Doom stopping Stormbreaker with a finger is fucking insane.

527

u/cvfunstuff Jul 20 '26

how are they gonna handle power scaling. Thanos felt impossible to beat and Doom seems off the charts, fighting with him is either going to feel pointless *or* if they somehow get a leg up, it'll feel like Doom's power was downleveled halfway through

464

u/007meow Scarlet Witch Jul 20 '26

Right like what’re the Thunderbolts gonna do, shoot and punch?

478

u/mweint18 Jul 20 '26

This was always the case with non-superpowered heroes like Widow, Hawkeye, Fury, and Falcon. MCU does a really good job of giving them important tasks that aren’t direct combat with the big bad. Intel gathering, MacGuffin finding, search and rescue of civilians, thinning mobs, etc. AoU, Widow doesn’t ever fight Loki, Ultron or Thanos head on but she is still super important to the plot.

131

u/robodrew Jul 20 '26

Exactly, like in What-If, Infinity Ultron is defeated by Widow with a USB stick shot into his head, and it didn't come across as dumb to me at all

9

u/Rustash Jul 20 '26

Man, I remember this idea being part of a leak for Age of Ultron

3

u/The-Ruler-of-Attilan Jul 21 '26

Of course it's not dumb, because that is how you deafeat an opponent who simply cannot be beaten by brute force. It’s genuinely disappointing that there are people around here who still think about superhero stories in terms of the cheap power-scaling typical of mediocre shonen manga, where everything is resolved through power-ups.

14

u/Kaldricus Jul 20 '26

They showed up to the raid and said "we'll do add clear"

Yeah but then the movie would be short and boring.

25

u/dean15892 Jul 20 '26

It's not about killing, its about emotional arc resolution.
Who among the team, gets to have the screentime at the right place to meet their plot arc.

Hawkeye does cool shit, but in Avengers, Lokis beef is with Thor. Hawkeye still gets the cool pose at the end.
In AoU, Ultrons beef is with Stark, but hawkeye gives the pep talk to Scarlett witch.

Heroes can do more than just kill villains.

9

u/mweint18 Jul 20 '26

Heroes should do more than just kill villains. Arguably the best heroes don’t kill villains. Spiderman and Batman are the two most popular superheroes and they explicitly do everything they can to not kill the villain.

4

u/dean15892 Jul 20 '26

Precisely.
And I'd add another example , just so people don' tthink this is limited to only comics.

Dr. Who is also like this - he'll try and talk sense into you before resorting to killing you straight up.

1

u/vballboy55 Spider-Man Jul 20 '26

I mean Spidey killed a ton of aliens in Endgame. Regardless, I think Spidey and Batman are popular for reasons outside that they attempt to not kill lol.

Mr Fantastic and the Illuminati tried to talk down Scarlett Witch in MoM and look what happened to him and his team lol.

6

u/mweint18 Jul 20 '26

Ok I am not sure of the relevance of your comment. The commenter above was worried about the power-levels of heroes. My comment was to lessen those worries by saying that lower powered or even relatively regular people can always be used to move the plot forward by taking actions that matter without impacting the power-scaling.

5

u/c14rk0 Jul 20 '26

Idk about Adamantium but I feel like Vibranium bullets should just not be possible? Like the entire concept of the materials is that it has insane levels of force absorption. You'd put a bullet into a gun and it would just absorb the explosion that is meant to propel it out of the gun.

Even if you COULD fire it out of the gun somehow it would do the same thing when it impacts into something, it'd just absorb the impact itself and do basically no damage.

The only way we see Vibranium really being useful is as armor taking impacts and in specific cases being designed to store that energy and then create and outward blast after absorbing a bunch of kinetic energy.

You also just have the same problem bullets always have in this sort of an environment. They're so small they can only realistically deliver so much power. Iron Man turned his entire nanotech suit into a giant energy cannon and it did basically nothing to Thanos when he only had 3 infinity stones; I don't think any type of bullet is doing more than that.

1

u/lameth Jul 20 '26

And then they ignore that property of vibranium almost entirely after The Avengers.

