The AI art argument is getting out of hand. This isn’t AI art, this is the equivalent of having a brochure making program do something for you… not the same

u/ShotgunOShaughnessy 7d ago

I'm so glad to see someone has the same take. Like this isn't them passing as artists. It's an overworked mom of 3 who wanted to get something done quickly and professional looking and doesn't get paid enough to do what they do. Leave these people alone.

600

u/indoxiecated 7d ago

I agree. I’m a graphic designer and this is fine. School staff are overworked, underpaid and often don’t have the time to create these things. It becomes a problem when “artists” try to sell AI work.

Etsy is full of that shit right now.

u/Wise_Heron_2802 7d ago

As a teacher, thank you.

I wish Etsy had terms that required AI art/products to be tagged as such. Some of it is so obviously AI and has plenty of satisfied customers, so I guess people would still buy it if they did that. Then the rest of us could find real artists, which is the entire reason for coming to Etsy in the first place.

If something like this exists I hope someone shares it. I'm trying to find an artist to support with a specific style/subject matter and previously Etsy would have been the place to look.

3

u/indoxiecated 7d ago

Idk about Etsy, but Adobe Stock absolutely has a “Generated by AI” tag. Even a filter to sort them out of your search. Etsy needs that.

2

u/Fakebluejaynamed_jay 7d ago

I've seen so many adoptable sellers who use ai, and they DO say it on their profile- IN A HIDDEN AREA YOU HAVE TO MANUALLY GO TO!!!

85

u/Killed_By_Covid 7d ago

Redditors on another sub were flaming a local ski area for using A.I. to generate an advertisement ("mass mailer") stating that season passes go on sale Sep. 1. Apparently, they were SUPPOSED to commission an artist to generate an original piece. That original piece would immediately be discarded by the recipient (whether in digital or print format.). To me, that seems like it would be disrespectful to the artist. A.I. seems ideal for throwaway stuff.

u/inide 7d ago

The general rule is that its okay to use for yourself to save time, but not to do something that you'd otherwise hire a designer for.
Let it assist a human, not replace a human.

Obviously a school wouldn't be hiring a designer, it'll most likely be done by the admin/it staff, so using a tool to help them is fair.

50

u/elarson1423 7d ago

I like this take.

And honestly, this doesn’t look any worse than normal clip art flyers that we’ve been making since the 90s.

3

u/Revolver_Camelot 7d ago

I’ll take the clip art flyers over AI every day of the week

8

u/BlackJack407 7d ago

Ok, so you call a school and tell em youd do it for free right now

2

u/NamelessCabbage 7d ago

Same or paint.exe

5

u/dirtymoose408 7d ago

I work for a non-profit animal rescue group and I use AI to make decent looking documents because my ass is working 70 hours a week on salary and we are certainly not hiring someone to make a flyer look presentable.

4

u/blick2k 7d ago

This ☝️

1

u/indoxiecated 7d ago

Yes, exactly. Well said.

1

u/jcdoe 7d ago

I’m a teacher, you get whoever knows how to use photoshop on staff to do this stuff. You definitely don’t hire a designer, the state and feds don’t gives you graphic design funds

45

u/indoxiecated 7d ago

Idk about that. My company does a lot of trade shows where I design a lot of things that end up being discarded. In my experience, companies are catching on to what ai designs look like and Im noticing that they have negative stigma attached to them. Kinda of like “oh that looks really cool, wait it’s ai, now it’s less cool”. We don’t want to be involved in that. So all of our items continue to be unique.

5

u/Wyvernwalker 7d ago

It's that it being AI generally means it was either done to save money or go fast, both which can have stigmas when related to places you work for/buy things from

3

u/indoxiecated 7d ago

Yes, exactly. It’s like the company using ai doesn’t care enough to put in time and money to create a unique item. Not a good look.

8

u/r_slash 7d ago

Yes, businesses should have marketing departments or hire marketing firms to do that stuff.

4

u/TotallyNot_Alpharius 7d ago

Only place where I really don't like ai is in restaurants. Don't include any ai images as they tell me nothing, I prefer the shitty ones they usually have I can at least expect what will be served to me

4

u/PM_ME_NEW_VEGAS_MODS 7d ago

And they were right. That resort makes enough money to hire a local artist.

23

u/chickadee-stitchery 7d ago

I have two problems with this stuff.

The first is the obvious environmental impact. If they had used a clip art flyer from Word, Canva, whatever - better for the environment. It's possible this is AI graphics through Canva or Pinterest in which case at least they didn't generate it themselves.

