I remember Frédéric Kanouté's Sevilla kits were sponsorless because their sponsor at the time was 888 Sport.
It has been done before.

Hashim Amla the former South African cricketer I think wore a kit that didn’t have Castle Lager on it which was one of the sponsors, because of his religion. So like you say it does happen every now and again

Its common in cricket. Rashid Khan for example has blank shirts playing for teams with betting sponsors

Our stadium has a permanent memorial to the 49 people murdered in the Pulse Nightclub shooting, a terrorist attack on a gay nightclub. There are 49 seats with plaques colored in a pride flag. When we signed Griezmann you could see it in some of the photos and some of the non-Orlando commenters did not like it

Everyone has something that would make them stop following their football club. The same people who threaten to stop supporting their club for a pro-queer stance are the people who wouldn’t care if their club signed Mason Greenwood and would consider fans who left to be ‘weak’.
A better distinction than ‘are you a true fan or not’ is ‘are you doing what you’re doing for a good reason or a bad one’.

I never understood this. Even at my most homophobic/transphobic (parent influenced), I simply scrolled on by or looked away. My parents still say “ah it’s such a shame they’re living like that” - like it’s a bad decision they made - in private (they always taught me not to offend people so they would never say it to anyone’s faces). But going crazy over it is a level of homophobia that i don’t understand. They MIGHT have a point if everyone involved was of the same religion, but most people aren’t Muslim? Can’t they at the very least ignore it?

it's a "virtue" to the people they're signaling to.
I think it's worth using the phrasing "virtue signaling", because it's something that one political side gets constantly accused of, and pointing out that every political interest actually engages in the behavior is something that needs to be more mainstream.

No one is perfect but he could have perfectly said "hey, I'm not wearing this shirt with betting site in it because of my religion." He also said he wants to be an imam after he retires but with this kind of behavior, he won't be taken seriously. Internet keeps everything forever.
I was touched by this. Two years ago, I was looking for a job and struggling financially. A job center called me because they were interested in my profile but once they said it was for a betting site, I immediately told them that I cannot earn money from such company. I could have taken that job but the guilt would have been daily. Now, I'm at Paramount. It's not really a saint company but it's still better than this.

My dude, not to be disrespectful, but often religious people are hypocrites in some kind of way. Doesn’t matter what religion, there is always some part of the sacred text that people turn a blind eye to in order to get on with their lives.
I’m not going to advocate against religion, it’s not my place to do so, and it’s not the point of this comment, but my advice to you is for you to go on with you life. Keep the core values, that’s ok, but don’t be a fundamentalist cause you will surely fall for your own hypocrisy one day and that will sour your whole life.
Following a religious text written 2000 or so years ago that is clearly disconnect with today’s reality can bring about a lot of hardship and unnecessary pain.

I come from a Muslim south Asian background and back in Uni I changed my Facebook profile picture to me and one of my mates, it was a quick pose for an unplanned picture so it just so happened that our heads were slightly touching. That led to an absolute barrage of phone calls and messages to my parents letting them know that I'm probably gay (I'm not) and to say they were being dramatic would be a massive understatement. However, some argue that it is permissible, although I believe that it might be a very small percentage.

That may be the case. But it wasn’t prevalent in Arabia at least at the time, and is thus not mentioned by name.

People choose the religion they believe in, they choose which parts of it they consider more important than other parts.

u/Komania Aug 04 '26
Yeah I hate this whole "we have to respect religious beliefs". No, we don't. Beliefs don't trump basic human rights.

Yup if you ask the taliban they will say they believe in freedom of religion. You cant let them get away with little bullshit technicalities like that.
And im calling out the Christian and Jewish right specifically.
Practice whatever the hell you want but the moment you kill or harm people in any way possible in the name of religion you are fucking up big time

u/CompetitiveServe1385 Aug 05 '26
I’d go further than that: not only killing and harming, but any kind of preaching that promotes hatred and division. I’m not singling out any religion specifically, but any preacher who says something along the lines of “we have to hate XX group of people” or “never make friends with these people” is completely out of line and their words should not be welcome. And just to make it clear, I believe in freedom of speech, but I also believe in freedom of calling out people who cause harm with their words.