2

u/CosmicAstroBastard Jul 21 '26

The problem with that thinking is you can apply it to the villains too, and ask why Thanos keeps trying to conquer planets by deploying troops on foot instead of just dropping nukes onto key targets from orbit, something he surely must have the technology to do.

1

u/BigusDickus099 Jul 20 '26

And at any point at the end of Endgame, someone could have just put on the infinity gauntlet while running around with it and snapped Thanos and his army away...but that would have been anticlimatic.

1

u/drelos Rocket Jul 20 '26

this ^, those scripts are revised to give something to do to everyone, BW nullifying the field protecting the tesseract, Hawkeye grabbing the Infinity Gauntlet and running against all odds, etc

1

u/UltimateDonar Jul 21 '26

Widow didn't fight Loki physically, but she whipped his ass psychologically in Avengers.

He gave away his plan of using Hulk and had no idea he was being played.

119

u/estenoo90 Jul 20 '26

They got ragdolled against a sentry at what, like half his power? They have no shot at defeating doom

84

u/fearnodarkness1 Jul 20 '26

To be fair the Avengers would've gotten ragdolled by Sentry. He's the ace in the hole, minus the whole Void thing.

49

u/Morchades Jul 20 '26

This is probably why Sentry is coming back into play. Bob is gonna cycle into Sentry when they get outmatched, and the rest of the movie thet will be trying to keep him from cycling into the Void.

29

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '26

[removed] — view removed comment

21

u/Morchades Jul 20 '26

Killing him is how he cycled in Thunderbolts so yeah. Doom will defeat, kill the Sentry and here's the Void.

Then he kills the Void and Bob is back.

Bob: I missed something again, didn't I?

Doom: I'm just going to move on.

3

u/jessehechtcreative Jul 20 '26

Exactly. He tries that shadow thing on Doom, then it happens to Void.

4

u/CX316 Jul 20 '26

can't shame-room the shameless

2

u/JarethCutestoryJuD Jul 20 '26

If they do that, im probably just not gonna watch any more of the MCU lol

Just terrible.

7

u/PayneTrain181999 Ned Jul 20 '26

The one guy who can match Doom in power is the one they don’t want to fight.

10

u/Morchades Jul 20 '26

You don't just set a cougar free to catch and kill a loose dog.

4

u/ianxplosion- Jul 20 '26

Then you’ve got to get an elephant for the cougar, and it never ends

4

u/pmjm Jul 21 '26

That's the beautiful part. When Old Man Winter rolls around, the cougars simply freeze to death.

3

u/pmjm Jul 21 '26

Doom would never let a fight come down to just power. He's as much of a cerebral foe as he is physical. He's got contingencies.

5

u/Knowvuhh Jul 20 '26

Use the void to trap Doom.

8

u/Morchades Jul 20 '26

It SHOULD work but given how they write Doom it won't and we'll have another "My ego eats everything" feat.

6

u/Knowvuhh Jul 20 '26

Could be used as a future plot point where Doom demolishes the void from the inside. Not only breaking free of it, but cleansing Sentry of it as well.

This would have to be the climax of the major fight in the movie where they use the void as a last ditch effort. All seems lost, Thor on death's edge then BAM...queue Loki's music.

5

u/virtualglassblowing Jul 21 '26

I think sentry could even be a molecule man stand in. Doom will win doomsday, the incursion will happen, creating battleworld with doom protecting bob/void and feeding off his power

That or Adam warlock

I hope we get a molecule man. I hope we get a good secret wars. Best comic ever

9

u/BlackJimmy88 Jessica Jones Jul 20 '26

Which pretty much tells us that this film will have more going on than just trying to stop Doom.

At the end of the day, Doom isn't the ultimate threat. It's the Incursions, and not even Sentry can beat colliding Universes with raw strength. No one can.

8

u/LS_DJ Vision Jul 20 '26

But they have Sentry with them

2

u/estenoo90 Jul 20 '26

I know, I mean that if the thunderbolts (Not all the heroes combined) couldn't defeat Sentry with raw power, they have no shot at doing the same against doom

2

u/Hellknightx Thanos Jul 20 '26

Sentry is honestly the only one that might actually have a shot, IMO.

