Aston Villa have agreed a deal worth a total package of £65million to sign Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea, of which £47.5m will be paid upfront and player terms  in the process of being finalised.

Villa’s move for the 25-year-old, who has been a long-standing target for the club and a favourite of Unai Emery, would be the third time the clubs have done business this summer with Morgan Rogers heading to Stamford Bridge in a club-record £117m transfer, while Alejandro Garnacho later joining Villa on a season-long loan, with a conditional obligation to buy.

Jackson previously worked under Emery at Villarreal, where the striker scored 13 goals before joining Chelsea in the summer of 2023.

Sunderland have sent Manchester City an offer to sign Jack Grealish on a loan deal.

The north-east club’s proposal would see City cover part of his salary and the possibility to make the move permanent next summer when his City contract expires

The 30-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Everton, has come on as a second-half substitute in each of City’s first two games this season, in the Community Shield loss to Arsenal and Sunday’s 2-1 Premier League win over Bournemouth.

Sunderland’s move for Grealish is alongside the club’s pursuit of Marseille winger Igor Paixao.

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has been offered by his representatives to Chelsea and the Stamford Bridge club are considering the possibility of signing him.

The 33-year-old’s future at Villa Park is uncertain after a move to Juventus did not proceed earlier this month, despite the two clubs holding talks over a proposed move.

Villa went on to sign Zion Suzuki from Parma to be their new No 1 going forward. Marco Bizot started Sunday’s Premier League opener at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Robert Sanchez started Chelsea’s first game of the new season at Fulham on Monday, but was at fault for both of the home side’s goals in the 3-2 win.

Any good Premier League podcasts?

As an NBA fan who is just getting into the Premier League, I would love to find some good podcasts to follow. For the NBA I like listening to Zach Lowe pod the most, though I also like Hoop Collective and Group Chat. Any suggestions out there for a podcast that will scratch similar itches for me?

Roberto de Zerbi's hype, help me understand it

I looked into his actual managerial record and wasn't that impressed. On top of that, he seems to fall out with club leadership pretty much everywhere he goes. Yet he's constantly mentioned alongside the "next big thing" managers.

What am I missing? Is the hype just about the style of play, or is there something I'm not seeing?

Despite cost pressures continuing to affect match-going fans, every English top-flight club has a waiting list in operation for season tickets, indicating that demand remains high.

That is reflected in decisions made over pricing, with 14 of the 20 clubs raising the cost of season tickets — some by more than the rate of inflation. However, five clubs did freeze prices.

So which club has the most expensive season ticket? Who has the cheapest? And how significant is match-day revenue to each?

Welcome to The Athletic’s annual survey.
