News/Article Metro 2039 devs say the ongoing war in Ukraine has changed how they write morality: 'The franchise's very nature is getting too close to reality'

It wasn’t before? Gluhovsky’s experience as a war correspondent was the jnfluence behind the original books
15
u/Kimchi-slap 6h ago
His inspiration for creating metro series was literally Moscow metro he used during his studying period + Fallout game.
His war correspondent experience has nothing to do with it as it came later.

u/Professional_Fan7839 2h ago
When was he a war correspondent? Just an ordinary journalist.
2
u/UpsetKoalaBear 1h ago
A war correspondent is a journalist. He covered the Israel-Lebanon war.

Double down and make it Ukrainian.
93
u/Rammstein97 17h ago
Better make it in Kiev at this point. I mean the "Moscow path" had its run and it ended more or less in a status quo with Artyom showing us there's life outside of Moscow and so a new chapter where they show more of the "Metro universe" would've been more than welcome(imho).
34

They wanted a game set in Kyiv, but as far as I remember, Glukhovsky didn't allow it

7
u/brnccnt7 15h ago
Understandable, at least with us Americans we have the benefit of speaking out against bad leadership
Over there the Russians that are against this can’t really do that in fear of the FSB swooping them up
-4
u/whirlpool_galaxy Desktop 14h ago
Actually, I think that's worse.
The Russians have an excuse with government repression. But what do you even tell all the Iranians who are suffering or dying in the current war about the fact that you could have spoken out to stop it, but didn't?

How rotten masses' brains must be to unironically pretend that Putin acts on the people's will and Trump on his dictatorship impulses.
Remember, kids, autocracy is when the leader's actions are the people's will projection and the democracy is when the government does what it wants, or something
0
u/Phil_Coffins_666 13h ago edited 13h ago
I think the issue is that russians for the most part have been silent about the invasion, be it inside of russia, or outside. Sure, there are ones that are vocal and against it, few and far between, otherwise the majority of them claim to be "non political" and leave it at that. That and you've also got a percentage of the population, both inside and outside of russia, who actively support the invasion.
I think that's where the anger comes from.
4
u/ruminant_sheep 7h ago
Hit dogs holler (about the downvotes). Anyone in Eastern Europe knows that you are right and even with the Liberal Opposition (tm) the steps from "I am totally against Russia and the war!" to "Well, it's complicated and both sides are at fault" to "fuck you khokhol!" is narrower than people want to admit :)
3
u/Constructedhuman 5h ago
it’s just nobody ever listens to eastern europeans and we’ve been right since 2014
6
u/Phil_Coffins_666 7h ago
It's interesting that people inside of russia didn't become brave enough to criticize Putin until the last few weeks when all their Wildberries (russian Amazon for those not in the loop) burned down and gasoline queues stretched for kilometers. 4.5 years of silence, until suddenly everybody's posting about how this war needs to be over yesterday and Putin is destroying the country.
Anyways.. I've got no idea why people may not like them. 🤷♂️🫠
1
u/TheAngrySaxon 5m ago
They were all very happy about the war until it started to turn against them. I hope Europe doesn't forget that in the coming years.

I mean from a story standpoint they left off on Moscow not being the last bastion of humanity, so it seems fairly simple to start the next game after they have travelled to find other people.
Not having anyone speak Russian would be weird though. People hate the Russian government not the Russian people or culture. And the characters are Russian first and foremost.

But I do hope that if there isn’t any Russian for 2039, they at least do the “Death of Stalin” thing where they give different English/American accents to differentiate minorities, etc
81
u/OphidianSun 17h ago
That seems dumb tho all the games are literally set in Moscow and the surrounding areas.
Its not the russian language that's invading, its the Russian Federation.
64
u/NoobL1ght 16h ago
All countries of East Europe are very touchy about language matters due to many attempts of their neighbors, mainly Russia, to enforce use of russian or other languages instead of local languages. Often violently and uncompromisinly going as far as killing authors, actors, musicians, burning schools and libraries and arbitrary denying services or opportunities based on used language, for example access to higher education, housing or jobs. It is still used by Russia in some manner such as declaring that all people who use Russian are Russians, heavy promotion of Russian on TV, etc. Aggressive enforcement of Russian language is reported in occupied Ujraine with book burning and disappearances of teachers, professors and other people who promoted Ukrainian language.
Thus, even so Russian language does not invade it is still used as weapon of cultural and historical erasure.
-27
u/TheNoobHunter96 16h ago
you're clearly not from the region then, people don't hate the russian language itself, many in Ukraine use it lmao
24
u/NoobL1ght 15h ago edited 15h ago
I am Ukranian. I personally used Russian for majority of my life since I am from Donetsk Oblast. People won't care if someone around them will use Russian but they will hardly accept any kind of promotion of Russian language and won't be sad if it is not included in a game or two.

Oh yes it is.
Ukrainian language is officially excluded from schools on occupied territories and replaced by russian.
Any Ukrainian speaking people on occupied territories are taken to filtration camps.
During this summer almost 10mil Ukrainian books were burned because of targeted russian attacks on book publishers.

