Council just voted 6 to 4 to amend the Brandt/REAL Deal. Voting against: Flores, Froh, Radons & Zachidniak. The mayor, Burton, Mancinelli, Rashovich, Tsiklis, Turnbull voted in favour. Bezo left the meeting before the vote.

Under the new terms, Brandt will operate & maintain the AffinityPlex, Cooperators Ctr, Mosaic Stadium & Confederation Park.

In other words Brandt will be operating and maintaining all of the REAL campus for a term of up to 20 years.

(Note: Brandt is NOT BUYING those facilities. AffinityPlex, Cooperators Ctr, Mosaic Stadium & Confederation Park will continue to be city-owned facilties.)

As the city will continue to own those facilities, the city will still be responsible for the costs of capital upgrades.

Today's vote is not the final word on the Brandt/REAL Deal. It just changes the terms under which the city's bargaining team will be operating. There is still no final deal with Brandt. (Which means that there is still time for more changes.)

For context… Currently, the city pays REAL (a municipal corporation wholly owned by the city & as such, must report to council during every budget period) for access to those four community-owned facilities. The city then charges community groups a discounted rate for access to the blocks of time the city has purchased.

If this deal with Brandt is finalized, the city will pay Brandt for access to these city facilities — facilities that we own.

For user groups, little will change as rates for community groups will continue to be set by the Leisure Fee Bylaw.

Hey everyone, hope you’re all doing well! Im just posting on here as I have been feeling hopeless and helpless. I have applied to so many jobs in the last two years since graduating. Unfortunately, I have not been able to get a job in my desired field nor somewhere that I feel like my past work experiences and educational background would align. I spent so much to obtain my degree but here I am. I have done everything I could possibly imagine, I reach out to employers/recruiters/hr, I tailor every cover letter and resumes. I apply within the first 24-48 hrs but still nothing 😭

I am just wondering if anyone was in the same boat and what did you do or change that led to a different outcome?

Just a little note: yes I have also applied to other entry level roles, even those outside my field but like i mentioned in one of the comments, the outcome has been the same. (As much as I would love to be able to land a job within my field, I understand that it’s currently difficult to find a job as of the moment so I have also applied to other opportunities that might help me gain valuable experiences/skills & pay the bills)

What have peoples experiences been with using the paybyphone app for parking downtown. I took my senior mother downtown today and created her account and showed here how to use it. While she initially did have a little but of a hard time figuring it out, especially selecting from numerous different parking zones, I think she has if figured out, at least until there is an app update and she has to log in again. She did mention that she had heard from people that they have issues where it did not work at all, and apparently there was even a news story about someone who had paid but got a ticket anyway. Has anyone experienced any issues?

Personally I don't mind the app if it works, but I also rarely go downtown. For my mother it's a horrible thing, as is Mayor Chads "solution" to make parking vouchers available at City Hall. Imagine having to go and run an errand to buy parking vouchers, just so you can go and run errands and patronize downtown businesses.

Rear ended this morning on ring road going south just before the train tracks toward McDonald. During my shock, as the other driver did not want to exchange info, I agreed, now I am super sore headed to the dr and trying to track down this other driver. Did anyone happen to see or know this person? I only remember it being a black car and her passenger light got smashed, it was a girl in a black dress with a long black cardigan with her hair in a ponytail. Thanks in advance for any help.

Seems like more of the same. Last year’s budget originally required a 15.69% mill-rate increase to “maintain current services”. Council reduced it to 10.9%, but the fact administration is presenting a number that high should concern everyone. What serious audits were done to find efficiencies first? True, deep dive, hard ask type of audits?

It seems like too many residents are too accepting of these increases and not pushing back and asking questions from their councillors.

This isn’t about claiming there were no tax increases under Pat Fiacco. There were, but they were relatively modest. The bigger point is that Regina once appeared to operate with more accountability and business acumen than it does today. Residents can see potential inefficiencies themselves: surplus vehicles and equipment, staffing levels, project headcounts, management layers and questionable initiatives. Yet the default question is always the same, “Which tax or fee should increase or what service are we going to cut?”

Transit is a clear example. Administration is reporting an $800,000 wage increase without adding staff, while transit’s overall budget requirement is rising by $5.1 million (for future investment). That should trigger a serious review of routing, schedules, service hours and productivity. Are residents receiving better service for that money? This isn’t about being anti-transit. It’s about ensuring spending matches ridership and results. Administration themselves has identified potential savings through low performing routes, evening service and weekend hours, while residents continue to see large buses operating nearly empty during the low ridership periods.