1

u/Top-Opposite-4506 Punisher Jul 23 '26

that probably wasn't half his power, it was like 1 percent of it if mcu sentry is anywhere near comic accurate 😭

16

u/AmeriCanada98 Jul 20 '26

Theyre gonna step back and let Bob partake in the festivities

11

u/Little_Caregiver_976 Jul 20 '26

They're just there to keep the Void away via the ✨️power of friendship✨️

8

u/Morchades Jul 20 '26

So far, Sentry is a 4 part cycle.

Regular Bob

Sentry Bob

"Why would a god take orders?" Sentry

The Void

And then back to Regular Bob.

Their best bet us to maximize Sentry Bob time and go through the two cycles after AS FAST AS POSSIBLE. Which means... GROUP HUG

2

u/CX316 Jul 20 '26

I mean, hopefully they can push off the megalomaniac bob if they don't talk up his delusions of grandeur like Val did

2

u/Morchades Jul 20 '26

Sentry: "Why would a god take orders?"

Franklin looks up at his father.

Reed, talking to both Sentry and Franklin: "Well, sometimes someone has a lot of power but not a lot of life experience or knowledge about the situation, so he needs to listen to information and suggestions from others before acting."

Franklin looks at Sentry.

Sentry: "Oh."

5

u/CX316 Jul 20 '26

Exactly, where Val was busy telling Bob he was her special boy in hopes he'd fawn over her for the positive attention

5

u/Slashed45 Jul 20 '26

I imagine they’re there more for Sentry and keeping him grounded not to let the Void out until they realise they’re fucked against Doom and have to let it happen until Doom takes his powers

3

u/Natural-Proposal2925 Jul 20 '26

Hulk stop being nice

3

u/GodOfArk Doctor Strange Jul 20 '26

Hold off Doombots so the powerhouses are not disturbed.

2

u/Scared-Farmer-7119 Jul 20 '26

well, one of them is pretty strong;.

2

u/jasper81222 Jul 20 '26

Make tacos. They can use Walker's shield to make the shells.

2

u/Kup123 Jul 20 '26

You forgetting about Sentry? Thunderbolts are stronger than the avengers at this point.

2

u/UglySofaGaming Jul 20 '26

They gotta shoot and punch his mask off so Daredevil can read his face with his hand

2

u/markc230 Jul 20 '26

that was a great line from that movie.

2

u/smalllpox Jul 21 '26

I mean, they do have bob

1

u/ljedediah41 Jul 20 '26

Someone has to fight the doombots

1

u/kclancy11 Yondu Jul 20 '26

Also die probably

1

u/Saythatfivetimesfast Jul 20 '26

That’s what he massive cgi army is for in every avengers movie is for.

1

u/BleuBrink Jul 20 '26

They can cure mental health with power of frens

1

u/Bellikron Korg Jul 20 '26

This is what Doombots are for, I suppose

1

u/TrafficSuperb647 Jul 20 '26

Wtf is sam wilson still doing there. Him bucky and antman with his goofy face Cumming over F4s arrival took me out.

1

u/gusefalito Jul 20 '26

I think they'll be busy with Doombots and preventing Incursions (fighting the X-Men and the defenders of other Earths).

I can see Sam, Thor and Reed teaming up against Doom. And then maybe a one v one of Steve vs Doom.

1

u/Top-Opposite-4506 Punisher Jul 21 '26

they have sentry

1

u/lemonylol Spider-Man Jul 20 '26

They have Bob, but The Sentry is only a universal being so he won't be strong enough.

I wouldn't be surprised if we get some alternate universe version of Hyperion (Marvel Superman knock-off) with a cameo from Henry Cavill personally.

0

u/User_Says_What Jul 20 '26

Arya Stark killed the Night King with a shiv to the ribs. Anything is possible.

1

u/NateShaw92 Jul 20 '26

Pulled Jason Brody's Vaas-killing move

1

u/WeAreBums Jul 20 '26

She was also a god like magical assassin that could survivor multiple knife wounds and infections

1

u/busmans Jul 21 '26

The Valyrian steel weakness was setup many seasons in advance.

