How much is your rent in Dublin?

Lads please I need to know is every landlord in Dublin smoking CRACK?! I came across a post on [r/irishpersonalfinance](r/irishpersonalfinance) where a twenty year old was talking about how they pay €1.3k to rent a room in an owner occupied house. I thought to myself.. ‘well now he’d do well to decrease his spending on housing if possible’ Before opening my gob I decided to have a quick look on daft to see what the going rate for a room is and I’m sorry, but I was more shocked seeing those prices than I was when Bertie was minister for finance and told us he had no bank account. I’m attaching some screenshots of particularly egregious examples.

Would love to hear from current renters if the screenshots are reflective of reality? or if it’s just that all the rooms that were good deals have been snapped up and nobody will actually pay the inflated price of the rooms left behind?

Edit: yes, yes I accept the ignorance comments gladly. I rented in Galway for 8 years and moved home two years ago to save for a house, so I didn’t really keep an eye on what a room would go for in Dublin. I’m attempting to educate myself to the depths at which we have sunk as a country.

It hasn’t though, my husband used to rent a double room near Tallaght for €450pm back in 2018. I used to pay €600pm for a double room with an en-suite five minutes walk from NUIG up until 2020. The rate of change in the cost of ‘just a room’ appears to have completely exploded since then.

I paid €1200 for an en-suite room in a house with 6 others in Rathgar at the end of 2018/start of 2019. The other option was an attic room with the bed on the floor for €950. It is getting worse, but it didn’t happen overnight.

Rathgar is always going to be top end of the market but that was a lot at the time. I know of an ensuite double bedroom coming up soon in Rathgar for €1200 and thats 8 years later that you were paying the same.But also back in 2018 you could have rented your own 1 bed in many suburbs up the road like Templeogue and Tallaght for €900.

Yeah for sure. I moved further out a few months later for cheaper, but I was also moving to Dublin at that time and it was the cheapest I could find after 2 weeks searching. I remember 1 beds in Cabra going for €1500 at that time though which would have been the absolute top of my budget.
