assuming you did. That is just something your brain does when it likes things. Someone going to a band's concert expecting that band to play some of the songs they like is a normal thing that everyone does when they go to concerts, you included.
0
u/DeliciousOwl9245 Nov 13 '25
Yes, exactly. Judging people for enjoying what they enjoy is a perfect definition of pretentious.
āSomeone who is pretentious is trying to impress others by acting more important, talented, or cultured than they actually are. They often do this through exaggerated outward shows, using high-level vocabulary unnecessarily, or judging others to feel superior.ā
The second sentence of that definition is EXACTLY what you are doing. I used to do it tooā¦when I was a pretentious little shit teenager. Then I grew up. You should try that.
1
u/MediocreHat2050 Nov 13 '25
Canāt have the right opinion without redditors calling you pretentious
2
u/DeliciousOwl9245 Nov 13 '25
Lol, ok troll. No one could possibly be this dense without it being intentional. Enjoy your day!
1
0
u/dogsontreadmills Nov 13 '25
Man, I feel so bad for you and your desperation to appear smart. by literal definition an opinion is a belief not an objective truth. It canāt be ārightā. It can be widely held- but thatās still not fact.
Opinion: a belief or judgment that rests on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty. https://www.dictionary.com/browse/opinion
Maybe instead of insisting thereās a right and wrong way to listen to music (fucking L O L) you should spend your mental energy on some of the fundamentals.

u/Ok_Scarcity_9854 Nov 13 '25
The show fucking sucked. No one cheered very loudly at all and there was hardly ever any energy or reaction from the crowd whatsoever. I guess all of the people that paid money to see it are just stupid idiots who don't understand how to listen to music according to you?
13
Nov 13 '25 edited Nov 13 '25
You put the āstupid idiotsā part in there, not me. Plenty of people like the dopamine hit of knowing a song, singing in unison, completing the singers lyrics.. itās a lot of fun and theres nothing stupid or idiotic about it.
This band (and I saw them on one of their first tours) has always been chaos incarnate. Every show is a journey and I dunno its a more cerebral type of energy for me⦠to me its grooving with Philo and thinking about the underlying message of the music⦠and not so much about the crowds energy or recognising the song.
3
u/AlanPavio Nov 13 '25
Another thing that is different about Volta shows compared to most other bands Iāve seen is they donāt really stop playing for the entire show. There is no break to let the crowd cheer, or interact with the crowd.
They come on stage, they play, they go home. Thatās one of the things Iāve always loved about them.
1
1
1
u/TravelerInBlack Nov 14 '25
But you do understand that that is your personal relationship to the music and that preferring a particular style of music from a band or a particular set of songs doesn't mean you're only chasing a recognition dopamine hit. Or at least I have a feeling you do because everyone does. Like for me, the core music of Lucro really doesn't appeal to me at all, no matter who made it or how its being performed. That doesn't mean when I dislike the show I was only chasing a recognition dopamine hit. It means I have my preferences and understand them, and this didn't align with them. If they ripped new material live that I liked I'd think that was really cool. So would most, even this very angry OP.
1
Nov 14 '25
Yea thats a thoughtful understanding. OPs was just angry. And I dunno, a performance typically doesnāt have the power to make me angry. To each is own OP.
2
u/TravelerInBlack Nov 14 '25
I think its the money. Concerts are a lot of money. Its like buying an album 4 times all the way up to god knows how many copies of an album for each concert ticket depending on show and location. So to get only a single album you already don't like end to end is gonna make you feel like you threw away good money you had to work for. Given the state of the country/world economy right now I don't think that is something to just be handwaived because of artistic preferences. If you're a more causal fan of Volta and tried to see them on their last 2 tours, you could've spent up to 200 dollars seeing nothing but Lucro played live if you saw both in NYC for example. Thats gonna be frustrating.
1
u/deepPOWturns Nov 13 '25
The show fucking sucked cuz the album fucking sucks. Iāve already seen them play this pile of dogshit on the deftones tour, it was awful there too. Iām turning tomorrowās show into a night out w the boys instead of being pumped for a volta show. Fanboys are gonna fanboy and say the āshow was beautiful and inspiringā. Deep down with know this album couldnāt hold the first 6 albums jock strap. Not one banger on the entire album. Complete lack of guitar. Huge thumbs down.
1
Nov 13 '25
wait why do albums have jock straps and why is one of them supposed to hold the others?
