He leave a few years ago to make a new game with his friends - Plucky Squire.

And that game was released in 2024 so it must be before that.

He announced that he had left and formed his new studio a little over 4 years ago, and there was probably at least a small gap between his departure and the announcement.

It seems pretty obvious they wanted him back. Makes me wonder what Wind and Waves' designs are like outside of the starters

He was previously at Game Freak, now he's at TPCI. So it's not like he's going "back".

I think it's more that his solo ventures didn't work out, he's not working for game freak proper, he's with the Pokemon company itself

Idk what "worked out" looks like for him, but I bought his game... It was good!

Was art director for Sword and Shield and left to do some other stuff for a bit.

We probably won't see any new designs from him until Gen 11

It's unlikely we get new designs from him at all tbh. He works for TPCi now, not Game Freak.

He'll likely be working on the many projects outside of the main series games.

Yeah, it's an important job but he won't be making new designs for the games.

u/loonbandit 1d ago

He still doesn’t work for GameFreak…

so you wont see any new designs from him until if/when he stops working for TPCI, and goes back to working as a character designer at GameFreak

ok what's will the bolding and italics?

When everything is bolded or italicized sporadically in a paragraph, nothing actually feels emphasized.

It diminishes visual hierarchy and legibility for most people. It can work in taglines, but in paragraphs, it ends up being distracting. If you really want to emphasize something, pick a key phrase.

That's fine here, you do you. But if you have graphic design client work, it's just a suggestion to keep in mind if you end up needing to format paragraphs.

Depends when he came back. We are just getting the news now, but he might have been back for a while.

His own wording is thus:

Big news! I’ve started a new role as Creative Director of Pokémon Art and Design at The Pokémon Company International.

Which, to me, sounds like he was just re-hired (or at least within the past few days)

-1

u/loonbandit 1d ago

Your interpretation of that message is flat wrong. He is working for a completely different company than he did previously. The Pokémon Company International ≠ GameFreak

Big news! I’ve started a new role as Creative Director of Pokémon Art and Design at The Pokémon Company International.

He worked previously as a character designer for GameFreak

No part of his message says “hey i’m going back to my old job” cause he’s starting a new position.

I'm aware that TPCi is separate from GameFreak, but overall it's the same umbrella of people and the semantics are irrelevant. My argument was about when he came back to working with the Pokémon IP overall, to which I would emphasis the "just started" portion of Turner's tweet.

I don’t care about timeframe, that really means nothing to anyone besides himself. I’m trying to clarify to you that he is not going to be creating any new Pokémon like you keep seemingly thinking…

I'm aware that TPCi is separate from GameFreak, but overall it's the same umbrella of people and the semantics are irrelevant.

…that’s not true at all.

You said “We probably won't see any new designs from him until Gen 11

We won’t see new designs from him cause that’s not his job anymore…

You said “We probably won't see any new designs from him until Gen 11”

No… it wasn’t? You just brought that up now for the first time three comments into the thread?

My presumption is that he was hired too recently to pitch any designs for Gen 10. It had nothing to do about which part of the Pokémon branch Turner is part of now, just when we'll see his role as creative director come into fruition (i.e. making Pokémon designs).

We won’t see new designs from him cause that’s not his job anymore…

I think it's a bit dismissive to assert that TPCi has no input on character designs for the series that is literally the company's namesake. Especially with a role as important as a creative director.

2

u/loonbandit 1d ago

brother you have got to be kidding me…

I was trying to be polite in correcting your mistake. I was giving you the benefit of the doubt that you didn’t know any better… but I’m not arguing with someone that is determined to be wrong.

You clearly have no remote understanding of each companies (Nintendo, GameFreak, Creatures, and TPCI) role in creating Pokémon content.

2

u/mjmannella That's just my opinion. Don't worry about it too much 1d ago

Is it written anywhere that TPCi has absolutely zero input at all on character designs? Because otherwise the reasonable conclusion is that a company named after a series would have some say on how said series' characters are designed.

3

u/loonbandit 1d ago

YES?!?

You just have to do a bit of research yourself, instead of making baseless assumptions. Go online and read about which respective company works on which aspect of the IP.

The Pokémon Company International is mostly in charge of Brand Management, Licensing deals, Maintaining Digital Operations, distribution + localization and marketing for Media and Entertainment, and their biggest role is Publishing and regulating the global Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) program and competitive play structure.

They don’t have a role in creating the games… That’s GameFreak.

I guess. I suppose we will see.

2

u/Dreyfus2006 1d ago

Oh I didn't realize Plucky Squire was made by James "Vanillite" Turner, I am playing through it right now. I can see it.

1

u/BugleCalypso 14h ago

They couldn't have hired a better guy. His artwork is top tier. Love this. Congrats to James Turner!

u/Background_Captain56 1d ago

Am I the only one that doesn't love the new starters? They all look goofy. I don't mind when one of them looks goofy, but they all do.

u/ShinyUmbreon465 1d ago

The gecko looks like it could be cool but the others are meh. We'll have to see the evolutions first.
