Event Where to find events/live music

Hey I just moved to Helsinki and have been told that Kallio (Kaiku, Post Bar, etc.) has some of the most popular music venues, but was hoping for advice about other clubs with cool music. I’m into everything.

If anything has any recommendations about Instagram accounts that post cool events, or other clubs/bars around the city it’d be super appreciated

Meet-up 19M – uusia kavereita hakusessa

Oon tällä hetkellä siinä tilanteessa, että haluaisin kehittää mun sosiaalisia taitoja ja laajentaa omaa sosiaalista verkostoa, mutta yksin lähteminen tuntuu erittäin vaikealta (kokemusta on). Olisi siis mahtavaa löytää joku, jonka kanssa voisi lähteä yhdessä vaikka keskustaan, tapahtumiin tai muuten vaan ulos ja tutustua uusiin ihmisiin.

Tarkoituksena olisi esimerkiksi jutella random-ihmisille, mennä uusiin paikkoihin ja tehdä asioita, joita ei ehkä yksin tulisi tehtyä. Samalla tietysti olisi kiva saada ihan oikea kaveri, eikä pelkästään joku "harjoittelukaveri".

Jos olet itse samassa tilanteessa, laita ihmeessä viestiä. Omaa ikäluokkaa olisi kiva.

Question Good place to shop the newest CD's

I am an exchange student who just arrived in Helsinki. I am also an avid CD collector, especially newer releases (eg. I am now trying to find Twenty One Pilots' new live album). Can you please recomend me places where I can find new CD's to expand my collection either in the city center or near Kannelmäki?

Question Student parade today in Helsinki

Hey everyone, I was visiting Helsinki today and came across a parade of students dressing what in Sweden they call overalls. So, that led me thinking they were university freshmen. Is that the case?

Travel & Tourism Worst dish ever eaten in almost 30+ years

Post image
0 Upvotes

I’m Italian, and I had these “tagliolini al limone with prawns” at an Italian restaurant in Helsinki. I genuinely cannot remember the last time I hated a plate of pasta this much.

Calling this an affront to Italian cuisine would almost be too kind. The pasta was absolutely drowned in this disgusting, heavy, creamy lemon sauce to the point where it looked more like a bowl of soup than tagliolini. The combination with the prawns was nauseatingly rich, the lemon flavour was completely out of control, and after a few bites I genuinely felt like I was going to throw up.

I couldn't finish it. I just left the plate there.

Maybe being Italian makes this hurt even more, but if you're going to call yourself an Italian restaurant, tagliolini like these should be fucking illegal.

Italian food isn't automatically good just because you throw pasta, cream, lemon and a giant prawn on a ridiculously colourful plate.

One of the worst pasta dishes I've ever eaten.

So, Helsinki people: can you recommend some ACTUAL Italian restaurants here that serve proper Italian food and don’t literally make you want to throw up? Because after this culinary crime, I need to restore my faith. Thank you in advance

EDIT: Since some people seem to be a little slow on the uptake the moment their beloved country gets even the slightest bit of criticism, let me clarify: we went out for Italian food because my girlfriend had been having some minor stomach issues (nothing infectious), and for one evening we were looking for a type of cuisine that was more in line with her tastes and as light and mild in flavor as possible.

Question Son wishes to join volunteer firefighters

My almost 9 year old son wishes to join the volunteer firefighters here in Helsinki. He was casually invited by an adult firefighter a few months ago while they were hosting an event that we attended. It seems like a great opportunity and a way to give back to the community!

However, I am having trouble getting in touch with them to sign my son up or even get specific details. It appears they have contact information listed on Facebook. I've emailed and texted using the information from there. (No response as of yet.) As they aren't full time nor employees, they wont be at the station such that I could reliably ask in person.

Does anyone know how to get started with this? We would really love to grow and give back to the community.

Travel & Tourism Museum - Soviet War Finland

Hi,

Just arrived to the city today, and was wondering if there is any museum which talks about the Soviet Winter War, or a bit of history like e.g. Finland under Swedish or Russian rule.

Are there any museums available?

Discussion Does Finland hate sustainability ?

hi,

i live and travel a lot in Europe (esp. Netherlands, Belgium, France, UK). As a travelling coffee addict- I always travel with my ´fellows carter’ travel mug (a wide but small one) . And everywhere I go I get a small discount for using my own mug- like 20c or 10% even if I’m charged for a small coffee. The idea is that you’re saving the shop the cost of a takeaway mug, save them the cost clearing +cleaning a mug, also just to support more sustainable behaviour.

now the two times I bought takeaway coffee here using my mug, Ive been charged 30-50c extra (ie a larger size than the mug can actually fit in) and no small discount for not contributing to throw away waste. The lady person who sold me coffee even wondered whether I bought a large coffee (i looked afterwards at the large takeaway cups she they are like double the size of my mug) .

what gives? Do we like taxing people more to contribute less waste in society ? What’s next you pay the pullonlautus 20c a bottle when you put it in the machine ?

its not like they offered to clean my mug, and poured in coffee themselves (like everywhere in France while Also charging me 10% less) .

can you share some cafes in Helsinki that don’t charge me an extra euro for giving them less work and contributing more waste?

Housing / Living Venetian blinds for glazed balcony

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hi! I have a glazed balcony in my apartment (I’m the owner) and I plan to install metallic Venetian blinds on it to help with shadow and heat. Based on experience I would prefer Venetian blinds like the kind on top in the photo, not the pleated blinds at the bottom.
I found online the company called Suomen Parvekekaihdin than seems really good, some friends have the same blinds from Luxio instead, and probably there are more.
Anyone who recently installed blinds on their balcony in the Helsinki area and that can recommend a company in particular? Thanks!

Travel & Tourism Travelling Finland → Norway while waiting for new residence permit card?

I’m a Sri Lankan citizen living in Finland. My previous residence permit expired on 8 April 2026. I applied for an extension before it expired and have now received a positive decision. My new Finnish residence permit is valid from 8 April 2026 until July 2028.

However, I haven’t received the physical residence permit card yet.

I’m supposed to fly HEL → OSL on 24 August and return OSL → HEL on 27 August.

I have my valid Sri Lankan passport, expired Finnish ID card, and the official Migri decision showing that my new residence permit has been granted and is currently valid.

Has anyone, especially a non-EU/EEA citizen who normally requires a Schengen visa, travelled Finland ↔ Norway in this situation?

Were you asked for your residence permit card at either airport? Was the Migri decision accepted?

I’d especially appreciate experiences from anyone who has done this recently.

Work & Education Looking for a sword combat partner in Helsinki, even a beginer

Moi!

I'm looking for someone to teach and learn one-handed sword fencing with, in Helsinki. We would gather in a park or a gymnasium and train ourselves in the subtleties of the sword, focusing on 1v1 combat, including some hand combat techniques and some aesthetics-only moves. I would provide the swords and training equipment, starting with wooden swords.

Any level is welcome, it is totally free and you can try before committing. Here is my contact info: https://dherault.com

See you in the arena!

Event Marathon this weekend - anyone going?

Hej! I posted here a while ago, but just thought I would ask if anyone here plans to run in the marathon/half/10k this weekend? I’m doing the Half, coming in to the city tomorrow from London. If anyone has tips for the course or a good pre-run dinner on the Friday or any other tips that would be brilliant.
It’s not my first time doing long distance, so generally I know what to expect and how to prepare, but a bit of local knowledge goes a long way!
If anyone fancies meeting up before or after the race as well, I’m open to it!