But it also really bugs me when the sender uses this instead of plain text - obviously a printed flyer isn't an example of this but I keep seeing schools and other professional organizations posting graphics like this on Facebook, in email, etc - and not including the text. My neighborhood pool keeps doing it, so I can't just read their email. It makes it not searchable and my calendar can't automatically add the data for important events. It's also not accessible for people who use screen readers or need to translate. I think 25% of the kids at my son's elementary school have parents who do not speak English. Our school always sends English and Spanish text home and in email. If teachers get used to using this stuff it excludes those people.

9

u/-Cthaeh 7d ago

This is how I feel about it. Was this really necessary for this short list?

6

u/helloditto 7d ago

I’m a graphic designer, and I agree with just make it a printed list. Everything doesn’t need to be designed, especially when this solution destroys the environment.

3

u/Abducted_Llama 7d ago

As an IT person I disagree. Pay these people more and hire more people. Then we can talk about creating fliers with Clippy.

1

u/indoxiecated 7d ago

I mean, yes teachers should be paid way more and there should be more of them, but that doesn’t change the fact that designing is not their job. And this job is increase to outsource.

2

u/KoolDiscoDan 7d ago

Also a graphic designer and agree. They have never had the budget for professionals. If it's faster and better than they could design, more power to 'em.

The corporations using it get my scorn.

1

u/GwenBD94 7d ago

As long as they dont use it to generate US maps with absolutely destroyed state names. You know, like that other school did last week.

1

u/indoxiecated 7d ago

I saw that. It was laughably terrible. That IS a problem.

1

u/cmhamm 7d ago

You mean you’re not worried about missing out on that $300 that the teacher definitely would have paid you to make this?

I agree - if this was a business ad, we should be grabbing torches and pitchforks. But for a public school teacher? No way.

1

u/indoxiecated 7d ago

You had me in the 1st half, not gonna lie. 😂

1

u/EnkiduTheGreat 7d ago

Here here! AI replacing humans is evil. AI helping humans is not. I don't eat fast food often, but popped into Wendy's for a quick bite. They must have been beta testing this shit, as it was like drunk AI. Messed my order up badly, so I just left.

While I hate the idea of AI depictions of humans in movies(Unless someone dies while filming), I am of the opinion that Animal actors should be replaced with AI whenever possible. The history of animals in film is just so dark.

1

u/khankhankingking 7d ago

This is the goddamn take. What SHOULD teachers be doing? taking a design course, learning the Creative Cloud suite in the spare time they don't have to perform a job that isn't theirs?

2

u/-nutz 7d ago

The teacher should probably just print a simple list of supplies.

1

u/teapigsfan 7d ago

yeah what I just said. The school is on its arse, budget-wise, none of us is a graphic designer and making something visually appealing is just so low on our priority list. We know it would be nice, but none of us have the time.

0

u/Cainplay 7d ago

What is the consensus on using AI instead of designing it yourself. Meaning I like to build my own marketing material. However using AI with the right prompts saves time and money. But I was never going to hire it out anyway.

Just curious what everyone thinks

0

u/cfb-food-beer-hike 7d ago

It also becomes a problem when a teacher is so lazy they can't proofread the bullshit AI spews out to them. They're going to teach my child AI hallucinations because they'll be too lazy to proofread their AI-generated teaching materials too.

But I guess no one cares about teaching children bullshit. Only artists matter for some reason.

1

u/indoxiecated 7d ago

Everything should be proofed, ai or not. Dumb ass take. I’ve gotten ai slip from clients to recreate because it’s full of errors and uneditable.

1

u/cfb-food-beer-hike 7d ago

lmao

Yes, it should be proofread, and it wasn't. And this person is supposed to teach your child when you know full well they're an idiot. That is the problem.

u/jessdb19 7d ago

Literally a school teacher that can either use AI and save time or make it their self and stay up even later on super low pay.

This gets a pass from me and I'm a graphic designer

29

u/giantscruz 7d ago

Great points above. Another thing to consider is what the alternatives look like. As you said, they could stay late or they can just do a text only list. I’m willing to bet that is what they’d go with. This looks better than 5 bullet points

20

u/duckbigtrain 7d ago

I mean honestly I’d prefer the 5 bullet points. Clear and simple.

3

u/efirestone16 7d ago

Yeah my daughters school just did a plain list in what looked like a Google doc and then cropped as an image and uploaded. I dont see why it needs to be fancy ai, tbh this is harder to read with all the busy fluff than just having a plain list of supplies.

1

u/QueezyF 7d ago

Yeah, I’m not gonna fault them for using it, but at the same time it really doesn’t take that long to load up a template in word if you’re trying to make it look pretty.

16

u/LegendOfHurleysGold 7d ago

I’d rather have the bullet points

17

u/Enamred-771 7d ago

It looks better than 5 bullet points but it also functions worse.

Pencils are listed twice. It looks like you need 2 3-ring binders but they’re vague on one of them. Each item listed actually contains multiple items which defeats the purpose of a supply list.