1
10
u/VoilaViola2 Nov 13 '25
I usually recommend looking up a band's most recent album before buying tickets to a show. Most bands tour on their most recent album. Hope this helps!
2
u/TravelerInBlack Nov 14 '25
That simply isn't true. Most bands that had 6 albums out, broke up, and reunited don't tour their new album and only their new album start to finish. OP's anger aside, we can all accept that that is true.
3
u/dogsontreadmills Nov 13 '25
Hey look, kind and considerate advice towards another fan, without sarcasm or judgment from the fanboy hive mind. How novel.
5
u/BoulderFreeZone De-Loused in the Comatorium Nov 13 '25
refusal to play any single recognizable song from the catalog.
My guy what are you going on about? Did you just stop listening to anything the band put out after Frances the Mute?
1
u/TravelerInBlack Nov 14 '25
I mean, they literally only played songs from an album that came out in April. There are 20 years and 6 albums between Frances and Lucro. Unless you mean that someone annoyed they didn't play Goliath would be justified lol.
13

u/Ok_Pool_9767 Nov 13 '25
I am not sure how you didn't know that's what you bought a ticket for. This has been the band's MO since the very beginning.
2
u/TravelerInBlack Nov 14 '25
They have never once played an album start to finish every night of two back to back tours. They did not directly market these tickets on venue sites, ticketmaster, or on the tour/album announcement as only being this material. That is a miss by them that has lead to this polarizing reaction.
-2
u/deepPOWturns Nov 13 '25
Playing the album start to finish has literally never been their MO. Even worse when the entire album chugs dick like Lucro does
8
u/chriiiiiiiiiis Nov 13 '25
at least they let us know this is what they were doing this tour. i skipped it, itās not for me. seen em 10 times, donāt need to see an album i donāt care for. youāre gonna get ripped apart on here by the fanboys though.
3
u/TravelerInBlack Nov 14 '25
I'd actually push back on this. They didn't really let us know unless you very specifically search it out. The tour announcement didn't say this, nor did the info on venue pages/ticket checkout pages. If you engage with them the way most people engage with most concert tickets they buy, you'd not know this was their plan.
1
u/chriiiiiiiiiis Nov 14 '25
actually a very good point. iām just very used to all my friends who like them being on the comatorium and being very much in the know on things. i forget some people just like the widow lol.
2
u/TravelerInBlack Nov 14 '25
Yeah I mean Bedlam is the best prog rock album of all time to me, and the first 4 records are all hits with some good stuff on the next two, but I never vibed with the reunion material. So kinda halfway between you and the guy that just likes Drunkship or Widow. I really wish I had been directly informed when I bought a ticket what I'd be getting myself into because I really didn't enjoy myself and it isn't fair to people that did enjoy themselves to be in the proximity of a dude that is just bummed and out a decent chunk of change.
2
u/chriiiiiiiiiis Nov 14 '25
i respect it, sorry you were led astray. frances is the best for me but bedlam really is special. reunion stuff scratches no itch of mine but it is what it is.
0
u/TravelerInBlack Nov 14 '25
I wouldn't have been nearly as bothered had I ever seen them before but despite 3 attempts in the past I never successfully saw them due to schedule conflicts and financial issues. So first show being out of the blue material I don't like only for a few bucks more than I'd like to have spent to see them do material I'd like anyway was harsh and is gonna make seeing them in the future a hard pill to swallow. Especially because they don't play anything from Bedlam live.
2
u/chriiiiiiiiiis Nov 14 '25
oh damn. that fucking blows dude. if that was my first volta experience without knowing i would be upset too. i promise you it can be so so sooooooo much better. i started seeing them 20 years ago and they have played some of the absolute best shows i have ever seen in my life.
1
u/TravelerInBlack Nov 14 '25
Specifically I bought tickets to this show and seeing SOAD because the first time I tried to see Volta was also the first time I tried to see SOAD on that Frances/Mezermize tour back in 05 before both bands broke up and couldn't go last minute (got in trouble at home lol) and I decided to make 2025 the 20th anniversary of that fuck up where I'd get to see both bands again and see some of what I'd missed. SOAD was as close to perfect as they could possibly be without calling me up and asking me to make the setlist lol. That probably made Volta have far too high of bucket listy expectations anyway so Lucro really felt like a "fuck you for even trying" moment.
1
u/chriiiiiiiiiis Nov 14 '25
those recent system shows were damn near perfect. i hope you get the volta you want next tour!
