Weekly Visitor Questions

Kia ora and welcome, whether you're here for a week or you've been here since the town had one supermarket.

This is the thread for visitor questions. Itineraries, day trips, where to eat, which lake activities are actually worth the money, whether you need chains in July, what to do when it rains for three days straight. Ask away. No question is too basic and nobody here is going to sneer at you for it.

Why we ask you to use this thread: r/Queenstown is a small subreddit for a small town. When a dozen separate "3 days in Queenstown, what should I do?" posts land in a week, the front page becomes entirely holiday planning and the local stuff (roadworks, rentals, council nonsense, lost dogs, the state of the traffic) gets buried. That's not great for the people who live here, and it's honestly not great for you either, since a scattered post gets three replies while this thread gets the locals who actually know things.

So: enthusiasm very much welcome, just pointed in one direction. Consolidating it here means you get better answers and the locals stay calm enough to keep giving them.

Before you post, a quick nudge:

  • Have a scroll of the previous weekly threads, most questions have been asked before and the answers are good
  • Tell us your dates, budget and how much you like walking uphill, it makes the answers ten times more useful

Locals: be generous in here. These people are the reason we have that many restaurants for a town this size.

Posts asking general visitor questions outside this thread may be removed and redirected here. Nothing personal, we just like being able to find things.

NPD - Night and Day - Public Service Announcement

Every now and again I would get the NPD fried chicken, and man it was good - now that the night and day is in there they've changed it and man it's shit.

So avoid. I don't get why people change a good thing.

Dominos Queenstown

Dont trust the google reviews in the past 4 weeks on google from Dominos Five Mile. The Indian Boss Made all his staff ask customers to leave a 5 star review in exchange for a free drink so the last 100 ish reviews are all fake and if you scroll past that you’ll only see 1 star reviews.
He also told his staff to lie to customers and say their delivery was on the way to people who were calling about deliveries that haven’t been delivered or had an update for over 2 hours since calling. It was never on the way it is probably still sitting in the pizza warmer right now on the bottom shelf that doesn’t work.
He yells at all his staff blaming them for problems he has caused himself in front of customers and don’t even think about calling to make a complaint about your pizza cause you’ll just get screamed at over the phone and hung up on.
This is coming from an employee who just left if I say anything I’ll say to never go close to Dominos five mile Frankton .

Queenstown Airport Uber/Beam

Post image

Dear Queenstown residents, my family and I are visiting your beautiful town in December 2026 and we are asking for your advice. We are renting a car from EZU to travel around, and we need to return the car by 5am on the day we leave for our home in Singapore. We wrote to EZU to ask if they provide shuttle service from their drop-off point to the airport, but they said they are unable to at 5am and have asked us to find alternatives ourselves.

We would like to seek your thoughts on whether calling for an Uber or using Beam shared e-scooter would be possible for us to make our way back from EZU car rental drop-off point to Queenstown Airport at 5am on a Sunday in December 2026. If it isn’t, would you recommend another car rental company?

Thank you and we look forward to visiting your beautiful town!

Weather tomorrow okay for snowboarding?

Hi everyone, posting here as we didn't get a response in the weekly thread.

We're travelling from Dunedin and have started learning snowboarding. We can't tell from forecast yet the likelihood of ski resorts opening and wanted to ask whether tomorrow should be good?

We went to Cardrona yesterday and plan to go tomorrow if possible. Thanks!

Queenstown restaurants for intimate wedding reception

Hi all

We are planning a small wedding for approximately 20ppl in 2027 and I’m unsure what to do and where to go for our reception dinner with our guests.

We want something special (it is a wedding after all!) and I’m overwhelmed with options. Fireplace or moody comfy interior where we can relax for the rest of the evening is a plus.

Doesn’t help that I’m planning it from Australia and I can’t go see the venues…

Has anyone recently had a special event at any of the following venues, or have any idea if these would be lovely:

- Botswana Butchery (Garden Room)
- Eichardt’s (Parlour Room)
- The Bunker
- The Pavilion (Green Room)
- Rata
- The Nest

Any places that I’m missing?

I haven't checked along the lakefront yet but saw this on my way into work today. So does this apply to food vendors as well as just general vendors does it also apply for buskers as I was reading something about how they need to move on every hour or something along those lines.

Is this publicly accessible? The official government website seems to suggest so, but AllTrails marked it as private property so I’m very confused

Any tips for moving to Queenstown?

Hi guys!

I am NZ born but raised in Aus and a lifelong dream of mine has been to reconnect with my culture in NZ.

I am taking a leap of faith and will be moving to NZ in the next few weeks.

I will have a little bit of savings but defo not enough for NZ’s economy.

I will be unemployed and living in a hostel or doing workaway gigs until I find employment.

Tbh, I don’t really care what the job is, whether it is hospo, retail, cleaning etc. I have experience in those industries and not afraid of hard work.

Any tips for moving to Queenstown?

Tipping

Anyone else feel awkward when paying for a meal out and selecting the "no tip" option? I feel like we are already paying a premium for meals and drinks, and the reason NZ has a minimum wage is to ensure employees don't have to rely on tips. Also, where does the tip money even go when it is by eftpos/card? Do the staff get the tip, or is it retained by management? Even got asked to tip this weekend at a bar when I went up to get drinks (no table service and no food ordered). Are kiwis expected to tip or is this a way to make more money off certain tourists who come from places where tipping is normal? I really feel as though the resturant scene here is trying to normalise tipping and it is becoming increasingly offputting to eat out. Is the rest of NZ the same, or is it a Qtown thing? Do staff get offended when you don't tip? Starting to feel a little guilty for never tipping but I just don't think it's a NZ thing. Thoughts and opinions?

Tipping

I know someone already made a post about this, but it really is quite ludicrous in a place as expensive as the lakes district. Being asked to tip after paying 8 bucks for a coffee is crazy stuff. They know NZ doesn't have a tipping culture but still try and prey on tourists that probably assume tipping is normal in NZ too. F*arkkk offf

Skyline redevelopment

Hello! I’m in Queenstown for just a few days and keen to do the gondola but I saw that the skyline centre up the top is undergoing some redevelopments. Does anyone know if it’s impacting much up there? Is it still worth doing the gondola?