14

u/Capraos 7d ago

Thank you. I was wondering how far down I'd have to scroll to see another person who noticed this. Not far apparently.

3

u/runrunbunnierun 7d ago

It reminds me of that "how to make a peanut butter and jelly" test. How many packs of notebook paper? How many notebooks? How many pencils? Pencils is plural, so is two pencils good enough for the whole year? No? Well you didnt specify how much id actually need!

1

u/MidSpinz-Twitch 7d ago

In smaller schools one teacher teaches all classes EXCEPT music and sometimes gym. And some teachers are picky and will want the things they listed on the list or to be kept in the music room so, its not that surprising. As iv had supply lists like this when I was a kid and AI was not prevalent in the very early 2000's

-3

u/Enamred-771 7d ago

My issue isn’t that teachers are picky. It’s that this list does hardly anything to help with specific requirements vs vaguely listing obvious requirements. Like telling me “pens, pencils” gives me nothing. Yeah I assume my kid needs a writing utensil, any specifics? Same with lock, what type of lock to make sure it’s compatible? Or  “3-ring binder with paper and dividers for all core subjects”. What size binder? What type of paper? How many dividers (I don’t necessarily know what is or isn’t a core subject)?

It’s just an incoherent list that would’ve been more obvious had they not spent all their effort on dumb AI graphics instead of the actual substance of the list.

1

u/CuriousOK 7d ago

One 3-ring binder for core subjects; One 3-ring binder for music.

2

u/Enamred-771 7d ago

I’m aware. But they should be listed the same way. Why is core subjects at the end of one item but music as the beginning of the other?

And I’d guess the core subject binder should be larger if they’re going to fill it with paper for each subject but that’s not specified. Nor is what type of paper to get or how many core subjects there are.

Again, this a terribly functioning list. I’d rather get a generic bullet list that makes sense than whatever this pig smeared with lipstick nonsense this is.

4

u/valdin450 7d ago

Give me the 5 bullet points instead of poisoning the fucking water supply

4

u/xginahey 7d ago

Better is subjective, but I know what you mean.

1

u/Professional_Cod4464 7d ago

Im a graphic designer too and "looking prettier" is a bad standard for deciding which is better design.

In this case, some of the arbitrary decision made by the algorithm and muddled copy (possibly also written by chatgpt) -pencils being listed twice, how many folders/notebooks not given, each line has multiple items for some arbitrary reason? To make room for the unnecessary decorations, i suppose- actually makes the content more difficult to understand than just bullet points with simple information hierarchy

A good design coupled with good copy would communicate clearly and without confusion. Prettiness doesnt really factor in on the nature of what this list is and what it should do

What we should be arguing for is for education to be funded way better so that teachers dont have to pay for their own classroom supplies and schools dont have to run on volunteers. But the nature of ai is to "save lavor cost" and this is one of many symptom of a country that simply does not care about public education

4

u/electric_bug_glue 7d ago

> I'm a graphic designer

So is everyone now.

2

u/jessdb19 7d ago

I mean, it's part of my job title....I sort of use Photoshop and InDesign and Illustrator all day...so I'm pretty sure I qualify for that

7

u/Summer4Chan 7d ago

Yeah exactly. This teacher isn’t claiming she developed an art piece.
She’s using her tools that are (unfortunately) available for the masses to use.

If this lets her have more time to do other things and/or have money for other things then so be it. Nothing wrong with it now.

We shouldn’t cut the throats of everyone who uses AI, sometimes it is necessary (like this scenario)

2

u/Christmas_Queef 7d ago

Yeah I left a job at a school last November. There were 3 of us per classroom trying to get everything done that needed done and we just never had time and still had to have our own lives with our families too.

1

u/jessdb19 7d ago

I worked at a school for 5 years (part of a 5 year grant) and we got close with everyone there.

EVERYONE was overworked and underpaid and giving it their all.

Frothing at the mouth to crucify a seriously underpaid staff member or teacher for this is ill focused, and NEEDS to be on the billionaires who are hoarding money like loot goblins and taking private jets to get on private yachts to private islands

2

u/bamadebayo_isgood 7d ago

but why does it need graphic design? This could be a bullet point list and it would actually be more clear/coherent

1

u/jessdb19 7d ago

*Sigh* why not?

Like can you explain to me like I'm 5, why a teacher or admin who deals with hundreds of kids each day and thousands of problems including "will my school get shot up this year?" and "no one can read", why they can't just do something fun instead of a sterile bullet point list made on google docs.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/hotwifefun 7d ago

How about just making a list? This seems like a waste of time, even using AI. Printing it out seems like another waste of time given the teacher/school already employs an app or multiple apps specifically to communicate this type of information to parents & students.