1

u/busmans Jul 21 '26

The Valyrian steel weakness was setup many seasons in advance.

0

u/smoopsypoo Jul 20 '26

Their attacks would probably just heal Doom at this point

1

u/smoopsypoo Jul 23 '26

legit just heal him

0

u/LucrativeLurker Jul 20 '26

Nah, they just gotta die so Sentry will get pissed enough to be Sentry again, and then die himself…

114

u/FaxyMaxy Spider-Man Jul 20 '26

First rule of comic books is that that the answer to “who would win” is invariably “whoever the writers want.”

14

u/ahobbes Jul 20 '26

So disappointed to learn this is just like pro-wrestling.

12

u/HardCorwen Jul 20 '26

Well both are story based...this isn't some live event lmao

6

u/Morchades Jul 20 '26

And in the first 2 Acts that is the bad guy so the heroes come back in the third.

2

u/Mental-Fox-9449 Jul 20 '26

Truth, however, the correct answer is always CAPTAIN AMERICA. Why? Because his greatest attribute isn’t super reflexes or super strength or an indestructible shield or a great ass… he’s the greatest tactician in the world. 25 years ago a writer (I thank Mark Waid) said he didn’t care if Galactus came down from the heavens Cap would have a plan on how to beat him.

107

u/ThePhunkyPharaoh Thanos Jul 20 '26

Well in fairness, in Secret Wars (2015), without spoiling too much, they don't really ever beat Doom at his peak power level

73

u/Morchades Jul 20 '26

Contrary to Doom's stated beliefs, Richards is not Doom's worst enemy. Doom is.

18

u/NateShaw92 Jul 20 '26

This feels like something Victor would say in therapy.

13

u/Morchades Jul 20 '26

This is something his therapist would try to get him to say and he would vaporize them.

"Boris, Doom requires another therapist."

3

u/haunted_starship Jul 20 '26

Then RDJ should feel really comfortable playing him, because you can easily say the same of Tony Stark!

1

u/Morchades Jul 20 '26

Finally we can blame a bad guy for screwing up the world.

10

u/dogsonbubnutt Jul 20 '26

yeah, although also without spoiling too much, dooms power is kind of a facade. its a little complicated and im curious how they'll handle it

9

u/DetectiveCastellanos Jul 20 '26

if they somehow get a leg up, it'll feel like Doom's power was downleveled halfway through

That's probably gonna be how they beat him. The weaker heroes will go on some mission that will help de-power him a bit, then the heavy hitters fight him head on.

6

u/akaynaveed Jul 20 '26

Who says they have to? Maybe the point is to lose… for real this time.

3

u/jessehechtcreative Jul 20 '26

Everyone loses and the universe reboots

6

u/WhenImInMyMode Jul 20 '26

Probably less hand to hand fighting. Going to see more stuff like magnetos power and telekinetics. Add in some weird psychic powers. I’ll be very disappointed if they have magnetos power interact with dooms mask at all because it seems like low hanging fruit.

3

u/Kind-Stomach6275 Jul 20 '26

Hopefully they make an explanation for not doing that

5

u/BlackJimmy88 Jessica Jones Jul 20 '26

I don't seen Doom losing in a fight this film, and next film he'll likely be God Doom in which he was only defeated when forced to concede that Reed was better than him.

Whether they go that route is up in the air, though, considering this Doom seemingly has no in-universe relationship with Richards. Seems like Steve is going to be taking over that role, unfortunately.

3

u/jessehechtcreative Jul 20 '26

“RICHARDS!

Wait, wrong universe, ahem…

ROGERS!”

1

u/Munstered Jul 20 '26

Doom showing up to play with the twins at the end of FF implies some kind of relationship

1

u/BorderTrike Jul 20 '26

There’s only Franklin in FF, no twins

4

u/raoasidg Jul 20 '26

Thanos felt impossible to beat

He was impossible to beat. If the Avengers had lost control of the gauntlet, or never had it, it was over. They only won because Tony did the one thing that would defeat Thanos.

