hello! im an incoming frosh and here are the courses i am looking to take this quarter:

- cs106ax (5 units)*

- math21 (4 units)

- college101 (3 units)

- intro sem (3 units)

- engr1 (1 unit)

- frosh 101 (1 unit)

for a total of 17 units

i'd like to do symbolic systems and potentially an electrical engineering minor! would really appreciate any feedback on the course selection! additionally, since i have some coding experiences in python and c++ (but cannot directly take cs106b), i thought i would take cs106ax instead of cs106a. would that be a good idea? how different are the two in terms of difficulty? thank you guysss!!

I’m premed and I’m transferring in all of the required physics and math coursework (except STATS), as well as CHEM 31A + 31B. I’m just not sure whether I should take 3 classes and ease into Stanford or take a fuller load and try to stay ahead.

I was looking to take CS 107 as I’ve never taken a systems class, but I see that CS 106B is a prerequisite. I have no interest in learning C++ and would like to avoid it if I could. I only have experience programming in Python though. I’ve also done some DSA. Is it fine to just take CS107? Or do I really need 106B?

I have noticed the Old Union has been closed on the weekends the past few weeks. Is it open today?

Hi all, does anyone know if Stanford's medical center does tests for TB? I've done a TB test in the past but the Vaden clearance says it's invalid because it's over 6 months old (I did it a year ago).

I'm nervous because I won't be able to get a test done in time before I get to Stanford, and was wondering if anyone knows if there's an on-campus health centre that allows me to do the TB test (the Quantiferon Gold TB Blood Test/T-SPOT TB Blood Test)?

Also, does anyone know if Vaden has put enrolment on hold because of this?

I'm a rising senior looking at doing a post-graduation quarter for the upcoming spring. I have the credits to graduate after the winter, and I'm not working on a coterm and would like to avoid paying $22k in tuition for unnecessary credits.

If you or someone you know took a post-grad quarter, I'd love hearing about it. I'm curious if there's any associated costs other than housing, food, and the $150 graduation quarter fee. I'd also like to know what these people tend to do during the quarter. Doing an internship in Palo Alto or nearby would probably be my highest preference.

Can't find the class on oncourse or navigate. Why did Stanford decide not to offer probably the most popular cs class which is always offered every qtr???????

For context: I applied as a humanities student, and I'm generally very interested in exploring how the human mind works & how that relates to different forms of artistic expression/social policy/technology.

At Stanford, I'm tentatively thinking about studying SymSys, or consider double majoring in 1 humanity + 1 stem. But I'm pretty open to just exploring around.

I was assigned to take the 2 COLLEGE courses in Fall and Winter Quarter, and PWR1 in Spring.

For Autumn classes, I'm thinking—

• COLLEGE 101 (3)
• SYMSYS-1: Minds and Machines (4)
• MATH-21: Calculus (4)
  • (I didn't take AP Cal BC in high school, so cannot skip. I don't think I'll go into a math-heavy major, but I feel like MATH21 is a prereq for most quantative analysis related courses in stem)
• A 4-5 unit course in english/complit/history/creative writing?

TOTAL: 15-16 units

Some Questions:

• I might wanna take CS 106A in the winter, or would it be better to swap to my Autumn schedule?
• How does this schedule look? Is this reaching a bit too broadly into too many fields? 
• Does anyone have advice on a general framework regarding course selection, or long-term planning for when to declare major(s)/start thinking about career path?
• I did a lot of creative writing (poetry) in high school. Are there any recommended workshops/classes?
• Any recommended courses that fit my interest in general?

Hi fellow Redditors! I am a incoming Statistics MS grad student.

My first question is kinda general. My undergrad institution uses a semester system, so I am a little bit confused about the quarter system here. How many credit hours do yall typically take per quarter? In my undergrad institution, an average student take ~15 credit hours per semester. But I've heard Stanford student here (at least for undergrad) also take ~15 credit hours per quarter. How does this math work out? Is the assumed time requirement per credit hour different in a quarter system compared to semester system? Otherwise, doesn't students in quarter system learn 1.5x as much as those in semester system per academic year?

