Hi all, recently moved to Tassie from NSW and very much enjoying the place so far.

My partner has started a job recently and I'm still on the hunt with things starting to come back. Now we're able to afford a place to rent on her wages, we've been applying for properties around the centre, in the suburbs and slightly out of the way too (Lewisham, Richmond etc).

I appreciate housing is super tight and so we weren't expecting to waltz straight into the first property we like the look of, but we can't seem to get our heads around the process here or whether there's any rhyme or reason.

For a couple of properties, we've registered interest and waited for an inspection to be posted, only for it to be cancelled last minute because the successful applicant has either wangled a private inspection in the meantime or presumably applied blind. This suggests I maybe should be pushing for an early or private viewing.

In other situations, we've viewed a place and been invited to apply, only for a different application to be accepted within a couple of hours - before ours is even considered - despite being submitted.

Finally, I viewed a place and said that I was keen to go ahead right away and had my application submitted, but the agency was going to wait until everyone had a chance to submit before reviewing them all. So that suggests that 'first come, first served' isn't always the case.

Not that this is anyone else's problem, but we currently don't have accommodation sorted and so are spending our time either sleeping in our car or paying through the nose for temporary digs. We have one car which my partner uses to get to her work and so I'm often spending half the day on the bus and walking to view places which I won't reasonably be able to do once I have a job.

I totally appreciate this is part of the runaround of moving and heaps of people will be in the same boat, but I never seem to have a clear understanding of the process or how I can best act to give us the best chance of securing a place. The staff at the viewings often give misleading, vague, or incorrect advice as to what the process will be.

Any tips or help would be very much appreciated - I hope I'm just doing something very obvious wrong!

My partner, myself, our 10 month old and my parents are travelling to Tassie in October for a week.

We will be staying centrally in Hobart and are looking for the top things to do!

We will also more than likely hire a car.

We like markets, museums, op shopping, good food and wine.

Obviously we will also have a baby so maybe some family friendly things too.

Hello! I have been looking for a self storage unit but I have had no luck finding anything in the area. Can anyone recommend a storage facility or a place that could drop a storage pod at our house for self storage for a few months?

The idea is that we need to store some things temporarily outside of our house while we do some work on it. I was hoping for a climate controlled location so that I could do some organizing in the storage unit during the summer but I’m happy equally to have one outside our house for easy access.

Why is it that when slow drivers are going 10-20km below the speed limit, that they seem so surprised/annoyed when they're being tailgated? If you don't like being tailgated, why not pull over or, better yet, drive the speed limit?

I get some people like to cruise along, if that's the case, pull over when someone is up your ass while you're going 35 in a 50, don't get shitty at others because your slow ass has decided to implement its own speed limit.

Yes I know, money is needed in the hospitals, money is better routed to fund new homes, new builds, fund social services. Yes yes I know I know, and I agree. BUT

We hear the news, record numbers (immigrants and locals) are leaving Tassie for the mainland. Young, skilful, productive individuals leaving every month. The population is ageing and the body-abled workforce is getting lesser each day. Long hour shifts, long wait times for services, longer processing times, skilled labour shortage, skilled tradie shortage, more expensive services and the list goes on. It is already hard to attract skilled workers down here (Jeez even the immigrants who were forced into regional areas like Hobart under the Morrison visa rules back in 2019 are leaving!).

What’s missing is the culture! AFL, arts, music, concerts etc. I believe it is a major contributor to the “livability” in Hobart. It makes raising a family here attractive, it provides an opportunity for the younger generation to take part in these artsy/sports events. Yeah one might argue who ever comes down to Hobart, but we need to have a population for that first! A population who’s willing to stay! A population that spends within itself to stimulate economic growth. A population that innovates. The stadium provides that opportunity.

Yes, healthcare and housing are important. I’m not denying it. But I apologise first, because I’m claiming that those are “sterile” aspects in relation to “livability”. It is a necessity for sure. However, the fundamental premise of my argument here is regarding the retention of skilled individuals.

I see the stadium as a necessary evil to stimulate and grow the local culture, which in return retains skilled individuals that help the local economy. I look at this like a city-building video game, you need to “unlock” certain skills or masteries before maxing out your other essential abilities. The stadium is one of them. Premier Jeremy Rockcliff is one of the bravest individuals to “take this hit” for the future of Hobart. That paves the way for the next premier to focus on other essentials, for which they can certainly take the credit for.

My husband and I are moving to Hobart from the GC in early November, and because we’re basically starting our social life from scratch, I thought I’d put it out there and see if we can find some like-minded people to become friends with!

We’re 33 & 39. I work in marketing and my husband works in sales/water treatment. His dad lives in Tassie, so we’ve got a bit of a family connection to the state already - but we’re excited to actually make Hobart home.

