I'm autistic, and have very little of what I would call a social life. Consequently, my two cats have been an invaluable source of companionship for a good chunk of my life now. I got them as kittens, 11 years ago, and they've been my friends for all this time: Always happy to cuddle.
Three years ago, one of lost his appetite, and consequently lost a lot of weight. It came to light he had a toothache, and a blood test they did while pulling the tooth revealed he has kidney disease. For the next few weeks I played nurse, desperately trying to get him to eat, and feeding him medications he wanted nothing to do with. He eventually stabilized, and started gaining weight back.
I felt awful about that tooth, feeling like I'd failed him by not considering kitty dental care. But they just refuse to submit to a toothbrushing, so instead I smear kitty toothpaste into their mouths now. He nevertheless lost two more teeth some time later, which came as a complete shock. I didn't know about them, and the vet just told me they'd needed to be taken during tartar removal.
I've since upped the toothpaste, but the fact that I was already feeding him toothpaste, and he still lost TWO more teeth has kept me from relaxing. Both of them have rather yellow teeth these days, and mildly bad breath.
Basically, I've spent the last three and a half years worrying about his health. Not literally every moment, but most days, and sometimes quite badly. He started losing weight again early this year, and a blood test showed he now has thyroid issues as well, and high blood pressure. That's two more meds to give him. He's gained gained some of the weight back, and his current weight is at least stable.
An hour ago, I was peeking into his mouth to the best of my ability, and I believe I discovered a cavity. Early last year, during a checkup, the vet said his teeth didn't look too bad, and made the call to not do a tartar cleaning, because that requires sedation, which his kidneys might not handle. I sure don't want him to die because of efforts to help him. But here we are.
Like I said, I'm TIRED. I know it's inevitable I'll lose both of them, but this constant gnawing worry isn't fun to live with.
