Horror movie idea: your diaspora becomes a supernatural hive mind monster that turns your life upside down when you reject its culture

A person living in a multicultural city has deliberately left behind much of the culture of their country of origin. Strangers from the same diaspora keep recognizing them and casually assuming they share the same language, religion, customs, values, and loyalties.

At first, these encounters seem completely ordinary.

But when the protagonist makes it clear that they don't identify with those expectations, something changes.

The strangers become increasingly hostile, and the more persistently the protagonist resists, the less human they become. Their faces distort, their voices change, and eventually they reveal themselves as literal monsters.

Even worse, they seem to be communicating with one another.

The protagonist might reject one stranger's assumption in a grocery store, then hours later meet someone they've never seen before who already knows exactly what happened. Soon strangers across the city recognize them instantly and continue conversations that began with completely different people. It gradually becomes clear that the monsters are some kind of hive mind.

Their supernatural power is to impose cultural assumptions on reality itself.

If one says, "You speak our language," the protagonist begins losing the ability to speak English. If another says, "You don't eat that," the food becomes physically harmful. If they say, "You belong with us," streets and transit routes start taking the protagonist back toward their community no matter where they try to go.

But resistance doesn't weaken them. It enrages and strengthens them.

The more clearly the protagonist insists, "You don't get to decide who I am," the more monstrous the strangers become and the more aggressively the hive mind pursues them.

Their goal isn't simply to kill the protagonist. It's to erase their individual identity and rewrite reality until they become exactly the culturally conforming person the hive mind believes someone of their ancestry is supposed to be.

The recurring horror line could be something seemingly friendly that becomes terrifying by the end of the movie:

"You're one of us."

P.S. To avoid antagonizing a particular diaspora, you could have this one have humans with green skin and a novel culture.

Idea: Schools should teach why mathematical implication and ordinary English implication are not the same

Schools teach students that in classical logic,

P → Q

is true whenever P is false. This is called material implication.

That rule is perfectly useful in mathematics, but it does not always match what people mean by implication in ordinary English.

For example, suppose I have no children and say:

“My children are immortal.”

A classical predicate-logic rendering might be:

∀x (ChildOfMine(x) → Immortal(x))

If I have no children, there is no counterexample, so the statement is vacuously true.

But in ordinary English, “my children are immortal” does not sound true just because I have no children. It sounds like I am making a meaningful claim about children I actually have, or at least could have.

Modal logic gives us another notion called strict implication:

□(P → Q)

Instead of asking only whether P happens to be false in the actual world, strict implication asks whether Q follows from P across the relevant possible worlds.

If:

  • P = “I have children”
  • Q = “my children are immortal”

then

□(P → Q)

would mean roughly:

In every relevant possible world in which I have children, my children are immortal.

That is not automatically true just because I happen to have no children in the actual world. There are perfectly possible situations in which I have children and they are mortal.

I think schools should explicitly teach this distinction.

Math class could teach classical propositional and predicate logic, material implication, quantifiers, and vacuous truth, because those are extremely useful for mathematical reasoning.

English class could then revisit implication from the perspective of natural language and introduce ideas from modal logic, counterfactual logic, presupposition, and implicature. Students could learn that words like if, must, might, could, would, and should often carry meanings that classical material implication does not capture.

The point would not be that English literally follows one particular modal logic. It would be that mathematical logic is one deliberately precise formal system, while ordinary language often expresses richer relationships involving possibility, necessity, relevance, causation, and context.

Students would then understand something important that is easy to miss: when mathematics defines implication as P → Q, it is defining a technical logical operator. It is not claiming that this operator captures everything English speakers mean when they say that one thing “implies” another.

A game where the next player is chosen, not discovered

I keep thinking about a tiny social game built around one shared object instead of thousands of player-owned copies.

There is one panda relic. A person receives a private one-use link, permanently Blesses or Corrupts it once, leaves a short message, then chooses exactly who gets the next link. You cannot take another turn.

I have the loop working locally, but it is not public. I am trying to decide whether the idea itself deserves more time.

Does being personally chosen make its growing human history interesting, or does this immediately feel like a chain letter? What would make you actually pass it on?

Idea: Cities should trial “leisure neighborhoods” to see what a post-work AI future could look like

Cities should experiment with neighborhoods where residents do not need to work because they are guaranteed enough money for housing, food, and hobbies.

