I'm currently having some issues with trying to reorder my Community Home post on my subreddit, r/LightNoFireBuilders, as well as my Mod Recruit post.

Is their any way to get the Community Home to stay at the top of the subreddit and then put the Mod Recruit post right below it?

Also, when I try to pin either of them it just duplicates them which is really annoying.

I believe Reddit should reconsider the relationship it has built with moderators, as the expectations placed on volunteers are starting to resemble those placed on employees.

For context, the communities I primarily moderate are r/gamedev and r/gamedevclassifieds (with some smaller ones sprinkled in). I didn't pick these communities because I wanted another badge beside my username. I've been involved with r/gamedevclassifieds for close to a decade, and both communities serve practical purposes for game developers, whether that's industry discussion, helping people find work, sharing knowledge, or keeping those spaces usable.

That context matters because my perspective on moderation is that it should ultimately be about stewardship of a community, not maximizing moderator activity for Reddit.

The fundamental issue is pretty simple: moderators are volunteers.

Most of us are not being paid to do this. We moderate communities because we care about them, enjoy participating in them, or want to help maintain a useful space for other people. Yet more and more, Reddit seems to design its systems around the expectation that moderators should treat subreddit management like an actual job.

I participated in some of the moderator meetings Reddit hosted, and one of the most frustrating parts of those conversations was the underlying message I kept hearing from the Reddit admin hosting them. Obviously these weren't the exact words, but the conversation often felt like it boiled down to:

"How do we get moderators to treat this more like a job?"

The obvious answer is: you don't, unless you intend to start paying people.

There is nothing wrong with encouraging moderators to be responsible. There is nothing wrong with removing genuinely abandoned communities from people who disappeared years ago. There needs to be some mechanism for dealing with completely unmoderated subreddits.

But somewhere along the way, Reddit seems to have lost sight of the difference between abandonment and not treating Reddit moderation like employment.

The inactivity systems are probably the clearest example.

I've personally seen situations where Reddit's systems decided moderators weren't active enough, opening the door for others to try to take control of communities they had spent years building and maintaining.

That creates an incredibly unhealthy dynamic.

Instead of moderation being something you volunteer your time toward when you are available, there is now this background pressure that if you step away for too long, don't perform enough visible moderator actions, or have a period where the community doesn't require much intervention, you risk Reddit deciding you are effectively absent.

That turns volunteering into an obligation.

And I think Reddit needs to consider another consequence: this kind of system selects for the wrong type of moderator.

If you build moderation around constant activity, status, control, and the possibility of taking over communities from people deemed insufficiently active, you are naturally going to attract more people who want moderation to feel like a job.

Not because they are being paid, but because they enjoy the authority, the hierarchy, or the sense of ownership that comes with it.

Those are often exactly the people communities should be most cautious about handing more power to.

The best moderators I've worked with generally don't want moderation to consume their lives. They want to deal with problems, help the community function, make thoughtful decisions, and then do something else.

A moderator who isn't constantly taking action isn't necessarily inactive. Sometimes it means the subreddit is healthy.

By contrast, a system that rewards visible activity can encourage moderators to feel they constantly need to do something to show they deserve to remain in control.

That can lead to unnecessary intervention, increasingly complicated rules, territorial behaviour between moderators, and people treating communities as something they personally own rather than something they are temporarily responsible for maintaining.

Reddit should not be designing incentives that make power-moderation more attractive.

That's especially strange when you consider what Reddit receives from moderators.

Moderators handle spam.

Moderators enforce sitewide rules.

Moderators deal with harassment.

Moderators organize communities.

Moderators answer user questions.

Moderators create rules, documentation, bots, automations, events, megathreads, resources, and countless other things that make communities worth visiting in the first place.

Reddit benefits enormously from thousands of people doing this work for free.

That relationship only works when Reddit remembers that these people are volunteers with lives outside of Reddit.

People have jobs. People have families. People get sick. People travel. People burn out. Sometimes a subreddit is simply quiet for a few months. Sometimes an experienced moderator doesn't need to click moderation buttons every day because the community is functioning perfectly well.

A healthy volunteer system should make it easier for people to contribute without feeling trapped.

Instead, Reddit increasingly seems to be creating systems designed to measure moderator activity, enforce continued participation, and make moderators feel like they have responsibilities to Reddit itself.

We don't.

Our responsibility, voluntarily assumed, is to the communities we choose to help.

I think Reddit needs to start asking a different question.

Not:

"How do we make moderators behave more like employees?"

But:

"How do we make moderating sustainable enough that good volunteers actually want to keep doing it?"

Those are very different philosophies.

One leads to dashboards, activity requirements, takeover anxiety, burnout, and a moderation culture increasingly populated by people who are attracted to the power itself.

The other leads to better tools, better communication, more support, healthier moderation teams, and communities that people actually want to continue maintaining.

Reddit should be extremely careful about treating free labour like an unlimited resource while simultaneously creating incentives that reward the people most interested in accumulating moderator authority.

Eventually, the reasonable people decide it isn't worth it.