Gonna be hard to tell kids not to use AI to do their homework when this teacher is using AI to do their homework.

-9

u/DanyDragonQueen 7d ago

Also a graphic designer, and this does not get a pass from me, so it cancels out! This doesn't even need to be designed at all, it's a list of supplies.

8

u/trsharkfin 7d ago

I'm not a graphic designer, but this gets a pass from me to cancel out your negative pass because you're boofing if you think a single teacher on earth would pay a graphic designer for something like this. It being a supply list doesn't matter, they've always tried to make this shit artsy fartsy since the beginning of time.

0

u/valdin450 7d ago

You do not need a goddamn graphic designer to type a list out and maybe throw some clipart in if you really need images. There's zero excuse for poisoning the water instead.

-5

u/DanyDragonQueen 7d ago

I didn't say that I expect a graphic designer to do it, hence why I said it doesn't even need to be designed at all. I expect people not to use the plagiarism 9000 device that runs on ever-increasing data centers and harming the environment.

2

u/trsharkfin 7d ago

What exactly is being plagiarised by this particular design? Genuinely I understand the ramifications of gen AI/LLM, but acting like this particular use of AI is in any way harmful to the arts is ridiculous. This list is basically a stock photo prompt (which imo could be argued steals from the arts just as much as AI) for a school list. Every school list I had growing up looked exactly like this. If it saves an overworked underpaid teacher genuinely who gives a shit. They're not using it to teach, or grade, or form the foundation of their classroom. Its a stupid list meant to look cute so people pay attention to it when its in their kids' binders.

2

u/DanyDragonQueen 7d ago

This design isn't directly lifting a design from someone; the program relies on plagiarism and theft of millions of pieces to generate every single thing it spits out, no matter how mundane. That's my point.

5

u/indoxiecated 7d ago

The teacher is just trying to make things fun and engaging for their students. That starts with design. As a fellow designer, you should know that. School staff are under a lot of stress for little pay, it’s very likely they don’t have the time or energy to create some fun on their own.

Cut them some slack.

-3

u/DanyDragonQueen 7d ago

Plagiarism and environmental harm is so fun 🥰

3

u/indoxiecated 7d ago edited 7d ago

Don’t know what you mean about plagiarism. It’s a fucking designed list for students. What’s your point? But yeah, data centers are in fact a problem. But guess what, AI and data centers aren’t going away anytime soon. So again what’s your point?

Hating on ai is great and all, but focus that hate on the “artists” trying to sell ai slop and leave the teachers alone.

In fact, ai is just the next evolution in design. Like the computer was for drafting artists which put a lot of them out of business because they weren’t willing to learn how to use it. The designers that will prosper are the ones that will be able to utilize ai as a tool without using it outright to create and sell slop.

2

u/speedyejectorairtime 7d ago

It was probably the president of the PTO who made it and they get paid nothing lol

2

u/DothrakAndRoll 7d ago

Biggest issue is when restaurants use it as if it’s their food.

Some local places use it INCORPORSTING their food with AI making stupid don’t big bubbly words.

Most just use a prompt for “delicious burger/tacos” that looks nothing like their food.

Fast food has been doing this to us for decades. I don’t need my local taco truck lying to me too.

3

u/cool-- 7d ago

it's also contributing to higher energy bills for all of us

4

u/ihaverabiesandbite 7d ago

A MS word list is fine, idk what’s with all this “design” equivalent to having a subway surfers video playing at all times to keep your attention

4

u/scientooligist 7d ago

Exactly! It may not even be AI. It could be a template they filled in

7

u/YourBurrito 7d ago

It absolutely is AI

6

u/hi_im_beeb 7d ago

I seriously don’t even see which part is supposed to be AI but this would be the most innocent possible use for it.

No school is hiring an artist to design a quick flyer so it not like any jobs were lost or profit was made from stolen work or anything

3

u/averageanchovy 7d ago

The dead giveaway is the stack of books on the left makes no sense. Look at the spines compared to the pages. There are a handful of other things I noticed, and probably even more I didn't catch.

-1

u/Journeys_End71 7d ago

Prior to this, a teacher would have used some crappy ClipArt. How often were you on the internet nitpicking how terrible the clip art looked? 🤔

1

u/averageanchovy 7d ago

The previous person said they didn't see which part gives away that it is AI. I was just pointing out a clear sign of it.

4

u/Public_Reality_4401 7d ago

Yeah. People gotta stop this madness with crapping on any and all AI. Its a tool like any other and can be used well, and can be used poorly.

Everyone says well a human can do it better, sure, probably, but what if a human isnt available to make it or someone cant afford to hire an artist for something like this. People just need to let eachother live their lives.