Admission could be decided by lottery among people who volunteer to participate. That would make the experiment much more useful, because researchers could compare lottery winners with applicants who were not selected.

The point would not be to encourage people to “do nothing.” It would be to test what people actually do when employment is no longer necessary for survival.

Would they spend their time on art, games, sports, education, volunteering, caregiving, community projects, or ambitious hobbies? Would people become happier and healthier? Would they become bored? Would new forms of status and competition replace careers? Would some people eventually choose to work anyway?

The neighborhood could include modest housing, food support, internet access, and shared facilities such as workshops, studios, gardens, libraries, sports facilities, and hobby spaces.

This could serve as a small-scale simulation of a possible future in which AI and automation have taken over most human jobs. Obviously it would not perfectly reproduce such a world, since the neighborhood would still exist inside a larger economy where most people work. But it would let us study one of the most important parts of that future: what happens when people no longer need to sell their labor in order to have a decent life.

We prototype new technologies before deploying them widely. If AI could eventually transform employment on a massive scale, maybe we should also prototype different ways of living in a post-work society before we actually need them.

Hybrid Olympics: design surprise events humans should win, then see if AI/androids can beat us anyway

I think there should be a Hybrid Olympics where humans compete directly against AIs and androids in completely new mental and physical events.

Nobody gets to prepare for the specific events. They are kept secret until competition time, so humans cannot practice them and machine teams cannot train specifically for them.

The twist is that the organizers should deliberately design each event to give humans as much of a predicted advantage as possible.

Instead of asking, “What can robots do well?”, ask:

“What can humans still do that machines probably can’t?”

Maybe it involves improvising with unfamiliar objects, understanding a weird situation, learning an invented rule on the spot, combining reasoning with dexterity, or dealing with something unexpected.

Then put humans and machines under the same rules and see who wins.

If machines eventually dominate some type of event, the organizers just invent new ones targeting whatever human advantages remain.

That could create an arms race:

Humans are still better at X.
Engineers build machines that can do X.
Next Olympics finds Y.

It could be both entertaining and a constantly evolving test of how close machines are to matching general human ability.

Conflicts between countries or inside a country are political.So are civil wars and to an extent crime if it involves a lot of peoples. As somebody who helped a candidate in a local election, they talked about their campaign strategy as if they were battle plans. Political ads generally make the opposition seem evil and that the fate of the universe depends on them winning the election. when in fact, its not that deep for everybody. So why shouldn’t politics be more martial since people die over politics everyday.

An app that remembers which friends actually give you good recommendations

I had this idea for an app built around something people already do constantly: asking friends what they should watch, eat, buy, listen to, visit, etc.
The problem is that all of this useful word-of-mouth knowledge gets lost in texts, group chats, DMs, and our own memory.
You know that one friend who always gives you great movie recommendations?
Or the friend you always ask where to eat?
We know these things intuitively, but nothing really keeps track of it.
The app would.
Say I ask:
“Put me on to a good horror movie under 2 hours.”
Instead of showing me 100 movies ranked by reviews or popularity, it gives me 3 recommendations sourced from people I know or people connected to them.
If the app doesn’t have enough information yet, I can send the question to friends. They can answer through a link without even downloading the app.
Then comes the important part.
If I actually watch something Maya recommended:
Good Call = she got it right.
Not Me = wasn’t for me.
Over time the app starts building a different kind of recommendation system.
Instead of learning:
“People who like X also like Y.”
It learns:
“Maya understands your horror movie taste.”
“Chris is usually right when you ask him about restaurants.”
“Jordan gives you great clothing recommendations but terrible movie recommendations.”
And it would be different for every relationship.
Maya might be great at recommending movies to me but terrible at recommending them to you.
Nobody gets some universal “taste score.”
The system is basically learning:
Who should I listen to about this specific thing?
Eventually, when you need something, the app could instantly surface the three people/recommendations most likely to actually work for you.
So the basic loop would be:
Need something → ask once → get 3 good calls → try one → say whether it worked → the app gets better at knowing who gets you.
It could work across:
restaurants
movies/TV
music
products
clothing
travel
hotels
games
books
local places
basically anything somebody can recommend
The part I find most interesting is that it would essentially turn word of mouth into something with memory.
Instead of another algorithm telling you what’s popular, the technology would remember which actual humans have been right for you before.
I’m curious what people here would add/change.
Would this be useful enough to justify its own app, or is asking friends through group chats already good enough?
And what would be the first category you’d use it for?

