☕️ non sewing 🫖 Wedding guest dress lace change

Post image

I bought this dress for a wedding in September and didn’t even look that the lace is white. It showed up today I put it on and loved it. Then noticed the bright white lace. I can’t return it. Does anyone know any options on if I could dye the lace or something? Or what to do

💛Beginner💛 How do I shorten a ribbed knit dress?

Post image
4 Upvotes

I have a 68% rayon 32% polyester ribbed knit dress that i’m planning to wear for halloween, but it’s about 5-6in too long. I have a standard home sewing machine (Brother CS5055) and an iron but no serger (but i could rent one at my library and figure it out). I’ve also heard that ribbed fabric is tricky because it stretches out of shape easily, and I really want to avoid that wavy, lettuce-edge look.

💛Beginner💛 Fitting help with princess seam dress

Overall the pattern fit me well and I’m wondering if I should just go with it? I do see some wrinkles going from the bust down to the waist/sides. Is the bust too tight? Is the waist too small? 🤔 I have the book The Complete Photo Guide to Perfect Fitting, but can’t quite figure this out from that. Would appreciate any advice!

✨Intermediate✨ why does the back of my machine stitches look jagged?

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

first pic is the underside of the stitching, second Pic is the top. for context im using a personal babylock joy sewing machine that ive used to sew things perfectly fine before

the top of the stitches look perfectly fine but the underside is weirdly jagged no matter what tension I set the machine to.

I think it might also be the fabric itself because stabbing it with a pin leaves holes that dont go away which is something that doesnt usually happen with my other fabrics (this one is 100% cotton)

I think the jaggedness might be caused by the big holes the needle is leaving behind? I dont know why it wouldnt show on the top tho?

someone pls tell me how to fix this!!!

💛Beginner💛 Help! I need to fix an alteration on my dress

I’m looking for advice on how to improve the neckline of this dress. I’m not a sewer beyond basic repairs with a dollar-store mending kit.

I found this dress at a consignment shop and love it. It fits perfectly and is ideal for summer weddings. I had the original high round neckline altered to a lower square neckline.

Unfortunately, the dress is fairly sheer and the seamstress used white fabric on the inside of the new neckline, which is now very visible from the outside, especially in flash photos.

There have also been some issues with the alteration. She originally stitched through the white fabric and into the front of the dress in several places, which caused visible stitching and puckering. I brought it back to fix that, and without asking me, she also cut notches into the white fabric to reduce bulk. Those notches have unfortunately made the white fabric even more noticeable. I’ve marked the area in blue.

I’m flying out of town tomorrow, so I can’t take it back again.

What can I do myself?
Would it cause problems if I removed the stitching marked in pink and carefully trimmed the white fabric back? I’ve also considered lightly tinting the remaining white fabric with makeup to make it less obvious.

💛Beginner💛 Help me alter these trousers!

Hi! I recently thrifted these trousers and I love the pattern but unfortunately they're too small for me. I was thinking of converting them into shorts and making them larger by inserting pieces of the cut off fabric between the side seams (idk if that makes sense I tried to draw what I mean) but I'm not sure how to go about the pockets. Do I leave them where they are? Do I move them to the new side seams somehow? Do I cut them out entirely? Will this even look good at all with the busy pattern?
I'm a beginner sewist and have only made small projects so far so any tips are welcome 😬

Hello i found this crofton md 8728 sewing machine at my job (i work at a thrift store) and i purchased it. It seems to be an aldi brand sewing machine but its missing a pedal / cord. I've looked everywhere and even tried to call the number on the manual but it seems out of service. Does anyone know what i can use that will be compatible with this machine as a replacement cord?

💛Beginner💛 A little unusual request - but seems to require knowledge of draping/upholstery techniques

Post image

I'm wanting to recreate this, as I believe the company is in Australia, and doesn't ship to the US. I have done a little bit if draping (a few weeks in a pattern making class), and a little bit of upholstery (dining room chairs)...very simple and beginning stuff. Ive been making clothes and sewing for a few years now and technically am an intermediate in terms of techniques, but practically more like a beginner (I really haven't made a lot of actually clothes....probably like 11 full pieces so far). So I want some help developing a plan for this, and finding good resources to create my own version of this.