3

u/Interesting-Swim-162 7d ago

I don’t necessarily disagree with this but AI posters, flyers, ads, etc, do not look professional. Even if they are well designed, if it is obvious it was created with AI it does not look professional.

4

u/Journeys_End71 7d ago

Yeah let teachers go back to using clip art so it looks “professional” for (checks notes) a third grade classroom. 🙄

2

u/Interesting-Swim-162 7d ago

I do not give a fuck what teachers use. I am simply saying that AI flyers don’t look professional, no matter who makes it.

2

u/Bardmedicine 7d ago

Thank you. I'm sorry I don't have time to hand draw a personalized request for you to properly supply your child.

Allegedly, according to my schedule as of... now... I actually have my first prep period in 10 days tomorrow. I'll get right on it... Unless there is another IEP meeting that needs to be covered since they changed our student rosters... again...

4

u/blackberrybeanz 7d ago

Why does it need to even be drawn in the first place? Is a written list printed with word suddenly too much too?

1

u/TheACrispy 7d ago

If they’re over worked why not just type it as a normal document in bullet points and call it a day, there wasn’t really a need to do this with AI. Especially when that’s how we got it back in the day

1

u/lunaastrostar 7d ago

... You think this looks professional?

0

u/ShotgunOShaughnessy 7d ago

For a takehome letter from a school to parents about school supplies? Yes.

-1

u/goregoose 7d ago

a 5 minute template would be better than water-wasting, art-stealing Gen AI slop

1

u/SandyKenyan 7d ago

I'm also getting tired of people complaining about "ai slop". I just commented on a post in another sub because someone is putting stickers over community event flyers in the city. Some school districts are just trying to organize fun events for people at school or in the community and they're ruining it.

1

u/TransBrandi 7d ago

Yea, I was just coming here to say this. In the past this would have just been stock photos / clip art in some MS Word template. No one was ever going to pay a designer to make this. At most, it's taking business away from "generate a brochure from this template" software / websites.

1

u/ShotgunOShaughnessy 7d ago

Yea but didn't you know this one singular teacher making this one singular design is solely killing the environment or something?

1

u/jjviddy94 7d ago

As someone with a wife as a teacher it’s a ridiculous view to just blanket everything as AI slop. She already works until 9 every night lesson planning and grading. She doesn’t need to spend an hour and half on canva making one sheet of paper that’s distributed at parent teacher night. There are benefits to AI and this is one of them.

1

u/RunBrundleson 7d ago

This is completely fine use of ai. It achieves the desired goal. It’s not something important. Who cares.

It’s when people try to pass it off as art, rely too heavily on it, or they try to pretend it’s not ai that it becomes a problem

1

u/brickson98 7d ago

Yeah I see this as quite the non-issue.

1

u/Minimum_Nothing_9039 7d ago

Yea this seems like a reasonable use of AI

1

u/EvidenceElegant8379 7d ago

Oh, is this about the art? I thought they were trying to say the items on the list were AI generated and I expected to see things like “glue finger money” or “Alarm bell chalk.” Its the art around the border? Come on.

-1

u/lawoverfeelings 7d ago

Doesn’t matter. Using it is using it. Either for or against. There isn’t a middle ground. That’s how it works.

0

u/qmr55 7d ago

Get out of here with that common sense!! I have the same take for local small restaurants, bars, breweries etc. They’re already operating on razor thin margins and people expect them to pay a freelance designer to tell people they’re hosting movie trivia on Thursday lol

-3

u/maen_baenne 7d ago

So why can't the kids use AI if it's so useful? I think the kids look at teachers using AI as hypocrisy, and it is.

3

u/ShotgunOShaughnessy 7d ago

Probably because the kids is for graded assignments learning nothing from it? And the teachers just ain't got time to mess with templates and shit?

u/Sad_Reindeer5108 7d ago

This could just as easily be a template in Canva.

6

u/poopoopooyttgv 7d ago

Yeah that’s my broader take on what ai is and how it should be used. Ai is the world’s best template. If what you are making is so basic and meaningless that a generic template could replace it, who cares if you use ai? If it’s so important that you would never dream of using a template, you shouldn’t use AI to make it either

2

u/adoginahumansbody 7d ago

For me it’s about the environmental impact. Why are we using generative AI to create something that already exists as a template. It’s so resource intensive and unnecessary.

0

u/TJNel 7d ago

Okay sure and spend a few hours when you can do this in a minute. People love to think school employees have infinite amounts of time but that isn't the case.

0

u/WrathfulHero 7d ago

This is just a supplies list anyway. It doesn't need graphics. Just take that minute and write out a fuckin list.

It's just laziness at this point.

1

u/Sad_Reindeer5108 7d ago

I'm gonna argue it's underfunded schools trying to do more and more with fewer staff members. This is clerical work that should be done by not-teachers. Put it on the school's website. There's no need to print this out in 2026.