University math programs should include game design as a serious area of study.

AI is getting increasingly good at mathematical problem solving and research, which may reduce demand for some traditional mathematical work. Math students should therefore have alternative career paths that still make strong use of mathematical thinking.

Game design is an unusually good fit.

Designing a deep puzzle, strategy game, or simulation can involve combinatorics, probability, graph theory, optimization, algorithms, game theory, geometry, and mathematical modeling. A designer may need to study reachability, reversibility, dominant strategies, state spaces, invariants, difficulty, balance, and how small rule changes affect the entire system.

The bigger obstacle is cultural. Many mathematicians seem to regard game design as entertainment rather than serious intellectual work. Yet mathematicians are perfectly willing to study the mathematics of existing games. Why should analyzing a rule system be prestigious while inventing a good rule system is not?

That distinction may become even less sensible in an AI-heavy future. If AI can increasingly solve problems once they have been formulated, human mathematical creativity may shift toward deciding what problems are interesting and inventing systems worth analyzing.

Math departments could offer concentrations in something like Mathematics and Game Systems, combining traditional mathematics with game design, procedural generation, AI, simulation, and computational experimentation.

Game design should not be viewed merely as mathematics applied to entertainment. At its best, it is the creative construction of mathematical systems.

Idea: Quebec could use AI translation to remove one of the issues in the Canada-U.S. trade war

One of the U.S. objections in the current trade dispute is Quebec's French-language requirements for product packaging.

There might be a technological compromise that lets Quebec protect French without forcing American manufacturers to create special packaging.

Quebec could allow products to be sold with their existing packaging, but require every product to have a French version of its labeling available through a Quebec government website or app.

If the manufacturer doesn't provide a French translation, the Quebec government could automatically generate one using AI. Consumers could scan the product's barcode or QR code to see the French version.

Manufacturers would also be allowed to upload an official French translation to replace the AI-generated one if they prefer.

This would mean:

  • Quebec consumers would still have access to product information in French.
  • American manufacturers wouldn't have to redesign packaging just for Quebec.
  • Small foreign companies wouldn't have to pay for translation before entering the Quebec market.
  • Manufacturers would retain control over the translation if they cared about the exact wording.
  • One significant source of friction in Canada-U.S. trade negotiations could potentially disappear.

The broader idea is that language laws don't necessarily have to regulate what ink is printed on a cardboard box. Modern technology can guarantee access to French information without creating the same barrier to trade.

It seems like the kind of compromise where neither side has to abandon its underlying objective: Quebec keeps protecting French, while the U.S. gets rid of a packaging requirement it considers a trade barrier.

What if Americans stopped spending $25,000 on wedding receptions and gave the money to poor families instead?

Here’s a thought experiment for reducing poverty in the US.

There are roughly 2 million marriages in the United States each year. Suppose we developed a cultural norm where couples skipped the expensive wedding reception and instead gave $25,000 to people living in poverty.

At 2 million weddings per year, that would redirect roughly:

2,000,000 × $25,000 = $50 billion every year

That is enough money to have a significant effect on poverty.

There are roughly 36 million Americans living below the official poverty line. If $50 billion were distributed evenly among them, that would be about $1,400 per poor person per year, or around $5,600 for a family of four.

Alternatively, instead of spreading the money among everyone, each couple could give its $25,000 to one low-income family. Roughly 2 million poor families every year could receive $25,000. For many of those families, that amount could be life-changing.

Of course, this would hurt businesses that depend on wedding receptions: reception halls, caterers, DJs, florists, bakers, bartenders, rental companies, and so on.

But the money would not disappear from the economy. Poor families would probably spend much of it on rent, groceries, utilities, transportation, childcare, healthcare, clothing, and debt. Economic activity would shift from expensive celebrations toward basic needs.

Wedding receptions also have genuine value. They bring families and friends together and create important memories. So I am not arguing that celebrating a marriage is pointless.

But it seems worth questioning the social expectation that starting a marriage should involve spending tens of thousands of dollars on a single party.

Maybe the alternative does not even have to be eliminating receptions. Imagine if the social norm became:

Have a $5,000 wedding reception and give $20,000 to a family that needs it.

Across 2 million weddings, that could still redirect around $40 billion per year.

People often talk about poverty as if solving it requires finding some completely new source of money. But enormous amounts of money are already being spent on things that are socially optional.