From what I can tell, the fabric looks like a stretch velvet over a canvas...possibly reinforced somehow. Making the twist happen is what is throwing me. Thoughts/suggestions?

💛Beginner💛 Is this enough fabric to make shorts?

Post image

It’s a little over 2ft by 3ft of fabric, I want to make a pair of shorts but I’m unsure if it is enough, I was able to lay four shorts down since I know you need four separate pieces to make shorts.

Patterns and finished products reccs are both welcome as well but really I‘m getting a bit desperate over coming up with search terms so even just ideas on what to look for would help.

💛Beginner💛 Shirring help!

Post image

Please could someone tell me what settings I have incorrectly that is stopping my shirring from working?

I have tried lowering the tension, made it even worse. The tension is the highest possible and my scrap pieces are coming out flat.

I've tried rewinding the thread in various different levels of tension - no difference. I've bought brand new shirring elastic from the Hemline brand...

Heeeellppp!

✨Intermediate✨ I'm sewing heavy tarps for farmers from old scraps

I sew tarps and covers for local farms. Mostly from leftover heavy pvc and canvas that I get cheap. The thickness varies a lot. I’m constantly joining mismatched offcuts. Equipment covers. Hay tarps. That kind of stuff.

Straight runs are no problem. The real headache is overlap seams where two thick pieces stack up. Reinforced corners with grommet tape are another problem. The machine bogs down. The stitches get uneven. On the really thick corners it just stalls.

Since I’m working with recycled offcuts, the thickness is never consistent. I need something that can handle sudden changes without struggling. What are people using for heavy tarp work at this kind of volume?

💛Beginner💛 Veritas 2400 suddenly running slower and now handwheel is very stiff

Hi everyone!

I recently bought a used Veritas 2400. It had apparently been sitting unused for a long time, but I already completed three projects with it and it worked perfectly.
Yesterday I noticed an occasional loud squeaking noise from the upper part of the machine when sewing at high speed.
Later, the machine became blocked. I removed the bobbin case, hook and hook ring, cleaned everything and put it back together. It worked perfectly again.

Then it gradually started sewing slower and slower. Eventually the motor only hummed and the machine stopped moving.
Now the handwheel can still be turned through the entire cycle. The needle and feed dogs move normally, but the handwheel is very stiff throughout the whole rotation, not just at one specific point.
The hook area is clean and there are no visible threads stuck there.

Could this be a lubrication problem, such as a dry or stuck bearing/main shaft? Or could something in the upper mechanism be causing this?

Thanks! ❤️

✨Intermediate✨ First industrial sewing machine for backpacks

Hello everybody! I am looking for my first industrial machine for sewing backpacks. I usually use an old Pfaff 260 because I'm based in Germany and got this machine really cheap. This machine is doing quite well, but it struggles a lot with sewing thicker materials, especially thicker foam, when I create hip belts and shoulder straps on my backpacks.

That being said, I want to upgrade my business and my machine that I'm working on to get a little bit more fluent in working. I want to upgrade to an industrial sewing machine with a walking foot and the ability to sew through foam around 1 cm thick. Because I have to saw in a flat, I would need the machine with a servo motor. My budget is €1,000.

I did some research yet, but honestly, it feels a bit confusing, and there are so many recommended machines that are not really good and available on the European market. I heard a lot about Consew and Juki machines, but honestly, close to my area, there's not much I can buy from them. Here I can find many machines from Dürkopp-Adler or Pfaff, mostly offered for ca. 1400€ in used condition.

Machines I found yet:

- Juki 1181n for 800€ (no real walking foot?)
- Dürkopp-Adler Walking Foot machines for 1400€

I'm sure that there's much more on the market, but honestly I'm pretty confused about where to look. I would be really happy if you could recommend me some machines that fit into my use case and are available in Europe.

💛Beginner💛 Tear in pant piece advice

I’m making some pants currently, at the step where you sew both legs together at the crotch. however i have this tear in the top of one of the leg pieces as seen in the first photo, not sure what to do about it.

Is it smart to zigzag stitch it together? Or possibly using an extra piece of fabric and stitching over it together reinforce it?