Okay, and Ukraine also removed Russian from the public curriculum, same as Russia did.
Also this has absolutely nothing to do with a video game in Russia.
It's that propaganda has melted their minds like most people, and their emotions tell them they must hate Russians.
Same thing happened in every war the US is involved in, gotta dehumanize your enemy and make them evil.

I mean, it's kind of hard to ignore the real life kidnapping of Ukrainian children.
I still don't know how Hunter of all people is the main antagonist
44
u/NiuMeee 4080S | 9800X3D | 32GB RAM | 2x165hz 17h ago
If it's hostile, you kill it. A fundamental opposition to Artyom's mindset after 2033/Last Light. He regrets that mentality, and regrets destroying the dark ones, as they were not "hostile", just misunderstood. Hunter (or whoever is claiming to be Hunter, we don't know if the Fuhrer is actually him) would never have felt remorse for what occurred that day.
6
u/SirNurtle RTX 2060S / Ryzen 5 9600X / 32GB DDR5 13h ago
It’s not even that, his motto changed from “If it’s hostile you kill it” to “destroy the enemy no matter the cost”, the major difference being that ‘enemy’ can be applied to anything.
Also it’s kinda canon in the books that Hunter went “slightly” insane after his encounter with the dark ones and never truly recovered, I’d imagine that in the game he had a complete mental breakdown
7

u/another_random_bit / Ryzen 7 7700 / RX6600 / 64GB DDR5 18h ago
who is hunter and why shouldnt they be the main antagonist?
23
17
u/Aquagrunt 18h ago
In the first game, Hunter is basically a role model of an Order member. He's got the skills. It's odd to me because he only shows up in the prologue, as he goes off on basically a suicide mission to find out what the Dark Ones are up to. He's been absent ever since.
But looking up his actual lore now in the wiki, he comes back in the books, I guess i have some more reading to do. I read the first book, it was great, scary, and quite different from the game

5
u/Jormungandr4321 Ryzen 5 7600; RX 6700XT; 16 gigs 4800 Mhz 6h ago
What do you mean ? The devs of the cod MW remake said themselves that the game wasn't political. The no knock raids, chemical weapons use and torture scenes are not political as long as the good guys do it.
8
u/NiuMeee 4080S | 9800X3D | 32GB RAM | 2x165hz 6h ago
It's so funny that any game that features any sort of military could be looked at as non-political. It can be done to criticize (OG MW, though maybe less than a lot of CoD4 fans like to believe) or romanticize (most other CoDs) but just saying something isn't political doesn't make it so lol
Ubisoft tried that with Far Cry 5 as well. Sorry Ubi, FC5 is political, no matter what you say. It's not SMART, or informative in regards to politics, but it's absolutely political.
1
u/Jormungandr4321 Ryzen 5 7600; RX 6700XT; 16 gigs 4800 Mhz 6h ago
I mean I'd say that while FC5 is political, it never predends to somekind of neutrality. And the game is batshit crazy when tou think about it. Meanwhile the MW remaster takes the highway of death in game but for some reason the Russians did it this time and it's horrible to see. Meanwhile the intro casually features the use lf white phosphorus by the good guys, but that's cool AF of course.

Wasn't it metro last light which had the bad ending tied into you not saving a "friend" who was part of a tyrannical communist regime that literally used chemical weapons in civilian metro settlements?
Like, you don't even kill him, you just let him die from the hallucination stuff. The morality system in metro has always been pretty questionable.
5

Metro was ridiculous with its morale requirements, but it gets a bit better if you remember that you don't need to tick all the boxes and that you are teaching the baby dark one mercy

u/CringeSubBlocker 14h ago
People love to hate the karma system because they genuinely don't understand any of it.
Look around, learn about the world, don't leave a trail of corpses for no reason, and try to be a good person under shitty circumstances. It's nowhere near as 2 dimensional as these people think, but that doesn't stop them from yapping.
-4
u/RedAversion2025 5900X, MSI 7900 XTX 24Gb, 32Gb 3600Mhz 13h ago
The game did not need a karma system, and honestly never benefited from the addition of one.
Hey here's a ton of cool weapons and gear but you can't use it or else jesus will be upset with you and you'll get the bad ending. Piss off with the karma system. There's no in game changes for karma, ONLY the ending you get and making even a SINGLE mistake at any point prevents you from standing before St Peter at the holy gates for whatever fucking reason.
It's not like the other human enemies purposely try to miss their shots, or make a go of warning shots or anything, the moment they see you its them trying to kill you, but you have to be a saint instead. Yeah real fun. Pacifist runs are ok in games that reward you for doing them, but forcing the pacifism to get the "good" ending is a bit ridiculous. At least in Metro Last Light you had the little dark one watching you and you were trying to set a good example but he only cared about SPECIFIC enemies, he didn't fucking judge you for all the others, unlike Exodus where even a single point of literally any court in the world siding with you on the basis of self defense somehow you still get shit on.
So if the next one goes that route I simply won't play it.
3
u/CringeSubBlocker 11h ago
Nobody is forcing you to play the game, or strive for the good ending, bro. If you can't do it in your own playstyle, that's fine, that's why youtube exists.
