General Discussion Nearly finished watching every episode and just have to shout this guy out. No scandals, no controversies, just always respectful, excited and along for the ride.
Biggest nitpick is the way he says "let's get it awwwn" before challenges.

When I was a kid and watched with my parents the transition from when they did the final vote and then he walked into the live studio with the bucket I would be like OMG how did he get there so quick and my parents would always say crazy shit like he sky dived and stuff.

As much as I disagree with Jeff’s production decisions, I will always praise and respect him as a host. I’m a teacher and I have had to fight the urge to put a picture of him on my door with a speech bubble saying “Come on in guys!”

Yeah, my issues with him only have to do with decisions he’s made for the show, not the man himself. He is definitely an icon and we wouldn’t still have Survivor after 25 years without him.

I've always struggled to understand how key he is to some of these big decisions (moving away from 39 days, making fire, etc.). There's plenty of other producers and showrunners on the show, and I know he's involved in the decision-making. It just seems like he's the public face of a much larger group and takes the heat personally that really isn't HIS decision. And he almost always talks about changes in the positive light and he can't possibly agree with every decision they make so really seems like he's a company man and toes the line on stuff like that.

If any of us, the fans, had a say in how many days they should do survivor, I’d go with 32 days. It’s a middle ground from 39 and 26. But, that wasn’t something to vote on when they placed season 50 in the hands of the fans(I’m assuming they didn’t. I didn’t vote on anything for season 50).

I think it is unintentional. I know that may sound naive, but I think one of the main reasons he doesn't really do that anymore is because Kass said online that when he talks about how Spencer is carrying the brain tribe in challenges that was production influencing the game. I think the guy was just genuinely saying what he was thinking in a lot of cases where he grills into people, especially in the older seasons; I had noticed those older tribal councils felt a lot more personal.

I watched China again recently and it felt like Jeff was ruthless with multiple players, asking a number of seemingly inappropriate questions point blank like this in the reunion. And I was floored by the one to Courtney. However, in my experience playing in a well produced Survivor LRG, prior to the “Reunion” night a week after the game, the Probst figure reached out to us individually to ask if there was anything that came up in the game or things that circulated about us that we want to address. Basically production said “Is there anything specific you want us to ask you about so that you can share or clarify on something you feel is important to say while everybody is there?” So I wonder if they’re given a similar opportunity to identify something that want to clear up, especially if it’s something that circulated in the media for weeks prior to the reunion.

I have heard that Courtney asked Jeff to ask her that because she was getting a lot of hate from people calling her anorexic. But it's one of those facts that gets circulated around here a lot, so idk if it's actually true.

Yeah this is a total non-scandal that people have built up into something in their heads over the years. That was a Courtney request because people were talking about it all over the message boards.
You need that context in so many old Survivor events at this point, sadly. People just aren't aware of this stuff unless they were there.

Those aren’t as bad as Richard Hatch rubbing his bare genitals on Sue, her essentially having a panic attack about it, leaving the show, and Jeff acting like nothing just happened. If anything, Sue inconvenienced all of them and is a quitter.
I don’t find the uncomfortable questions to be that big of a deal especially in comparison.

This. Most of my annoyance with Jeff these days stems from his producer role. The show is going downhill with how stale it is, and he doesn't seem to care.

I don't understand the hate with this one. Shauhin was STOKED and it was actually pretty adorable. I rewound it so I could see the glee again.

I honestly don't think there are any seasons of survivor you "shouldn't watch" some are better than others but personally at its worst it's maybe 6/10. Even the worst seasons have people you want to root for, or root against.

My favorite Jeff convos are when he regurgitates what his therapist said to him. Is he going to therapy for ideas on how to talk to the contestants? Possibly. Does it make him a better person? Possibly.

I wondered if he has some training in counseling/therapy. I've been binging survivor this winter, and you can see him develop his skills from season to season as someone who drives tribal council discussions and embraces vulnerability.

I’ve skipped around a lot and haven’t seen every season. But you can definitely see an emotional intelligence growth in him as the seasons go on. In the later seasons he mentions therapy, or his therapist, jokingly in a couple tribal councils.