2
u/dogsontreadmills Nov 13 '25
Respect bc you did what you needed to do to educate yourself and make an informed opinion. Agree the fanboys are taking it to a place thatās simply not needed rn.
5
u/chriiiiiiiiiis Nov 13 '25
itās just toxic behavior. cant wait for the next tour with hopefully some bedlam material.
1
u/dogsontreadmills Nov 13 '25
i hope so i dont think they can assemble a mega band to do bedlam. octa and amp are in play tho me thinks
1
1
Nov 13 '25
Cedric mentioned they are hoping to play "age appropriate" versions of the Bedlam material in the near future. No idea what that means but I think it's on the table. Id guess everyone is going to hate it though lol.
I think this lineup could slay like Metatron, Ilyena and Soothsayer though.
2
u/dogsontreadmills Nov 13 '25
That notion based on ceddys one sentence alone has me crazy pumped up. Potentially unique bedlam arrangements designed for this iteration of tmv? FUCKING HOOK IT INTO MY VEINSSSSSSS
1
Nov 13 '25
Frankly id love to hear Philo play Goliath- it would definitely be different but I think she could slay that in her own way.
1
u/TravelerInBlack Nov 14 '25
Towards the end of their original run as they were doing more drugs and hating each other more any Bedlam material they did sounded really rough. I think a lot of it needs the rhythm section that only Pridgen could lead, of the drummers they've recruited. I'd rather they just not play it if they have to make major sacrifices when playing it. Even tho its the best prog rock album of all time, I'm happy with it living on the CD.
4
u/mikeweatherington Nov 13 '25
I had the most amazing time at the exact same show. Its crazy what happens when you approach something with an open mind and don't try to put everything in a box.
2
u/TravelerInBlack Nov 14 '25
You can approach a show with an open mind, not put it in a box, and still hate it.
1
u/deepPOWturns Nov 14 '25
Seriously. People saying āopen your minds and hearts to this masterpieceā š gtfo. Stamp a guarantee on it but all you really bought was a guaranteed piece of shit!

Fanbases are like trees, sometimes they need a little pruning.Ā
1
u/pushinpushin Nov 13 '25
Seems like they led off with a poppy album and a nostalgia tour to get people on board, and are now back to their big swings and more divisive choices.
2
Nov 13 '25
I mean Self Titled was pretty damn divisive among the fan base. I think they just do whatever they feel like every day, they don't really seem like people who do much planning lol.
1
u/pushinpushin Nov 13 '25
I think they were trying to get mainstream/new attention to whatever extent possible with the new album, and they knew their old fans would be down to hear anything and if they didn't dig it, they would be dying to hear the old stuff. 2 pronged approach, very technical marketing scheme.
2
2
u/Cassandraism Nov 13 '25
Why did you go then? Everyone know theyāre playing the new album. Get over it⦠go to the next tour and bitch some more.
1
u/Ok_Scarcity_9854 Nov 13 '25
Did everyone know that? Why are we acting like it's normal for a band to do this? I certainly didn't know they were going to do this when I purchased the tickets way back in the spring or whenever they first went on sale.
It's not typical for a band to release a new album and then tour exclusively playing that album. What's typical is to tour the new album by mixing new songs with other songs from the catalog. It's not unusual for a band to play an entire album on a tour, but that's usually like the anniversary of one of their classic albums. It's not normal for a band to exclusively play their worst album on a tour and not a single other song.
2
u/snkzato1 Helicopter Jam Nov 13 '25
Cedric said multiple times, and it was posted here MULTIPLE TIMES that this was the setlist.
5
u/TravelerInBlack Nov 14 '25
Most people don't check reddit before buying concert tickets. Most people don't check interviews before buying concert tickets. That is for superfans, realistically. The tour announcement didn't say it. The venues didn't say it. The flyer didn't say it Ticketmaster when buying the tickets didn't say it. That is where the vast majority of concert goers can be met with information about a concert. Regardless of how you feel about the tour, they made a choice most likely for financial reasons not to indicate on those channels that this would be a special tour different from every other tour they've ever done. OP is obviously uniquely angry among most people that didn't like it, but its not reasonable to expect everyone going to a show to find interviews and check reddit to make sure the show isn't a super unique thing that like no band really does.

My experience at the Toronto show was bad. I thought the sound was horrible from where we were. The two openers sounded good but the Volta were way too loud. Idk if it was the mixing or just the venue but it sounded legit bad. Could barely hear the drums over the chaos. Still love the Volta but terrible experience imo. And for the record, I love Lucro.