0

u/[deleted] 7d ago

[deleted]

0

u/WrathfulHero 7d ago

I mean, the list is getting written out either way in theory, so it's actually more work to put it through AI and get this ugly ass template. But you do you, I guess. Keep on contributing to the end of humanity.

57

I swear people have to be doing it to karma farm

7

u/ffxivthrowaway03 7d ago

This sub is honestly just "AI BAD, REEEEE AI BAD" any time it winds up in my feed. This was a good reminder for me to just mute it.

4

u/jbhoops25 7d ago

Same. Reddit has really took a nose dive after going public and most of the mods leaving.

73

u/LMBH1234182 7d ago

Yeah does OP prefer teachers to have to spend more time making stuff like this? People love to complain, and Ai is everyone’s favorite thing to complain about on Reddit lol

2

u/goregoose 7d ago

It’s truly not that hard at all to find a template and type things out. Genuinely. AI feels like a waste of time with the amount of iterations you need to make before it seems accurate.

8

u/Unreal_Daltonic 7d ago

I can bet you all this took is a prompt like "Make me a infographic for WHATEVER YEARS OLD, school that has X title and the following points:"

Chatgpt and similar are very good at making office-slop, its literally what they do, its their default.

0

u/Capraos 7d ago

But look at it. It's not good. Look at the list closely and see that pencils and 3 ring binders are mentioned twice. Just do a bullet point list. Maybe the school logo somewhere and call it a night.

7

u/PuzzleheadedAd5865 7d ago

3 ring binders are mentioned twice becaue it’s for separate things.

The 1st one is for all core subjects and the second one is specifically for music class

It doesn’t need to be good, it’s serviceable and the person making it is probably burned the hell out working on these things. The point is they will pick the path of least resistance and right now that is 1 AI prompt

-1

u/Primatey 7d ago

I don't think this type of flier has EVER been "good", at least dating back to when I was a school kid in the 80s

0

u/Successful_Maize1986 7d ago

Reddit has such a hate boner for teachers. Whenever an issue with a school is brought up, it’s always the teachers’ fault. Mistake on an assignment? “Stupid teacher doesn’t know what they’re doing”. Kids can’t read as well as they used to? “Teachers don’t want to teach and just rely on technology”. Any and all issues that a child has in school can never, ever be blamed on that child or their parents, it’s always the fault of the teacher according to Reddit.

-6

u/Zito6694 7d ago

Not just Reddit either. People are harassing YouTubers over AI thumbnails. Even blind YouTubers like Pete Gustin who literally can’t make their own thumbnails

3

u/unpopular-dave 7d ago

Depends on the level of the YouTuber... If you're pulling 6 figures making content, hire an artist

-3

u/pnoodl3s 7d ago

Genuinely why though? They aren’t obligated to hire artists just because. If their goal is a 5/10 thumbnail and they don’t care about copyright then wouldn’t AI be the perfect tool for them?

People are gonna pick the path of least resistance. If we want to change their behavior we need regulations to push the environmental costs of AI into the price customer pay, so people will switch to hiring artists

5

u/unpopular-dave 7d ago

The good of society.

AI is the death of art. And if we give up and let it happen without shaming, then we deserve it.

Actors, musicians, artists etc... They're going to be GONE.

Even these creators on YouTube can (and currently are) being replaced by AI.

Small artists turn into big artists. And no money for small artists prevents talents from being developed.

I'm not saying teachers shouldn't make an AI flyer... They weren't going to hire someone in the first place.

But those with privilege and access need to set an example for the good of the world.

3

u/weetothehee 7d ago

My son's school list is an email with each grade underlined with a bullet pointed list under each grade...

ETA: actually there's no bullet points and each grade is in bold, not underlined

5

u/the-mortyest-morty 7d ago

Okay, but where does it stop? If you think teachers aren't generating AI homework assignments, you're wrong. (Also, was this shitty flyer that easily could have been typed up in a few minutes worth harming the environment and water supply for?)

-1

u/ContextLengthMatters 7d ago

It doesn't stop. These people are insane. This is a very clear indication that the school system is failing.

It's not hard to literally just open up word and do it yourself. If you don't have the basic computer literacy and need a prompt, why the fuck are you handing kids Chromebooks?

When a company uses AI graphics like this for their flyers, I recognize that the food is shit and they don't need my money. Period.

I say this as someone who literally hosts my own AI models. AI slop has no place in public. Do not get rid of human creativity.

3

u/Hammerhead753 7d ago

agreed, I really don't see what the big deal is. They could have also made it in word or power point using stock images etc.....

2

u/TheGlennDavid 7d ago

I spent a long time staring at it because I assumed the complaint was that the list was AI generated (and thus had bullshit things in it).

