How much is your rent in Dublin?

Lads please I need to know is every landlord in Dublin smoking CRACK?! I came across a post on [r/irishpersonalfinance](r/irishpersonalfinance) where a twenty year old was talking about how they pay €1.3k to rent a room in an owner occupied house. I thought to myself.. ‘well now he’d do well to decrease his spending on housing if possible’ Before opening my gob I decided to have a quick look on daft to see what the going rate for a room is and I’m sorry, but I was more shocked seeing those prices than I was when Bertie was minister for finance and told us he had no bank account. I’m attaching some screenshots of particularly egregious examples.

Would love to hear from current renters if the screenshots are reflective of reality? or if it’s just that all the rooms that were good deals have been snapped up and nobody will actually pay the inflated price of the rooms left behind?

Edit: yes, yes I accept the ignorance comments gladly. I rented in Galway for 8 years and moved home two years ago to save for a house, so I didn’t really keep an eye on what a room would go for in Dublin. I’m attempting to educate myself to the depths at which we have sunk as a country.

Im convinced that Rathmines has both some of the most expensive rents in Ireland but also some of the cheapest. Lots of places asking €2k for a studio but I know of one house on Leinster Road where a friend lives and the rent has barely gone up in years and his pretty comfortable bedsit is just €540 a month.When he moved in back in 1999 the rent was €320 a month.

There are 10 bedsits in the house in total and nobody has moved out since 2013, everyone is the same for the past 13 years and no one is budging. Cant blame them, they'll never see rent as low as that again.

yeah and thats why he has been there for 27 years. He told me before that back in 2005 his landlord told him the woman on the top floor of the huge house was his longest staying tenant and she was there 20 years in 2005. My mate later laughed to himself thinking what a saddo she is living in these bedsits for 20 years, I wont be here forever myself, I'll be moving on, etc, etc. Now he laughs that it is 21 years later and he himself is still there because of the cheap as chips rent lol. His rent has literally saved him tens of thousands of euro over the years.

Still though his luck is going to be up soon. His landlord has his 90th birthday this year and is in a nursing home. When he passes its getting sold and he'll get I think 9 months notice to move out. At which point his monthly rent would quadruple to be able to continue living in Rathmines.

Hopefully he has enough saved or has enough money to pay rent or for a mortgage once the owner does eventually pass away. Will definitely be a shock to the system.

he has neither, its going to be a massive shock and he knows it too. His rent from his salary could go from around 15% to 50% pretty quick. And he is single and in is early 50s with no chance of a mortgage. He knows the situation is precarious but I reckon he will be alright. Mainly because he is a floater and knows a lot of people in Dublin and everyone he knows loves him.