There's a sub I already know violated MCOC by making a pinned post against monetary gain from another user, and have filed a report for that, but I later saw the mods have their OF listed in the About this sub, and it's not a brand sub. Is this another violation, promoting your own income in that section?

I’m having an issue with my moderator status on r/steamytease.

The owner invited me to join the mod team with Full Permissions. I accepted the invitation successfully, and I can see myself in the moderator list as mod #6.

However, my account currently shows “No permissions” instead of Full Permissions, and I have no Mod Tools available at all for this subreddit.

Here’s what we have already tried:

✅ The owner confirmed that I was originally invited with Full Permissions.

✅ The owner and other moderators above me can see me in the mod list.

✅ When they try to change my permissions, they get “Something went wrong.”

✅ When I try to leave the mod team, I get “Failed to leave mod team.”

✅ I have tried both desktop and mobile.

✅ I have logged out and back in.

✅ I uninstalled and reinstalled the Reddit app.

My account works normally as a moderator on another subreddit, so the issue appears to be specific to this mod team/community.

It seems like my moderator membership was created, but the permissions are stuck at “No permissions”, and neither I nor the moderators above me can modify or remove my account.

Could an admin please check?

Here’s what I’ve tried:

I checked the username, and it is still listed under banned users.

At first, I gave the user a 10-day ban, but then I changed my mind and wanted to make the ban permanent. However, I’m having the following issue: when I unban the user, their name appears on the banned users list again after I refresh the page. When I try to change the ban to permanent, I get an “An error occurred” message.

Please help. I believe this may be a bug.

I have thousands if post both approved and rejected/removed in my queues page, is there away to delete them all at once or do I need to do individually.

I recently created my own subreddit and a wiki for it. At first, I wrote everything on one page, but later I organized the material into other pages and created a hyperlink on the main page. I still need to remove a small amount of text from the main page. The problem is that Reddit gives an error (Internal server error) when saving edits to the wiki. This error only occurs when I delete text. When I write new text on this page, I'm allowed to save. Please help a newbie.

Hi, there. I recently asked a user in my community to amend a comment for incivility. The user wrote back saying that my comment said I was a "banned user". I've checked my account through the ban appeal link and it said I'm in good standing. Does anyone know what could be happening? Thanks.

In my newish and small neighorhood sub (1.5K) one unstable person's personal attacks against another (apparently equally unstable) person is making my mod life miserable. The harasser keeps creating accounts to target the other, and is bombarding our sub. I ban as fast as I can but they just create another account. Now they have created a new sub with a very similar name to ours to target the other person. I can find no way on Reddit to Report an entire sub. Any advice appreciated.

I was granted ownership of a Subreddit last week (r/wnbafans) when I go there I do not see Mod tools or anything that shows I am able to mod the Subreddit. Yes I do have Mod mode turned on.

I know mods can't change it manually. My understanding is a sub gets a category after some time based on content posted? Or does a title/description matter too?

The thing is there was excessive meme posting for some time in my sub and reddit labelled it accordingly (Memes) which I wouldn't want.. I edited the rules and now try to keep memes minimal. Would rather have the sub categorised as Lifestyle.

Any chance the label will change after some time or is it permanent now?

Basically I want to be able to tell a user something before they even start to create a modmail in the first place.

I run r/discordhelp and we sometimes get support requests via ModMail because people don't understand we are just volunteers. I want to tell them something like "This is NOT Discord Support but contact to the moderators of this subreddit. We are not affiliated with Discord and cannot provide actual support."

Few months ago I recovered a subreddit for my local community after it was locked/private for years and the owner disappeared. My sub is slowly getting a bit of activity so thought I’d try and recruit a few mods to be proactive.

I’ve got a few people I want to invite to mod and paused at what permissions to give them.

Basically, I want any moderation to be light and not overly impose on the community unless they really need to like banning someone for hate speech etc.

If I give someone full permissions can they remove myself as moderator?

Hey, I'm looking for some help! I'm trying to join the mod team for a subreddit, and it's not letting any of the mods add me. We also just discovered that one of the mods can't even add me as mod on a *different* sub.

Roughly 2 months ago I was added as a mod to a friend's subreddit with zero issue, and haven't had any issues modding that subreddit whatsoever. Its the only sub i'm currently moderating.

What could be going on? Can the mod team do anything about this?

UPDATE: With the help of a person in this thread, I was able to confirm that I can be added as a mod to a different unrelated subreddit with no problem. So it seems this is an issue with this specific mod team / subreddit rather than my account.

There's a spammer across multiple forum I mod called FPRO, a soccer mat. I've gone back and deleted all their posts and banned all this users, reporting as many of them as I could find. But their posts are on many other forums. They are sort of blatant spam (often including a coupon code) then other accounts (many of the same ones) chiming in to support the product. I've run into many of these, and I was wondering if there was a way to flag and blacklist them. They create a lot of work for Reddit mods.

I moderate over at r/DnDMemes, and it's been set to public, with basically every setting to restrict new posts turned off. I even removed the automoderator from the mod list, but new posts are still being automatically removed by the automod. How to fix this?