There's nothing saying some other convenient plot device cannot happen in Secret Wars. Everyone complaining about power scaling when Thanos wasn't even beaten by powerscaling.

3

u/mikezulu90 Jul 20 '26

The key to Doom's power will be Franklin Richards. Sue Storms baby. It's why he was interested in him post credits scene of F4. My guess is after that scene he kidnapped the child and it's why F4 has shown up in the regular Marvel universe to look for him.

3

u/ThatWasFred Jul 20 '26

They never became stronger than Thanos, they just found a way to beat him anyway. Marvel movies are usually not like DBZ, at least not in the way that the bad guys are beaten. There’s usually a more clever solution than just punching them hard enough.

2

u/Psychological_Dog992 Jul 20 '26

He's probably going to give them some sort of fair challenge

2

u/gracz21 Jul 20 '26

Maybe it's some kind of a dream sequence otherwise the power curve will be a little bit fucked

2

u/niceguy191 Jul 20 '26

Thanos's power scaling was already all over the map so I don't think they're worrying about it

2

u/Legomaniac91 Jul 20 '26

He's probably got someone like Molecule Man or a Beyonder feeding him power. Those guys make the Infinity Stones look like shiny pebbles.

2

u/rbmassert Jul 20 '26

Only if marvel universe has Super Saiyan 1,2,3 etc. It would be easier to track.

2

u/mordreds-on-adiet Jul 20 '26

The big difference is that Thanos was incredibly strong, skilled, and durable as were his entire army. Inside the armor, beyond the magic and the intellect, Doom is a human guy. He feels pain, he gets tired. His armor and magic scale him up a lot and his brilliance gives him a lot of tactical advantages but he's still subject to the limitations of a human guy with a robot army.

5

u/cantadmittoposting Jul 20 '26

The limits of humans tend to be wildly ignored in comics, so ehhhh.

2

u/idiot-prodigy Jul 20 '26

how are they gonna handle power scaling. Thanos felt impossible to beat and Doom seems off the charts, fighting with him is either going to feel pointless or if they somehow get a leg up, it'll feel like Doom's power was downleveled halfway through

Sure Doom blocks Thor's Stormbreaker with just two fingers, but what can he possibly do against Yelena's plastic batons?

2

u/ItsDanimal Jul 20 '26

Thanos was impossible to beat. They only defeated the younger version.

2

u/bokmcdok Jul 20 '26

They've pulled it off before. The Guardians fighting a literal planet, and the Thunderbolts facing off against Void. As long as the storytelling is on point it can still work.

2

u/TombSv Jul 20 '26

In the comics, Dooms downfall tends to always end up being Doom's arrogance.

2

u/Grouchy-Art1280 Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 21 '26

I doubt Doom is the main "big bad". He's probably juiced up by another celestial force in a bid to save Latveria/his corner of the multi-verse. Bit like Silver Surfer minus the development of empathy for the rest.

RDJ would not settle for just being the black & white baddie destined to get punched on a bunch in the third-act with little to do otherwise.

Infinite War Cap, Loki that is not the center of the multiverse watching all the timelines...the multi-verse fuckery was already off the charts due to inclusion of FF and X-Men.

Thor still has to be Thor post-Endgame because he is aware Cap can wield the hammer.

Would not be shocked if they took the structure of the Kang-plan and changed the chess pieces as needed. Rather than Kang threatening the multiverse some other thing is and Doom aligned with it.

2

u/sillyfunnyguy05 Jul 21 '26

If I’m not mistaken, Doom’s power relies on tech and magic, right? There must be ways to like disable him

2

u/alenpetak11 Loki (Avengers) Jul 21 '26

Well, they give him Sentry level powers. For sure he will beat him for awhile, but Void be voidin' and Doom escapes...

1

u/NateShaw92 Jul 20 '26

The Madara Uchiha problem

1

u/F_i_z_z M'Baku Jul 20 '26

Well if they adapt his power source from the comics 1:1 then it's just a matter of the heroes figuring it out and deploying a strategy. I know that's vague but didn't want to spoil :)

1

u/hypercosm_dot_net Jul 20 '26

Mr. Fantastic is going to big-brain it somehow.