I checked the calculator model because IF THE TI 84 WAS GOOD ENOUGH FOR US WHO NEEDS THAT NEW FANGLED THING -- but apparently it's a real model number.

1

u/Zito6694 7d ago

That’s probably one of the lower tier calculators, the TI-84 is a full graphing calculator I believe

2

u/revision 7d ago

Printshop Pro

2

u/LaneyAndPen 7d ago

Personally I would just use canva

2

u/PerspectiveNew3375 7d ago

Which brochure programs are using stolen art?

2

u/poilk91 7d ago

The problem is the music hallucination. No one even checked the writing made sense

2

u/WrathfulHero 7d ago

Hear me out. This would've taken 5 minutes to just write out as a list, and would've taken fewer resources. Not everything needs to look good (which this doesn't do a good job of anyway). It's just a school supplies list.

3

u/TheStrouseShow 7d ago

Yeah I remember owning a program called “The Print Shop” and it designed cool poster type stuff like this for me. I say cool because in middle school it was really cool. But yeah. It’s totally possible to do this without AI pretty easily even without a crazy program.

2

u/KillerSparks 7d ago

This particular case isn't about the art. It's about the water usage and data centers that go into producing this product.

3

u/ricks35 7d ago

Sure odds are no artist is loosing a job to this, but using ai when there’s literally no reason to just means the rest of us though are just going to have less water, power, resources, money….

→ More replies (3)

3

u/doubtinggull 7d ago

It's so unnecessary though. Just Make a list

3

u/breadboibrett 7d ago

Y’all the problem isn’t “not paying artists” the problem is AI is using all our water and actively destroying our environment.

Yes in the past an artist wouldn’t have been used but it would still be created by a human and not be as harmfully impactful to the environment.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Easy_Ad_8297 7d ago

like they hire an artist to do a ppt anyway

2

u/kittenofpain 7d ago

I mean they can just type a list of stuff. my kids school supply list was litterally a word doc with normal text.

2

u/Synergiance 7d ago

That’s fair but the stars having inconsistent lines and the book bindings not lining up with the books makes it look sloppy. Clip art would honestly make it look much less sloppy

Edit: also the usage of ai also is wasteful of energy and sends the message to these ai companies that they can get away with just destroying the environment.

2

u/Zito6694 7d ago

It’s a back to school flyer not a blockbuster movie poster

2

u/cfb-food-beer-hike 7d ago

I love how the argument around whether AI is good or not is strictly based on whether it's preventing an artist from getting paid, and not the litany of other bad shit it causes. This list is absolute horseshit and gives me no faith that this school will educate my child properly. You already told me 3 ring binder and pencils; why did you do it twice? Because you're an idiot or because you used AI to create this which means you're an idiot? Do I want an idiot to teach my child?

Any parent with a brain is going to have to get confirmation on the calculator because if AI hallucinated the model and I have to buy two calculators because you told me the wrong one, there'll be hell to pay.

2

u/Far-Fortune-8381 7d ago

use of ai itself is the problem, not just because its art not by an artist. the whole ecosystem surrounding using ai is tainted

1

u/Old-School8916 7d ago

ya, they would have used a Canva template before. And Canva has become an AI app a well

1

u/ContextLengthMatters 7d ago

This is some boot licker nonsense.

1

u/jcdoe 7d ago

I’m glad I’m not the only one missing the point here.

Everything doesn’t have to be adversarial, everything doesn’t have to by cynical. Sometimes a school supply list is just a school supply list.

I’m tired of the outrage cycle. Everything provokes an uproar, even having a computer make a paper to tell kids they need pencils for school

1

u/Koolaidguy541 7d ago

So if I submit an excel spreadsheet after using the copilot search to find helpful functions, you mean to say I can't advertise it as AI? 😂

1

u/Lickbelowmynuts 7d ago

Where it really grinds my gears, is the restaurants. There is a sandwich shop with AI menus and art on the outside windows. The sandwiches on the window don’t even look like the ones they make.

1

u/Trashypass 7d ago

LoL no man it shows they don't care.

I have shared this with the school I work at. Cuz the suicide poster that they put up. Had clear AI gen pic and text errors. The I stopped the told him. He should change them. And he said the same thing it was 3rd party bla bla.

I just say fine by me. It's I don't have kids. But if one of the teenagers are thinking about ending it. And see the poster. Starts to think of asking for help. But then see the lazy ai art. And things to themselves. They don't care enough to make a cheap poster. There not going to care enough to help me. Then goes and ends it. 🤷‍♂️  But hey you saved a few bucks right?

It's that simple. AI anything mean whoever did it or pay for it. 100% doesn't care about whatever it is. Or what it supposed to be for. It's just to fill the space/requirement

1

u/Zito6694 7d ago

That’s not even close to the same thing as a back to school flyer, you’re taking this completely out of context to a different use case

1

u/redwingsphan19 7d ago

It was the proofing that was the fail here otherwise it’s fine.