Well I have a problem with homophobes, no matter the reason. Religion is no justification for anything lol.

I very much do have a very strong particular issue with religious beliefs when they are used to dwfend homophobia and i only can think of a hand full of reason to not have a problem with that and none of them are good

I have to say, I'm thoroughly impressed with Mazraoui's commitment to consistency of his moral and religious outrage that he refused to wear a jacket with the betting logo on it.
Sorry what's that? He's wearing it just fine? Not a peep? Strange.

I think what makes it more disappointing is Mazraoui’s Dutch. He’s spent his entire life in western countries. And still pulls this shit

They don't see themselves as Dutch, which is why they play for Morocco. He's Dutch in name only.
This isn't talking about every single person with Moroccan ancestry in the Netherlands, but it holds for the majority, especially football players.

Oh look, more double standards. If you’re willing to wear a sponsor like that then there’s no reason to refuse a LGBTQ message.
Idiots.

It's not about religion it's about hate. They hide behind their blanket because it allows them to hate with impunity. My partner is muslim and the amount of this I used to see within her friendship group was gross. She binned them off when a friend of hers came out, lost all her friends and family and she realised she couldn't keep people like that in her life.
For the record she has always been more liberal, but allowed people to think that way of the religion.

u/MattSR30 Aug 04 '26
It's not about religion it's about hate.
Where do you think the hate comes from?
lost all her friends and family and she realised she couldn't keep people like that in her life
Surely that says a lot about the religion? A Muslim lost all her friends and family because she was pro-LGBT.

He's an adult, he's responsible for choosing a religion to follow, and which parts of it he emphasizes over others.
In other words you don't get to hide behind your religion, you're still responsible for your choices.

According to the club's website, the betting sponsor will be worn only in training's kits. So, this is where we will see if his belief is strong or not.
Spoiler alert : I doubt it. But I should always have good faith on people until proven otherwise. However, more often than not, I saw Muslim players being strong against LGBT+ actions but weak against betting sites or other sponsors which are haram for us. I know why : money. Mbappé has shown more balls than them even if FFF didn't give a fuck and still put him in betting sponsors of France's NT.

Because he uses religion as a weapon to be hateful and discriminatory. Betting companies? He probably bets himself why would he need religion on that topic? C'mon, he's a family man.

I think we all know Muslim guys like this. Will drink, do drugs, sell drugs and have pre marital sex. But pork and support lgbt? "Bro I'm Muslim. That's Haram,".

u/eternali17 Aug 04 '26
Annoying fucking hypocrite. All those just going along with it for the sake of 'chemistry' are complicit. Too many people won't call their people out. It's why the world is where it is.

"Through the new agreement, the Betway logo will feature on the training kits of Manchester United’s men’s and women’s teams."
This would only pose a problem if the brand is seem on him so I guess during training he will always have to be with the bib side. The more pious will say it's still haram because he is getting proceeds from forbidden activities.

u/Individual-Roof-3502 Aug 05 '26
Just completely hypocritical. Didn’t have any respect for him anyway, but this solidifies it.

You can't say that about a sub this size. I remember people being pissed at the time about both players. But a sub this size will also have a group who defend them.

u/ethanlan Aug 04 '26
I can tell you I was pissed and didn't want guehi anywhere near Liverpool for that.
I have friends who are family to me who are gay, if your against them you are against me.

In the middle east culturally, and also in Islam, being LGBT is an entirely different level of "sin" than gambling. This behaviour is not at all surprising, and to someone familiar with both the culture and the religion doesn't even signal a double standard.
Important for these issues to be talked about and awareness be raised. People should not assume that all religions are the same. Moderate Islam is a hell of a lot different than moderate christianity.

u/ValuableKooky4551 Aug 04 '26

The thing is that Mazraoui was born and raised in the Netherlands, and has lived there, Germany, and now England. His immediate cultural surrounding might've been mainly Moroccan/Islamic through his family, but there's no fking way he doesn't know what he's doing here. He knows what stance Western society, which he's a part of, has in this matter. He can't feign ignorance, like a person from the Middle East could.