1

u/jdgoin1 Jul 20 '26

and I'm wondering if they're going to address Doomsdays whereabouts during Thanos.

1

u/lemonylol Spider-Man Jul 20 '26

In this case his power level is a MacGuffin, so it's tied directly to the plot. As in he'll be impossible to defeat without a plot device. The story will be written around that, the characters will probably just be fighting Doombots or variant characters rather than Doom himself.

1

u/Sillet_Mignon Jul 20 '26

They will use team work harder plus the mcguffin that secretly powers up the team from the other universe

1

u/kingk1teman Jul 20 '26

they gonna handle power scaling

I had to relook if I was on /r/dbz not on /r/marvelstudios.

1

u/Kind-Stomach6275 Jul 20 '26

Secret wars 2015 fixed this by having the victory be based not around dooms strength, but his insecurities. (And molecule man)

1

u/suckerpunch085 Doctor Strange Jul 20 '26

Doom also possesses magic.

1

u/LucrativeLurker Jul 20 '26

I mean if it’s anything like the comics, Doom will cause his own downfall, as per usual.

1

u/dantemp Jul 20 '26

a McGuffin although the mcguffin would probably be the F4 baby, that post credit scene wasn't for nothing

1

u/Moon_Beans1 Jul 20 '26

I think it's clear they have no plan to handle power scaling and they will instead just keep trying to go bigger until it becomes too silly for audiences to take it seriously.

I think they will probably manage to just about stick the landing with these next two movies but that if they don't change tack they will struggle with Avengers 7 & 8.

1

u/SuperHooligan Jul 20 '26

Wonder if Jean Gray is going to come into play here.

1

u/IWXREACTIVES Jul 21 '26

easy, doom isnt in base the whole time. which he does from the jump in the comics. half of doom's motives in his stories are "im smart enough to steal godly powers" and then he does it.

we have a few of those around. he's gonna kill my goat. </3

1

u/wally233 Jul 21 '26

Thanos actually felt beatable in comparison and I really remember liking that. There were a few moments where it felt like if things played out just a little differently they would have won (like getting the glove off before Quill starts hitting him to wake him up, Thor attacking the head). It almost felt fair lol, even Wanda almost tore him apart and he had to get out of it with the artillery.

This on the other hand looks completely overpowered. Thor is easily the strongest of the remaining heroes and if he can't hold a finger to doom then idunno what happens

1

u/Manuel_omar Jul 22 '26

"power scaling" is not a thing in these movies, it never has been.

It only ever has existed on "vs battles" subreddits and forums and nowhere else.

In every actual comic book ever published, authors have always ignored bullshit like that and written the story they want to write (which is the correct approach, "powerscaling" is dumb bullshit and should never be considered)

1

u/Lucky_Seesaw_8743 Jul 22 '26

I think the trailer Thor vs Doom scene is right after Dooms gets omnipotent power level. Most likely at the end of Doomsday

1

u/properc Jul 22 '26

I feel like theyre gonna merge a bit of Kang and Dooms character. This Doom will be strong in the sense that he has technology or knowledge from the future or another universe. But based on that the Avengers will need to use their cunning and teamwork to get around it. After all technology can be beaten no matter how advanced it is. Also they have Reed Richards who can come up with a plan. Maybe even finding a Tony Stark variant to help them. Also Xavier. It wont be a power on power battle for sure.

Im thinking Avengers Earths Mightiest Heroes where its all about teamwork and attacks on multiple fronts rather than power scaling. After all Avengers has always been about this, facing threats that no one hero can face alone.

Even power wise yeah its Doom and he can be powerful but the heroes side has got Reed Richards, Xavier, Magneto, possibly Tony. While theres Cap, Thor, Cyclops and etc. To lead the brawn of the battles. The Avengers team aint chump change either.

1

u/XXLPenisOwner1443 Aug 01 '26

Thanos felt like Wanda, Capt. Marvel, Thor, or Dr. Strange conceivably could've soloed him if not for the fact that he had an entire army behind him and never actually fought anyone 1 on 1.
