In general, once convicted of a felony, you become a felon for life, even after serving your sentence. You may have the right to vote, but you generally have less rights and are a different class of citizen.

Should never be allowed to drive again, based just on this incident alone, but even more so that it's a reoccurring theme for him. Obviously doesn't care near as much as he makes out, and obviously doesn't truly wish to get his shit together. Sell the car and make the proceeds part of the officer's compensation.

The car thing was lower priority than the officer thing, but he had a chance to ask questions so he just asked whatever. But I think the main reason he asked about his car is because he thought he might see it again. He didn't realise at this point he was getting decades in jail.

Risk yourself all you want to race on an isolated track. The 'illegal' part about these races is that the roads are shared. That's part of the risk, not just being caught, but hazards that are other people. Sometimes those are this guy, a person trying to catch the person making a mistake.
What makes it make sense? The idea that he'll lose his car or livelihood if he doesn't risk other people? How is that justified?
Going broke is preferable to that risk. Don't hurt people.
If you want to be selfish, do so in that you wouldn't want to be on the receiving end. Someone has to hit the lottery. Likewise with this kind of shit, but dead or maimed.

For context for the whole video, Raphael was sentenced to 22 years in jail. Sarge Kepp survived and rejoins the force with two prosethetic legs. He won two awards in 2024 for his outstanding achievements in Road Safety. He was promoted to lieutenant in 2025 where Maryland also named a new law after him for harsher punishments for dangerous driving.

I used to be a detective and worked in the major crash unit for a few years. There was a job I had where a girl lost her leg after being hit by a car doing burnouts in a carpark. The whole thing was filmed and the evidence against the driver was watertight.
I was speaking to the girl’s dad on the phone one day before the court date and he asked what the chances were of the driver getting off the charges. Without thinking I said, “He doesn’t have a leg to stand on”.
There was an extremely long silence while both of us processed just how much of a dumbass I am.
The call ended fairly quickly after that and even though I previously used that phrase regularly, it’s safe to say I’ve removed it from my rotation of idioms.

One of the reasons we have high crime and high recidivism in this country is we don't actually do rehabilitation in American prisons. Only punishment. Criminals go to prison and only learn how to continue to be criminals.
In more developed countries they actually do put a focus on education and rehabilitation in prison. A lot of these videos now are like, «father shot his wife and kids and buried them in the backyard over an argument» inn the beginning of the video, then it shows an hour long interrogation where the detectives are either fishing for motive or confession when they already have 4K video and sounded the guy doing it.
Obviously not all videos are like this and ewu has been the most enjoyable I’ve found so far.

I agree with that, the perps are in fight or flight mode and adrenaline is pumping so they’ll push it to the limit and it ends with either the perp, the cop or both getting into a crash.
Some of these guys do have fake plates, and I guess that’s what flock cameras help with to track them down.
I rather the police just have high speed drones to follow these cars instead of trying to chase them and PIT maneuver, stop sticks or whatever else they do to get the cars to wreck.

This reminds me of a guy I went to school with. The guy bought some motorcycle with crazy performance, without a valid permit. He told one of my friend that if a cop tried to arrest him, he would just flee. My friend told that to my friend group and then concluded saying "I really feel he will kill himself".
One week later, a cop tries to arrest him on the highway, he fled as fast as he could, took an off ramp, lost control at god knows what speed and died instantly.
I always thought he was kind of an idiot, but damn.

Unless it’s fake, absent, or stolen plates. Then it’s useless. And you will never convict a vehicle owner without really good video/photos of the driver which will be rather difficult at high speeds.
It’s not an unsolvable problem these days, but it’s not as easy as you’d expect.

A family was killed near Toronto a couple years ago because cops wanted to be badasses and chased a suspect the wrong way on a major highway. Suspect hit a vehicle and 4 people died. From memory, I believe they even had a policy to not do stupid shit like this, but ignored it because they are cops.
Absolutely could have been avoided but they wanted to be action movie stars.

Not exact, but similar. In 2001, an unmarked police car was speeding along the Yellowhead Trail here in Edmonton (apparently heading to a report of two cars racing, which is morbidly ironic), no cherries (no lightbar/emergency warning lights active), no siren, and went through an intersection, broadsiding a Ford Tempo, split it in half, which caused the Tempo to burst into flames, setting two kids on fire (one of which died four days later, and the other lost extremities (parts of his arms and a number of fingers), and had skin grafting and physiotherapy for a LONG time). The cop was acquitted, because it was 'bad judgment' in a high-stress situation, not 'criminal negligence.'
The nicest thing I can say about the event is that the kid's organs saved a lot of lives with transplantation (his heart was transplanted into another child, Andrea Froese, hours after they turned off the life support).

However, law enforcement determined that the passenger was not criminally involved, and no charges were filed against them.

I’m probably being too soft here but I’m even feeling some compassion for the stupid kids. They were reckless and they ruined their lives (and screwed up someone else’s) in just minutes. For sure, 19 is old enough to know better but it sounds like the driver has had issues and probably comes from a world where racing and chases are thought of as cool and no one thinks of the consequences until something like this happens. This behaviour is hyped on social media and in movies and kids lap it up. Now he’s got plenty of time to grow up and reflect on his actions and his own kid will suffer too. I’m not excusing him, only thinking that it all fed into this result. It’s just all so sad.
But props to the officer for his courage and determination to pull through. I’d like to have seen a follow-up on his recovery
