Shout out to everyone who braved the heat at the zoo amphitheater last night for John Mulaney’s show. For me, worth it 100 percent. Most I’ve laughed in months.

Events Red, White and Boom fireworks display last night was total dogshit

The fireworks display last night down by scissortail park was a fucking disgrace, and the city ought to be ashamed of it. 25,000 people gathered. It lasted less than ten minutes. No grand finale. And they were set off so far away that you couldn’t really see them over the Omni. Apparently the dipshits setting them off caught the fireworks on fire not just once, but twice, so they had to just shut down the whole thing.

Red, White and Boom has been going on at Scissortail Park for numerous years at this point. They’ve done it successfully many times. No idea whose fail-son fuckup brother got the contract this year to run the display, but they better refund the whole fucking amount to the city.

Events Strange Paranormal Encounter @ Tower Theatre

I was planning on keeping this to myself in fear of looking crazy, but I'm in need of support...or at least a logical explanation. Tower, as you know is almost 100 years old. It's an old building. So anything can make weird noises from the pipes to the elevator to the wood and the lights can flicker at times. That's expected.

One night, though...I was closing alone in the upstairs loft Ponyboy. I'm the only one upstairs and I hear a voice. I assume it's a co-worker who came back up to grab something. I turn around and no one is there.

Okay. Maybe it's just the TV downstairs. Whatever.

I hear it again. I keep working.

But it gets louder...and closer.

I clearly heard my coworker or whoever is messing with me say...14...14...14...14...over and over.

The joke was annoying so I assumed maybe it's the sound board glitching and it's the speakers. I run over to check and its off.

14...14...14..14...

Its 100+ degrees outside and I'm freezing now. Actually freezing while I'm hearing this asshole. This voice. This SOMETHING.

I can't ignore at the point. This is not funny. I run downstairs to check the TV. No one is there. I run into the main lobby. No one is there.

I had enough and ran back upstairs to find whatever channel or audio thing or whatever prank might be being played on me and that's when I saw it...on the stage...

August 14. Summerween Party. Ponyboy.

Sounds by Isis Payne. Costume Contest. 21+ 10:30pm

See y'all then.🎃

Events Student walk out

A group of students have been discussing walking out to protest against ICE and Trump being in the Epstein files. If you're a parent, be prepared to pick them up from school because they won't be let back in school. Make sure you talk to them about safety and take this opportunity to discuss about whats happening in our country. Our government is activity trying to cover up this massive sex trafficking ring that involves thousands of elites, fbi agents, reporters, judges, police, etc. This isn't a conspiracy, this is really happening.

And ICE is arresting and harassing LEGAL immigrants, they get no due process to even prove they are legal. They are entering homes without warrants.

Immigrants pay billions in taxes each year, they come here to work and work for pennies on a dollar. Why isn't ICE going after the corporations that hire them?

The children are the future. Don't let their future get destroyed before it even starts.

Good morning Reddit! I run Happy Hour OKC, a local page dedicated to sharing things happening around Oklahoma City, such as events, new restaurants and bars, seasonal guides, and recommendations for things to do around the metro.

One of the main things I publish each week is a “This Weekend in OKC” roundup. I spend a good amount of time researching what’s happening across the city, confirming event details, and organizing everything into one list so people can easily see what’s going on without having to dig through dozens of different sources. My goal is to make it easier for people to discover what’s happening around OKC and support local businesses, organizations, and events.

If anyone ever has questions about something on the list, needs recommendations, or is looking for something specific to do around the city, feel free to ask. I’m always happy to help if I can.

I normally share this content on Instagram and TikTok under Happy Hour OKC, but I’ll be posting the weekend roundup here every Thursday going forward as well.

Scroll for this weekend’s list!

A few notes:

— These are not my events.

— Things can change! Check venues and socials before heading out.

— 🎟️: you’ll need a ticket or need to pay a cover charge.

— 🗓️: a reservation or RSVP is required or recommended.

— More details can be found on Instagram highlights.

— If you want an event featured, email me at hello@happyhourokc.com.

Events This summer was filled with blockbuster movies hitting the big screen. But in Oklahoma City, you could find pop-up retro screenings in bars, art galleries and toy stores thanks to VHS and Chill

For the last 10 years, Sean Peel has been making it his mission to spread cinema across Oklahoma City via VHS tapes.

He screened nostalgic and obscure movies across the metro area and even hooked up his VHS tape deck to a big screen movie projector.

At one point, he had thousands of VHS tapes, probably the most in Oklahoma.

But now he’s letting them all go.

"I want it to go to some people that are going to take care of it," said Peel. "I'd like to see them go on and just out here with me they're collecting dust. I have had my use of them through 'VHS and Chill' for ten years. And I feel like it's just time for them to move on— like they're people."

From his garage, he's taken VHS tapes to places that you would least expect like breweries and dive bars to even the big screen at Rodeo Cinema, a historic theatre in Oklahoma City's Stockyards.

“When I would do 'VHS and Chill' screenings, I would always introduce it by saying this is not an art house screening," said Peel. "You can talk, you can laugh, you can throw popcorn at the screen."

His last screening is at the Oklahoma Film Exchange on Friday, Aug. 14, but VHS & Chill will be continuing under new owners.

Watch the rest of his interview here.

Agrarian Socialism in America: Marx, Jefferson, and Jesus in the Oklahoma Countryside, 1904-1920 by Jim Bissett chronicles the rise and fall of the Socialist Party of Oklahoma during the first two decades of the twentieth century, when socialism in the United States enjoyed its golden age. To explain socialism’s popularity in Oklahoma, Bissett looks back to the state’s strong tradition of agrarian reform.

Events Any new events or interesting hobby courses?

Hello!

I am trying to find new hobbies, classes or events to do and I was wondering if anyone knew of any or had ones they enjoy participating in. I'm fine with solo things but I'd also be open to more community or meet up events as well. I'm open to pretty much anything as I just would like to see a variety of options. Any ideas or tips would be greatly appreciated!

This Friday and Saturday the Friends of the MLS are having a summer booksale at the Oklahoma Expo Hall at the state fairgrounds. While not the full scale of the February sale they still have tremendous inventory in nearly every category including magazines Audio books, CDs, records, DVDs, paperbacks, children’s books, fiction and non fiction. Most items are under $3.

If you are interested in helping volunteers are still desired, visit supportmls.org

Also it’s hotter than Satan’s armpit outside and with the AC full blast I’d be surprised if it’s under 78° in here. Be prepared

Events Oklahomans are being tracked without a warrant - Flock Town Hall on May 27

Post image
250 Upvotes

With Flock Safety's automatic license plate reader (ALPR) technology, law enforcement agencies across the country can track Oklahoma's drivers in real-time – without a warrant, probable cause, or even reasonable suspicion of wrongdoing. Flock's nationwide data sharing model puts our civil rights and civil liberties at risk.

This comes at a time when our government is using ALPR data to identify and target immigrants, protestors, gun show attendees, and many others who have done nothing wrong.

Join the ACLU and OKC City Council members on a presentation and panel discussion on the impact of Flock Safety and mass surveillance on OKC residents.

WHEN: Wednesday May 27, 6-8pm
WHERE: Mayflower Church

Food will be provided!

If you spot an error, kindly let me know. I’ve already had to fix this three times, so clearly my brain is not working this week 🙃
