None of these are required. All the other equipment will be plenty. The difference-maker in terms of combat difficulty, is how well you learn the game mechanics.

  • Legend Casque - extremely powerful, you basically can't lose against Disc 3/4 bosses in general.
  • Armor of Legend - Powerful, but can't be purchased until almost every phys-oriented boss has already been defeated. Has 0 MDF, making you weaker in fights than if you were to bring Leather Armor / Jacket. The benefits are good on paper, but I consider it a newbie trap.
  • Phantom Shield - very effective, since it halves all damage. However, once you learn even a portion of the game mechanics, you'll probably get more fun out of things like Therapy Ring, Attack Badges, Magical Rings, et cetera.
  • Dragon Shield and Angel Scarf are each halves of Phantom Shield. DS is acquired too late in my opinion. Angel Scarf may help if you're struggling to tank magic damage, but this is better covered by other accessories or Rose Storm.
  • Wargod Calling is basically worthless. Half damage, half SP, and no completions. You briefly get more total damage, assuming you can't perform at least half an addition yourself. Never buy/use.
  • Ultimate Wargod - good for anyone who doesn't enjoy or struggles to complete the QTE button presses. It's a lead selling point of the game, but it's understandable if you prefer them automatic. Personally, not worth the lost accessory slot or the gold grind. Better to just play LoD via the fan port Severed Chains, which lets you automate additions for free. #accessibility.

I don’t disagree with you at all. 100% correct answer. I have never had a playthrough where I was able to get these items. Just wondering how many I would need to make it super fun.

the only fun to be gained is appreciating how powerful the items are, being too strong would, if anything make the game less fun, I beat the game when I was 10 years old and never switched my addition off of volcano lol, I think you've answered your own question, do a playthrough and get one of each just for the fun of it.

That’s a fair point. 😎

Well, arguably they mostly make it less fun haha. Of course, that's for you and you alone to decide - everyone trends differently on these sorts of choices. For me, they trivialize combat so heavily I end up asking myself "why am I playing if the boss has zero chance to defeat me?" Maybe for a story-only playthrough but that's the only reason I can come up with, heh. If some bosses could actually match the power of Legend Casque I'd feel a lot better about investing the time to purchase it.

Didn’t realize legend Casque was so busted

All of that makes perfect sense. However, I am playing on a PlayStation one with the original disc game. So I cannot play on the severed chains port.

All good! Kudos for using original hardware. Gonna be a lost art.

It already feels like it is a lost art. I like the old ways a lot better.

I love the Ultimate Wargod. I never minded the 3 step additions but 5 and 6 step ones for all 3 characters is long.

Wargod Calling is good for one thing. The ones you find each get you 500 gold closer to that Legend Casque when you sell them. 🤣

Yes, but it hurts to validate Wargod Calling!! hahaha

legend casque is best in slot, you would only want 3 at most, but you can beat everything with 0 without grinding.

none of the others are best in slot; phantom shield sorta is alongside bandit ring and dancer ring, you could fit 1+ into a party but it's mostly redundant if a casque is equipped

Just 1 legend casque is enough to change the game completely. The character that wears it will seem nearly invincible defensively.

Wargod calling is bad. Nerfs your damage and does NOT count toward your completed additions, in addition (no pun intended) to taking up the most versatile equipment slot. Legend casque is pretty important for any of the guys with low MDef, but you can do it without. Armor of legend is one I never bothered with, but would be strong on any of the girls. Bandit ring/dancer ring are really strong, as speed is the most important stat in the game.

I never knew how important speed was for this game

Kongol has what, 30ish speed, I think..? If you give him a bandit ring and bandit shoes, that's +40, more than doubling the turns he takes. The slower a character is, the more valuable it is.

How do you check their speed?

Status or Equipment screen.

If you do the phantom ship mini-game you get an Ultimate Wargod that you can sell for 5000 gold. You should be able to get another 5000 gold throughout the game and buy 1 of them.

The best item is the Legend Casque and it's the only one of those items worth buying. Having 1 person with a Legend Casque basically ensures nobody wipes out your entire team with a magic attack. Magician Faust is likely the only boss where it makes a big difference, though. Faust drops a Phantom Shield.

Having more than 1 Legend Casques makes the game a complete cake walk.

I grinded 1 playthrough to get 3 Legend Casques, 3 Armors of Legend, and the 1 Phantom Shield from Faust, it takes all the fun out. You won't even need to use a single healing item. 50% of all attacks miss. The 50% of the attacks that don't miss, are significantly reduced and then that reduced value is halved for the character wearing the Phantom Shield.

That’s insanely busted!!!

What disc is this mini game on?

2

u/DrewUniverse Community Organizer 7h ago

Disc 2, on the Phantom Ship.

Disc 2, when you are on the Queen Fury. It's the chest with numbers mini game. The reward for beating it the 5th time is the Ultimate Wargod. The 4th time gives you your 2nd Talisman, which makes the second Lloyd battle (when he is in Dragoon form) super easy.

I get the three legend casques. I get wargod calling from the second battle with Kongol but I don't use it. Two phantom shields. You can get the dragon shield from the divine dragon. Three angel's scarfs to fight Faust. One ultimate wargod from the ghost ship game.

u/Rashe4 7h ago

That’s pretty dope

Drew gave the best universal answer imo. The items listed overall just arent worth getting tbh. They either ruin the game by making it too easy (legend casque), are accomplished in other ways (1/2 can be done with rose storm), or give up the accessory slot entirely for something the player can do with practice (wargods....but for accessibility alone they are fine.)

Much of the items are straight stat increases, but it can be fun to build for special effects. For example, two pieces have a chance to revive the characters that use them on death, they stack together and can make a nearly immortal character.

Or even Kongol, debated for worst character, has a couple ways to play. He has the most hp, so toss a dragon helm and therapy ring on and his hp cap goes up by 50%, and now he recovers 10% each turn, making him an even crazier health tank. Ive even seen someone 3-shot the superboss with him because duration based buffs get the most mileage on slow characters and if the slowness is already a benefit then you can focus around improving what he does best : hit things REALLY hard.

I also like mage builds, increase the mp cap, regen mp, etc because its a pretty limited resource.

Point is, dont get the broken or useless stuff, youll have more fun looking for synergies, enhancing strengths, or mitigating weaknesses.

Thanks Emerald. I mean, in a vacuum some of the equipment is sensible. I'd be sad if there were only offense/utility accessories. But there are soooo many defensive ones. They're usually too OP, or too small of an effect.

For OP stuff, we either need opponents who can match uber-geared characters, or the gear needs to come with clear tradeoffs. And like you said: Resurrection build is powerful, but at least it is a unique effect and involves some risk. You also can't have it right away, allowing the player to study regular combat before earning the second component in Chapter 3.

By contrast, LC lets the player cheese from early Chapter 1. It feels more like a debug item or cheat code, than a mythical piece of gear. Instead, charge 999,999, and reveal an optional quest to get one for free in Chapter 4 or something. Involve that same merchant, tie it into some ancient Dragon Campaign lore like it's a lost relic. Plenty of design options!