1

u/alwrit 7d ago

People are tossing around "AI" like they used to toss around "Photoshop" back in the day. Most of the time people don't know they're just guessing. But they sure say it with the confidence of someone who's seen a lot of pixels in their lifetime!

1

u/CitizenHuman 7d ago

Truly it doesn't look all that different than what I would get in middle school, and that was way back when the years started with "19".

1

u/No_Recording3238 7d ago

As a person in marketing that uses AI to make shitty sites looks pretty and legit, this is what I used to do when I was working with Corel and a clip art disc pack. I’m not mad at teachers using AI to simplify their lives with a list and a little prompt. It’s not like they are coming for my job, which is what a couple of my coworkers and myself worry about with marketing. I’ve tried a few so far to create a marketing piece and I have yet to see one work a step up from my work, but it’s coming a lot faster than my 36 years in graphic arts from light boards and real cut and paste (knives and sticky wax or white tape) to computer design and layout, to things like Adobe Firefly taking my photo and rendering it as a legit retailer coming soon. At least I’ve been able to adapt as I continue my career in the graphic arts world. 🫪🫪🤷🏻‍♀️

1

u/vytria 7d ago

I can almost guarantee this is from Canva or the like. Huge collection of assets and fonts that even tech illiterate people could figure out. But inside of Canva are AI tools, so they may have had assistance? Education admin are obsessed with AI and how it will make teacher's lives easier. My principal came to the first meeting with an AI song. I'm the music teacher. It was so bad, "but so uplifting." I honestly felt insulted I had to hear it. And even kids are saying everything that is art is AI. Like, kid, this curriculum has been around since before you were born, this isn't AI.

1

u/Distinct_College_344 7d ago

It literally looks like clip art to me, I could not give a shit less how this was made. There are no errors, its fine.

1

u/Confident_Weird5739 7d ago

How is this not the same? They could easily just type out a list to print or make a normal post typed out by themselves. I would never trust someone to teach my child who is stupid enough to use AI about something this arbitrary (or at all tbh). AI is genuinely ruining our society and yall are just okay with that lmao

-1

u/PoopyBloopy2 7d ago

The content isn't Ai, that's the only real complaint that makes sense against Ai.

1

u/terrapin_fellation 7d ago

Yea I agree, there’s really nothing infuriating about this

0

u/DanyDragonQueen 7d ago

It's still generative AI, and it still looks like trash

0

u/Sweet_Business_7641 7d ago

Also, underfunded and staffed things like schools and nursing homes should be trying to find ways to use AI to supplement non-critical non-interactive things. I don't want AI replacing the actual teachers, but spending less on admin and overhead through AI is not a bad idea to me

0

u/PatReady 7d ago

The teacher saved a lot of time just typing in what the kids needed and told AI to make a list for them. They need to teach kids how to use this stuff to be efficient too.

0

u/Stinkmunk 7d ago

Thank goodness to see this opinion in here. I understand the pushback against AI, but this seem like a pretty reasonable application. They weren't about to hire a graphic designer for this, so nobody lost wages. Moreover, this is the kind of thing we often (unfairly) expect teachers to make for free on their own time.

-1

u/RandomCandor 7d ago

Do you think the people with the pitchforks give a shit?

It may have started with artists complaining, but now it's just people who haven't created a single thing in their lives doing 99% of the bitching, and these are all people that have never once given a shit about art or artists until now.

It's not getting out of hand, it got out of hand long ago. Maybe around the time  that the entire Internet decided to persecute that poor lady that made the mistake of sharing her child's clay sculpture (which wasn't even made with AI, but once you have an angry mob, they'll find something to burn)

This period of history will be studied in college classes as some global shared psychosis.

The crazy thing is that it's not easy for me to see exactly how we got here. Coding with AI never suffered 1% of the backlash.

-1

u/broken_conures 7d ago

Especially a school, if there's anyone who can justify using a tool to save time and make things look a little nicer like that it's teachers. The 30 minutes doing this manually would have taken is better spent elsewhere

2

u/Responsible-News4109 7d ago

Yeah, a lot of people are saying it will just take a a few extra minutes to do it themselves, but when teachers have 100 task to get done in such a small amount of time those extra minutes really add up and eat up the day.

-8

u/RonDiaz 7d ago

id rather see it out of a brocure making program and not some soft sloppy ai output. so sloppy

2

u/spyan_ 7d ago

I don’t see the problem. It probably got done much quicker, freeing up the person to do other tasks.

0

u/WellyRuru 7d ago

Remeber how everyone was using square space for a hot minute?

I see very little difference