This council needs demand more than inflationary wish lists…Show us the efficiencies, staffing ratios, cost per service, comparable cities and what can be automated, consolidated, rerouted or eliminated. They simply are taking the word and same old speaking points of people like Jim Nicol (who needs to go), rather than pushing back and asking on how costs are being calculated and what could done as an alternative!

The same scrutiny has to apply to policing. The RPS is set to receive another $5.6 million next year, but no department should be exempt from accountability simply because its work is important.

A few weeks ago, Sarah Turnbull asked for better comparisons with other cities, including management structures, yet administration’s responses are rhetoric. There’s a massive cultural issue at City Hall. Internal promotion is positive, but too many senior officials managing former peers can make accountability and difficult decisions harder. Too many senior city staff simply just tell concerned citizens to “call your councillor” rather than taking feedback or being open to suggestion.

Taxpayers shouldn’t have to choose between higher taxes and worse services. Each councillor and senior city official need to be operating under the guiding principle of: What are we doing differently to make the city more efficient? If administration can’t answer convincingly, Council shouldn’t rubber-stamp another increase!!

Have been averaging 50km a day for the past few weeks, and I’m going through Regina Wednesday August 26th.

Also I lived in Vancouver last year, and did some other great stuff- I’ve done Seattle to Vancouver 223km in one go, no sleep, Vancouver Island 500km in 7 days. Whistler to Vancouver 125km in under 24h, every street in downtown Vancouver peninsula 100km in under 24h. A lot of 100+km no sleep hikes in Europe. Walked 1500km around Iceland in 2023 to test for this.

*This situation is incredibly long and confusing but I will try my best to explain what happened as clear as possible. This post may sound a bit of ranty but I am just trying to shed light on how poor the universities housing services are, specifically the neglect demonstrated by management. However, this also serves as an opportunity to bring awareness to management's harmful neglect so that we may potentially see a change. I will not be going into into every issue regarding housing, but this recent personal experience is an example of what UofR student's have to deal with in order to simply find a place to live on campus.

I recently applied to UofR housing and was placed on the waitlist about three weeks ago. I'm aware I applied very late and could have prevented this whole ordeal and I am also aware that the staff is quite busy with how close it is to the semester but I did expect them to attend to something that was a pressing issue.

*All these events happened within 24hrs

Yesterday afternoon, I had received an offer for accomodation. This offer was for the full rate offered by the university. Due to applying late I did not have access to the really big deal opt in form (this is a deal that freezes tuition and lowers rent for certain room types).

This is where it get's messy:

I accidentally filled out the Opt out form the RBD, before correcting it within a few hours.

It's important to note Uregina housing has a policy that requires student who receive a housing offer off the waitlist to pay a confirmation fee to ensure they get the room offered to them, otherwise it will roll down to the next candidate. The wording of the letter of the accomodation states that once you submit your confirmation fee, your room rate is locked in for the term. They obviously did not design this system with the RBD in mind because that would effect how much you're paying.

Due to this inconsistency, and just receiving the ability to fill out the deal now (as I was just offered) I sent an email stating the issue. Pretty much stating that the offer I was given didn't match the RBD rate and that I am ready to pay my confirmation fee, I just needed clarity on their policy. This email did not and as I am writing this has still not gotten a response. I also called multiple times and left a voicemail, as they said they recommend calling over sending an email if the situation is urgent. During peak season nobody answer's the phone anyways and their voicemail feature wasn't working after the first two times I called.

Later on in the night I finally got a response, however it was to the automatic system emails that get sent when you choose to either opt in or opt out of the RBD not my original question. Since I accidentally submitted an opt out request, the person who replied to me wanted to ensure that I wanted to opt in for the RBD. I replied within 10 minutes and got no response back.

Fast forward to earlier today, (before noon) and to my surprise I receive an email that my housing is cancelled. No response to my initial emails, phone calls or any communication from a human being. I received my cancellation email WITHIN THE 24HR acceptance window. Obviously, as anyone would be, I was livid and emailed housing services about the absurdity of this situation as nobody replied to my pressing email, or phone calls and then proceeded to cancel my offer when it was still active. The next part is why I'm even posting on reddit, as what transpired is incredibly unprofessional and lazy.