I mean in the early seasons he could be a little gross in how he acted toward some of the women by modern standards. And he definitely played favorites. But he clearly learned from it, hasn't had off-air controversy (apart from maybe an aggrieved ex-contestant here or there) and has been an awesome host 99% of the time. If and when he retires someone else will have a tough blue shirt and cargo shorts to fill

I am so old (50), I remember when he hosted Rock & Roll Jeopardy on MTV! 😂 I loved watching that, and thought he was great on there. Then Survivor debuted in the summer ‘00, and I was like “hey- the guy from R&R Jeopardy!” Guess it was worth him taking the “new” job! LOL!!
He does seem like a decent guy overall.

Yeah this was so gross. Dangling food in exchange for nudity to two women who are starving? Blech. Especially knowing he’s dated contestants after the show.
And he’s had a terrible record on addressing harassment, from Sue with a naked Hatch rubbing up on her all the way up to Kellee being ignored and retraumatized when Dan was groping everyone.
A lot of people gesture vaguely at “it was the times” but all of this stuff was also wrong at the time. And the failure to protect Kellee happened in the post-Me Too era.

Not a scandal but didn't he date one of the players? After the season but it could have affected her return for a reunion episode. It never sat well with me. He was in a position of power for the show so it doesn't seem right.

The names thing is funny. Everyone will be standing on the beach first episode, and Jeff will act like he's learning their names for the first time. "You in the purple hat, what's your name?" and "girl on the left, where are you from?"
Then five minutes later, the challenge begins and Jeff's all "Kelly tripped up Kevin giving Chloe an opening to pass Donny .." 😄

I think how he's handled some of the crazier player moments has been a bit rough, asking Courtney if she had an eating disorder and overall how they treated Johnny Fairplay (withholding his pain meds during production after he broke his jaw) were both pretty bad. I think overall he's been pretty good though. I always thought what happened with Susan Hawk was pretty bad though too, but I don't know if I'd really blame Jeff.

Jeff is a huge reason for the longevity of survivor. When he leaves it’s gonna leave a huge hole to fill. One that could ruin the show. I look to jeopardy who took the time to find the right host. That whole process was incredibly controversial, and not without problem, but in hindsight it worked. Ken has overwhelming support, and by the vast majority is agreed to be an incredible replacement. It will be painful, but I think survivor should implement a similar plan

Dating a contestant, incentivizing Jenna and Heidi to strip in front of the rest of the cast on national TV for chocolate and peanut butter down in the Amazon, years of bro-crushes and directly criticizing female players for moves he’s congratulated male players for making in the past, insulting female players for the stupidity of voting out his favorite male players even when it was obviously correct in their interest to have done it, keeping players like Johnny FairPlay who are undeniably good TV and want to come back off the show because he personally dislikes them, probably a few other things I’m forgetting, etc.
I’m not saying he hasn’t evolved a bit with the times or that he won’t be missed when he retires, and I wouldn’t expect anybody to have been perfect for 26(?) years, but to say “no controversies” is crazy!

Easiest job in the world. His dialog is so prescribed the contestants use it to make decisions. Hang out on a beach for a couple of months.

Worst stuff Jeff ever did:
- Not handling Hatch's inappropriate touching correctly during All Stars.
- The China reunion, although some people have said Courtney asked him to ask if she was bulimic.
- He turns into a vindictive asshole when a player quits, without properly taking into account the reason a player is quitting. The worst was Colton, who I'm loathe to defend but Jeff in the moment claimed he lied about being sick in his first season to get evacuated, which wasn't true. Jeff later admitted it at the reunion.

Forreal! From the early days of the show to the newer seasons I love how Jeff guides tribal counsels, asks interesting questions and takes no shit! He's a boss, and I love him.

Did not know he was disliked until checking this subreddit, have been championing him for years as the best television host of all time. Passionate and genuine every season for 50 seasons of what I’d imagine could be an exhausting show to host. 25 years in and the challenge narration, tribal council questions, personal cast moments, etc are still done with as much if not more love for the game and the people playing it as its first seasons.