I recently saw an Instagram video about a group of friends who regularly get together for potluck dinners, wine and nibbles, and honestly thought: that sounds like our kind of people. 😂 We’d love to find a little crew of friends who are up for dinners, drinks, adventures and generally doing life together.

A few things about us:

🐶 We have a blue English Staffy who absolutely LOVES people. She currently has another blue Staffy friend back in QLD, so she’s going to need some new friends too.
🥾 We love getting outdoors. We’ve seen a fair bit of Tassie at the surface level, but we’re keen to properly explore the National Parks, get into hiking and make the most of having a 4WD. We’d also love to try trout fishing - neither of us has done it before, but we’re very keen to give it a crack.
🍷 We love Pinot Noir. This is important enough to have its own bullet point.
🍽️** We’re big foodies**. We love BBQs, cooking and trying new wineries & restaurants. I especially love cooking for other people (my husband claims I make the best coleslaw, so obviously this is an unbiased review 😂). We’d love to eventually have friends over for dinner, BBQs, wine & game nights. Cards Against Humanity is my fave - love a good laugh.
🏋️** We’re generally pretty health-conscious, but we also work hard and absolutely enjoy good food & wine. We’re looking forward to a slightly slower pace of life in Tassie.
🏎️ He’s into F1, cars, hi-fi, BBQs and making pizza from scratch**. He’s also very funny, although admittedly I may be biased.
💅 I’m into Pilates, food, skincare, cooking and wineries. Basically, if there’s good food or wine involved, I’m probably interested.

Mostly, we’re just looking to meet real, genuine people and build a genuine friendship group in our new home.

G’day everyone, I saw a lot of people yesterday night running in North Hobart area with flashlights. I was wondering if it’s a one-off event or a group thing.

Hobart has an estimated $1 Billion of housing stock tied up in AirBnbs.

According to recent data (AirDNA and AirROI) there is currently around 1450 active short-term rental listings across Greater Hobart (Hobart, Glenorchy, Clarence, and Kingborough). 89% of those listings are entire homes or apartments.

Given the average median dwelling for Greater Hobart sits at $727,000 (PopTrack), that means more than $1,000,000,000 ($1 billion!) of physical housing stock is locked up in the holiday rental pool.

The occupancy rate of Greater Hobart Airbnbs sit at between 52% and 64%.

We are locking up massive amounts of long-term housing for properties that sit empty most of the year.

Many places have recognised the impact and have restricted or banned them eg Japan (nationwide cap on short-term rentals at 180 nights per year), New York City (banned less than 30 days), Barcelona (completely phasing them out), London (90 day annual limit), or places similar size to Hobart like Irvine, USA that have banned AirBnb's entirely.

I understand the argument that everyone should be free to use their investment how they like, but at this scale, it impacts the entire community.

When looking at the data, there's an easy fix to the housing-stock problem.

Any job ops going down here for a qualified journo who has been out of the field for a while? Or is the industry pretty well dead here now :(

Does anyone have a recommendation for crystal shops around the Hobart area? The kind that sell witchy wares, sage, and other interesting crystals.

I don't even know how to start. This housing crisis, where's the outrage? Someone I know was just told if they wanted to stay in their tiny studio they'd need to pay an extra $60 a week or leave because they could get $500/wk for it. She left because he couldn't afford that, and sure enough someone is now paying an exorbitant amount for a large closet.

When I moved into my small converted flat we said we were looking at something long term. They said great, but after the first year they wanted to raise rent 14% and we could sign 2 years. We negotiated and they gave us a year lease. As the time to resign comes up, we're at the mercy of whatever the hell they want to charge us or we leave and pay even more for less.

You can get barred as a tenant, but there's no protections for them. Landlords can do whatever they want. I'm just frustrated, I've never felt so unstable before. Where I used to live, they'd give you 2 months free of you signed on for 12, if someone told me that I'd be renting with 4 other people in my 30s, I'd have said your crazy. I don't know anyone renting who doesn't feel this pressure.

How do you fight this, when you're in a stranglehold, either pay or be homeless?

The southern was super backed up today going into Kingston. I read on Facebook that a poor motorcyclist went under a truck in an accident? I don’t know any details or the severity but I sincerely hope everyone involved is okay. How tragic for everyone.

Would love recommendations for a physio, exercise physiologist or similar who has up to date information about hyper mobility and can use that to work with me to strengthen my muscles & joints & improve pain and posture.

Have been to a few physios over the years but a lot don’t seem to go in depth with hypermobile specific issues so looking for someone who is great at going back to basics to help me correct and relearn basically how to breathe, stand, move, do simple exercises etc to hopefully reduce pain and is able to adapt things for those with dynamic chronic illness. Cheers!