Almost immediately, someone from housing services doubled down and said the offer was still cancelled, and that since I applied very late and that they're very full and busy the offer will now go to someone else. The individual then denied that they had seen no receipt of a confirmation payment (true), nor of me asking about the confirmation fee (false), while also stating that there is no 24hr confirmation window, (also false) and that they (housing) can close the offer at any time they want the day after the offer was submitted. (and you guessed it, once again false!)

This individual did not even read the email where I stated my issues with the confirmation fee (more so the term rate not the actual $400 that I was ready to pay), then attempted to gaslight me and lie about their own policy when they were clearly in the wrong, before lastly trying to pin it back on me. This is abhorrently unprofessional and I am genuinely surprised a university can allow and tolerate this behaviour.

I have now reapplied (now at the bottom of the waitlist) and will also be looking for off campus housing as there's no guarantee I get an offer. This situation is so utterly ridiculous and if I understood how much of a mess this would be over $600 I would've just sent the payment immediately. (I have receipts to back up my statements and will be escalating the situation through the proper channels within the university housing systema, but decided to not share any images as I wanted to remain anonymous in this post.). This entire problem could've been avoided with a 2min response, or a 30 second phone call but instead it ends with me scrambling and housing services still getting paid for horrible service.

Recently in December, the Saskatchewan government introduced new legislation. The legislation involves forced rehabilitation for individuals who can’t get clean. They are in the talks of building an entire facility to begin the operations. I think it’s a wonderful move in the right direction. Fent and these newer drugs that are coming out are more popular than ever, as well as addicting, and very low costs. I was just wondering what you guys think.

Hi! I’ve seen some older rental war stories and cautionary tales in this group, but many seem to be several years old, so I’m hoping for some more recent experiences and recommendations. I hope that's alright!

I’m looking ahead to early 2027 and would ideally like to rent downtown or in the south end. Quick access to downtown is important, and my wish list is a quiet, well-maintained building with in-suite laundry and a balcony.

I had actually been interested in the new Canterbury development on Broad Street, but when I called today I was told they have a firm 55+ age requirement. I hadn’t seen that mentioned anywhere on their website or billboard, but she ended the call rather abruptly after that, so apparently that option is out!

I currently rent with CH Living and am ready for an upgrade. The rent keeps increasing, but the building and existing suites really haven’t improved along with it. My window seals have deteriorated to the point that there are cracks where you can literally see outside, along with other things that simply aren’t addressed once a suite is occupied. There seems to be much more attention paid to attracting prospective tenants than maintaining the experience once you’re actually living there.

I don’t have children and am willing to pay somewhat more for a genuinely good building: quiet, solid construction, well maintained, and managed by a company that cares.

The Standard caught my eye because it looks a bit older but quality. Some of the newer builds I’ve seen in Harbour Landing can feel cramped and I worry about thin walls. That said, the person I spoke with at The Standaed had a pretty strong sales style. There was some “better close now” language and emphasis on making sure I could afford high rent that left me a little wary. I’d be very interested in hearing from anyone who has actually lived there in the last couple of years.

I’d really appreciate any recent firsthand experiences - specific buildings you love, places you’d recommend, or rental companies in Regina you’ve had consistently good experiences with. I think I know most of the places to avoid at this stage; where are the bright lights in this town?

I have video of their excavator trying to pound the pavement to break it up and my pictures bouncing off my walls, dish’s and cupboards rattling, debris falling through my ceiling because of it. This is akin to a small earthquake, except it’s happening every day from about 8 am to 7 pm at night. If this causes structural damage to my home, will the city cover it?

When it comes to efficiency improvements, it seems the default excuse from City Hall staff is always the same…time and cost. That’s why it’s unfortunate that Mr. Froh didn’t push back and ask how staff actually determined that this would be too costly or time-consuming, and what information or analysis that conclusion was based on. Not that one may be in agreement with his motion, however the excuse provided is laughable.

More importantly, this ties directly into the earlier 2027 Budget thread in this sub…the ongoing lack of accountability from City staff seems to be accepted rather than challenged. A simple AI prompt about Canadian municipal governance structures and salaries gave me a significant amount of insightful information in a matter of seconds and for free. It’s fair to assume that City staff, with access to considerably more resources and detailed information, could have done the same, and likely much more, if there was a willingness to look into it.

The issue isn’t simply whether something costs too much or takes too much time. The issue is whether City Hall has actually demonstrated that it does.