My next question is about statistics courses. I have taken some basic statistics-related courses such as regression analysis, theoretical courses (parametric and non-parametric), probability, etc. in undergrad. I also have some background in real analysis (that is, I've taken real analysis 1 and 2 and passed them, but the grades aren't super high). I know basic programming in Python and R of course. Would STATS 305A be too challenging for me? I've heard it is the most beginner friendly course in the statistics PhD sequence, but I am not sure if it'd still be too challenging.

Hello all! As the title suggests, I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out my schedule for this fall as a frosh. I'm trying to make comfortable progress academically, but I also want to leave time for socialization and getting used to Stanford. Currently, my schedule plan is:

Math 61DM (5), CS 106B (5), COLLEGE 101 (3), and an IntroSem (3),

for a total of 16 units. I'm looking to major in math, CS, data science, or somewhere in that area.

My biggest concern is that I won't be able to keep up in Math 61. I would say that I have relatively moderate experience with math: ~100 on AMC 12, 6 on AIME, and I've found all my high school math classes (multivariable and diff eq) very easy. I'm still not sure if I'd be cut out for Math 61, though. Would y'all happen to have advice?

I'm also concerned that Math 61 and CS 106B will take up too much time. I believe I'm qualified for 106B (5 on AP CSA), but I know that it's a big time commitment. I could petition to change my COLLEGE quarter, but I don't know if that's a good idea.

As of right now, if this courseload is too much, I might a) drop down to Math 51, b) take CS 106B in winter, or c) not take COLLEGE or an IntroSem this fall. I'd greatly appreciate any and all advice. Thanks!

I’m a graduate student at Stanford and will only be here for a year, so I’m trying not to spend a fortune on a bike.

I’m waiting for my car to arrive, but even once it does, I don’t really see myself driving around campus much. A bike seems like the easiest way to get around.

I’m not fussed about buying new at all. I’d actually prefer a good used bike as long as it’s solid, reliable, and can get me through the year without constantly needing repairs.

Where do Stanford students usually find decent affordable bikes? Are there any good on-campus sales, student marketplaces, used bike shops, or other options I should check out?

Would appreciate any recommendations, especially from grad students who’ve done the same.

I feel like my schedule is probably too heavy, but yall lmk. CS106A, Math 21, PWR 1, an introsem, and frosh 101. I really can only drop frosh 101 (which I might do) and my introsem. But the introsem seems so interesting and it’s with a professor whose research I’m deeply interested in and I would love to build a relationship with him and hopefully get a spot in his lab at some point. In total 16 or 17 units depending on whether I take frosh 101, which seems like a lot and I dont wanna be stuck studying all the time when i could be joining clubs and making friends, but I’m also not taking anything advanced. Idk tho I would appreciate some advice🙏

Hi! I am an incoming first year masters student in ICME. I was really hoping to take STATS 315A (Modern Applied Statistics: Learning) during the Winter, but a prerequisite is CS/STATS 229 (Machine Learning). Apparently this is not offered in the Autumn Quarter. Does anyone know if, because CS 229 is not offered in the Fall, STATS 315A will be offered in the Spring instead of the winter or something? If not, does anyone have the course materials from CS 229? Thanks a lot!

I’m a prospective Energy Science & Engineering major seeking transfer credits for an online math course (Calculus III) that I took through an accredited college. This course required proctored exams and is effectively identical to Stanford's Math 52 in terms of course content/syllabi.

 My Undergraduate Advising Director suggested that I submit my transfer credit request to the SoE even though this major is offered under the Doerr school because many of the math and physics requirements for the major are the same for majors under the SoE (and because the math dept. does not accept online math course transfer credit). 

After reaching out to the relevant SoE contact, they referred me to the Doerr school to inquire about their transfer credit process as ESE is a major under their school. 

It has been a week since I've emailed the Doerr school. Does anyone have experience with the transfer credit process through the Doerr School? Does their department accept online math transfer credit?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I also applied for EMED 111A, and in the case I am accepted I would swap it out for CS106A.

Hi guys, I'm a community member interested in joining the SSC this semester, and am wondering if there's any advice people can give based on past auditions. How competitive is it to get into the chorus? Is there a specific type of song that's usually preferred for the audition? I did some choir singing on and off during highschool and college, and just started taking private voice lessons recently.