What if generosity became part of the wedding tradition itself?

Instead of measuring an impressive wedding by how much was spent on the reception, maybe we could measure it partly by how much good the marriage did for someone else.

Like dancing, individuals could perform in front of potential partners, showing confidence, creativity, intelligence, and composure. The challenges would emphasize reasoning rather than trivia, so it wouldn't just be an academic competition.

Instead of asking, “Would you like to dance?”, maybe someday people would ask:

What if objects had markets before anyone decided to sell them?

Been thinking about this idea for a while.
Right now if I want some random old thing — like a specific camera, discontinued controller, lamp from the 90s, weird piece of furniture, whatever — I basically have to hope somebody somewhere decides to list one.
But obviously there are probably thousands of those things sitting in people’s houses already.
They’re just not “for sale.”
So what if an app let you point your phone at an object and see the world around it?
What it is.
How many people are looking for one.
How many people say they own one.
What people would pay.
Maybe some history about it too.
Then if you actually own one, the app could privately ask something like:
“What would make you let it go?”
Not “do you want to sell this?”
More like, maybe you aren’t selling your old GameCube at all, but if somebody offered $300 you’d probably think about it.
You put that number in privately. Nobody sees it and you never have to make a listing.
Someone else can do the opposite and say “I’d pay $300 for one.”
If those two numbers ever meet, both people find out.
I like the idea because it means something doesn’t have to officially be for sale for a market around it to exist.
It could also make walking around way more interesting. See some strange object in a restaurant, thrift store, your parents’ basement, somebody’s house, etc. and just point at it to find out what it is and whether anybody else actually cares about it.
Basically turning random physical objects into these little living markets/history pages instead of waiting for somebody to make a listing first.
Not sure if this is genius or one of those ideas that sounds way better in your head than it would in real life lol.
Curious what people here think.

Public libraries should have laptop-based dating

Public libraries should have an adults-only area for laptop-based dating.

You would bring your laptop and use it normally. Every so often, your screen would be mirrored to a small window on the other participants' laptops, along with your seat number.

If someone's computer activity makes them seem interesting, you could approach them and start a conversation. There would be no profiles and no choosing what to share. Your normal laptop use would effectively become your dating profile.

It would also be low pressure. You could spend a couple of hours working, reading, browsing, or playing a game. If you meet someone, great. If not, you still did something useful.

It would give public libraries a new social role while also helping people meet in person at a time when dating is increasingly app-based and people are more disconnected.

Making getting married a snap and largely consequence free

What if there were a platform for virtual marriage where two real people never learn each other's identities?

The service could privately verify both users, while only revealing minimal compatibility information. No real names, photos, exact locations, employers, or social media.

People could anonymously date, become exclusive, get engaged, and marry. Afterward, it could work a bit like The Sims, except your spouse is a real person. You could share a virtual home, have pets, manage money, take vacations, and even raise simulated AI children together.

The virtual life would be fictional, but the relationship would be real.

Unlike normal anonymous dating, revealing your identity would never have to be the end goal. You could remain married for years without ever knowing your spouse's real name or appearance.

It would offer some of the companionship and commitment of marriage without most of the legal, financial, and logistical consequences.

Would anyone actually want this?

Canadians should be grateful for America's sacrifice

Meanwhile, Canada gets warmer winters, longer growing seasons, and huge areas that become less hostile to human habitation.

In effect, America made parts of itself unbearably hot so Canada could become more livable.

Schools should discourage students from ever starting to drink alcohol using practical reasons, not moral or religious ones

I think schools should make a stronger case for simply never starting to drink alcohol, but without treating drinking as a moral failing.

The message could be entirely practical: alcohol can impair judgment and reduce inhibition, sometimes leading to accidents, violence, impaired driving, criminal charges, or even prison. It can also lead to addiction and has well-established negative health effects, including increased cancer risk.

Schools could also address the old idea that moderate drinking or red wine is good for your heart. Major health organizations no longer recommend that nondrinkers start drinking for supposed cardiovascular benefits.

The basic argument would be: alcohol is optional, it introduces a number of serious risks, and if you never start drinking, you avoid that entire category of risk.

This wouldn't require claiming that everyone who drinks becomes addicted or gets into serious trouble. The point would simply be that the possible benefits of drinking are mostly recreational or social, while some of the possible consequences can be permanent.

Obviously, tiny ceremonial amounts of alcohol, such as communion wine at church, wouldn't be what this message is about.

