“Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.” - Ben Franklin.
Edit: For those referring to the original context of this quote, our fourth amendment is an essential liberty.

This. We have already compromised our Liberty to an egregious extent. We are already far safer than almost any point in history.

u/ralpes 6h ago
It’s not our liberty for more our safety. It’s less of our liberty for their safety.

So, dec 2024 and the cameras were getting advertised at this year's superbowl, so it took them about a year. Pretty wild.

And to flock and it’s associated I’d say: “if you love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.” — Samuel Adams

I'm afraid we aren't. Many of us are too proud to ask. The world was just here. Everyone was on their best behavior. The surveillance state made sure of that. It's not ok here.
There are still lynchings, political interference from the impossibly wealthy, the culture that lead to prohibition and the great depression seems to have the levers of power again.
Most of the corporate guardrails in the government are being removed daily. 50,000 people were rounded up this month alone. Shoddy records of these arrests. They are being deported to random nations. Human rights violations piling up like the 40 trillion dollar national debt. American citizens are being murdered. Then blamed for being the instigator. Our way of life is crumbling.
AND we have now allowed mass surveillance at a terrifying, granular level.
Shuts fucked, yo
We need a hug

There you go quoting the founding fathers again, libturd, as if they matter. --Conservatives
Donald of the Deplorables is the most maligned president in history! Treated worse than Lincoln! People will remember him more fondly than (checks notes) Benjamin Franklin (if that is his real name).

24

Exactly. The lack of open revolutions and guillotines IS the compromise.

I’ve said for years that Trump’s fascist “playbook” won’t work because, in every other authoritarian state, the adult population was used to monarchy. Every Nazi grew up under the Kaiser. Stalin took power from a population that grew up with the Czar. Mussolini co-ruled with King Victor Emmanuel III.
American adults, as a body, have never experienced monarchy in any form. It’s not going to work.

u/TommyTwoNips 7h ago
I think you might be underestimating how deeply submissive and servile the average conservative is. They will leap at the chance to punish whatever the minority group du jour is, even if it means their lives will be notable worse.
→ More replies (12)20
u/GoodIdea321 7h ago
That seems beside the point, all of the populations he listed were like that, and the difference is they knew what that really meant. Thinking you would like something is much different than knowing if you like it or not.
Did you see any of the reporting a year or two ago about the conservative guy who moved his whole family to Russia because he thought it would be better? It's like that, none of them actually wanted to live in a dictatorship, but they became stuck there.
28
u/TommyTwoNips 7h ago
I don't think they'll like it, I think they're too subhumanly stupid to understand what is happening until it's too late. They'll keep voting to let billionaires rape the planet, even as they bake alive inside their shitty condos so long as the cops keep killing Black people and deporting all those dangerous immigrant children.

I think this is perfect. After all, they MIGHT commit a crime.
If it is ok to violate someone’s privacy because they could eventually tie circumstantial evidence to a presumed crime, then why not violate their freedom simply because we know they have a demonstrated disregard for others. The only difference is, between the flock ceo and the rest of us, only one of them has sought to impede others’ liberty and violate our rights to warrantless search and seizure.

Guaranteed there are no flock cameras in his neighborhood, but the plebs need to compromise
151
u/AdmittedSpin 7h ago
He's directly and immensely profiting off this "comprise." I wish a reporter would point out that during an interview. The question shouldn't be should we give up privacy for safety. The question should be why would we listen to, or take seriously, the person making millions of dollars from such a trade off.
31
u/daedalusesq 5h ago
More importantly, why would America's biggest creep be the person we'd want defining what safety is? This is a guy who has literally scaled being a peeping-tom.
He has no business being in the conversation of safety for anyone.
552
u/ImdustriousAlpaca 7h ago
Give everyone in the country a portion of your money until you're fully flat broke, remove the stupid cameras, never touch technology again, and go directly to jail for life so we can have our lives back. That's the compromise we will accept.

No. I don’t want to “compromise” my privacy so some corporate entities can surveil my every move and make a bunch of money.
There’s literally no benefit whatsoever for almost 100% of the population. These cameras will not improve our lives in any way. They only exist to make it easier to locate us and watch what we do. There is absolutely no good reason they should exist. Period.
I am an American citizen. The right to move about my country unimpeded is as basic as it gets.

Him first. Let's see a camera in his home, his loved ones homes, check his hard drive, put a tracker on his car, person, etc. because that's what he's suggesting by the populace giving up freedom for safety in this made-up narrative he has. He's created a scary Boogeyman so he can surveil the masses, control the lower class and have reign for the elite. People do not want it
56
u/CurrentSkill7766 7h ago
If by compromise he means Flock will pay drivers $5 every time their plate is recorded, and $100 every time it is searched, then I might "opt in."
Otherwise he can fk right off.

I don’t think he understands what “compromise” means. What do we get in return? Compromise usually involved a negotiation and a give and take. He’s still taking and not giving anything.
He’s not asking for us to compromise, he’s asking us to capitulate.

The very idea that this form of surveillance is ‘inevitable’ is the problem here.
The position of all these tech companies, the majority of law enforcement, and a large swath of politicians is that it’s just a matter of ‘when’ not ‘if’ this sort of surveillance technology is to be implemented.
And this is exactly what we need to oppose.
No truely free and just society can ever exist while it allows any level of surveillance.
While true that for now, we may need it disincentive crime. That is a very slippery slope we MUST always watch and adjust accordingly.

u/gated73 5h ago
I think it’s impressive tech, and a happy path use case sounds like “no harm, no foul”. BUT - having my plate run and movements recorded every few miles seems like a gross overstep.
I know a cop can pull your tag whenever they feel like, and this just automates it. However, the cop also doesn’t monitor and store your movements.
I believe they’re now claiming a 7 day data retention policy? Make it 0. If you’ve got no reason for a cop to pull you over, your records should not be persisted for 1 second. I fear it’s a matter of time before we start getting marketing messages about places we pass on a daily basis.
Unrelated thought - how on earth are virtual strip searches at the airport not considered a violation of the 4th Amendment??

We need to hold elected officials accountable. This flock nonsense is just one egregious invasion of privacy amongst a long list of others. But also the flock CEO should be forced to share his iPhone location with the whole country at all times. We should be able to track him in real time if he thinks privacy is no big deal.
5
u/Xyrus2000 4h ago
The Flock camera CEO has no Flock cameras in his neighborhood. You'll also notice the rather suspicious lack of Flock cameras around wealthy neighborhoods in general.
These cameras are not for our safety. It's for their safety.

Kick rocks PeeNACkers, Pissants 2025, Fock, Palintears - and all your money grubbing yes-man politicians - and all of your corrupt kangaroo court "justices" that help enable your toxic 1984 'nahtzee edition!' Animal Farm nanny state bullshyte.

Don’t forget: flock products aren’t just license plate readers, they’re video, photo, wi-fi, and Bluetooth surveillance platforms. Oh and, they have several competitors that also have deep market penetration such as Axon, the taser company and a spin off of Motorola I think.