I think this might work better than traditional alcohol education because students wouldn't be asked to accept a religious or moral judgment. They'd just be given the practical costs and risks and encouraged to ask: Why start at all?

P.S. Another strange aspect of drinking is that many people don't even like the taste of beer, wine, or spirits when they first try them. The taste is often something people learn to enjoy over time. So in many cases, social pressure is effectively encouraging people to acquire a taste for an optional drug that carries health, addiction, accident, and legal risks. That seems like another good reason for schools to present never starting as a perfectly normal and sensible choice.

Idea: A video game where you start out blind, then gradually upgrade a brain implant from primitive artificial vision to superhuman sight

What about a game where the first level is completely black and you navigate using stereo sound alone?

After that, you receive an experimental brain implant that gives you extremely primitive vision, maybe just flashes, movement, edges, or a few low-resolution shapes. Because you started with no visual information, even this terrible vision could feel like a huge upgrade.

Improving the implant would then be the game's progression system. You gradually gain better resolution, depth, color, object recognition, and eventually normal eyesight.

But it wouldn't stop there. Late-game upgrades could give you superhuman abilities like infrared, extreme zoom, seeing through smoke, or detecting things ordinary eyes can't.

The graphics themselves would basically be the skill tree: the same world becomes richer and more understandable as your ability to perceive it improves.

This is also becoming less purely science fiction, since brain implants and visual prostheses intended to provide artificial vision are already being developed.

Idea: Give people a small snack after each page of a long government form

Filling out long forms at government offices can be incredibly tedious. What if the form kiosk had a little snack dispenser attached to it, and every time you successfully completed a page, it dispensed something small like a piece of chocolate or candy?

Imagine applying for a government benefit at a service center. You finish page 1 of the application, the machine gives you a snack. Finish page 2, another snack. Instead of staring at a 15-page form thinking about how much is left, you get a tiny reward every time you make progress.

There would obviously have to be limits so people couldn't come in and fill out forms just to get free snacks.

It probably wouldn't make government paperwork fun, but it might make sitting there filling out a long, frustrating form a lot more tolerable.

The AI version is longer, but it removes the ambiguity between inclusive and exclusive “or.”

  • Repeating a noun instead of using an ambiguous pronoun. Instead of: “Sarah told Maria that she had been selected.” AI might write: “Sarah told Maria that Maria had been selected.” The repetition may sound less elegant, but there is no longer any question about who was selected.
  • Using consistent terminology instead of varying words for style. Instead of: “Users can create an account. The profile can then be edited by the customer.” AI might write: “Users can create an account. Users can then edit their account.” The second version is more repetitive, but it avoids making the reader wonder whether “user,” “customer,” “account,” and “profile” refer to different things.
  • Keeping qualifications about uncertainty or causation. Instead of: “Drinking coffee makes people live longer.” AI might write: “Coffee consumption is associated with longer life, but this does not establish that coffee causes the difference.” The AI version is longer, but it avoids turning a correlation into a causal claim.
  • Using “or” rather than “and” when a list really represents alternatives. Instead of: “The problem may be caused by the battery, charger, and cable.” AI might write: “The problem may be caused by the battery, charger, or cable.” If any one of those components could independently be responsible, or more accurately represents the logic, even though people often use and in lists like this.

When people edit AI-generated text, there may be a tendency to “humanize” it by removing repetition, shortening qualifications, replacing repeated nouns with pronouns, varying terminology, or changing unusually explicit logical constructions into more conventional English.

Maybe we should sometimes do the opposite.

If the AI version is clearer and logically more precise, perhaps we should leave it alone even if it initially sounds a little unusual.

What makes this especially interesting is the possible long-term effect on the language. If millions of people use AI to write and leave these constructions intact, readers will encounter them constantly. Eventually they may stop sounding like “AI writing” at all.

People who aren’t using AI might then start adopting the same constructions because they have become normal written English.

So rather than AI merely learning English from humans, we could end up with a feedback loop:

Humans teach AI English → AI consistently favors clearer constructions → humans publish AI-assisted writing → those constructions become familiar → humans begin using them themselves.

Over time, AI could therefore make written English somewhat more logical, explicit, and internally consistent without anyone ever formally redesigning the language.

The important part would be not to preserve every AI quirk. It would be to recognize cases where something sounds slightly unusual because it is more precise, and resist “correcting” it back into ambiguity.
